Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

Omar tweeted that the Lb'ers we signed can't cover LB'ers, in spite of what everyone has been saying about them.

This guy is a total idiot.

I do agree....

Dashi....you were right about the FO thinking when it came to Dansby and Burnett.....and if we STRECH enough....we can even give you credit for the "tanne will learn from the pocket"....

however....

When it comes to computers...and Operating systems....

I'm going to PEAR to get my advice.....

Dashi...like I told Fin4life a week or so back......stick to football buddy....

leave the side stuff alone...it will only get you burned....

Posted by: Vazman | March 17, 2013 at 10:38 AM

But Vazman Bush is a 30 year old running back on the backside of his career that would have cost us millions when we have a more than capable, younger, cheaper, better pure running back in Miller.

And we signed THREE playmakers on offense to replace one. So last year you said we only had Bush to make plays? Well now we have Wallace, Gibson, AND Keller. All great playmakers in their own right. Add on Ellerbe and you have 4 new playmakers and one departing. And you say it's hard to be a fan these days?!

I'm starting to notice a pattern, someone correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that most of the people who have been defending the teams slow, methodical, (not working) approach to free agency and the draft are now hurt that the team has got into the game and has been aggressive and now have questions.

I bet you anything these are the same people who defended Henne, Wilford, Sporano, Henning, Parcells, Cameron, Saban, Crowder, and every other person who helped our team miss a championship game for almost thirty years now. This free agency spending does not guarantee success, you're right. But staying the course? Explain.

Nahh, Omar said the Truth. It appears Philbin will admit no dissent from any Player(want wool over their skins? hehe). If not, he will get rid of them. At the same time Omar, that's Joe's prerrogative. I know we get attached to some Players, but...

Phins 78....

you hit the NAIL ON THE HEAD....

can I save that for next time Craig M shows up....so that he can have the pleasure of reading this as well....

@11:33

Agreed. LB's Need To Cover The Chains. The First 10 Yards. Your Safeties Should Never Have 100 Tackles Each!! I Don't Care If You Have Ronnie Lott Back There!!

Troy Polamalu And Ed Reed!! Have Never Had A Season With More Tackles Than Clemons. 99 Tkls From Your Free Safety!! not Even R.Jones(95)!! That Is Just Crazy!!

Clemons And Jones Were Both In The Top 15 In Tackles For Safety's. Each Team Gets 2 Safety's. 32 Teams. And The Fins Have 2 Of The Top 15!!

Kris, I would say that's mean but I believe Armando has actually said that before. Ha

I think the acquisition of younger, presumably "cover" LB's makes sense....our biggest problem was getting off the field on 3rd down..too many middle zone pass completions...and they came at a cap savings...

....we needed WR weapons...we added two...and their cap hit was less than expected..

....we needed a passing upgrade at TE...we made a change there...withn a one year, "show us you can do it" deal....

...we released a CB who couldn't cover as well as was needed, and a RB who proved he could gain 1,000 yrds, while the offense still struggled to win the time of possession battle each and every week...

.....the record each season for the past FOUR was a losing one... A CHANGE WAS BLATANTLY NECESSARY..

...so what is the basis for all this criticism and negativity..

...we wanted action, we got it...we wanted change , we got it...we wanted improvement ...NOW we need to wait and see...and be PATIENT and let it unfold before we go to thrashing the whole thing BEFORE it even develops....

.......does that make sense to anyone else ???????

......is anybody seeing this clearly enough to recognize that a little optimism is called for here????

......I hope so, really do...

.....

Of course, it is harder to defend the one that's down at the moment than the one that's up. I have always loved underdogs.

It is very understandable that Most people tend to go with the Winner.

Omar is in grave mourning of the late great Sean Smith passing away(dumped). Please respect him while crying in black veil and gown.

There will never be another great Sean Smith in Miami. The football gods have accepted our preist Philbin's offering. Omar Kelly moves to KC.

Dolphins not interested? i guess they can't give him more than Wake. i don't think Dumbervil will take less than 7 mil a year.

right on Buster!!

HowTH did UM get to the top of College Basketball so fast? Amazing to me.

Agreed and I keep saying this to the person who is always calling people gay. He doesn't get it and still thinks it's a put down. As if even the mention that one of us might be gay would send us into a blind rage. lol

I read those comments and it's like ,,,,meh, whatever. But I don't agree it's an older person. I just can't imagine someone over the age of 30 (like me) wasting time making gay jokes. I figure it has to be someone pretty young who had a bigoted and most like racist parent, maybe even two. Someone who is obviously very insecure and will hopefully grow up (mentally) in time.

In all seriousness the lbers are the most risky part of our free agent class.

The move makes sense. Our lbers were not overly agressive, didn't force turnovers, and didn't cover well.

Wheeler and Ellerbe did that last year although a few question Ellerbe's coverage ability.

The thing that is scary is dropping Dansby and Burrnett altogether. If one of the new guys flop completely it could get ugly.

Also these guys have to learn our defense and terminology and Ellerbe will probably call the plays. It could be a slow start.

Troll + Gay + a total dipwad = Jeff and all his names

See what I mean Jeff? No way is this person over the age of 25,,,,no way.

TRADE FOR ELI MANNING!

Posted by: DO IT | March 17, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Jeff, this one too. What age to think this young tike is? I'm guessing around 15.

During season finale at Foxboro, it highly pissed me off that our lb's would not jam TE Hernandez at line of scrimmage. The quick slant right off of the line of scrimmage was open to him the entire game. Our lb's never adjusted by jamming him at the line.

.....do you think.....(not 'to think'). God I sound like ALoco.

Dolfan Rick...by the end of camp and pre-sesson, these guys will have the terminology down ....of that i have no worry...

....how well they will play is the only concern....

....let's hope they play damn well....

...GO FINS!!!

Kris... I Don't Care If You Go To Peaches For Your Computer Advice... Dashi Never Claimed To Be An Expert...I'm Just Going By What I Know And Use...PC and It Would Be Nice If Google Finally Comes Out With The OS.

On The T-Hill From The Pocket?

Come On T-Sizzle Is Like A Son To Mike Sherman. Are We Sure Ms.Tannehill Is Not Related To Sherman? What Would You Do If It Was Your Son Playing His First Year of pro Football? You Make Sure He Learns The Basic!! You Protect Him!! You Try And Make Sure He Doesn't Make To Many Errors!! Make Him Run Plays He Already Knows.

T-Hill Is Already At The Facility Throwing Passes To Bess And Hartline. Wallace And Gibson Just Joined. Expect Big Things!!

Nobody Will Complain If All The Fins Do In Preseason Is Just Pass!! Get The Passing Game Worked Out The Run Will Come!! Specially If We Bring Jake Back And Have A Solid O-Line!!

I Heard John Jerry Lost 30lbs He Is Down To 350!!

Dolphins not interested? i guess they can't give him more than Wake. i don't think Dumbervil will take less than 7 mil a year.

Posted by: wallyfin | March 17, 2013 at 12:10 PM

DUMBERVIL? ITS DUMERVIL. HOPEFULLY WE NEVER SIGN A PLAYER CALLED "DUMBER-VIL". LOL...

THANK YOU LOL!!!!

You have no idea how happy I am that others are seeing this. How this guy has a job is a mystery.

Yes we lost so much by getting younger, cheaper, faster, and by getting players who actually make plays when it counts. What a travesty! lol

Shows you ghow biased he is, he's a coach hater. I wouldn't even let him in the locker room unless forced by the rules. Please keep Omar Kelly away from out players because he is trying to undermine what Joe's doing!

YG/4E

good point but jamming or not jamming is a coaching call, no?

Karlos Dansby is the best lb in the nfl. Just ask him, he'll tell you.

buster,

One thing thats exciting though is that it is apparent that they want to play wide open on both sides of the ball.

They are adding fast and aggressive players. I love Ellerbe's comment that he plays like his hair is on fire.

Posted by: Frankie Lampard | March 17, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Since it was the last game of the year, maybe Coyle was testing the IQ of Dansby/Burnett. A smart lb would have jammed Hernandez at the line of scrimmage without having to be told.

Kris please do. I actually had him in mind a bit when writing it. Haven't seen Craig in a while. I imagine we could be having some great debates with him right now.

For days I wondered why our LB unit was overhauled. I understood the Wallace move, we just didn't have a starting #1 WR. Just like we didn't have LT, CB or TE.

In my opinion the Dolphin LB's last season were to slow. They lacked speed in rushing the passer and in coverage. Great move by Ireland that was directed by Philbin.

IMO, some of the same who ranted Ross was cheap are the chief complainers we're now spending too much in fa. LOL...

Kris, I was trying to get cvaught up here so my posts are coming late. The mean comment I made was about the Armando thing. I'm sure you know that, just putting it out there in case there's any confusion.

Omar Kelly is not a Joe Philbin guy.

Frankie

You have to be able to jam at the line of scrimmage. Coaches call a play but linebackers are paid to see what is on the field. Rarely did Dansby even know what was coming. He always reacted. On passing downs you jam the TE or you are close enough to him that he can't make a play. At least knock him on his butt 2 or 3 yards out.
Burnett was better at this but still slow. I seen more guys run by Dansby than I can describe. He was not very good at defending the pass which explains his total lack of ints and stops at the point of catching the ball. Sure, he got to the outside and in on a gang tackle here and there. It was the rest of the d that did the bulk of his work. He would also rooster strut everytime he made a stop even if the opposition got a first down. That right there would have him cut from my team. You don't strut when you don't do your job. And that was to get the guy before he reached his goal.

Hell yeah Buster, well said.

The rebuild continues, last year was seeing what could be saved and used for the newly constructed team while the funds to rebuild were being found. No construction is fully under way and there are still questions about whether to replace the foundation of the offensive line or work to rebuild with him.

Yeah the construction analogy really does apply nicely! I just hope it not a rush job as the roof looks like it not held together really well with only one decent safety valve to stop the leaking into the attic.....I mean end zone.

Craigarrhea was here yesterday, in rare form. You know, enters, bashes every post he disagrees with. Then proceeds to post some of the most idiotic posts you ever wanted to read.

Nothing changes when nothing changes. LOL...

Ireland...Philbin..Sherman....Ross...Santa Claus..

....I don't care who gets the credit...as long as it works !!!!!

Since it was the last game of the year, maybe Coyle was testing the IQ of Dansby/Burnett. A smart lb would have jammed Hernandez at the line of scrimmage without having to be told.

Dude I've seen theories on here before that are a joke. This is not one of them. What a great point and something that can be taken very seriously. If Coyle did employ this tactic I would be ecstatic. That is a veryyyy smart thing to do. Last game meant nothing to the season but everything for next season, evaluation was the most important thing that day.

Seriously impressed and intrigued by this theory. If I found out the coaches did this I would throw a party. To have smart coahes in Miami that are agressive and think outside the box? Already starting to see some of that, this would put it over the top for me.

Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks
,,,this is the title of this blog post..

.....Question: Where's he gonna walk to?

...the beach.....

......obviously the Rams didn't offer what he thought he was worth...

...probably less than the Dolphins offered him, otherwise he'd be a Ram right now..

...so where is he walking to ?....

...into Jeff's office to eat humble pie...that's where..

....his agent , whoever it is, should be ashamed...

You guys think that I kid with Mark In Toronto about being in prison. Im dead serious about my belief in that.

He's always gone by 5:30 PM at the latest and you never see him here on the weekends.

If those arent prison library operational hours I'll eat my fking hat. Thats where he's using the computer.

Says he's a CPA, so I take that to meanhe's doing 30 to life for being a CHILD PREDATOR ALLIGATOR = CPA.

Dashi....

I understand....

but don't take it as criticism....take it as friendly advice........

Football is your WHEELHOUSE....live there man....and make them come to you....

last night you wandered right into an ambush,,,all because you got away from your wheelhouse....

take it for what's its worth...

"Then proceeds to post some of the most idiotic posts you ever wanted to read."

Just for the record, I never WANT to read any idiotic posts. But I enjoy coming in here so I don't have a choice. lol

OK, so just to clarify the one guy is a prisoner and you are a social misfit whose life revolves around a football message board.

What a winning combination.

Posted by: Phins78 | March 17, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Phins78,

Brady/Hernandez kept running the exact same route all game long. If anything Dansby/Burnett should have recognized and jumped the route for a pick, even if they didnt jam him.

Brady was throwing the ball to exact same spot and these bums couldnt identify to jump the route? It made me feel like we had the dumbest lb's in the entire league.

YG a lot of the office workers leave between 4:30 and 5:30 every day. Some of them come back after dinner for a bit but that's the pattern. It might be fun to think Mark is in prison and I don't want to take that away from you but if he was there he most likely wouldn't be wasting his day in the library talking to people about the Dolphins. So I don't buy into that theory, but the Coyle thing was a beauty!

we did yesterday, those guys were awful

Dansby Was Not A Miami Dolphin.

Ellerbe Should Get Over 150 Tackles In This Defense. Plus Ellerbe Can Catch!! And Tackle!! Dansby Was A Waste Of Talent!! Like Reggie!!

If It Was Only The Quick Slants!!

When Misi When Out The Game Against San Fran!! Kapernick Exposed That Side!! Because Dansby Was Slow To Get To The Edge!! Ellerbe Can Catch! Kapernick!! He Can Catch RG3!! He Can Catch Russell Wilson!! He Can Catch Jake Locker!!

Channing Crowded Was A Better MLB Than Dansby $ For $$$!!

Let's See Where Dansby Ends Up? How Much He Gets?

Ireland Might Rehire For 1 Year!! And IIC would Have To Eat My Words.

Posted by: in awe | March 17, 2013 at 12:42 PM

Actually its for the love of you that Im here. You wouldnt feel like a total loser if no one was around to make you respond like a total loser.

Even total losers need help. Im here for ya pal. LOL...

Yesterday's Gone same thing for you. Same thing Kris is saying to Dashi.

You're football posts are very enjoyable to read. You bring up good topics for debate and have some interesting theories.

But the whole thing with Craig and Mark? Why bother? Just ignore the if you don't like them. They're not even here and you're talking about them. Why bother?

I think that last Game of last Season was thrown, either by the Players or on Coachs orders so we could get the #12 in the Draft. Everybody knows that.

Irelands inner circle, I will never doubt your linebacker knowledge again. You are the LB prophet, we shall follow you across sea and land!

Why not just man up and admit it? You have no life whatsoever. None. Nada. Zilch.

I'll bet you post here with a bottle of baby oil right by the keyboard.

Ew.

Going to enjoy some ice skating with the niece and nephew, have a great day guys, go phins!!!!

What seals the deal for me concerning Mark In Toronto, I understand some get n a few posts while working, but he's "ENDLESSLY" posting all day when he claims to be at work. Start taking notice, no one has that much free time when supposedly at work.

Also, he's supposedly a CPA, and doesnt have a computer at home? For someone who loves to post "ALL" day long, you suddenly go "COLD TURKEY" on the weekends? Just doesnt add up.

He also goes "COLD TURKEY' after 5:30 PM at the latest. Very strange pattern for someone who post endlessly all day long while supposedly at work. A little something-something in the milk isnt clean about that guy.

Plus he has instutionalized behavior. Doesnt seem like a well grounded adult at all. Always talk of working out. Could this be the prison "REC YARD"? LOL...

According to IBN. The Colts may have got Victor Cruz.

Well, at least you never have to worry about the "at work" claim, right?

should of done that eralier oscar, might be staring at milner

pats and ravens fighting over dumerville
