DT Vaughn Martin visits Dolphins

The Dolphins spent the day visiting with unrestricted free agent Vaughn Martin today, the team announced.

The 6-4 and 308 pound Martin fits as a five-technique defensive end but also a 4-3 defensive tackle which is where the Dolphins see value in him.

Martin is not really a pass-rusher. He three career sacks in four season -- one sack in each of the past three years.

Martin, 26, started 12 games for San Diego last year and 15 games in 2011.

YG,

I love Austin but not enough to trade up for him. I would take him at 12 (if Lane Johnson is gone) as I am convinced that this kid is special. Not by any of my scouting (LOL), but what I have seen in the highlights, the comments by some of the draft experts, and some of the performances that I witnessed on TV.

Guys,

There's no way in hell to overpay on guys now left in fa. If there were, they wouldn't still be around right now.

The only thing left now are 3-4 million dollar a year players at max. Some even lower and approaching vet minimum.

Anyone notice how as soon as the Steelers got Wallace they stopped winning in the postseason?

That's my point Orlando. I admire your enthusiasm, but just reminding you nothing is a sure thing no matter how many pundits are strokin it.

Likewise, since nothing is a sure thing, sometimes you just have to assume a bigger risk. No guts, no glory. That's what makes it fun.

Don't be surprised if in the late rounds the Dolphins take a flyer on a QB like Landry Jones or Tyler Wilson from Arkansas. The Packers were able to create value on QBs like Brunnel and Hasselbeck while Favre was there and got picks for them. Ron Wolf was good at that as GM for the Packers.

YG, the deal between Denver and Feeney has stalled. Feeney want 6 million and Denver don't want to give him anywhere close. Your right prices are down but with our cap space we can offer a little more and tighten up a couple areas and move on.

Bodine,
Point taken.
Ireland put his money on the table and picked up the dice.
Personally I think the 2 LB signings were fantastic especially if the cover better than Dansby/Barnett.

No kidding grimes hasnt failed a physical. He isn't even healthy enough to take one! DUH!!!!!!!

Orlando,

I see Austin at bottom 1st rd, to a playoff caliber team, only ones who could afford to gamble on the smallish wr 1st rd. Non-playoff teams definitely needing a #1 wr, I don't see gambling with a smallish type like this.

If he's still there when the Pats draft, they would be a huge favorite to take him, with Brady being their qb and offense predicated around their TE's.

With Wallace now in the fold, Austin is only a luxury we can not afford with glaring weaknesses at cb and lt. I can more see a gamble on a pass rusher at #12 than wr. No matter it's Patterson or Austin.

Don't hold your nuts on Ireland drafting a wr #12 just after signing Wallace to a 60 million dollar contract. Not impossible, but very highly improbable.

I agree with you YG. No one worth going crazy for at this point in FA. Just play the waiting game and we may be able to ge a couple of guys that can be contributors but certainly no impact players.

Grimes took physical a physical in Miami when he was down here.
Reported by: SB Nation, Sun-Sentinel, Fan Nation, NFL.com, Chicago Tribune and on and on. Clueless people who make things up and are clueless shouldn't post here. Just saying

Bobby of course can't provide evidence. Just another faker trying to support his dump argument. The guy tore his achilles, he ain't taking no physical dumb dick.

HUUUUUUMM
I wonder if the way you behave in free agency, i.e., looking at players you don't really want, could mislead other teams about the way you will draft?
HUUUUM

Still, no longterm lt prospects left in fa. Winston's only a bandaid, he's now being passed around like a std.

Therefore a longterm lt solution needs to be found and found quickly. LT is the most important oline position in a passing offense.

I see only two longterm possibilities on the table.

1. KC drafts a LT 1st pick, do a deal with them, but nothing involving a 2013 pick.

2. At least get Lane Johnson in this draft. Hopefully he falls to #12.

That's it guys, our only longterm lt solutions. Unless, Ireland/Philbins feels comfortable rolling the dice on Martin as our Longterm LT.

Any trade ideas?
What about our bottom 4 picks for an NFL starting LT?
How about a 3+4+5 for a starting NFL quality CB?

Truth, your values are way off...there is a point system. Nobody is giving up a starting LT for bottom 4 picks, most of those picks don't make the team or are only special teams.

A torn anything heals, only if its ruptured, it doesn't heal. Then it has to be surgically sutured or cadiverically replaced.

If only torn, it will fully heal. Just a matter of how long only.

Why in the hell do they want another Jared Odrick?

There will be a run on DEs and OTs so, YG, besides what you said about Ireland not drafting another WR so high, yes, Tavon might go to bottom of 1st to a well established Team that can afford to take a chance on Austin

YG,

Austin has skyrocketed through the draft charts. Most draft experts are now saying he does not get passed the 16th pick (Rams). We'll have to see what happens with him but he is dynamic and is a match up nightmare.

Just gave multiple sites that all said Grimes had a physical in Miami. Stupid, lazy people who don't know how to use that new thing called Google continue to be clueless. I'm not wasting my time with a moron who can't type "Brent Grimes Physical" in a Google box. Grimes had a physical in Miami. Period

I think we have talent on our bench that have been hidden by the coaching staff on purpose. It should be obvious that Miller was held down after he got off early in the season. I think there are other players that were developed throughout the year, and have the capability of challenging for playing time at the least.
I think Samuda and Kaddu are two very intriguing prospects. Shelby also looks as if he could be developing nicely. Furthermore Misi may be moving into a position more suited for him than OLB, which I never thought fit his talents.
If I were a first year HC, the first season would be an evaluation of talent. Why play a rookie over a vet that you needed to evaluate. Keep the rookie hungry and judge complacency.

Chargers are probably the only serious threat to take Lane Johnson ahead of us. They sit at #11. Titans at #10 look like our best trade up hope without giving up a U.S. Mint.

Any other team I see aren't going to risk losing the player they covet by moving down to #12. Mocks have Titans taking Warmack, so, it wouldn't hurt as much for them to move to #12 because they still can take Cooper at OG.

Hell, some draft experts are now feeling Cooper can go before Warmack. This is what I have read, not my opinion.

As an aside, YG, the more I study Windows 8, the more I'm liking it. It's 2 platforms in one, gives you choices, you know?

I absolutely see no way Ireland drafts Austin past our more urgent needs. You know this Orlando.

I realize that you really love Austin. Just remember, youre dealing with Ireland as gm here. We are not the ones needing convincing. We are not the ones who will make the pick in April.

Its a waste trying to make your case to us. Son, you need Jeff Ireland's cell phone number. LOL...

Like anything else, Windows 8 depends on the individual user needs. If youre into your pic and videos bigtime, hell yeah its an upgrade. If not, then its a huge nuisance.

I had to take 2 intensive tutorials from which I understood less than 1/4 from what those It People were talking about. But I got the main Idea. They are preparing the next version of Windows, probably all touch screen for the diff portable devices. Correct?

Jorge Sedano throwing huge draft party at Sun Life stadium for all true bloggers.

Windows 8 also allows to pin your favorite sites right to desk top dashboard. Until you get used to all of the changes, it can be a huge pain in the ass at first. LOL...

Oscar,

I get along fine without trying to consume every new tech gadget that comes out. I buy them on as needed basis only. Most of its redundancy anyway, Just a slight upgrade to previous model.

Usually takes about 5yrs for one model to become obsolete. But model series change year after year. So, when I do buy something new and techy, I try to hold onto for at least 5yrs. Just being slightly faster or running more info doesn't make it an upgrade for me.

You know, I get these crazy ideas sometimes... With Internet TV, you could use the movement recognition technology to direct Internet just like the touch screen in smaller devices, no?

Bobbyd the reports say he took a physical not that he passed a physical. Any team would give him a physical if they are serious, teams are trying to assess if he's worse than they think and how long it would be until he can even play again.

That said they seem to be doing some amazing things with injuries these days, maybe Grimes will be fine.

I think I'm running off too far ahead here.

We can also take Warmack (or Cooper) and move Jerry to to RT. There are a couple of other RTs that we can take in the 2nd round. DJ Flucker, Menelik Watson, Kyle Long (that would be ironic), and Terron Armstead.

Here is a draft scenario:

1. Tavon Austin WR
2a. Terron Armstead OT
2b. Zach Ertz TE
3a. Jordan Poyer CB
3b. John Simon DE
3c. Le'Veon Bell RB (trade for Davon Bess)

YG,

You got it right. Winston is just a bandaid.

Back to Football. Misi has some pretty good range, I saw him make plays last year all the way to his opposite side but he struggles in pass coverage. Why not MLB? He fits better there than as a Sam or Will.

Many of you so called fans are making me embarrassed to be a fan myself!! The incessant negativity, bashing and all-around lack of confidence in our FO and coaching staff has GOT TO STOP!!! Sure, Ireland had quite a few bad years prior to this one . . . But, thus far, I have seen a plan developing and I have confidence that the rest of it will play out to give us a solid team next year. I believe Ireland uses our wealth of picks to trade up and snag a top LT (probably Eric Fisher) by giving up a second round pick then relies on the depth of quality CBs to fill our secondary needs with the remaining 2nd and 3rd round picks. A pass rusher would be nice but the verdict is still out on Vernon and we just picked up a couple blitz-happy linebackers. A varied blitz package would take a lot of pressure off of Wake until we can get him a complementary DE next year. This is a PROCESS people!! We are not going to become Super Bowl champions in one year . . . But with the PLAN the organization has been following, AFC East Champs this year and Super Bowl next year isn't out of the question!! Have faith and be patient!

If Patterson is there, I say he is the pick over Austin. I like LeVeon Bell, also.

Have you people who are campaigning for receivers been sleeping this entire free agency period!?!? We just signed three wide receivers to new contracts, have a solid slot receiver, and signed a pass-catching tight end!! How many receivers do you want?? We don't have a single CB worthy of starting and no LT (Martin is not the answer, he's better suited to RT)! You can have all the playmaking receivers you desire and none of them will do a bit of good if T-Hill is constantly on his ass!!!!

I also like Ziggy Ansah. He is raw but a tremendous talent. He can come in on pass situations this year and be a dynamic pass rusher and a major defensive play maker. He is also one of my favorites at # 12.

Vaughn Martin? Who is he? Please lets not return to acorn mentality again! I'd rather they move Odrick to DT and get Freeney for a year or two.

The entire receiving corp is tied to the talents of Wallace. If he goes down we are back to square one. There must be another elite talent at WR. Keller has a one year contract and is coming off an injury, not very dependable. I recognize the necessity for Ol, but back to the BPA strategy. I think Patterson has elite talent, a serviceable OL can be acquired in other ways without reaching in the first round.
If there is a lock in the OL,I say take him if not go for the talent.

THE THOUGHT OF DRAFTING AUSTIN AT #12 IS VERY EXCITING AND WOULD BE A MESSAGE TO THE NFL THAT THE DOLPHINS ARE ABOUT PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD AND WILL BE AN ATTACK THRU THE AIR FIRST TEAM. WITH WALLACE,HARTLINE,AND AUSTIN THIS GIVES THE DOLPHINS SPEED AND WILL MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STACK THE BOX OR PRESS RECEIVERS. THIS OPENS THINGS UP FOR T-HILL AND WILL DOUBLE HIS TD PRODUCTIONS. DRAFTING AUSTIN ALSO WILL SHOW THE DIRECTION OF THE DRAFT WITH THE REMAINING 10 PICKS. I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER MORE PRESSING NEEDS BUT IF WE CAN SIGN WINSTON AT OT THEN THIS WILL AT LEAST SOLIDIFY THE OL SHORT TERM. YOU CAN WIN IN THE NFL WITH A EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE AND A SO/SO DEFENSE. THE DOLPHINS DEFENSE IS NOT SO/SO IN FACT THEIR FRONT 7 IS VERY SOLID. IMPROVE THE PASS RUSH AND NOW TEAMS WHO FALL BEHIND THE DOLPHINS WILL FIND IT HARD TRYING TO CATCH UP. THIS EXPLAINS THE SIGNING OF FASTER LB, RESIGNING OF CLEMONS AND THE WAIT ON GRIMES DUE TO THE UNCERTAINTY OF HIS HEALTH. THE DOLPHINS HAVE LEARNED THAT THE ONLY WAY TO BEAT NE IS TO BE EXPLOSIVE AS NE ON OFFENSE. THE PATRIOTS HAVE WON THE DIVISION WITH A DEFENSE WORST THAN THE DOLPHINS. SO IF DRAFTING AUSTIN HELPS US TO ADD ANOTHER 14PTS A GAME THAT WILL LEAD TO A 10 WIN SEASON MINIMUM. MAKE THE MOVE DRAFT AUSTIN!!
