Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

I hate Long. He was our number 1 draft pick. He just cares about his big paycheck. You need to be proud of being a dolphin, and take a local discount instead of what he is doing... He does not represent, go away.

Does anyone find it odd that Craig M is nowhere to be found?

If you sign Dummervil for 3 years and I believe Wake has 3 years also left and keep in mind you also have Odrick on the team, then Vernon will sit on the bench for at least 3 years. By that time he will be a FA and who know if we will even keep him.

You have to let young players develop on the field. You don't let them sit on the bench for 4 years.

Besides lets ask ourselves, if Dummervil is so great why is Denver allowing him to walk. We made sure that we locked up Wake because he is dynamic. I cannot see us paying this Denver reject more than Wake. This type of signing is the reason teams like the Eagles and Redskins failed.

HOW THE HECK DO WE LOSE 7 STARTERS WITH ALL OUR CAP SPACE? ITS A FRIGGIN DISASTER!!

And i hope you arent the same person that crowned the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Champions!!!

I dont think its Jake, its Jackie thats behind the money grubbing fiasco.

If youre looking for Jake's balls, check Jackie's purse.

Wallace Ellerbe Wheeler SOMETHIN TO PROVE. Tannehill L. Miller Vernon SOMETHIN TO PROVE. Keller Lane our 12 pick SOMETHIN TO PROVE. In fact Wake the only guy with nothing to prove, and i think we all trust him.

I am not real big on Dumervil fan either, although he would make our pass rush awesome & make Tom Brady's life miserable. So if he is hard up enough to sign here for under 5 million per season I would consider offering him a 3 year contract, but I wouldn't sign him to anymore than that though.

After 6 years on the job Ireland is trying to build a brand new team. Hilarious!

I don't think the "Free Agency" Dream Team Tag applies.

The Eagles and Skins(somewhat)we're trying to get the final pieces and make a run deep into the Playoffs.

In our case, we've just begun a Major Rebuild. Even with Ireland's first solo draft, he was still looking for Parcell's/SpOrano like Prototypical players.

On defense he was drafting for the 3-4 defense.

So while gigantic Free Agency spending sprees have yet to provide the answers, it doesn't apply in our case. Ireland isn't trying to "Get Over The Hump". He's attempting to convert our roster over to the WCO and the 4-3 D.

I'm getting a little nervous over all the spending. But it's also tempered with an understanding of what Ireland's trying to do.

One last important note. Knowing what Ireland had to go through to free up Cap Space and pile up some picks, it makes me think that he'll be very careful not to put himself right back in the same bad position. I would expect that he and Dawn are being very mindful of the future budgets.

ValHalla!!!!

RIck he want 8+ million a year. In the long run this type of salary will destroy the franchise long term. I have also heard that he has attitude problems. That is why Elway wants him out of there.

No way Vernon will be sitting doing nothing. He'll still be getting on passrushes. With the pass happy league this has become, you rotate your pass rushers to keep them fresh.

So, if Vernon is maximizing his opportunities with high volume sacks and pressures. The higher cost Dummervil becomes expendable in a year or two.

Hoever, you cant underestimate injuries hitting Wake or Dummervil either. Like I said, in this pass happy league, 3 very good pass rushers would be a godsend.

5 MIL Rick? I like Elvis too much to rob the guy. Right is right, thats just f ed up. Lol. He was already gonna take a 4 mil paycut, now another three? He performed last season why cant he get his?

I respect your opinion brother but after the Culpepper fiasco i dont wanna be the team just openly screwing people over. Its bad business.

He won't get 8 milion from anybody this year. The market for good pass rushers this year is 5 to 6 million per year, so if he gets more than 6 from any team I'll be very surprised even though he is amongst the league leader in sacks every year & wants to play here.

And yes in OUR desperation WE f*cked off the back end of Duantes career.

Some of you are just getting carried away. FA has been a surprising success just with what we've done so far - signed some of our own key players, plus two new and improved and younger LB's, improved TE, improved WR's. Plus we still have the draft loaded with picks. It won't be doomsday if we don't fill every need in FA, we should be glad we've done this well so far.

You can't worry about every single hole or soft spot on the team, even SB winners have them.

That said I am really happy with Olivier Vernon so far & believe that he can surplant Jared Odrick (hopefully this year because Odrick is a bust as a pass rusher).

Earth to Orlando, Denver did not let him walk. His 12 million would have become guaranteed and they dot have 12 million to pay him. Can you spell all of the money's in Peyton Manning's bank account?

Plus, Dummervil and his agent were behind this ploy to get out of Denver. Maybe Dummervil saw what was happening in his "HOMETOW OF MIAMI" and decided he wants to come and be a part of it. It could be just that simple.

Saw Cleo Lemon play though....that b*tch owes us money! BABY! WHERE I PUT CLEO NUMBER AT?

6 then. Still think he gettin shafted.

I hope you arent the same guy thats been posting Ross is ceap the last 4yrs. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

------------------------------------------------------

ROTFLMAO - You KNOW it IS!!!!

Senso i agree. Rick i agree (odrick a bust). Wow i can be downright agreeable sometimes. Now where cleo number go......

OrlaandoDolphan,

Had we signed Peyton Manning, we would be close to cap hell too. Instead of 46 million to begin fa, we're almost half of that.

We probably have to let players walk just to resing a few and sign Mike Wallace. Our godsend is that Tannehill is stil 3-4yrs away to a big pay day.

Hey Mando,

Many thanks for helping me with Long's contract negotiations.

- Jeff Ireland

Get rid of all the Ireland players!

So you see guys,

Manning placed Denver in a huge bind. It was actually a blessing in diguise Manning didnt sign with us. Too much mediocre talent on the roster and we could never afford to sign Peyton retool the defense and give him real weapons.

Thank you Peyton for signing with Denver.

Remember, Denver already had very good players on their roster. They made it to the afc championship game with Tim Tebow.

ENUFF SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it just me or does Ireland seem to be acting out of desperation?

Now as a huge result of signing Peyton Manning, Elvis Dummervil literally falls into our laps.

Now many of you want to drop the baby.

The Pats and Jests are glad we didnt get Manning also!

Sorry fellas, it's been a VERY busy week at work. Just catching up on some things now. I missed about 85 per cent of the comments on here but I just wanted to clarify a couple of things.

I said after the first day or two of FA I didn't like what Ireland had done in FA. Let me clarify. I wanted Cook or Bennett. He got neither. So while those guys were out there, he's busy replacing Dansby and Burnett, something I would have focussed on NEXT year. While I'm Ok with the addition of Keller, he's not the guy I wanted. I would have paid for Cook or Bennett. That's just my feeling. Everything else I'm good with. I liked the Gibson addition. Originally when I heard the team was interested I wondered if this meant the end of Bess. I have no clue what the plan will be. Seems like a slighly bigger and quicker version of Bess.

I'm torn on Long or Dumervill. Originally I would have passed on Long, added Winston and yes I'd be interested in Dumervill. Great bookend to Wake. I'd need to think about it more. I'm just catching up now.

I missed most of the comments, as they related to me but the one I did notice was from DC saying I'm a 'contrarian'. Really bud? Bit condescending, don't you think? So what you're saying is, don't have a mind of your own, just agree with what others are saying? I gave my gut feeling on the Ellerbe and Wheeler moves. I think it's a lot of money to spend on, for the most part, two unproven guys. I didn't and still don't love the moves. I'm also disappointed Ireland hasn't added a veteran CB yet. Seems guys have been snapped up at reasonable prices and we've gotten nothing so far. Grimes or Cason I'd have interest in. Just get it done.

Also the Jake Long vs Dummervil answer is really a quite easy one. Ask yourselves:

Who would have the greatest impact for the team in 2013. A provenhigh impact pass rusher or a seemingly declining LT in Jake Long?

Even Vonte's Grandma knows the answer to this one.

Uh-oh. Dont drop the baby. You gotta kiss the baby. Child please!

Wheeler is proven. Saw hom in Indy for years. Not a superstar. Just a consostent tackler. Welcome back Craig.

Draft Draft Draft!!!! save some cash!!! resign Solia for ext.. Draft Draft Draft

5 Players Out Of 60+ Picks.

The Pats' Have Done Great In The Last 5 Years.

Look At It Again. The Pats' Have Sucked At Drafting The Last 5 Years. Specially when you consider The Pats' Have Used Twice As Many Picks As The Fins In That Time.

Name 1 CB The Pats' Drafted That Worked Out?

Name 1 Wr?

Name 1 D-Linemen?

The Pats Have Drafted

2 TE's
1 OT
1 LB
1 RB

The Last 5 Years!!

Yeah!! Belichek Is A God!!

Ireland tagged Starks and re-signed Matt Moore and Clemons.

Though I would have prefered locking up Starks, he was the most logical "Tag".

When you look at the list of QB's avalible this year, Moore's signing was Sweet! EVERYBODY expected him to walk too. And now we have an excellent stable with Devlin and Tannehill.

Clemons was a good REASONABLE signing if for no other reason: Depth with Starting experience in the system.

We've all been SCREAMING for a WR. The FO has TRIED! So Wallace is the latest Big Gamble. I don't have a problem with it. Sure we over-paid a little, but we HAVE to get the WR problem answered.

The same goes for Ellerbe and Wheeler. We over-paid, but we still came out cheaper than Dansby and Burnett. Whats more, with Dansby and Burnett, TE's consistently dogged us and we NEVER even broke .500!

I have no problems going with the younger, faster over-paid-BUT STILL CHEAPER pair! Good to Great moves here. We have to TRY SOMETHING!

With Keller there's NOTHING to cry about either. He's OBVIOUSLY an upgrade over Fasano and Ireland got him at a reasonable price. I just hope we draft another one and ARE NOT counting on Egnew or Clay. But that's another matter altogether.

Who else is there to cry about? Gibson? Not signing Grimes or Long?

This isn't about building a Dream Team through Free Agency. This is about revamping/upgrading the roster too fit the new systems. The final point that distances us from the Dream Teaming Tag, WE HAVE 5 PICKS in the First 3 rounds of the DRAFT!

All Hail Jeffy-lol!!!!

josh,

Thanks man. I haven't had a chance to disgest most of the most. I'd say for the most part Ireland has done a good job. I'm still disappointed with what he's done at TE, but Wallace, Gibson and Keller will help Tannehill. I hate to say it but I don't see Ireland drafting Eiffert at 12. I just don't think he values the position the way he should. To me it's Rhodes at 12 right now, unless he doesn't get something done with Long AND Dumervill.

Craig M still doesn't understand that signing Wheeler & Ellerbe has nothing to do with losing out on Cook. LMAO

FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME - Their contracts were paid for with the savings from cutting Burnett & Dansby!!!

AND YES, LB's WERE A MAJOR CONCERN! Ireland agrees.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT A NORMAL PERSON CAN!

Ireland was NEVER going to overpay for Cook, whether they signed the LB's or not. Get it through that thick Canadian skull of yours!

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE CLASSLESS INCOMPETENT GM! BOYCOTT AND HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

Craig M for Moron doesnt watch the games but comments on them. LOL

Canadiens talking MIAMI football? HILARIOUS!!

Another HUGE MISCONCEPTION!!

The Fins Are Spending All Their Money On Free Agents!!

NO FOOLS!!

The Fins Are Addressing Some Needs Thru Free Agency!! And Not 1 Contract Is A Salary Cap Killer!!

With All The Additions The Fins Made!! They Have Spent Less Than The Bills On Mario Williams!! Or The Ravens On Joe Flacco!!

Who Would You Rather Have?

Wallace
Gibson
Keller
Ellerbe
Wheeler

Or

Joe Flacco

Who Has Spent Their Money Wisely?

But Keep Spewing Your Dolphin Negativism!! Dashi Has Enough Positive Homerism!! To Dispel All Your Ignorant Nonsense!!

Keep Up The Good Work Ireland!! Just 1 Major Need Before The Draft To Go. Jake Long!! #1 Priority!! Get It Done Ireland!!

Craigarrhea,

Are you saying that it was a mistake to upgrade both linebackers at a cheaper rate? I'd say Ireland took advantage of a golden opportunity.

As well maybe he just didn't feel those TE's were worth their asking price. Maybe he said he'll overpay for one guy and that was Wallace. Remember he has a whole team of scouts working on the upcoming draft and he is loaded with picks.

Many have been saying Ireland should have used a higher draft pick at TE? Well, he just did, Keller's a former "1ST RD PICK AT TE" by the NY JETS.

Seems the scouts arent super excited by the top 3 TE's in this draft. Yes, they agree that they are very good, but none agree that any of them are great.

Still, we've signed a TE of 1st rd pedigree at nearly a beanstalk price, and still some here feel at disappoint.

There is a suppliment TE available in the draft if this staff isnt really sold on gnew. Gavin Escobar for example, can be had 3rd or 4th rd. He's a solid blocker with very good hands and basically replaces a Fasano. At a far cheaper cost to boot.

Ireland, being on top of his game, realized LB was far more of an issue than the average fan. Yes we need CB's, but we needed LB's that can cover TE's too, something every QB in the league was aware of.

I cant understand for the life of me how a poster can say that an nfl player is unproven, yet harp for picking certain college players with high picks.

That truly is "CONTRARIAN".

So, I guess everyone will act surprised when Wallace only gets 3-4 TD's playing with Tannehill as his QB.

Posted by: Shula 73 | March 16, 2013 at 04:05 PM

Maybe Ireland has learned that the sooner you surround a young qb with real weapons, the sooner you find out what he really is. No more 4yrs of clinging onto a Chad Henne.

YG,

How many aliases are you going to use on here? Tell us again, 'I don't use aliases'. Come on man....it's funny stuff.

Ome more time....please.

Shula 73,

Also why its a good move to resign Moore for two years. He's a stop gap if Tannehill flops.

Yeah craig, i like the keller move tho. Woulda been happy (thrilled even) to have fasa.o as a two but too slow for a one. If kellers legs are under him we good. And wasnt excited bout gibson till i saw he was six two 210 lbs. Good size i think.

Double Ply/YG,

Where is it CLEAR that he's upgraded the linebackers? Because they are younger? Look at the stat from last year. They're not upgrades. If Ellerbe is so good, how come he doesn't have more starts in the last 4 years?

Where is it written that I have to have the same opinion on the matter as you or I'm wrong?

Ome more time....please.

Posted by: Craig M | March 16, 2013 at 04:09 PM

OME MORE TIME? IDIOT!!

Upgrades across the board. You cant please everyone but sorta surprised at the backlash. Just dont get it. I mean a jet fan bashi.g these moves makes sense, but one of our own. Several of our own? Color me befuddled lol

YG,

I See You Are Gassing Up The Dumervil Bandwagon.

BUT

He Is Not That Good. 1 Dimension. And Stunts The Growth Of the Young Guys. The Fins Already Have 6 Legit D-Linemen. Without Counting Misi Who Might Have To Move To DE!!

And

You Said So Yourself. These New LB's Can Rush The Passer and Cover. Fins Were Only 4 Sacks From Being A Top 9 Team. Which If The LB's Covered Better The D-Line Could've Gotten At Least 8 More Sacks.

How Many Times Did You See A Pass Get Completed To A TE, When If The Coverage Would've Been Tighter It Would've Been A Sack.

Or

How Many Times Did A Qb Get Flushed Outside And The LB's Couldn't Finish The Sack?

can anyone tell me who's going to play corner anyone hard to beat the pats with no corners

Posted by: Craig M | March 16, 2013 at 04:09 PM

Who didnt see this coming a mile away? ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable that Im not the only one to realize what an idiot you really are, isnt "CRAIGARRHEA"?

You need to wake the fk up from your self-induced coma pinhead. Even DC turned on you when away on your sabbatical.

I guess that it was me impersonating DC yesterday too. LOL....

If you read the posts, you would even find that your girlfriend Child Predator Alligator Mark also turned on you yesterday. God knows I would love to impersonate your girlfriend Child Predator. ROTFLMAO>>>>>>>>>>

josh,

I'm OK with Keller. But there were better options available. If Keller was such a find he would have been more in demand and would have gotten more than a one year contract. He's slightly above average IMO.

What will be interesting here josh is all these guys that are frothing over Keller will be criticing him come mid-season because he's not doing more. It's the smae guys who have crticized Ireland for years but are now his best friend. It's quite comical really.
