Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

Don't worry Guys, from what I saw Today, they won't go nowhere.

agree rick, espn all over same teams every year

disagree orlando. wont be 9 monday will be in top 4 or 5 after other teams lost. they are number 3 in rpi and number 6 in sos

Dolfan Rick,

I usually feel the same way about how announcers call our S. Florida sports fan but I really did not notice it in this game as much.

Vitale was all over Larkin's jock also. He kept saying he should have won ACC best player of the year, he is my pre-season all American guard for next year, on and on. A lot of praise also for Durand Scott, Julian Gamble, and Mcanny Jones. Carlolina fans probably could have said thesme thing about the announcers. They have to praise the other team too. I have certainly heard worst.

Just my opinion.

larkin will struggle next year with nobody at all coming back, they will key on him on defense. miami could finish last next year sad to say. lets hope they can get recruiting going big time with this run

I hear you dusty and an argument can certainly be made for the canes to get a #1 seed. However, imo, you cannot lose to Georgia Tech at home the last week of the regular season and be a #1. Don't know how the canes lost that game.

According to Volin, Miami might use Misi as MLB with Ellerbe & Wheeler outside. That might help the pass rush.

Violin is an amatuer worse then Omar....

they shouldnt of lost the game, they were playing awful coming into acc tourney and turned it around. ku a one? just got beat by 30. duke? no way they should be. indiana? 2 losses last 4 games. i think one seeds should be louisville, gonzaga, ku, miami

Canes #1

We'll see about next year dusty. The coach should be able to recruit well after this season. They will definately be young next year but I expect a big recruiting class next year. They won the ACC Conference, they ACC tornament, and we'll see about the NCAA tourneyment. Laranaga is the Howard S. of the UM basketball program; he has put UM on the map.

The only thing that can throw a monkey wrench into next year's recruiting class is Nevn Shapiro. I hope the NCAA has a resolution soon.

Fair enough Orlando. Like I said I could be biased myself. You hear enough of it and you just assume it happens all the time.

Dwayne Wade, King James, Chris Bosh, and Mickey Arison attend a lot of Canes games. That ought to help recruiting!!!!!

The Canes to me are one of the best teams in the country. We have had as good a season as anybody.

I think they have a great chance to get to a final 4. They just beat two teams on the road to win the ACC tournament. That was a biased and hostile crowd they played against.

Hopefully, the Canes will have a chip on their shoulder as a #2 seed.

Good point. Mickey Arison might want to spend a little time recruiting some boat mechanics though.

Ha!

I don't know why I get the impression that Dumerville (wasn't happy taking the 8 Mil. from Den) may have purposely after conferring with his agent mucked up that fax allowing him to see what kind of swell he could garner in FA. I heard a report that Elway was actually next to the fax with Dumerville's agent on the phone were the guy spent something like 5 Min. telling Elway it was going through before Elway pulled the plug seconds away from getting hit with that 12 Mil. on their CAP for the Season.

The whole things seems a little fishy to me given I heard the entire scenario as it was playing out on the LeBatard Radio Show. If not the case the gross negligence on behalf of the Agent should open him up to some sort of Lawsuit after being fired on the spot by Elvis which didn't happen. If the whole thing was planed then it was a BAD Yr. for it considering how many good players switched teams on one Yr. deals (Elvis in this scenario would enter FA as a 30 Yr. Old pass rusher in 2014 who is susceptible to the run game in the 4/3 (better fit at OLB in 3/4)

If not the case then the Agent screwed him and it may cost him money. In any event I'm not so sure in the open market it won't take guarantee's to get him inked and wonder even with his pass rush ability about adding another undersized DE even playing out of the 4/3. If Long doesn't resign and I get a feeling Jakie will for the same offer before relocating to St. Louis as is being reported then the conversation is mute and would really take the money set aside for Long and make a strong push for Sabastian Vollmer going DB/S happy in the draft early with some more WR's later (deepest positions) and go with that into 2013 waiting out the 2014 Crop of DL in the draft.

I HAVE HEARD OF THIS PRODUCT 'MILK OF MAGNESIA.' WHAT SORT OF ANIMAL IS A MAGNESIA? OBVIOUSLY A MAMMAL, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE. DO THEY HAVE CLOVEN HOOVES OR ARE THEY APE-LIKE?

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A 'MAGNESIA' GET MILKED. ALSO, IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL TO HAVE GORILLA ICE CREAM.

And do Magnesia's have teets??

Everybody knew there could be some snafu during thst tight window. Any mistake in timing......well, there it is.

What is the latest on Jake Long? Oscar do you tweet?

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000151412/article/richie-incognito-doesnt-want-jake-long-to-get-away .

By the way J.Van Gundy on TV saying the HEAT should concentrate on the 33 win in a row record and make it as much of a priority as winning the NBA Crown, is he HIGH!

For me comparison between Title and winning 34 Reg. Season games in a row is ludicrous! The flip side is doing that then getting beat for a Title!

CONGRATS CANES UM-LIFER! (As in all things Miami except for Loria's Marlins!)

You really don't want to go into my Tweeter page, Rick. Not of your interest, I'm sure. Regarding Long, I've never talked to him.

Where is Linda Robertson?

What is the latest on Jake Long? Oscar do you tweet?

Dolfan Rick | March 17, 2013 at 04:32 PM

NFL Net. reported right before HEAT tip off that Long and wife were at Davie facility being wooed by team and so far haven't seen any report regarding if still there or what happened but Ireland had him all day on a Sunday so 11th Hr. full court press in on!

LA-TEISHA is very kind.

We wouldn't want Incognito to be incomplete.

WELL, I WOULD IMAGINE A MAGNESIA MUST HAVE TEETS IN ORDER TO PRODUCE THEIR MILK.

I DO NOT WISH FOR 'MILK OF LINDA ROBERTSON,' HOWEVER.

Ha!, Rick.

Why not, T? Esta tan mala?

Even on Sunday this is the new Jeff Ireland wow wee

If we sign jake we really have flexibility going into the draft. All we Need is corners right
Dusty

hhaaaaaaa yeah marc. we need a guard, te, 2 corners, pass rusher

We can now pick 10 corners

I think this is the same JI as he always has been, Marc, he is just more experienced, more confident in his abilities and now, with some Direction. So he is doing his thing

you forgot rb depth dusty

jeez ima hava degree in astrophysics before long realizes his current contractual value to nfl teams. Lets pick up the pace jake. Canes fans....congrats.

I think it's having philbin and Sherman rubbing off on him Jeffrey is sure growing

yeah rbs so easy to find though

'LECHE DE LINDA ROBERTSON?' EW. QUE BARBARIDAD!

I WOULD NOT EVEN LIKE HELADO DE LINDA ROBERTSON OR QUESO DE LINDA ROBERTSON.

WHAT ABOUT MANATEE MILK? I WOULD LIKE MANATEE YOGURT OR OTHER MANATEE-BASED DAIRY PRODUCTS.

I WAS GOING TO APPROACH BEA ARTHUR ABOUT A PRODUCT LINE (MOSTLY GOURMET COFFEE CREAMERS)BUT SHE DIED. :(

Oscar,

Please get off this blog & focus on witter. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

how bout a little milk of Joli or Berry or Johannsen.... any body uo for that?...

Well they have been negotiating for a real long time I think they want to get it done today before theo owners meetings that start tomorrow

Why should I? I have offended nobody here. Even Big-T likes me.

...re: Van Gundy's comment....he isn't HIGH just brain damaged......

Since Parcells left I really don't have much problem with JI's drafting OR capology. He's hit and missed at a pretty average rate by NFL terms (could be better, I know, but hardly terrible) and did a GREAT job with the cap and giving the team financial flexibility this year and beyond. Overall, I'd give him a solid 'B' since taking the reins and definitely don't share--or agree with--the vitriol shown him.

Is he a 'cuddly' personality? No, not at all. He grates me at times, too. But Bill Belichick isn;t going to win any 'nice guy' awards, either, y'know?

I like you oscar

Yo Dusty....you left out 2nd RB from the list...

....just sayin''''

Even if I said you where a cigar maker in key west

It looks like the longs are dotting their I s and crossing their t s then an announcement will come

Sorry blog. I know I shouldn't encourage but either I have a good sense of humor or a very bad one. "I was going to contact Bea Arthur about a cofee creamer product line..but she died". Hilarious. LMAO. Where does he get this stuff.

Marc from nj,

While dusty is right about adding a Guard, T.E. and pass rusher, I happen to think we could live with what we have. If you sign Long back or take that money maybe add a little to it on the back end and chase Vollmer then we should go CB in RD.1-2 with BA T.E./WR in second pick that RD. Take a Safety RD-3 and add a pass rusher to groom with other 3. There is a kid out of S.C. that runs like the wind and has great meassurables that maybe a really nice project.

Bea Arthur appeared to be a tremendous dy.., well...

Well, for my part, I will continue to behave properly.

.....so it appears Ross & company finally figured it out...

....phone calls regarding the Dolphins ticket reward program numbered in the hundreds following the signing of Mike Wallace, as opposed to the usual 30 or so per diem.......

...the fans wanted change...and change was rendered..

....so even if it turns out to be change for change sake, the FO has performed its primary function from a business standpoint, viz sell tickets !!!

I THINK OSCAR IS VERY RESPECTABLE ,MAN .

VERY MODEST....

MOST PEOPLE HERE LOVES HIM, LIKE YG..

Big-Ts is my kind of Lady.

Buster,
I think the 2nd rd is too high for a RB. Although Dashi wants Lacy in the 1st.

We have Miller, Thomas, and Gray. With need a vet like maybe Cedric Benson and a 4th rder like Franklin from UCLA.

Just my opinion.

vollmer would be huge just to take away from the enemy, but we wont have any money to get him after we waste it on long
