Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

DC, had the same worries but, I actually did alot of research on it & think we're OK.

The contracts we signed, all of them balloon next year the biggest. Even after signing everyone to date, our cap for next year, without Gibsons number, was at $94.3 mil.

Assuming the cap jumps $2 mil, and Ireland carries over about $5 mil, that makes our cap a little over $130. Assume with Gibson contract it's $97 or $98. We'd still have over 30 million next year.

UFA would be starks, Solia, Jones, jerry & Incognito. I doubt they'll resign the guards & I doubt Solia & Starks both come back. Only 1.

In 2015, our cap number is roughly $108 mil right now without gibsons number and only Pouncey & odrick are the UFA.

Ireland and Aponte have been on their game. Miami stands to lose about 14 contracts next year I assume their goal is that all these draft picks this year will replace the guys we let go. Cheaper to have rookies take over than resigned vets for $1 mil each.

I can give you a link if you want to look for yourself.

I'll trust Wake's judgement on Vernon over yours LOL

Anyone else starting to get worried we have the potential into falling into the Washington Redskins/Philadelphia Eagles trap? Not saying I don't like these signings (and God knows we needed to bulk up on talent on this team), but if the dream team doesn't gel and perform, then what you have is a bunch of bloated salaries and CAP troubles in 2 years. Maybe I'm just having FA whiplash because we haven't really done this in 5 years, and now all of a sudden we are (and by the way, GB didn't do it much when Philbin was there either.

I hope this plan works.

DC,

Of course I'm concerned. The deals with Hartline, Wallace, Ellerbe, Moore, & Wheeler are going to count for over $45 Million against the cap next year. That's absurd for five players plus I have no idea how much Gibson will count & then if we re-sign Jake Long then forget about it...We'll be destroyed in 2014.

However, b/c Ireland is in the last year of his contract he has to win this year. Assuming we have a good season he'll be back but either way he's front loading these deals so someone--maybe him--will have to pay the piper in 2014.

I say f#ck Long & f#ck FA. I'd sign Garner to a one year deal if he agreed & be done with it. It's time to put the breaks on Ireland's shopping spree & shift the focus towards the draft. Right now CB & Tackle are the two positions that we MUST hit on b/c we need starters BUT our first round pick is wide open. As of right now--I can see us taking a CB, a Guard, a Tackle, a DT, a DE, an OLB, or Safety @ 12.

Dumerville, Long easier to replace

hey mando, your logic is good, the giants monster D-LINE gave brady nightmares, at times while playing the giants brady was reduced to something that resembled a scared to death rookie who couldn't make a play, especially in that superbowl.. there is not a fan out there who would NOT crave to have a dominating defensive front like that, but...how would we then be able to address the two glaring needs in the secondary and the need for a powerback and then be able to give tannehill enough time to throw if we have a turnstyle at left tackle... our draft this year offers better oppourtunities then we have had in quite some time, but we are NOT going to hit on each and every pick...by the way, how is OLIVER VERNON looking, and how is jonus grey rehabbing?

Where does this leave us at CB? Dumervil is a luxury signing. We need CB and O-line help. Sign Long/Winston/Vollmer, and draft Rhodes/Trufant at #12.

Jake and Jackie want Joe Thomas type deal: $84 mill/7 years. Hahahahaha.

When he wasn't broken 2008 - 2010 maybe. Maybe. Now, they are delusional. Dogra is wasting everyone's time. I doubt the offer is even half that in terms of $ and years both. $20mill/4years for an average to below average LT

CB and T are the top priorities at this time. I want to make sure FA addresses one of these positions. I really don't think we need to pay Long $8m at this point. I'd rather see them let Long go and use the remaining money on Volmer or Winston. Adding one of them to the OLine works for me. Maybe there would be enough to land a solid CB as well.

Then you turn the draft and get DE, CB, T, CB, TE, G, RB, S to complement what you already have in place.

UFA would be starks, Solia, Jones, jerry & Incognito. I doubt they'll resign the guards & I doubt Solia & Starks both come back. Only 1.

LOL,

Dustin Keller, Bess, & Misi will also be FA's. I applaud you for doing the numbers but the reality is that there will still be a bunch of holes to fill in 2014.

My biggest concern right now is if we re-sign Jake to a multi-year deal & he gets hurt again or just flat out sucks. Then we'll definitely have to replace him & also take a large cap hit for him.

The other option is to sign both but give dumerville a 2 year deal for 14 instead 1 for 8 and push one of their cap hits to a later year. If we don't sign long then we have seriously think about trading up for one of the top 3 tackles in the draft.

Jpao,

I don't think we have to do anything except sign a very solid backup like Garner. Vollmer is not going to come cheap & he was dinged up with back problems all season in 2011.

As for Winston--I don't know how I feel about a player that has been cut by two teams in two years.

Boulder,

I personally don't think we should sign either player BUT I agree that if we don't re-sign Long that trading up to take Lane Johnson may be the way to go. Trading up for Fisher would just cost too much.

BTW--There are still a LOT of teams that need Tackles.

WNP, they are but I doubt bess & keller come back. More liley Kellers replacement is drafted this year or Egnew wakes up & Bess won't be back. Gibson is his replacement next year.

Misi would be the only other candidate to come back and he wont break the bank. There may be better options like a draft pick or maybe the Kaddu kid becomes a player.

I any event; Jones, Misi & 1 of those tackles can easily be resigned with over $30 mil to spend.

Brent, don't care who you trust. Read the articles on other sites about needing another pass rusher and their lack of faith in Veron.

Wake's opinion of Vernon? Gee, that's probably not biased at all huh? I dully would expect Wake to sa his teammate doesn't have what it takes. Gimme a break.

Cant wait till we get a shot at the patriots. We might actually beat em finally.

LOL/WNP, good info, thanks. I think Ireland's thinking is get Philbin the core to turn the team into a WCO/4-3 defense team to fit his systems, and then in the upcoming years go back to improving via draft and not making such big splashes in FA. Fingers crossed.

Good points. As for Vernon--although I hope he can step up--I agree that we need to add another pass rusher in the draft. I wouldn't be shocked if we wound up taking Damontre Moore @ 12. Yeah, I know people are down on him after the combine but Sherman KNOWS this kid & he's a good player.

Also the CBs, doubt they last longer than 1 year (Marshall/Patterson). Actually, if they are still on the team this time next year, we've probably had a HORRIBLE year in the secondary (just a guess).

WNP,

I understand the concerns with Winston(being cut twice). But how is a guy like Garner any more encouraging? Garner has been in the league for what, 5 years? He's never even cxaptured a starting spot.

I have reservations about both, so I'm not calling you crazy. But Garner doesn't instill any confidence in my mind.

Also, I believe(though not sure)wasn't Winston caught up in the numbers game? His last two teams just went the younger/cheaper routes?

make long a FINAL offer. Tell him he has two hours to make a decision, then we move on. Apparently playon hardball os the only way to get through to jake at this point. Cant wait forever for him.

Mando,
I don't buy any of it! Ireland is going younger, faster, and cheaper if possible. So, I just don't see Dumervile going to Miami at $8 mill. He's mostly a 3-4 LB-type rather than a hand-on-the-ground 4-3 DE-type pass rusher, in my opinion. Besides, a better option would be to take someone in the draft; younger, faster, cheaper...

And, Jake Long has to re-think his worth and settle for what the market bears. He can either take a long-term deal worth a lot less than he thought, or a 1-year deal closer to what he'd hoped for and then try it again next year. And, I'm sure his wife will have some input in that decision too. She wants him to get paid, but she may not want to move out of Florida either. Can't have everything.

I think we'll have a decision soon from Long. But, pass on Elvis, in my opinion...

CB and oline help will come through the draft. Is anyone paying attention because its very obvious.

Id like dumervil but the line is pretty important. Would love tannehill to have plenty of time to locate recievers downfield.

The blood of tortured Cambodian peasants is on your hands.

Shame on you!

Problem with drafting a pass rusher is that usually you are not going to get great production his first year. When a passrusher come in and tears it up his 1st season, its the odd, not the norm. Not unless that guy has superstar written all over him.

Even the top passrushers in this draft come with great potential and also great warts. Lawrence Taylor and Bruce Smith definitely arent coming ut this year.

Im not saying that any of this year's passrush crop members will not put up great numbers in their 1st season. But picking the right one will be a huge roll of the dice.

Long knows hes not worth what he wants now ( hes known it for days) stop playin the game with him and make him commit or to hell with him.

@ vincent 2:10. Good morning dweebus.

Plus, in this blog you hear: "We need a pashrusher...We Need a passrusher...". Not that one who's a proven producer, is from the city of Miami, wants to be a Dolphin, and has now shockingly become available.

Now even some of you who have screamed from the mountain tops for a passrusher now suddenly balk. And you call me a flip flopper. LOL...

WNP,

I voiced your concern in a previous blog. I know it is all looking great right now but history tells you that building a team through free agency is usually a recipe for disaster and it could spell the end for Jeff Ireland. Great teams are usually built through the draft. I hope the fins' don't end up regreting this like the Redskins, Eagles, and Cowboys have.

I think Ireland is going overboard with all these free agents. I hope that he just brings back Long (7 or 8 million a year) and let's look toward to the draft. Draft 2 CBs in the first 2 rounds (#1 and 2b). 2a Draft either Zach Ertz TE, Sam Montgomery DE, Tank Carradine DE, or Barret Jones G.

Josh @ 2:10,

I would like to see Tannehill standing back in the pocket like Brady does at times. 8 to 10 seconds back there would make all the difference in the world.

It just made me sick sometimes. I would watch opposing QB's just stand back there scanning their reads COMPLETELY, then even going into the breakdown routes, STILL un-molested!!!!

Going forward, I think Wake, Vernon and Shelby will be the answer. The unit improved alot just last year and two of them were Rookies.

For this reason, I think I pass on Dumervil. All the sacks make Dumervil **SOUND** attractive. But he would be aging, undersized and playing out of position.

As for possible lockerroom discord or jealously of contract size. Wake knew that Dummervil was making more money than him, even while Dummervil was playing in Denver.

The only discord I would see is if Dummervil was making less than Wake in Denver and Miami brought him in and then paid him more than Wake. Then Houston we would have a problem.

Hell, Dummervil was going down in pay from 12 million to 8 million. So getting a teammate of Dummervil's calibre for only 8 million dollars should be something every dolphin in Miami's locker room should be estactic about.

Jake and Jackie, Inc are delusional.

Your right, Jackie knows that Jake is not as explosive as he was years ago!

Exactly why Jackie wants more money to buy her a new boy toy!

A wealth of good pass rushers in the draft --'nuff said!

#Asnah is tha Answer

Stay away from Dummervil and resign Long. If they lose out on Long, CB and OT are the areas that I would bring in one last FA. I would prefer bringing in Winston/Garner or Brent Gimes.

Odenseye agreed. Do you think we are better than the pats right now? I would venture a guess that we are. Obviously the roster isnt done BUT THEIR pickups are weak so far.

Orlando Dolphan, have to disagree with you. I believe the Fins need to fill the LT and one or both CB spots. They don't need to go into this draft "needing" to fill spots. They can then not only be competitive this year, they can also take best players available and build through the draft. I don't want high draft picks used on "needs". You have the right idea but I think you need to fill out this roster in FA IMO

And to all who witnessed my "fun time" with dweebus last night. My apologies. She was askin for it. Still pretty lame in hindsight. Try not to go there #nopromises:)

Dont EXPECT Irescum to gain anything via the draft.

Yeah "unmolested" as you put it brady will turn amendola into welker with perfect ball placement. Gotta pressure him.

is it possible to get both?

Not sure why everyone wants to give up on Vernon after one season. I would bring in a rookie DE in the 2nd or 3rd round to push Vernon. Bringing in Dummervil would stunt any development of Vernon. We need this year to take a look at Vernon to see if he is the real deal; sitting him on the bench is not the answer.

Todays signings will be exciting one way or another.

D.C dolphan yes i very concerned, thats been my take from the beginning. Its been proven the free agncy winner doesnt equate on the football field. The problem is Ireland in make or break yr whats he care 2 spend? if it dont work hes gone.Did thy overpay?Absolutly I can live with Wallace and i liked Ellerbe but at 7mil a yr for 1 yr poduction scares me.Then P. Wheeler give me a break. This is is 3rd NFL team and oh by the way we could of had him last yr at bout 1.5 mil.Yet here we are still need Ol 2 starting corners guess time will tell butif dont work back to square 1 again rebuilding and bunch of bad conrtracts.

Jason Nuhfer your concerns are valid, but dont give up hope. Wheeler not that bad and not all hodge podges of talent are doomed to fail. Eagles didnt have a plan for their dream team we do. Andy reid (though i like him) had grown stale in philly. And snyder and the skins never know what they doin. We might could swing this man. Give it a year, cant be worse than weve already been through!

What conjecture BS, Armando!

This december we should be playin the best ball weve played in years.

I guess the Dolphins dont care about continuity of players.

Bringing in Grimes is probably a Good Move.

Grimes played for NFL Europes Hamburg Sea Devils. Then two seasons in Atlanta mostly as a Special Teamer.

His breakout season was 2009. 66 tackles and 6 int's. Followed up with 87 tackles and 5 int's. Also 54 passes defensed and voted into the Pro Bowl.

Grimes is apparently the "Anti-Sean". He makes alot of tackles, breaks up passes and even CATCHES some of them. Who wudda thunk it?

So, for being almost 30, playing in Europe and missing most of the last two seasons with injury, he's kind of Low Mileage. He and Marshall can make up the Veteran prescense. With these two we won't have to depend on the two rookies we draft unless/until they're ready. At least not right off the bat.

Grimes makes alot of sense to me. His signing price should be very reasonable too.

It's not we'd be signing Leon Sandcastle!!!!

Our needs have shrunk considerably. The draft awaits us and with the help of the coaching staff Ireland COULD make us very proud.

Free agent DE Elvis Dumervil is interested in joining the Dolphins.
Dumervil is a Miami native, but the Dolphins haven't called his agent and may not be interested. Dumervil's rep says "multiple teams" have called, but NFL Network's Michelle Beisner reported Dumervil isn't drawing much buzz. The Broncos appear to be moving on from Dumervil, at least for the moment.

Hey Dashi, kills me 2 defend pats but have done much better then us over those 5yrs.If Long leaves nobody left from 2008 class. Our 1st and 2 2nd round pics from 2009 are gone.Chad 6th Haynsorth 5th woopie i would risk that at that tie Taib was good for them and just resighed by the way.One or 2 good players. Lets c of top of head.1Gronkowski,Hernandez,vereen,Ridly,Vollmer,Spikes,Hightower,Jones,Mayo,Solder, Mcourty.Boy would hate 2 c how would rate phins over that period.

bobbyd12,

That strategy of building a team through FA just does not work. We are a year removed from the so called "dream team" in Philadelphia. They had a similar off season, where they they signed the great Asamugha who turned out to be a bust. After the two year experiment failed they ended up in a worse position than the fins. They have the 4th pick in the draft and their salary cap is a mess.

The best teams like the Patriots have a great QB, a bunch of early picks, and they trade their older veterans for extra draft picks. They only give big money to their own Wilfork and Brady.

Maybe the fins will be the first team to succeed with this strategy (see Cowboys, Redskins, and Eagles) but history tells you that this is usually not the way to go.

Ireland- Have some confidence in your scouts and draft ability. Stop listening to fans and media and spending recklessly.

Orlando,

Dummervil's 29, Wake's 31, Vernon will only be 23 in October. Please explain how it stunts Vernon?

Look at Dummervil and Wake's ages(29, 31). If anything it will enhance Vernon's passrush beastiality to have 2 great passrushers to learn the tools of the trade from.

Having both Dummervil and Wake does not mean Vernon wont play. It means that he will have greater time to develop into the beast of a passrusher that we hope he'll be. By the time Vernon is 25-26(entering prime of his career), Wake/Dummerville would be coming off our books and we'll have a great passrusher, Vernon, already in house.

In the very prime of his football career.

I guess the Dolphins dont care about continuity of players.

AS LONG AS ROSS HAS CONTINUITY OF HIS PATHETIC GM HE'S HAPPY! LMAO!

This whole spending spree needs to stop, let long and dumervill go. Build through the draft and stop becoming the OFFseason champs of march. IT WILL NOT WORK OUT IN YOUR FAVOR!!

If they can sign Grimes to a low end 1 yr deal then fine, but this front office is putting too much risk in these big multiyear contracts their throwing at players like Gibson,Wallace,Wheeler, and Ellerbe.

Enough with Free Agency please. Its time to look at the draft for the remaining needs for this team.

Rick,

Many teams havent called Dummervil's agent simply because they have run out of cap money that they have to sign him.

Oh, they're interested, very interested. Im interested in buy the Taj Mahal, but I don have the money.

I hope you arent the same guy thats been posting Ross is ceap the last 4yrs. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best part of our roster...EVERY player has SOMETHING to prove. We gonna play angry, real angry.
