Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

@ promichael......aha....someone with perception....kudos, dude

..Joe Lunardi(spelling) has in his updated bracket today. Miami v Montana in round one...Canes are goin' down!!!!

Ireland has been a wizard this FA. Even if he doesn't get Long at where he values him, he has the amo to get a top LT in the draft.

Ireland put himself in the drivers seat this season and hasn't stopped upshifting.

Escobar is listed at 6'6 255 lbs. I wouldnt exactly call that small. I also liked the fact he was lined up all over. That has o be a good thing playing in the west cost offense.

Escobar is a solid blocker, its rare to see a TE coming out of college being a great blocker. He's still a million times better at blocking than Egnew was coming out. His blocking will improve in the nfl.

Just get him the weigh room and bulk up his muscle. His frame culd probably stand about 10 more pounds(265lbs) without sacrificing what little speed he already has.

Great move by Ireland and no doubt directed by Joe Philbin.

When Ireland does bad, it is ALL his fault. When he does well, others say 'no doubt it was at someone else's direction'. This shows a lack of objectivity.

We don't know if it was Ireland, the HC or the DC pushing it. We can only guess. What matters is they are all working together and doing the right thing.

@ Lobo....I have to admit, Ireland pleasantly surprised me with his early aggressiveness.

...looks like he and the FO had a distinct game plan, and pursued it...

....hope this open-eyed approach continues thru the next few weeks and right into the draft..

....very encouraging times for dolpfans, IMHO...

....Go Fins!!!!!!

GO CANES!!! Gonna be ACC tourney champs!!

Guys I floated the possibilty yesterday about using our late rd picks 4-7 to get more picks in the 3rd and have a shot at more guys like Escobar, Wheaton and Montgomery .

The draft gets really thin after the 3rd rd. Any thoughts?

..YG..Yeah, I agree with what you are saying. What popped out to me right away was that he looked skinny in his pads. Remember I was going into this blind. I hadn't seen him. So I was trying to be objective. As I said really good player. The quarterback on SDSU was pretty bad. This may be a good thing for Escobar. because it is obvious he can catch the ball. Some of those grabs were high degree of dificulty.

Check out SDSU v Michigan 2011...There is a catch down the seem that is over 3 defenders. Impressive.

Go Canes! Class of the ACC.
Miami Heat winning streak still in tact.

..Dolfan Rick.. I think that we need to target a running back at some point in this draft. We always see guys taken in later rounds that make a difference right away. More that do not..But I would like to see a Jon Franklin in round 4(If he is there?) Perhaps Will Davis a corner from Utah State(again not sure if he will be around round 4) A tight end that I am very high on is Levine Toiolo from Stanford. He may be available in rounds 4-5. And perhaps a kicker in a later round.

@ Dolpfan Rick.......trading up sounds good to me...

.....of course it helps when history testifies that the move was successful.....lol...

....if they trade up and get it wrong.....someone is always going to look at the list of guys who are drafted after, and complain..."we coulda had him and we coulda had the other..."

...so it takes corage of conviction to trade up....but in essence i would think on average the higher round picks GENERALLY have the better percentage of success....

....so ...yeah...what the heck....trade up and get a shot at the higher rated players.....I hear ya!!!!

Trying to scheme the draft beyond the top 10 or 12 picks is an exercise in futility. You have to play the game live, as the draft board falls. Each GM has his board set, it depends who is still available in the later rounds, where they are, and then you are dependent on finding a trade partner at the spot you need for the picks you have to offer.

I would imagine every GM every draft has their trade up and trade down scenarios, but a small percentage ever become possible. Also 6th and 7th round picks don't carry much weight in trade up scenarios.

NFL U is NBA U TOO!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone wins championships except the Dullfins.

Agree with you on on Frankiln. Like him better than Mike James who Dashi likes from UM.

Sorry but cb's from Utah now make nervous after Sean Smith..lol. Although i think he went to Utah State.

I do like the UM CB Mcgee maybe rd 5 and of course the honey badger could be rd 4 rd 5.

There's more player turnover on the Fins then on a high school team. HAHA

Jeffy is the man he really is doing what he said he would do

We don't know if it was Ireland, the HC or the DC pushing it. We can only guess. What matters is they are all working together and doing the right thing.

Posted by: lobo
Yes, That is what matters.

Now to resign jake and trade bess for a 3rd rounder and draft Austin then watch out brother

Yes, Jeffy has us buried in the cellar forever!

Tavon Austin will be a dolphin number 1 pick

Jeffy is blazing new territory for most busts EVER by a GM.

Miami is poised to have more than 20 contracts expire over the next 2 years with at least 10 being starters:

Jones, Jerry, Incognito, Bess, Keller, Clemmons, Marshall, Patterson, Pouncey, odrick, Misi etc.

Many of you hate Ireland trading back but, I got news for you. In a deep draft, expect Ireland to do exactly that! He isn't just drafting for this year. He's drafting in anticpation of letting alot of contracts walk the next 2 years.

To keep the cap managebale in future years, all our draft picks are vital & Ireland must hit more than he misses. If not, we're in deep trouble!

Just tossing it out there lobo. And i wan't suggesting scheming it but going into the draft knowing you have that in you back pocket.

I believe we may end up with 2 4ths this year as well.

If you look at the some of the board and mocks it does get seriously thin at the 4th rd or so and there will be 32 teams trying to get the good ones.

On the other hand I do understand if we draft well all the good payers we can get are needed.

You guys are pathetic

You are losers and always will be

This was our best off season ever and you complain !!!!!!!!!

I can't say It would just break my heart if that happens but I just don't see it.

Between you and Dashi I gotta like the bpa approach. He says Lacy, you say Austin at 12.

I'm wondering though, who's gonna play cb. Therfore I'm gonna go with Xavier Rhodes.

Who cares about some of our dead wood we keep the guys we want to keep

Troll. Aint you the same name hikacking retard who says Jeff ireland has more busts than dolly parton?

Or are you the idiot troll that says that when D. Thomas was drafted, the draft room broke out in laughter?

Or both?

YOU FOOL NO ONE IDIOT, GIVE IT UP! Mando knows your hijackig names. You haven't much time ledt. Use it more wisely than ths.

Make no mistake. There is nothing good about losing the talent we lost this offseason. It was inexcusable with all the cap space.

Well we will find out who will play corner , I still believe you build through the draft and we have a boat load of picks a

Marc, get a grip. It's 1 moron hijacking my name & posting nonsense. Stop being suckered in by a troll trying to get a rise out of you.

He's winning

Irescum CANT build through the draft!! DUUUUHHH!

go canessssssss the u is rolling!!!!!!!!!

And who did we really lose think about it . A fumbler, a corner that can't cover , big deal

Jones, Jerry, Incognito, Bess, Keller, Clemmons, Marshall, Patterson, Pouncey, odrick, Misi etc.

The only ones we gotta worry about in that group are Pouncey and Jones. Marshall, Patterson, Misi...Seriously???

At 12? Take Patterson. Gibson and Keller are not long term answers and not going to turn us into a scoring machine. This team hasn't drafted an offensive playmaker in decades. Scoring points is the name of the game no matter how good your defense is. Take Patterson. It's time to make the passing game dangerous for years to come and we may not be picking this high again for some time.

Ok gotcha

Free agency is a supplement to the draft

we dont have a single corner worth a damn on roster

Right now the world is our oyster, so enjoy it

mike,LOL,our draft picks are useless,Get Sense, TGH= same turd troll.

What is wrong with people????

Rick, I just posted them because those are the starters who we can lose. Didn't say anything about who should be resigned.

Me personally? Jones, Pouncey & Misi.

Corner smorner it will be addressed

keep saying that marc all the way to sept

Philbin is building a winner he know what he's doing

Dusty have faith my brother ,just believe

Rick, I am not that moron. He is just using my name. I articulate a point. My clone uses my name to make fun of Jeff ireland. It should be obvious.

Sorry about that LOL. I got confused with the troll who was impostering you. I thought you were just being negative.

How can People here so categorically state that a Player is overpriced or not? Baloney

Make no mistake. There is nothing good about losing the talent we lost this offseason. It was inexcusable with all the cap space.

Posted by: TGH
Nonsense! There are replacements either through FA or the draft. Otherwise known as upgrades.

rick selection show in a couple hours, canes should be a one seed but ill bet the ncaa gives them a 2.

I know dusty and maybe it's me thats biased but it sure seemed to me like when UNC was ahead or the score was close Vitale and his partener was all over their jocks.

"The blue nation babyy". They said some good things about Miami but with a lot less enthusiasm.

Many here have turned into capologists(with the intention of not spending a cent). HoHO!

I am a Canes fan too but they really should not get a 1 seed. They are currently 9 in the AP and 10 in the Coaches poll. I actually think that the canes were lucky to only drop down to #9 after losing to the worst team in the ACC, Georgia Tech, at home a couple of weeks ago. I think if they had won that game they would be a #1 seed for sure.

That being said I think the canes are one of the best teams in the nation and even at #2 will have a great shot to get to the final 4.
