Elvis Dumervil if Jake Long walks

Jake Long is back in South Florida after his marathon visit to the St. Louis Rams. Interestingly, Elvis Dumervil, a Miamian, is also in South Florida because the place is his home.

Both are unrestricted free agents.

Both are very accomplished players at their positions.

Both have flags.

Both have been to the Pro Bowl.

Both are likely to get around $8 million per season from the next team they play for. Both want more but, hey, that's about the market right now, guys. Maybe even less.

So if you're Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland do you continue to try to re-sign Long as he's been doing for a couple of weeks now? Or do you shift focus to Dumervil?

After all, the Dolphins would like Long back as a blindside protector to Ryan Tannehill. But they would love a pass-rush phenom to place at the other defensive end position opposite pass-rush phenom Cameron Wake.

Two possibilities. Can't do both. What to do?

I conducted an unscientific twitter poll about this Friday. I got over 200 responses in five minutes. Fans voted 95 for Long, 84 for Dumervil, 15 for both and 10 for neither. There were other smartaleck answers as well but they didn't get counted.

Of course, what fans want doesn't much matter to the Dolphins. Sounds harsh but it simply is true. They conduct business based on what they believe is the proper course.

But this is where I fall on this one:

I cannot fathom the Dolphins selecting Dumervil over Long because it would upset their salary cap structure specifically as it relates to Wake. Remember Miami's Pro Bowl defensive end signed a five-year, $33.2 million contract with the Dolphins last year.

It was a brilliant deal by the Dolphins because a 15-sack pass-rusher is worth much more than $6.6 million per season. Michael Bennett, a one-year wonder nine-sack guy just got $5 million for one year from Seattle after visiting the Dolphins.

Well, if the Dolphins add Dumervil at $8 million per how is that going to sit with Wake?

Maybe Wake is a saint and sees it as help for the team which is awesome. Maybe Wake even looks at it as a being a help to him because suddenly offensive lines cannot always slide their protection to him. But maybe Wake sees it as screwy that he's making less than a teammate who last year accomplished less elsewhere.

No, that's not simple Xs and Os thinking. But any team that only considers Xs and Os and doesn't think about chemistry in the locker room is shortsighted.

So I suppose I agree with getting Long over Dumervil.

But ...

What if Long goes to another team? What if all the effort the Dolphins have made getting him is for naught. What if the cap space they budgetted for him suddenly comes free?

Well, then I would say go chase Elvis Dumervil.

Turn a loss into a win if you can. Draft a tackle in the first round and replace Long cheaply while making the defensive line a monster.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, what about that chemistry issue with Cameron Wake?)

I call Wake and tell him the plan. I share with him that the move is afoot and it is meant to improve the team and take the team to the playoffs and perhaps even shorten Tom Brady's days in the AFC East. I make sure he understands he will benefit from this move.

I make sure he's on board. I don't give him the opportunity to complain.

And then I add a proven 9- to 17-sack guy.

Yes, he's short. Yes, he's 29.

But yes, he'd be a great addition.

I might tell a girl I am an astronaut to impress her and score. I wouldn't be so foolish as to tell a real astronaut that I am an astronaut.

Many people in this world want to pretend they know everything about everything. They are not humble. They strive to impress, even when they have no clue about what they are talking about.

It is sad, and silly.

Getting rid of 7 Irescum acquisitions makes any offseason a success. LOL

You reap what you sow!

..Yg..So I spent about an hour watching all sorts of video on Escobar..First off. I don't know how to breakdown what the coaches are looking for in a tight end. If I was asked to break down tape with scouts and front office people they wouldn't let me get the coffee and donuts.

I watched 3 games in particular. Boise State, Washington, and BYU.. I thought the Boise game was the best he had of the 3 by far. He blocked well, set the edge on the goal line. Was lined up all over the place. Made some very good catches. And played much faster then his combine time. The problem is the SDSU quarterback is was garbage. A lot of the catches in that game were difficult because the QB was so innacurate.

The bad was the BYU game..I don't fault Escobar..They obviously commited to the run in that game. I'm not sure Escobar had 4 targets total. The quarterback got crushed it seemed every time he dropped back to pass. Escobar did a good enough job when he was asked to block Ansah. IMO where he struggled is when he has to get to the "Second Level".. But all and all a pretty good blocker.

He would be a nice pickup for sure. Good hands, great hands actually. IMO needs a bit of work blocking. He also looks like he could gain a bit of bulk. I thought he looked a bit small in his pads..(not height wise)

AS MUCH AS I WOULD LOVE DUMERVIL I HAVE TO SAY NOT FOR 8 M. IN FACT NOT FOR 6M! THERE ARE OTHER FA PASS RUSHERS OUT THERE BUT I DON'T THINK THE DOLPHINS ARE GOING IN THAT AREA! THE PLAN IS TO UPGRADE THE OFFENSE IN FA AND DEFENSE IN THE DRAFT ALONG WITH BEST AVAILABLE! IN THE DRAFT I SEE TWO CORNERBACKS,TE,DE,OT,WR! THOSE CAN COME IN ANY ORDER! I WOULD HOPE THEY GET ANOTHER DEEP THREAT WIDE RECEIVER AND ANOTHER TE EARLY! I LIKE THE TE FROM ND BUT I WANT AUSTIN AT # 12! WHY? HE HELPS FILL THE VOID IN THE EVENT BESS IS TRADED AND GIVES US THE ADDED SPEED IN THE RETURN GAME (PUNTS). NOW TRY TO MATCH WALLACE,HARTLINE,GIBSON,AND AUSTIN IN A 4 WIDE SET! THAT IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS IN THE LEAGUE! AUSTIN WILL NOT BE LOOKED UPON TO BE THE SAVIOR OR WR THAT'S WALLACE'S JOB! NE, JETS, OR BUFFALO CANNOT MATCH UP TO THAT LINE UP! YES RESIGN LONG! DRAFT AUSTIN AND SIGN A GOOD CORNER(GRIMES IF HEALTHY) AND WE HAVE A GOOD SHOT AT THE AFC EAST!

Odrick only a run stopper Dumervil
Stop the run a hell of a pass rusher. You need to double or chip him with a RB. Than Wake will have a monster games. Beast mold. Like 21 sacks. I'm telling you guys. Plus D-vill only 29. That's the route I take go phins!

If anybody was curious about the new logo look. It was accidently leaked on ellerbes twitter account. Doesnt look that bad!

He might be/not be anything, but at this hour, Omar Kelly is still posting on Twitter. Hard worker.

WTH is in Arizona?

Dashi,

Another Saturday night spent on the internet blog. How sad...

Funny that Douchi started posting at 9;30 Friday AM and continued till 11:30 Friday night...
But spending 14 Hours posting drevil is nothing, Odin once posted for 37 Stright hours once and Yesterdays gone 4ever once posted for 27 stright hours...
Better luck next time Douchi.

Dashi,

I fully understand. They lay in wait to jump on my mistakes too. But the dumbasses count opinions as being wrong. So you know that automatically increases the count.

But they also know that I dont give a fk what the think. Never have, never will. LOL...

Just came accross this little GEM, YG,If Mistakes were a Crime, you'ld be sentanced to death...Multible times.

no brainer go with pass rush, long is overrated especially the last few years

agree dont waste money on long

Omar kelly lacks knowledge in football he is by far the worst writer for the fins he consta.tly throws them under the bus without knowing about players we bring in first. Like brandon gibson. And then says dannell ellerve and phillip wheeler are only pass rushers really omar? Do your homework first!. He never knows exactly what he is talking about but is on the correct subject if he was a gm his team would suck and hewould lose his job his first year. He even dogged out the honey badger tyrann saying he doesnt have skill and he is weak. It didnt seem to affect his play on the feild and deion sanders likes his skills and if sanders thinks you can be great in the leaguedoesnt that tell you something? I dont know about you guys but i have had enough of omar i will rather read armando's articles and a few others. Ireland has done a great job. I also heard it was leaked that if we cant land jake long we would land grimes because we have offered grimes a great contract and are still in the lead he is waiting up for the possibility of being signed. If we do land grimes we should draft one in the first address defensive end and offensive tackle in the first both positions are draft deep.

Some fans are idiots u expect a rookie that didnt take many snaps and was also said to be a project player with high upside and needs to bulk up to just completly be a .beast his first season. Wake up from whatever fantasy world u are in because even some of the college greats dont produce as soon as they enter the league. It usually takes a year or 2.

Why can't we do both? ... with perhaps cutting some fat salary? One name comes to mind, Solia ! Put Odrick at D.T(too slow for End anyway).

Here's what we know about Long. He's been hurt each season the last two years. And, it sounds like he wants a pretty significant bump in pay. The Dolphins know if he is healthy and can come back from those injuries and be healthy...they're medical team has been responsible for him for hi entire NFL career.

So from that standpoint, does it make sense to re-sign him?? If he's healthy, and the injuries don't set him back, he's good.

As far as the money goes, he may take "less" - even though for me $8-12 million dollars does not seem like "less" per year...so that he can stay in a comfortable place, play on a team that is at least appearing to try and get better, and make a push in the AFC East. (You have to say "try" because who knows how these guys in FA will play together?

I'd like the Dolphins to keep Long...AS LONG AS THEY BELIEVE HE CAN GET BACK TO 2010 SHAPE...and the money does not break the bank. They need to find some CB...the Long thing is annoying because they have not been able to focus on the CB help that they desperately need.

BTW: What are we doing bout our CORNERS!!?? We have no legit staters currently.

I believe we will get a corner cheap the market on them is very weak , so we are sitting in the weeds waiting to strike

Jake would complete our free agency if we retain him that would be the best case possible ,and we should re up Jeff Ireland right now!!!!!!!!!!

Question is can we score 500 points ?

Ryan tannehill should be very very very excited right now

those weeds are dying marc, grimes in cleveland

marc makes no sense to bring back long unless its at a very reduced rate, say 5 mill guy sucks and is always hurt. why waste the money

Dusty
Don't be negative we accomplished everything we wanted if we can go into camp with long back at tackle we can still draft one in the middle rounds to develope we really upgraded this roster big time ,and a corner will still come , plus we have our draft , we are in good shape

marc we have not, we dont have a single corner. need to sign grimes

Dusty
It's only march 17 th relax bud

Grimes is still injured torn Achilles' tendon

they are done signing free agents marc, scary

I like Tracy porter better

We are not done we have a couple of more moves

After the owners meeting there will be another wave of signings before the draft

We have come so far since the end of the season

marc that happened last sept, revis samething.

Revis was a knee , grime is an Achilles way different much worse

You can't alway get all of your needs in free agency , but I believe we will sign at least one

Keep hearing that rookie WRs take too long to develop and Dolphins were wise to get their WRs in FA. With the deals that Wallace, Hartline and Gibson got, many are wondering if the Dolphins will pass on using any of their initial 5 picks on WRs. That would be a shame if it happens because this year's WR class looks, if not better, then deeper overall than last year's.

Following are among the best 10 in team contribution of last year's rookies with amount of snaps taken during the season; receptions; total yards and TDs. A round 1 pick last year was a solid contributor even though 2 of them took only about half of the available snaps. Even if it does take a year to develop 2nd or 3rd round picks, isn't that a good investment for any team?

Blackmon, Justin Pk 5, Rd1 Jaguars - Snaps:982 Rec:64 Yds:865 TD:5

and revis tore his acl btw

Our first round pick will be a corner that's for sure

xavier rhodes and grimes would be nice

Well I agree that the Dolphins went in the right direction to get WR's. However they now need to pick another rookie speedster WR in the first 5 picks. Why? Because if Wallace gets a hamstring or ankle issue where is the deep threat. A deep threat opens up the running game, requires double coverage at times, opens up screens, short passes and keeps teams from putting '8 in the box'. I would think Ireland would get another WR in either the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

i would bet a lot of cash he wont take a wr in those rds. ton of holes so he better try and fill them.

He is a faker, an immature know nothing charlatan inflated with his delusions.

You just described Craig M.

Fine dusty bottoms your on I say yea he does. Even if he does not he should because of the reasons I mentioned. Moreover WR's are being pounded after the catch in the NFL. They will get injured and where is the deep threat if Wallace goes down for a game or two?

Yeah, that makes sense. After the Owner's meeting.

We'll continue to stink until we get an elite QB.

I don't know these 2 new LBs. Are they same Players as Dansby and Burnett. I'm worried, worried...

I see dashi got spanked last night and is still too ashamed to come back!

Meanwhile, Craigarrhea remains in hibernation after getting gangbanged left right and upside down yesterday afternoon and is still confused as to what even happened.

Enjoy it while it lasts....

Only advantage for a top-of-the line Professional in this Country is that you need not take BS fron anybody, Ah, you need my help...Hmm
