Dolphins interest in DE Michael Bennett makes sense

Agent Drew Rosenhaus has a gift for getting the Miami Dolphins interested in his clients.

Sometimes that's been a problem such as the year he got tight end Eric Green to Miami as the signature free agent signing when the team really needed a defensive end. Sometimes, it's blessing.

Consider this a better moment because the Dolphins are interested in prospective Tampa Bay free agent defensive end Michael Bennett, a Rosenhaus client.

Bennett, one of the top pass rushers on the free agent market, is visiting the Dolphins today, The Herald's Adam Beasley has confirmed.

It makes sense.

Bennett, a five-year veteran, had nine sacks last season and the Dolphins desperately would like to add a classic 4-3 defensive end to put on the other side of the line opposite Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake.

Bennet also makes sense for Miami because of the familiarity. He played at Texas A&M under Mike Sherman, now the Dolphins offensive coordinator. It's not a stretch to believe Sherman knows his former player.

Bennett has 13 sacks in the last two seasons (in 30 games) and 15 sacks in his career. Tampa Bay has said it wants Bennett back but obviously has not done enough to get him.

Funny thing is everyone knows we are one good shot on Brady away from being in the playoffs-no matter how it plays out from here. And we dont even have to be the team that hits him. Crazy.

Losing starters to other teams is never a recipe for success. The best way is to keep your starters and acquire new talent that pushes your starters to backup roles. Thats how you build real strong depth.

..Kris..I understand where you are coming from. I just think that no matter what Irealnd would have done(and remember free agency isn't done by a long shot) No matter what he would have done. People could have, and would have poked holes in his strategy. This if fine. Everyone isn't going to agree that each player is the right one. But to read that we failed, or we blew it again.(and I'm not implying you have) It ticks me off.

Look, I have been very critical of Ireland in the past. I don't know..Nobody knows if these moves are good ones. The team isn't complete yet. Even then they won't get put to the test for another 6 months.

I would like to see what happens in the future before even trying to make a guess as to if we are a better team. So many scenarios, opportunities between now and even training camp to the start of the season to both slam Ireland, or schlep his knob for being the greatest...A long way to go..

hireland, i agree with you. ireland landed the best WR in FA and upgraded the LBs which was already strong at a lower price. just because a player is a FA doesn't mean he is a fit or miami even wants him. miami didn't "miss" on cook and keller,i would no way have given cook 7.5 a year and thought maybe 3 mil for keller

The moron ALoco wants to know what YG is having for dinner?? Why fry boy, you gonna super size the fries or tenderize the sausage??

Hate to inform that Thomas Howard and the og reported to now be in Miami are both coming off of reconstructive knee surgery.

IMO, this equals training camp fodder. Ireland will kick the tires and send them on their merry way.

DOLPHINS AND IRELAND BLOW IT AGAIN!!

Free agency isn't for rebuilding your whole team. Just with upgrading WR and the LB's coupled with signing some of our existing FA's was already good enough. Plenty of time for trades, the draft, ect.

You know I think that we all got carried away with FA (even me). Remember that great teams do not build through FA. Look at the successful teams, Patriots, Niners, and Packers built the core of their group through the draft. The Patriots rarely pay huge money for outside FAs and Belichick knows what players are expendable and trades them to get more picks.

I guess I am fine if we don't pay any more big money in FA. Bring another CB to compete with Marshall and Patterson but spend Marshall type money. Bring back Gardner at Tackle, and sign the TE from Oakland. I would then draft Lane Johnson/Xavier Rhodes in the first round, 2a. CB or RT 2b. Ryan Swope 3a. Gavin Escobar and 3b. BA Running back. That should fill all the holes. We have over reacted.

ALoco,

I had freshly made chicken cordon bleu for dinner. Handmade it myself.

Kevin why bother. ALoco refuses to engage in a normal human interaction with anyone in here.

Right ALoco? Am I lying? That's your thing as far as I see it. You state an opinion that goes completely against the grain and then when challenged you ignore the question and start talking to people about food.

Pretty much sums it up right?

BOBBYD13 ,

TRY TO BE CIVIL...

Plus, any players signed right along in now, arent any guys that are strong pro bowl candidates. Only thing out there right now are has beens and never beens yet.

So what, we still need holes filled on the starting units. That's what the freaking draft is for.

If any here thought that we were going to be a sb calibre football team after this offseason alone. Then youre still snoring away in your concussive sleeps of slumber.

really?
the top 5 free agent cornerbacks are all still available starting with Cason

BREAKING NEWS:

SOME TEAMS LOST A LOT BETTER PLAYERS AND STARTERS THAN THE DOLPHINS LOST THIS FREE AGENCY!

WHILE CRYING A RIVER, CRY ONE FOR THE REST OF THE NFL'S TEAM'S ALSO! LOL...

Let's see where the team is at opening day compared to last year at opening day.

Ireland has been a new GM ever since the burden of Sparano has been lifted.

ALoco I accept you for who you are, I'm just trying to help others out so they don't lose their minds trying to figure you out for years like I did! Ha

hireland, a lot of bad decisions made with ireland had the stench of parcells who is an idiot judging talent

PHINS...'

YOU R RIGHT,THERE'S NO REASON TO TALK FOOTBALL ,WHEN YOU KNOW THE END RESULT .........

I BELIEVE MOST BLOGGERS ARE DUMB ,LIKE BOBBYD13 .I FIND IT MORE FUN TO TALK FOOD OR GARAGE OR ANY THING ELSE ......

The only fish that jumped out the boat was Bush (also the only winner) the rest were catch and release. Long=Egomaniac Smith=Worst corner in the league. Fasano=Slow as sh*t who else? Gimme more. I dont feel anything for these guys anymore. I rooted they failed. I believed they quit. Yeah week 17 They quit f*ck em f*ck em f*ck em!!!!!!!

Phins78, why don't you go back to that other CJ blog with your 5 heShe friends?

Darryl at 9:05, I feel your pain and agree 100%. Love the post.

DASHI
BOBBYD13

........LIFE IS GOOD

Do some of you really believe Ireland does not think, is unaware, and merely a drone programmed by Parcells? That is beyond silly. He has more experience and knowledgeable pro contacts in the business than all of us clueless bloggers combined. Parcells is a guy that gave him a job once, nothing more.

Realllly hoping we sign Keller and then draft the better blocker (they both catch everything) out of Ertz or Eiffert. Kris what say you? What's your TE scenario?

Everyday that Passes Free Agents Lose Money.

Stick To Your Guns Ireland!!

Great Way To Manage The Cap While Still Signing Free Agents.

Expect Something On The CB Front The Next Couple Days. Smith Wasn't Worth it! And You Can Still Find Good Value.

What Is Taking Jackie So Long To Announce If He Is Going To St.Louis? Could he be Talking To Ireland?

I tend to agree a little bit with YG. The guys left out there have some type of baggage or they would not be FAs. They are either over priced, they are over the hill, have injury issues, or are not that good.

I was whining earlier too but we have done pretty well so far and it is not over yet. We signed the top WR in FA and upgraded the LB unit while releasing guys that were going to kill our cap next year. I think that Ireland will still address the OT, CB, and TE with average type FAs but will attempt to fill those same holes with playmakers in the draft. We have 5 of the top 86 picks. We have to relax.

ANOTHER DUMB POSTER;;;;;;;

HIRELAND.........

Why do people want Keller? We already have two TE's that can't block worth a crap.

For sure most of you are far dumber than Ireland.

Aloco you don't know the end result, none of us do. Were you the one in the Yankees blog yelling at me that they would never win the series with ARod? He made ridiculous predictions and typed with the caps lock on too, you may be related.

The Dolphins can only land a player if they waaaay overpay ( evident from day one of free agency). Since then if they try and pay market value they lose out. Ireland sucks! He is trying to play a shell game so he can get a contract extension. Dolphins are still crap until Ireland is gone.

DASHI HAS NO INTEGRITY .........

HE RODE THE (( TRDAE DANSBY BOAT )) ,WHEN WE STARTED THAT A YEAR EARLY ....

Aloco what is your IQ, or do you not have one?

PHINS....

IT'S NOT ME...

I HATE BASEBALL,THE WORST EVER INVENTED SPORT ,,,,EVER..

MAYBE Fasano didnt quit MAYBE. But he still slow. I was down with him as a second. Oh well good riddance.

Losing Bennett isn't a huge deal. No DE's are getting money and there are still guys like Freeney and Osi out there that will be had for cheap. And besides, Dummerville is better than any DE on the market. If he get's cut, I would be all over him if I were Ireland.

Also, something will happen with Finley in GB especially if Jennings does come back. Could be why Miami is playing hardball with Keller

ALOCO,

DEEP FRIED MY CHICKEN CORDON BLEU IN MY OWN SPECIAL HEINEKEN BEER AND HONEY RECIPE BATTER. THATS A SCRET I WILL NOT DIVULGE.

Dashi great point. A lot of good talent still out there, agents are going to start dropping their prices this weekend.

So psyched we still have those 5 picks in the first three! If I were Ireland I would be on the phone with Buffalo to guage their interest in a trade for Moore. He would be a great stop gap there.

Aloco,

Dashi has Posted About 5 Times Allday. And You Are Still Ridding The Great One's Jock!!

Give It A Break!!

On The Ribeye... I Feel You I Can Have That Everyday. Medium Well. Try To Have It On Most Weekends Though. A Little Expensive For 6 Steaks. But It's Worth IT. Cheaper than Going To A Restaurant and Ordering A 12oz Steak.

This blog is a perfect demonstration of how few people can think for themselves. It's nothing but a bunch of charlatans echoing what they read an hour ago online and pretending they have a clue.

Parcells is a guy who gave him a job once?

Parcells is a guy who hired him as a scout and mentored him all the way up to being his right hand man.

Everyone who says Ireland should only be judged on the last two years - fair enough.

But you can't ignore the fact that he's a Parcells protege and his first year alone he went the exact same route (offensive lineman over a quarterback) as Parcells.

He drafted a quarterback the next year? Great, but do you really think he could have kept his job if he didn't reach for a converted WR at #8?

He signed a top flight receiver in free agency? Great, but do you really think he could have kept his job if he didn't overpay a one dimensional receiver to fix the disgraceful WR situation he created?

Ireland's "good" moves have been totally reactive. He's a step behind. Constantly.

Maybe he's learning. Maybe he'll get better as a GM. But it's a steep price to pay.

Also, Clayton, Schefter, all those guys said before FA started that by Friday most teams would be capped out and there would only be a few buyers left. Well, it's almost Friday and it's starting to get quiet out there.

Only barbarians eat good meat medium well. Why not just by a box of slim jims?

ALoco had a McRib Sandwich that he bought home from work.

DASHI,

TO EAT A RIBEYE MEDIUM WELL ,IS LIKE EATING AN IRISH CORN BEEF CRAP.NO Taste at all..

IN THESE DAYS AND TIME, COMMON SENSE, NEED BE RENAMED "UNCOMMON SENSE" IT ISNT NEARLY AS COMMON AS IT USED TO BE.

If Bennett was that good TB would of signed him back.

These guys are FA's for a reason too.

Stay the course Jeff. Having faith is your young current roster and coaching is what makes top teams, not signing every FA option out there.

HIRELAND,

We would like a TE who has sniffed the playing field once or twice in the good ol NFL, so we can draft someone to groom behind him. Too much to ask??

Keller may not be much better than Fasano but Egnew and Clay couldn't even keep Fasono off the field.

They obviously are obviously interested in Keller or they wouldn't have brought him in. Evidently he wanted 5 or 6 million per.

I like Tannehill more than Matt Ryan. Ryan has peaked. Tannehill has far more upside. Ryan is a choker, actions speak louder than words. Shut out at home for a whole half in the biggest game of his life. 1-4 in the playoffs, not impressed.

aloco,

Cut Dansby!!

Dashi Never Wanted Him Traded!!

Dashi Wanted Him Fired!! For The Collapse Of 2011!!

From The Start of 2012!! Yes!! Cut Dansby!!

Dashi Also Wanted M&M Gone!! But He Is Still Here!!

Can't Win Them All!!

=====================================================

Phins78,

Agreed. That Is What The Desperate Fin Fans Don't Understand. Ireland Is Going For Value. And Value Is Still Out There!! Actually The Value Is Going Up!! You Can Get A Better Player For Less!! And Ireland Has The Most Cap!!

Specially At The 2 Positions Of Needs. OT and CB!!

If Ireland Manages To Answer These 2 Holes Thru Free Agency. The Draft Will Be Cake!! The Only Real Needs Then Are More Depth!! Than Starters!! BPA with Every Pick!!

bobbyd14,

what IS A McRIB SANDWICH...????????

SEEMS MANY OF THE POSTERS HERE ARE BORN POT CHERNOBYL ERA. EXPLAINS A LOT!

Matt Ryan has "peaked" as a top flight quarterback in this league. A guy who can obviously carry a team to a championship.

I'd give up Tannehill's "potential" in a second for a quarterback who's good enough.

There have been hundreds of quarterbacks to come through the NFL with Tannehill's "potential" and not make it.

He looked like he COULD become better than Chad Henne his first season. That's not nearly good enough.

No rick. No need to replace them until their contracts are up.

POST

VALUE??????????

Wallace, Ellerbe, Moore, and Wheeler are the opposite of value.

DASHI,

YOU R SO NICE WHEN YOU WRITE WITHOUT THE INSULTS........YOU INVITE PEOPLE TO READ YOUR POSTS..PLEASE ,KEEP THE DIRT OUT OF YOUR WRITING ...

DO YOU AGREE ,THAT OUR GARAGE MANAGER CAN SIGN A LOT OF PLAYERS,TALENTED AND ALL ,STILL WE CAN'T WIN GAMES ....

Dansby was released. Still unsigned. Still far richer than the daShe will ever be, and he is jealous that a fat dumb black man had far more success than him and his medium well tortured meat. LOL

HOW MANY POSTERS HERE WERE BORN POST CHERNOBYL ERA, RAISE YOUR HANDS.

IF YOU TRIED TO RAISE YOUR HANDS THEN YOUR BORN IN THE HOT RADIOACTIVE ZONE.

Hireland allow me to answer. IMO Keller would make an excellent safety valve for Tannehill because he is a very athletic tight end. Yes he's not known as a great blocker but he's also no slouch. Also this isn't 1985 so blocking TEs aren't as important as they once were when the power running game was the norm. He has great hands and gets great seperation high in the seam.

Now imagine we draft Eiffert or Ertz. Now we have a one two punch at TE plus a very potent two TE set. You have Wallace BLOWING THE ROOF off the top of the defense, Keller down the seam, Hartline on intermediate outs and slants, and Bess using his quickness on the underneath slants and outs.

This is what I envision and why I think Keller would be a great fit.

..LT Einhorn. Fair points. But Ireland does get a chance to develop as well. He has made mistakes. He may have been to stubborn in the past by sticking to a philosophy he was taught. He as so much addmitted that in an interview a few years back when asked if he would change the way he went about evaluating players. He said the blueprint was in place, and he wouldn't stray to far from it.

So that blueprint wasn't working. I will give him a little credit for going outside of his perceived comfort zone. He is still the GM. So hopefully for us all of this experience has taught him something. He has been given the gift of time to learn from his mistakes. Just like anyone else.

Is this a new era for us? For him? Can he build a team that is a serious contender? I don't know. We will find out soon enough. Maybe, just maybe like any inexperienced person. He is coming into his own. Perhaps his philosphy has been shaped by the failures of the past. We will see.
