Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

I dont thi.k people realize the impact these signings will make. A piece or two on d a piece or two on O and were the best team in the AFC. One of the best in the whole league. That dont make yall happy?

Me for one DC. Concerned about chemistry. Not only that, it's the norm that new vets don't play as well the first year in a new system/coaching staff. I'll worry about the cap when it's all in.

Good day to all (even dweebus) ima check back later see if thers some new news.

YG,

Here's the deal fella....I don't need to 'wake the fukk up' about anything. I couldn't care less about you. We all know you're running around under all these different names. You're a disturbed individual. Well all see that. Please continue, stop handing advice out to others and try worrying about yourself now. I'm sure you'll ramble on a bit more about this like your buddy LOL but I really couldn't care less.

Have fun...

dumervil is not going o sign with dolphins. He'll be back in denver or with whoever mike nolan is coaching now. Freeney,Abraham maybe. Think they want Long. Good chance Long will sign monday with miami I think

If Keller was such a find he would have been more in demand and would have gotten more than a one year contract.

Craigarrhea can't even follow his own logic. If the LB's we dumped were so much better than the ones we acquired, why are they still unemployed and why aren't the Ravens even looking at them?

Posted by: Dashi | March 16, 2013 at 04:13 PM

dashi,

Come to think of it, both Dummervl and Von Miller disappeared against Baltimore in the playoffs. They combine for half a sack each when both combined to make 1 sack on Joe Flacco.

That maybe very important to look at.

Need a RB with Bush gone

Craig,

Dashi Finished Celebrating His Victory For A Couple Days Now. Why Bring Back A Non issue Like Dansby?

Don't Make Me Take Another Lap Around The Track!! To Explain To You Dansby And Burnett Sucked!!

Take Your Loss Like A Man!! And Complain(Which You Would Have Nothing To Complain about) After The Season!! Or When The Regular Season Starts!!

The LB's Was The Biggest Need On Defense!! Since When Has Dashi Been Explaining This To You? Very Long Time. If For A Whole Year Dashi Has Been Explaining Something And You Still Don't Get It? maybe That "M" Does Stand For Something!!

How Come Nobody Has Asked About Dansby Or Burnett? THEY SUCK!! No Team Wants An Insubordinate Idiot In The Middle Of Their Defense!!

REMINDER TO CRAIGARRHEA:

Posted by: Craig M | March 16, 2013 at 04:09 PM

Who didnt see this coming a mile away? ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable that Im not the only one to realize what an idiot you really are, isnt "CRAIGARRHEA"?

You need to wake the fk up from your self-induced coma pinhead. Even DC turned on you when away on your sabbatical.

I guess that it was me impersonating DC yesterday too. LOL....

If you read the posts, you would even find that your girlfriend Child Predator Alligator Mark also turned on you yesterday. God knows I would love to impersonate your girlfriend Child Predator. ROTFLMAO>>>>>>>>>>

AND YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD FRIENDS HERE. LEAVE FOR ONE DAY AND EVEN THEY STABBED YOU IN THE BACK. I FKING LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL...

I'm OK with Keller. But there were better options available.

Posted by: Craig M | March 16, 2013 at 04:16 PM

Who says they were better? You?

JUST CAUSE YOU THINK IT DOESN'T MEAN THERE WAS!!!
GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!

Bennett was the first guy signed in free agency, was never coming to Miami! X him off your list of betters!

Cook wanted ridiculous money. Were you willing to give him the moon?

PLAIN DUMB!

" I think Mr and Mrs Long have grown used to 1st over all status, irrespective of performance on the field, as if it actually has any objective value beyond $$$

"

To be fair any phin fan who watched the last 2 seasons know that Long was asked to play hurt both times, and we really needed him to still play because even half hurt he was better then most LT in the NFL.

The Ravens tried to keep Ellerbe, all reports were that they were devastated to lose him. I think a super bowl GM knows a little something about the matter, and Ireland too.

Craigarrhea needs time to flush and dwell on it to come around LOL.

Hi there Dashi! SMOOCH!

The Fins are devasted losing 7 starters in FA. No one saw that one coming.

Posted by: Dashi | March 16, 2013 at 04:23 PM

OH GREAT DASHI,

NAME ONE TIME CRAIGARRHEA HAS EVER MADE ANY SENSE HERE? WE'RE WELL USED TO HIS RAMBLINGS AND BABBLINGS HERE.

THE UNIVERSE WILL BE NO MORE IF CRAIGARRHEA EVER MAKES ANY LOGICAL SENSE. BET ON IT OH GREAT DASHI WHO'S FAR SUPERIOR TO THE DUNCE HAT CRAIGARRHEA. LOL...

Nothing new to see here. Redundant Craig believs YG is the only 1 whofinds him naueseating and borederline retarded.

How long do you think he's been in that bubble?

The Fins are devasted losing 7 starters in FA. No one saw that one coming.

Posted by: Vegas Mike | March 16, 2013 at 04:27 PM

What everyone does see though is that you are Fin 77, MJ and the few other namess that routinely make a silly post looking to rattle someone.

CRAIGARRHEA WOULD RATHER GIVE COOK 8 MILLION DOLLARS WITH CAREER NUMBERS SIMILAR TO FASANO'S.

YETS RANTS ON AND ON ABOUT BEING UNPROVEN. THIS IDIOT WILL NEVER JOIN THE LOGICAL UNIVERSE. LOL...

Craig M....

what is comical is you NOT understanding the definition of CONTRARIAN even after DC broke the definition of the word down about as far as he possibly could....and you STILL get the opposite meaning....lol....

So i really shouldn't expect you to understand that we FIN FANS are happy with Ireland....and the job he has been doing thus far...

I guess you just expect us to hold a grudge against the man.....I got news for you....for most of us...its never been personal....If you...or YG...or DC....or insert any NAME YOU LIKE (here) was the GM of the FINS...and you guided us to 4 straight losing season's....then most of te NEGATIVE post would have been about you....or WHO EVER.....

The name is meaningless...the job performance is all I care about....and like I explained to Oscar (marc in nj) earlier....

Ireland is earning his respect....and I give credit where credit is due.....Mr. Ireland deserves MUCH credit for the way he has handled this FA period...even right down to the STARE DOWN with Jake Long....

"If he wants to blow some of the draft pick stash that he has worked so hard to create then he could move up some to get OT Lane Johnson

"

Id rather move up and take a CB then the 3rd best OT

sign Dumervill, Ok, and no money for Long, Ok sing Winston. Move on and sorry for Jackie.

I'm no one else. Someone did point out the 7 losses though. I dont think any other team lost 7 starters. WOW!

X-Rays on Craigarreha's brain are sure to reveal it is made of cottage cheese.

YG,

Sorry for the late response. I had to step out. When teams want to keep players they make the necessary cuts in other areas to keep them. The truth is Dummervil and Elway did not see eye to eye and Elway did not feel that he was worth releasing other players.

As for over paying for a QB, that is a different story. If you have a chance to sign a proven leader and hall of fame QB like Peyton you do it. When he took the year off for injury he was still playing at a high level. Ireland is doing more like the Redskins and Eagles than the Broncos. Again, I hope that it works out and if he stops now then we are probably OK but this parade of greedy FAs concerns me. A good GM would just try and work something out with Jake and then fill the rest of the holes through FA.

Kris,

You don't win in FA, you win on the field. The Bucs won FA last year based on everyone's analysis. I think they finished 6-10. Let's see how it plays out on the field.

And Kris, I spent no time looking at the posts or how DC explained 'contrarian'. I'll go back and look at it.

"If the LB's we dumped were so much better than the ones we acquired, why are they still unemployed

"

How quick would you have a job if you walked in at the end of a job fair?

Vegas,

So how do you improve a 7-9 team by not replacing any of the players that brought you 7-9. The roster has limited spots you know. Tell me you are not too stupid to realize this.

It boggles my mind to see people unhappy with the team.

We have a young and developing QB that has shown nothing but promise.

We have an OC who's been with our QB since he entered college and a HC that is offensive minded that has a strong relationship with our OC.

Youth develops and we are packed with youth.

We have one of the best Centers in the game and some good pieces around him on the line.

Our RBs have shown promise and I wouldn't be surprised to see us take another early this year.

We have a legitamite deep threat and solid depth behind him at WR plus a TE that has hurt us plenty over the years.

Our D line is so tight that they travel with each other in the off season.

Our new LBs have played great ball over the last year and seem to have good demeanors.

We have an up and coming Safety and his partner returning to continue the chemistry.

Our Corners are average but with players still available and the draft coming I'm not worried.

This is all Jeff Ireland's doing and it's coming togethet nicely. Problem here is some of you juat can't admit you're wrong or you've argued so strongly to the opposition that those who defend him may have said the wrong thing to you which in your eyes catagorizes Ireland in with someone that can't have a calm discussion about our front office.

We're all in this together so even if you disagree with moves try to show some optimism and a cup half full mentality.

Posted by: Kris | March 16, 2013 at 04:31 PM

Kris,

What you just posted is very great logic. Exactly why Craigarrhea will never understand. He enjoys taking shots at everyone who doesnt agree with his illogic far more than converting over to the logical universe.

Now that it apears Ireland is now crossing over to the logical universe, Craigarrhea now wants to abandon him too. LOL...

YG,

Are You Insinuating That Because Denver Has Undersized DE That They Were Tired Come Playoff Time?

Could Be.

Dumervil And V.Miller Get A lot Of Nicks And Bruises Big Guys Don't Get.

People Forget The Real Reason The Giants Beat Tom Brady Is Because The LB's And Safety's Covered Their TE's!! Giving The D-Line More Time To Rush The Passer.

The Giants Have NO DT's!! NEVER HAVE!!

So It Is Asinine To Think That Only DE"s Can Cause Pass Rush!!

The Whole Defense Is Responsible For The Pass Rush!! Not Just 1-2 DE's!!

Why Do You Think Aldon Smith Has So Many Opportunities? P.Willis, N.Bowman, and the Safety's Cover The Short Stuff Long Enough To Get To The Passer. Same Thing With The Ravens!!

Watch T-Suggs Sacks Go Down Without LB's And Safety's To Cover The First 10-15yds, Qb's Are Going To Hot Route All Day!!

"If the LB's we dumped were so much better than the ones we acquired, why are they still unemployed

"

How quick would you have a job if you walked in at the end of a job fair?

Posted by: corners | March 16, 2013 at 04:35 PM

Pretty quick if I was better than what a company already had.

If the NFL free agent market was like a job fair then we're on about an hour or two into the fair.

Dansby equals one year, 3 million.

Craig M....

I didn't say we won....I said I am happy with the job he has done.....

for the 1st time in what seems like a million years.....we seem like we are making REAL moves to win....the Marshall and Dansby deals were smoke screens....because they never got any REAL help on their perspective sides of the ball....just fan appeasements in hindsight....

THIS time EVERY star piece has gotten their "robbin" to go with the Batman.....

we will be ready come SEPT this year....

get happy man....

Kris,

Why don't you tell me what DC is saying as far as 'contrarian' is concerned.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | March 16, 2013 at 04:32 PM

Orlando,

Since last I posted to you, I reminded myself of Dummervil/Miller's 1/2 sack each in Denver's playoff loss to Baltimore. 1 Sack total for the entire game.

Im no longer as hot on Dummervil after reminding myself of this. Its even more important to produce in the playoffs than regular season. See: Anquan Boldin.

YG...lol....

There are various definitions of insanity. One of them is trying to reason with Craigarrea.

Kris,

First of all my negative comments concerning the moves Ireland made were right after the Ellerbe and Wheeler moves. He paid big money for them and still hasn't addressed TE sufficiently IMO. You and others seem to love Keller....I don't. He settled, IMO. He didn't throw the dollars about it he shouldn't, IMO. If Keller is tearing it up next year, then great...I'll be happy. It wasn't what I wanted. So my original point was the focus should have been elsewhere. I'm not sold on the two LBers he added. I think at the end of the day people will be disappointed in them.

I don't know why people struggle with me having that opinion and I don't know how that makes me a 'contrarian'. Please explain.

Hireland,

I think that most of us are satisfied with what Ireland has done so far. My contention is that I continue to see free agents even at positions where we thought we were fine. I am OK with the gamble on Wallace, we needed Kellar, the move to younger LBs is probably OK too but then he is looking at DL, more LBs, Guards, Corners, and on and on. It has to stop. Ireland signing so many free agents really speaks of his failure in the draft and his lack of confidence in being able to hit on playmakers in this year's draft.

I LIKE IT WHEN KRIS IS HAPPY.......

STILL,WE WILL SEE NEXT SEASON .
THE
CELLAR..........

The definition of insanity is dumping all of Irelands busts and allowing him to replace them with new busts!!

I Hate Ireland Because He Let Go Of Dansby And Burnett.

That Is How You Sound Craig.

Just Stating The Truth.

After Ellerbe And Wheeler Signed And They Cut Dansby.

You Disappeared And Now Have Come Back An Ireland Hater!! The Biggest Ireland Hater.

Dashi,

You kidding me, man? If you're thinking thast then you need to go back to school and work on your reading comprehension. You're not even close.

Are you really that simple?

Dashi,

You're 'just stating the truth' or how you mis-read my comments?

Saying we lost 7 STARTERS in fa is ridiculous. We've replaced 4 STARTERS in fa thus far.

1. Mike Wallace
2. Dustin Keller
3. Wheeler
4. Ellerbe

Only definite starters lost thus far are:

1. Sean Smith
2. Anthony Fasano
3. Reggie Bush(Also gained a starter in Lamar Miller)

Jake Long is still pending. So where the hell are the 7 STARTERS you keep ranting about?

Dashi,

And 'how I come back an Ireland hater'? You kidding man?

I'm expressing opinions. Has nothing to do with Ireland. I'm neither a lover nor hater of this guy. I support the Dolphins. I do my best to be objective. Some I like, some I don't. One things for certain, if the team's record on the field doesn't improve he will be gone.

The not-so-hidden bisexual agenda on this message board is always entertaining.

You guys know that Craigarrhea is brain dead. So why do you unproductively try and state logic to him?

Orlando,

Ireland Is Not Overspending. He Is Acorn Shopping With More Money. Ireland Is Still Bargain Shopping. Nothing Wrong With That. This Is The First Year The New CBA Really Is Affecting Free Agency. And Ireland Is Taking Advantage. Signing Free Agents for Less Than They Are Worth.

Are Ellerbe And Wheeler Top 5 Paid LB's? No

What About Keller? Nope

Look At Gibson's Deal? Cheap

Even Wallace!! Yes, Wallace Got Paid!! But The Contract Isn't Real Long!! And The Fins Can Let Him Go Without Big Cap Penalties!!

Ireland Is Not Going As Crazy As Some Of You Guys Keep Saying. Ireland Is Just Doing Work.

If Ireland had so much love for Keller he wouldnt have given him a "PROVE YOURSELF FIRST" contract.

SO NOW DO THE REST OF YOU SEE WHAT A HUGE IDIOT CRAIGARRHEA IS?

HE SHOULD BE PRAISING IRELAND FOR THE TYPE OF CONTRACT KELLER WAS GIVEN. YET HE WHINES LIKE A TWO YEAR OLD WHO'S LOST HIS PACIFIER. LOL...

If we resign Long then we still need a RT. Love Martin as a person and a LT, Like Martin as a person and hate him as a RT. The entire OL played better after Jake quit for the 2nd straight year(when we were all but eliminated)

CRAIGARRHEA RATHER GIVE 8 MILLION DOLLARS TO A TE, WHO IN 4YRS HASNT PUT UP NUMBERS PROVING HE'S THAT MUCH GREATER THAN FASANO.

WTF IS WRONG WITH CRAIGARRHEA. ITS NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH MORE ATHLETIC A GUY IS. ITS ABOUT HIS PRODUCTION IN THAT 4YR WINDOW. LOL...

Craig,

Before Monday

Ireland Had 2 People On His Bandwagon

Dashi(#1 Ireland Fan)
Craig M(Phony Ireland Fan)

After Tuesday and The LB's And Wallace Signed!! Ireland's Bandwagon Became A Train
Dashi
And Everyone Else (Even Kris Has Joined)

But Craig Jumped Off When He Released Dansby And Burnett!!

Crag Don't Be Mad ... I'm Better At Life Than You.

HOME- Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Carolina, San Diego. AWAY- Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New Orleans,Tampa Bay, Indianapolis. As it stands we have a better, stronger roster than every one of these teams. All of em. Whats the problem?

dashi,

Wallace was overpaid a million a year to get the deal locked up quickly. Wallace's father even said Wallace is far more excited to play in Miami than he was when first arriving in Pitssburgh.

So the million a year in extra love just ensured Wallace talked to no one else but Miami. Which is why we signed him so quickly.

Wallace could have gotten 12 million talking to other teams, but he wanted to play in Miami. That in itself is like a fking miracle. LOL...

Craig M, wh do you always ask people to repeat themselves or have them do things for you?

Have you ever heard of a dictionary? Instead of asking Kris what DC meant by contrarian, why don't you just open Websters.com & find out for your self?

The constant demand you put on people demonstrates1 of 2 things:

1. You have ZERO comprehension skills
2. You're so egotistical that you think people are put on this earth to satisfy your every request

I personally think it's both.

Posted by: josh | March 16, 2013 at 05:10 PM

Keller should do well against these defenses. At least 80% of them dont have great coverage LB's.

We didnt gain Lamar Miller any more then we gained Matt Moore. They were both on the team last year! DUUUUHHH!

Air is starting to escape.

can we please get grimes here
