Dolphins still vying for Jake Long even as he visits St. Louis

Jake Long, who has a gift for his economy of words when speaking with the media, also has a very vivacious and outgoing wife named Jackie.

That's right. Jake and Jackie Long.

Anyway, while Jake guards his privacy about as jealously as he does his quarterback's blind side, Jackie is more open. Jake has declined to speak with local media throughout his free agency period, selecting only national outlets to get out his message. Jackie, meanwhile, has a twitter account.

And that twitter account has been informative as to what's going on and how torn the couple is as they decide their future -- either with the Miami Dolphins or St. Louis Rams.

"Great dinner last night. Hoping to get everything figured out soon. No matter what happens we feel so fortunate." Jackie Long tweeted this morning from St. Louis where she and her husband awoke to a second day of a free agency visit.

Long spent nearly seven hours getting his physical from the Rams on Wednesday. Yes, perhaps the longest physical in the history of NFL free agency was probably a thorough investigation of the big man's multiple  former injuries -- biceps, triceps, knees, back, shoulders -- as the Rams decide how much they're willing to invest in Long.

As that physical was happening yesterday, Jackie Long had to correct an erroneous report in the South Florida Sun Sentinel that Long has agreed to terms with the Rams.

"Alright hold up everyone," Jackie Long tweeted minutes after the report went on the newspaper's website. "Nothing is official yet."

The report was vehemently denied through sources by the Rams who said not only was there no agreement, there were no terms that had even been discussed. The report was eventually taken down.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, remain hopeful they can get Long back. They have discussed contract details with Long's representation multiple times. They see Long taking trips as a way to set the market for his worth.

Long returning remains so important, the club was worried a tweet from Bryant McKinnie announcing he was on a plane to South Florida would be interpreted as him visiting the Dolphins and that would upset Long.

So the club made clear that no visit from McKinnie was scheduled so Long might not get upset and move on.

I don't read tea leaves. So I have no idea which way Long is going to go on this one. I know if the Rams had blown the Longs away on a contract, they were prepared to go that direction.

That obviously has not happened, at least not yet. And so the Dolphins are still vying to keep their left tackle. Their offer, which obviously wasn't what Long believed he was worth, is holding up so far.

[Update: NFL Network is reporting the Rams are negotiating a contract with Long.]

I'm told the Dolphins have a "Plan B" if Long bolts. They obviously will not implement that until Long makes a decision.

WNP, agreed, I said that basically on the premise that they sign Long/Keller

Mark,

Oh they'll sign Long. And Smith too. Don't worry about that.

Damn you Ireland!!!

Completely disagree Craig. I don't believe Long cost us Cook. I think Ireland was actually smart on this one. 7 million a year for potential is ridiculous. Had it beeen for production I could see it but the guy has averaged under 30 yds per game and 2tds per season and thats not good. Certainly doesn't match his new salary. We payed Wallace for production and the Rams payed Cook based on hope he will improve with them.

OMG.....and for those of you still bashing Ireland. The guy could bring a SB to Miami and you'll still complain that they didn't go undefeated. Don't judge him on what happened during the Tuna Age. He has made some really good picks without Parcells, and some that maybe haven't turned out great. But overall, he's done well in the last two drafts without Parcells looking over his shoulder. Tanny, Martin, Vernon, Egnew, Miller, Kaddu, Randall, Matthews, Pouncey, Thomas, Clay, and Wilson are still on the team. That's with only two 1s, two 2's, and two 3rd round picks total. I've watched every play of every game for the last several years. Vernon, Miller, Kaddu, Randall, and Matthews are pretty good already and are expected to get even better. Sure, the jury is still out on Thomas, Egnew, Clay, and Wilson....but this year will be the determining factor for them. Tanny and Pouncey? Well, if I have to explain their value.....you aren't a real fan of the team.

bobby @10:09am,

We'll agree to disagree. There were two TEs I wanted in FA this year, Cook and Bennett. Ireland failed to land either. It's been his story for 5 years in Miami. I didn't here the story you heard about Cook going to St. Louis and being 'comfortable woith Fisher'. I heard at the last minute the Dolphins balked at his price. Bennett was already gone by then.

I'm saying all this slow-dancing with Long, is and was a mistake. The offers there, get other things done in the meantime. They played it wrong in my opinion and the drop off to Keller is large, IMO.

To me until I see progress on the field they're still a 6-10-7-9 football team, pete 5.th in the afc really pete really wow !! Typical delusional homer dolphins fan !! Draft 2.Wr's Cb De Te also trade to get picks for next then we'll see !!

Phins78,

I'm tired of average, middle of the road, do-noting TE's on this team. If you want something different then you have to pay for it. Should Jermichael Finley be making $8.5 mil a year for what he does? Probably not. If you want a DIFFERENCE-MAKER at TE, you have to pay for one. We haven't and we continue to run these average 'don't scare anyone' TE's out there. I would have paid the money. Who cares!

LOL,

Like I said--you can't be YG b/c you have an actual brain.

Posted by: We Need Playmakers | March 14, 2013 at 10:21 AM

LOL Thanks! I take that as a compliment! I also compliment you for having a brain that is able to recognize it.

Let's hope Ireland gets off his a** and moves on.

Long has taken the longest phycial in the history of the world! That's enough to know you should PASS!

Sign sean smith

The Rams passed us by after they landed Fisher.

Craig, as far as Keller v Fasano goes, i know people will want to look at their career stats and compare. However, I think Keller was an ascending player and Fasano, we've seen thes best of. Last time they both played a full year, keller had over 800 yards receiving while Fasano had 451.

And career #s, depsite Fasano playing 108 games v keller's 72, Keller has 2,876 yards v Fasano's 2,373. How is that similar???

One other thing Phins78. Cook's had a broken down Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker throwing to him the last two years. The man receiving option there has been who? Kenny Britt? Oft-injured, oft-in trouble off the field. There's nobody of value on that offence.

Cook is 26 years old and a dynamic guy. I believe if this guy stays healthy he'll take-off. Let's see.

Craig M,

I agree, whilst I'd rather have Amendola for the Dolphins, the patriots window is closing and keeping Welker was obvious - unless they plaan to use Amendola in a different way (he has better hands and is better outside) and plan also to add a WR in the draft. They've wanted to use the two TE sets but their TEs are rarely healthy at the same time either.

WNP @ 10:23, that wouldn't upset me at all.

Is Jackie Long Prettier Than Sam Bradford's Wife?(The Real Question)

Jake Long Is A Huge P"ssy!!

Will Still Have Jake Back In An Instant!!

Allegedly The Rams Are Offering $9 Mil A Year. Don't Know The Length Of The Deal.
Now Did Ireland, Bill Belicheked Him?

Doubt It, Because Jake Probably Has His Agent Talking To Ireland To Go Up Just A Little. So She Could Comeback.

Mckinnie Sounds Like A Good Fallback Option. It Also Means The Team Still Sees Martin As a RT.

Either/Or Ireland Is Hopefully Answering The LT Question Thru Free Agency!! So The Fins Can Draft E.Lacy With The #12 Overall Pick.

Another point of why we need Jake Long. Just look at the Colts. What did they do in free agency? They signed two offensive lineman, they are protecting their investment...the QB. We need to do the same thing or Tannenhill is going to get killed. We need an OT and a OG in the draft, especially if we lose Long. We have spent a lot of money on the Oline and they are just average. We also need a TE that can block and be a seam threat. Jared Cook was not that answer, he can't block his way out of a paper bag, so I will have to agree with Ireland on letting him go, he was not worth that contract he signs with the Rams. Time will tell.

'We'll agree to disagree. There were two TEs I wanted in FA this year, Cook and Bennett. Ireland failed to land either. It's been his story for 5 years in Miami. Craig,

I wanted Bennett all along. Cook has been an underachiever & he got paid like an elite TE so the Rams can have him.

As for Keller--if we don't sign him then what??? I think it would be a good signing b/c it's another weapon for Tannehill.

Ireland is not sitting with his tail between his legs, the team is actually following a plan and not simply winging it as some of you are starting to suggest.

Guys I haven't checked yet but has the run on tackles and corners started yet? If not watch for that, it's when Ireland will get involved again so don't worry. If it has started your worries aare correct except your forgetting we have a draft coming.

It's funny to me that some of the posters who were cautioning everyone on building through free agency are now acting as if not filling all of the team needs in FA will be a bad thing. Stay on one side of the fence sheesh.

Keller should get a 3 year 8 Million deal with $4.5 mil guaranteed. He had injuries last year & is 29. I'm willing to bet he'll take that offer.

He'll come in at less than half of what cook or bennet did. Has good speed, gets open.

However, if we lose on him & potnetial starting CB's because Ireland is holding guaranteed money in reserve for Long, the Ireland era should end and quickly!

Mark,

He's not the difference maker I wanted at the TE position. You'd rank him where in the list of top ten TEs in the league? And to add to that, he's been banged up the last couple of years. Id this REALLY a 'difference maker', a guy we can count on? I'm not seeing it. It's not the guy I wanted.

The one thing I'll say is Ireland's view on overpaying is a little suspect. He'll overpay for Wheeler but not Cook??

No one cost us Cook except the Rams. They offered more money, get over it.

Long is obviously going to make a decision today and with Smith ruling out the Eagles it looks like he's close as well.

The youth on this roster is really what's settling about it. Only a small handful of 30+ aged players and that's something you have to give Ireland credit for. You might not like all of them but there aren't any busts left wasting away on the roster, just potential.

I wouldn't even judge Ireland on the last year Tuna was here as a consultant. In terms of full talent evaluation and complete control without a HOFer looking over your back then Ireland is really going into his third draft this year.

Credit Philbin for his influence as well, seems like a real leader of men.

Long didn't cost us Cook or anyone else or that matter. Cook got paid a lot and hasn't done that much, so thats a gamble. The team is already gambling with Wallace and to a degree the ILB. Though both moves I like.

Keller would be a great addition. So everyone bashes Fasano, but now that he is gone it leaves a giant hole? Give me a break. Fasano was solid, but he went ot KC to be a backup...

Also yeah there are still some holes on the team, but there are also still 5 top 100 draft picks. Draft OT 1st, CB, CB, and TE, WR and you have a full team.

They may even retain Smith/Long at the price THEY wanted. Which would be fine, at least the GM doesn't overpay players that don't produce. Dolphins are in good shape, imo.

WNPs @10:33am,

I believe he's about the only option left for us, I'm afraid. Unless you believe in Meyers in Oakland or want to take a flyer on Fred Davis (who I like). We're kind of stuck, I'm afraid. And that's my problem with the whole thing. With a team having the money we had, we went conservative again and lost out on the top guys. Maybe it'll be Eiffert in the draft or Ertz but again, now we're into 'maybes'. Would have been nice to have been aggressive and gotten it done.

WNP @ 10:23, that wouldn't upset me at all.

Mark,

I'm going to hold you to that this season.

IMO--If we bring Long & Smith there will still be MAJOR issues on offense & defense.

OK Advise for our buddy Jake Long. You feel better than ever?? You are in the best shape of your life? OK then prove it!! Take a risk sign a 1 year deal that gives you the opportunity to show me you can line up and not get injured. Then after you give me a pro bowl year you can then demand the big contract!! VERY simple!! Right? The fact that he wants a multi year deal with guaranteed money means he wants the team he signs with to take his word and the risk onto their shoulders with a large guarantee. Im not buying!!! I offer him a 1 yr 6m max with injury clauses.... This is why Jake has not signed yet.. I dont believe the Fins or the Rams offer him more than a 1 to 2 yr deal with a big discount until he can play a a clean year. If either one does more than that? its a blind foolish risk and I think it will bite them because jake will have no motivation to get back into shape if he signs a 50 million dollar deal

CommonSense,

There was a GIANT hole there when Fasano was there. Who's saying because Fasano left there is a giant hole?

The problem with Fasano's career numbers are that during the Henne years, how often was he held out of pass routes because of "max protection" being called. I think his numbers could of been better had he not been called to pass block on every single obvious passing down.

Craig, Lol. Because Ireland didn't get one of the two tight ends YOU coveted that means he failed? They had a price set on Cook and Bennett had no interest in us. There are other tight ends, don't worry, we will get someone to replace Fasanos measly numbers. Still have a draft and a possible great fit in Keller who will be an upgrade.

Ireland Is Signing Value Free Agents.

Even Day 1. Wallace Is The Only One People Can Say He Overspent. And If He Plays To His Potential And The Worth To This Offense.

If Ireland Signs Most Of The Needs Thru Free Agency. Which Looks Like That Is What He Is Doing. The Draft Will Be Cake.

Dolfan Rick,

Great point @10:35am. That's it EXACTLY! Most people wouldn't even know who Wheeler is but that move is OK? Huh?

I think Ireland missed the point on this. Time will tell.

"I believe he's about the only option left for us, I'm afraid. Unless you believe in Meyers in Oakland or want to take a flyer on Fred Davis (who I like). We're kind of stuck, I'm afraid. Craig,

Unfortunately this is the Jeff Ireland we've come to expect--indecisiveness & ineptitude. I expect the starting TE position to remain unfilled.

Craig M,

I don't think Ireland has given up on Clay or Egnew. I know Egnew looked bad last year (at least in practice) but I'm uncomfortable writing someone off after just their rookie year.

Every team has weaknesses, if the dolphins biggest weakness is TE then I'll be happy with that. the O line and CB are a bigger concern to me.

CommonSense,

Posted by: Craig M | March 14, 2013 at 10:40 AM

Some post earlier, I ain't going back to look at it. That Myer (?, TE Oak) might be a sleeper pickup btw. He would be cheap too.

Keller would be awesome, you made a good point about what Cook had to work with. Put that same criteria to Keller.

Craig M....

how is it that in an Off season when yout boy (Ireland) is actually making moves....and BIG moves @ that....you jump ship...

I don't get it man...wait 5 years and 40 mil in CAP space to decide NOW is the time to citisize him....

Qb- T-Hill
RB- L.Miller and E.Lacy
FB-D.Thomas
TE-Keller,Egnew,Clay
LT- Jake, B.McKinney
LG-Incognito
C- Pouncey
RG- Jerry, 3rd Rd Pick
RT-Martin

Craig we will never agree on Cook but that's fine. I would think a broken down qb could use a good outlet at TE for protection. That point you made now makes me happier we didn't sign him. His qb needed help and he got 20 something yards a game and only 2 tds, yikes! I guess you could blame it on hassle or both, it just sends up another red flag for me.

WNP= Voice of reason.

The one thing I'll say is Ireland's view on overpaying is a little suspect. He'll overpay for Wheeler but not Cook??

If anything he overpaid for Ellerbe. $7 Million a year for a guy who has started 14 games in 4 years??? Not saying he's not a good player but that's crazy.

I've seen Wheeler play on a number of occasions & I believe he will be the better & more impactful signing.

Love how Bobby D put it...

Long is holding up the process and is being a bg baby....

I understand...get ALL the money you can....I would never begrudge abother man's wallett....

but c'mon man...sh@t or get off the pot....

Phins78, we all know CB's are waiting for Revis to be traded & resign. But, some have signed. Good ones too. Houston, Cox, Cromartie, Tolver. Good ones for MORE THAN REASONABLE prices.

Why would Ireland be waiting to address the biggest need until Revis signs? So they will cost more?

OT have been signed. About 6 of them! How many good tackles do you think there are in FA?

Not many & Long is still available. The fact that no one else has signed him is proof he isn't worth signing. Yet, Ireland IS waiting on Long to to get an offer & decide before he brings in a tackle.

Its been proven by him denying a report that Mckinney came for a visit! Why would he deny that? Why does he need to let Jake know no one came?

It's blatantly obvious he's in a holding pattern. Meanwhile, talent better than what he is losing, starts to to evaporate.

Denying reports? Is he tryin to be a friend to someone or run a team? If no one else wants them, why should we? He had a great Day 1 but, he's reverting back to the same old Ireland who has mismanaged this team from day 1.

Kris,

Because I'm not buying the hype. Just the way I feel.

My 'boy Ireland'? REALLY?

Wheeler showed production. Great in coverage(we desperately need that) and rated second best pass rushing olb in the league (we desp needed that. Cook has no production to backup his salary demands.

WNP, you have a point, but from what they were paying Dansby and Burnett they actually saved money and got younger. I think that is a great move, don't really see how it is overpaying.

Bring in McKinnie at no more than half the price of Long. Put a provision in his contract stating he must maintain a certain weight. McKinnie was dominant once he got in shape. Long is no longer an elite LT. There is no way any team should pay $10 million a year from him. He is not Orlando Pace. He has been a bust as a number 1 overall pick. Cut your losses. You can sign both McKinnie and Winston for less than what you would pay for Long.

I have doubted Ireland in the past but he has done a good job so far this offseason. Go Fins.

'how is it that in an Off season when yout boy (Ireland) is actually making moves....and BIG moves @ that....you jump ship...

I don't get it man...wait 5 years and 40 mil in CAP space to decide NOW is the time to citisize him....'

LMFAO@Kris. Best post in months!!!! Ha!!!!

He argued with me for MONTHS about keeping Long & then the other day he just TOTALLY reversed course on that too. I don't get it...

Kris,

Because Ireland Cut Dansby. His Feelings Still Hurt.

Even You Are Starting To Believe In Ireland. And You Have Been One Of His Toughest Critics.

Ireland Still Has A lot Of Moves To Make In Free Agency. 1 LT, 1 TE, 1-2 CB.

If Ireland Signs These Needs Before The Draft, This Team Will Be In Great Position To Do Whatever It Feels. Trade Up, Trade Down, Use All 5 Picks In The Top 90.

'WNP= Voice of reason.'

LOL@JJ. More like voice of frustration...

Kris,

I'm not sold on Ellerbe and I don't watch enough Raiders games to have an opinion. I think Ireland had a golden opportunity this offseason and I think he's blowing it. They're not the moves I wanted to see.

If I'm wrong, great....it means we're on the way. But my gut feeling....he's just sealed his death knell.

Could that change with what's left with FA and the draft? Of course. But I think he's misplayed his hand.....outsmarted himself. Hope he proves me wrong.

I'm still trying to figure what the people on this blog are thinking!

The Dolphins were the second youngest team last year. They cut two 30 year old guys for younger better players, and signed 26 year old Wallace.

Ireland is only interested in younger players with upside for this team. THAT IS HOW IT SHOULD BE!!!

All I hear is now look at CB in FA! That is what the draft is for. Forget these stop gab players!!

You don't fix every problem with FA!!!

All I hear is the same dumb talk!!

One other thing Kris,

I'm not jumping ship. THIS is my team. Has nothing to do with Ireland. I guess I should ask how come so many are jumping on board?

I've been critical before. Lack of a quality TE in all the time he's been here is inexcusable. In hindsight, I hated the Marshall trade. In hinsight, he made the wrong move trading up for Thomas. Many mistakes along the way.

I can't get over Pete saying Long would be going to an easier division if he joined the Rams. 49ers and Seahawks are in there bud, if anything he'd have an easier time staying with us.

Fasano caught 5 TDs from a rookie QB last year. He wasn't this 'seam threat' but he played his part.

Myers had a decent year last year and is younger than Keller. Their two best seasons match up. However, Myers isn't an elite TE, just a good stop gap until we fix the position (like Fasano but cheaper). I'd be happy with Myers if we could focus on other area's of need this year.

jackie sounds like a by.tch, she'll grab him by his ballz and make him go back.
lol

Lol Craig I have to agree with Kris here. You just spent about a year sticking up for Ireland over very little and now when he actually starts shaping the team and spending some money you're all over him.

Lets see, fans and media bash Ireland you stand in his corner holding a shield. Then Ireland shows some guts and adds playmakers and you're all over him. Too funny,

ATTN: Ireland has suspended ALL Miami Dolphins business on until Bus Cook (Jake Long's agent) calls him back. Oh Jeffy...What have you done??? You had a chance to right the ship. Why????

fake boobs fake lips fake axx = so be
not st louis.
lol

Ok, we need to argue FACTS. Dustin Keller played every single game his first four years. Last year was the first year he had any injuries. FACT. Wheeler and Ellerbe were signed with cap money which came from Dansby and Burnett being released. The fact we didn't sign Cook has nothing to do with signing two LBers. FACT: it is day 3 of FA, season don't start next week. We sign Keller our TE position is set. Like Phins78 said, till Revis moves, CB market is flat. Still a ton of CBs out there to sign.

Who is criticizing Wheeler's contract? Seriously, do ANY of you know anything? AT ALL?

My word, overpaying Wheeler? LMAO

Wheeler is getting less guaranteed money than cook by a few million!

Burnett #4 4-3 OLB by Profootballfocus
Wheeler #6

Wheeler is younger
Wheeler is cheaper
Wheelers contract is much more manageable than Burnetts in later years

Ireland didn't over pay anything for Wheeler or Ellerbe! Both contracts actually saved us MORE cap space to be able to pursue Cook & we still didn't pay him!

But, yea.....we overpaid for Wheeler! LMAO

Darkoak,

re-read my post. I stated that the Dolphins had the easier division, so we agree.

Oops my bad Pete I went back and re-read your post. You had it the right way. My bad......Darkoak skulks off for another cup of coffee which he clearly needs.
