Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

Dashi,

Are you saying that you think that it was Dansby who called Egnew a P---y?

By the way has Dansby or Burnett landed with anyone yet?

Seeing tweets that Long was at Dolphin's facility today.

no on long waste of money

I think thats pretty much where the bucks stop at free agency...Long or Draft!!! Just sayin!!!!

Long will be back! I have also heard that the fins are done bringing FAs in. That is really good news. The rest of the impact players (or starters) will come in the draft. Kudos to Ireland!

He will end up resigning 4 of his starters (Long, Clemons, Hartline, and Starks) and brought 4 new starters from other teams (Wheeler, Wallace, Kellar, and Ellerby). CB, pass rusher, and 2nd TE will be selected in the draft.

they better not waste cash on long. give it to dumerville and build a solid d. course it sucks right now since we havent a single cornerback

No kudos goes to anybody until the results are SHOWN on the field....these moves have potential rewards and/or also have potential busts written all over them...NFL GMS shouldnt earn praise in MARCH...thats what December and January are for....just sayin

agree super

If true good news on Long but bad news If Ireland is done in free agency.

Still need a cb. Grimes visiting Cleveland dusty.

u serious rick, unreal. we havent a corner on roster capable of covering anyone

SuperPHIN....

Really....

cause I thought thats what coaches were for.....December and January.....September thru NOV as well....

GMs....are pretty much for March-Aug...and a tiny sprinkling here and there due to injury or unforeseen circumstance....

yes kris, up to players either way. so we shall see how these new guys play come sept. guessing currently we are an 7 or 8 win team. but even u could throw on us right now

Dolfan Rick

You cannot build your entire team needs off of FA..miami has 9 picks in the draft and 5 picks in first three rounds..plenty of room to get 2 talented CBS,LT if needed, another TE and possibly another DE..thats five potential picks right there...Have patience..Rome doesnt get built in one month or in miamis case 2 decades!!!!

Pats resigned Talib as well.

super we arent starting 2 rookie corners unless we are desperate, which it looks like we are ,lol

Dusty...

give it a little time.....

little time. they said they are done with free agency. so we have zero corners going into draft

One more thing for those starting to give kudos to Ireland for this FA. Long before this FA, he did something else that is appearing to be an excellent call while under fire, and that was hire Philbin.

The difference I see - With Sparano the player loved him, with Philbin the players respect and admire him.

Posted by: Kris | March 16, 2013 at 07:30 PM

Coaches can only do so much Kris....the players need to prove their worth and time will tell if that worth WAS worth it.....I prefer the side of cuation rather than blind faith that miami has become better on the field rather than on a NEWSPAPER heading of crowned champs..just sayin!!!

man sparano was horrible. cam cameron, saban, sprano we have had some horrible coaches lately

Posted by: dusty bottoms | March 16, 2013 at 07:33 PM

Risks come in free agency as much as they do in the draft Dusty..but at a more expensive cost...just sayin!!!

never said they dont super

Not a bad approach suoerPHIN....

I'm not saying were SB bound...but i expect to see a greatly improved product on the field.....

get to that 28 point average that the SKINS jumped to this year....win some shoot outs...lose some....but much improved either way....

zero chance this team avg 28 pts less than one third of the league did that.

SuperPHIN, It's cool I don't have a razor in my hand or anything. I seriously doubt they'll start 2 rookie corners though.

They must be ok with either Patterson or Marshall in one spot.

1. Xavier Rhodes CB
2a. Sam Montgomery/Tank Carradine DE
2b. Barret Jones G
3a. Gavin Escobar TE
3b. Best CB available.

The rest of the draft best BPA. As for the CB position, we may be as strong as last year. Rhodes will replace Smith and the rest of the corners will be the same. Unless Ireland can find a CB nugget in the middle rounds.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | March 16, 2013 at 06:53 PM

I like every pick here except for adding another corner 3rd. Would like to see that pick become another wr, perhaps Swope. But Swopes would probably have to be the first 3rd pick and hope Ecobar(TE) will still be there with the 2nd 3rd rd pick.

Then the draft would be a smash!

Also, we could upgrade cb depth with a mid rd pick. Why waste a 3rd when its highly unlikely that cb will not be a starter?

Posted by: Kris | March 16, 2013 at 07:38 PM

Agreed, And i believe that we will see a more aggresive approach to scoring points in games next year..anythings better than 16 pts a game for sure...lol

highly?? we could draft a corner in 7th rd and they would be better than guys we have now

we avg 18 last year

Dusty...

that is my BOLD prediction for 2013....

lol....

oh..and that 1/3 rd was probably playoff teams....so we something to shoot for...

only saints and giants werent playoff teams

superPHIN/Kris,

This is what it's about. 5 years. No, forgive me, decade PLUS, of mediocrity. What does a team do in that situation? Do they continue the same path? Change a piece here and there? Or do they totally revamp what's there?

This is the 2nd time in the recent past. In '07, everyone knew it was time to change. So our Owner at the time brought in the Trifecta. They changed everything/almost everyone. They had a winning Season. But that was an illusion, the last hurrah to a dying philosophy in the NFL. They played it out for a few years (to no avail). The new Owner then flipped the script when he realized that wasn't working. He brought in a new HC with a new philosophy. Last year he was using players from the last administration. But he needed players to fit HIS schemes. So that's what the GM is doing. Might not work. But the last group of players DEFINITELY wouldn't have worked, we saw what they could do.

So this is EXACTLY what needed to be done. Success is secondary, we haven't gone to the SB since the 80's. It's about finding the right key to unlock the door to success. You need to keep trying. And as fans, we should applaud the team for trying something new. Maybe it works. If so, great, something to build on. But if not, hopefully the team will continue to move the pieces around the chess board, until they find the right key to unlock that path to winning.

1.Rhodes-CB FSU
2.Cyprien-S FIU
2.Warford-G UK
3.Wheaton-WR OSU
3.Escobar-TE SDSU

Actually looking at the draft. Things really start to thin out rd 4. I'd say using those picks to trade up where there is a ton of talent could be an idea.

=======================================================
Orlando this is what i posted this morning. We were close.

Why are so many with the "You cant build thru fa, bs"?

You're not paying close enough attention, Ireland isnt building thru free agency he's fortifying the roster. Only high profile move is Wallace.

Ellerbe/Wheeler is more about getting the future cap situation while adding youth and speed. If you dont see this you're Helen Keller blind.

There's not an expert in the league that will tell you Keller is a major sign. He's a 2nd tier TE that upgrades the passing game. Havent you been screaming for a 21st century passing attack?

Gibson adds great depth to the wr corps, he isnt a major signing.

So wth are you people talking about? Except for Wallace, all of the other moves are "SUBTLE" but also priority moves at the same time.

Geesh, shades of Redskins/Eagles? Youve got to be fking kidding me. Ireland absolutely did not try to go out and sign every big name fa he could get his hands on.

HUGE difference guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darryl at 5:51,

Egnew wasn't put on the practice squad because a player has to clear waivers before they can go on it. So another team could have picked Egnew and taken him away him from Miami.

I think they tried to do this with Clyde Gates, but hte Jets put in a claim and got him.

#12 E.Lacy.

The Fins Have Jake At The Facility!! And He Will Resign!!(Left Tackle Checked)

Yes!! Dansby Was The Anonymous Source Calling Egnew Names. Who Else?

Please Read, Adam Beasley Last Article. The Fins Will Be Going 4 Wide!!

DC....

I agree....

This change is good....and if it doesn't work...@ least we are going down swinging....

but these signings seem pretty much sure things....

If Tanne has half a pulse...we should be pretty good on "O" after week 4.....

thank u jets!

We DEFINITELY need another WR to develop. I like Bess, I like Hartline. But if those aren't your secondary pieces, your complimentary pieces, then something is wrong. We got Wallace, he's a major piece. But we still need another. And who knows if Gibson lasts long. We need our Roddy White/Julio Jones duo. We got enough picks to get us a CB/WR AND OL this year. If we don't get a DE, oh well, there's always next year, that's a less pressing need IMO. But CB/WR/and OL (depending on what happens with Long) are PRIORITIES!

Clyde Gates Was Cut.

Philbin Couldn't Stand Him. Copying Chad's Noises And Always Worried About How He Looked!! Not How He Played!!

Kris, I agree. If Tannehill doesn't use this talent and turn it into offensive firepower THIS year, then we need to reconsider that he's our franchise QB. Last year it was the talent, year before it was the system. This year we'll have talent + the system, so there will be no excuses to fall back on.

Ireland has addressed nearly all that seemed wrong with this roster in 2012. Hell you cant address every fking thing. That's what the draft is for. To finish the job.

Funny thing about the draft is 31`other teams get to pick too. So Ireland wasnt guaranteed to be able to address all of the things he's addressed so far in fa. Guys, please come down from imaginary mountain.

Ireland didnt go "WHO'S WHO" shopping in fa either.

Will Ireland's offseason guarantee us a sb? Hell no! But so far, I like our chances to be an improved football team, one helluva lot better than this same point last season.

Well said Yesterday, the Skins and Eagles were bringing in a parade of top tier overpriced FA's that never played up to par after getting their big fat checks that no one else would have given them. So maybe we did overpay for one player only in Wallace, well that is the cost of doing business and getting what you need. It made more sense to overpay for Wallace than for Cook.

still think Justin Hunter or Ryan Swope would look good as a second type reciever in miami....Tavon Austin too but will be gone by the end of the first round...heard miami liked him a lot!!!

Lot of love on Twitter for Jake Long. Pretty sure he re signs with Fins. As far as FA goes, I have never seen a team announce to the public they are "done". No UFAs visits yes today but I don't believe you just say your done. Where is this report??

dusty.....marshall and patterson arent great but they're ok/mediocre--not ideal but they could certainly start for a time until the rooks get up to speed--if you're drafting CBs in Rd 1 or 2, they need to contribute quickly.....so let the vets start early on and bring the young-ins in by early/mid season.

Posted by: NeMo | March 16, 2013 at 07:53 PM

Gates was making peanuts for money. So why would we put him on waivers hoping no one would claim him? Too resign him for less money when he was already virtually making no money.

Exactly how much sense would that make?

Dusty,

Your constant Grimes posts are annoying.

Firstly, there are 2 veteran corners who have been starters in the NFL on the roster. That hardly reeks of desperation.

Secondly, you fail to grasp that Miami is rumored to be movng to a zone scheme next year. Which does not force you to have premier shut down corners who can play 1 on 1 exclusively.

Thirdly, you can't build your entire roster in FA. How much money do you think Ireland is going to pay out. If Ireland was going to pay huge money to a CB, he would have done so by now. Long is the last big expenditure.

Fourth, unless you're living in a bubble, Ireland has signed healthy players on the good side of 30. He's not about to sign a guy about to hit 30 coming off an achillies.

Fifth, Grimes agent said they are just making visits and not signing with anyone until after the owners meetings.

Enough with Grimes.

what does Helen Keller blind mean?--isnt blind sort of, you know, blind?--do you need to name it?

It made more sense to overpay for Wallace than for Cook.

Posted by: Senso | March 16, 2013 at 08:00 PM

Dont let Craigarrhea hear ou say this. LOL...

YG @ 8:01 I remember this from Hard Knocks and I believe it is correct.

Ireland was talking to Gates after he had been cut. He said they had cut him, but were going to try to put him on the practice squad. However, the Jets claimed him,so they couldn't practice squad him.

wow, FYI is bringing it with some vigor

Not sold on Grimes either as a quick fix for this team at CB either, the man just came of off ACL surgery..you just dont know what you get with guys like that...which is another example of why others arent knocking the door down in new york for revis....

AP in minny is the exception to the rule of ACL recoveries but not the norm...I would trust a young draftee in Xavier Rhodes than Brent Grimes at CB

Posted by: Just FYI | March 16, 2013 at 08:02 PM

I would be comfortable with Grimes signing. But mostly its sometime early next week before we hear of it.

Grimes will have to undergo an entire battery of test regarding the stability and performance of that achilles tendon.

So thats why I say would be comfortable with signing because it means after all of the rigorous testing he will go thru. He's been given a clean bill of health. A healthy Grimes will be a huge addition as a starting cb.

Then draft Xavier Rhodes as the starting cb next to him and Marshall/Patterson fight it out for the nickel, with loser having to find a new team.

superPHIN,

You guys need to relax on the Grimes thing. You would think we signed him already the way you are frowning upon it.

Grimes will go extensive examining before inking him on paper. If he signed that means he's ok, if not he wasnt.

But I highly doubts Ireland signs him if those medical test dont conclude we were getting same pre injury Grimes that became a pro bowler for the dirty birds.

Lets just trust this and not jump the gun. At least thats what Im willing to do.

superPHIN,

Also, Grimes did not come off of ACL(knee) surgery. It was achilles tendon surgery. Far different thing.

The achilles tendon extends from the back of the heel ajoining to the calf. LOL...

We have $ left to spend. What are you going to do with it, atick it in your Arse?

I would go a step further than you Mando and talk w/both guys. See if Dumervil would take 6 million instead of 8. Especially if Long leaves. See if Long and Dumervil will split 8 to win a championship!!!

oscar,

Unspent cap rolls over into the next season. Why spend it all when you dont have to.

I would love to go into each new season with at least 5-6 million a year with rollover cap money as a gm. That alone pays for the next season's draft picks.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 16, 2013 at 08:18 PM

My bad....they had a report on atlanta website stating ACL surgery but it was later corrected to Achilles tendon...still think it would be wiser to pass but we'll see...
