ESPN: Dolphins calling about Charles Woodson

A few weeks ago the Green Bay Packers cut safety Charles Woodson, a likely future Hall of Fame candidate, in order to clear salary cap space.

That made Woodson a free agent able to sign with any team he likes. Now ESPN's Josina Anderson is reporting that multiple teams have inquired about Woodson -- including the Miami Dolphins.

Citing NFL sources, Anderson says the Seahawks, Jets, Dolphins, and Giants have called to discuss Woodson as a possible addition.

Hmmm.

I reached out to the Dolphins to ask if there is interest in Woodson and the reaction I got was like, "huh?"

Seriously. That was the text I got. It wasn't a denial, but neither did it seem like the Dolphins are fully in on the idea of adding Woodson.

Nonetheless, assuming the report is accurate -- and I must say Anderson is a crack reporter -- the Dolphins showing any interest in Woodson is a little out of character.

[Update: The report is accurate. Another Dolphins person is saying the Dolphins have called about Woodson.]

[Update 2: Now I'm told by someone else with the team the interest level in Woodson is "moderate."]

Yes, Woodson played the last seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers after joining the team as an unrestricted fee agent. Yes, Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin was in Green Bay for six of those years as an offensive assistant.

But Woodson will be 37 years old in October. And everything the team has told me about its free agency approach includes the idea of adding young players in the prime of their careers that will be able to contribute for years to come. So I'd understand this if Woodson was 27 rather than going on 37.

There's also the matter of Woodson's health. He missed all but seven games last season with a broken collarbone. And did I mention he's going to be 37?

Nonetheless, the Dolphins do need help at safety. Chris Clemons is an unrestricted free agent. More importantly, Miami desperately needs a playmaker in the defensive backfield and Woodson is all that -- with 26 interceptions in the last five seasons. He also forced 12 fumbles during that span.

But there is a rub:

Anderson tweeted she spoke with Woodson's agent Carl Poston and related this:

"Agent Carl Poston to me on Charles Woodson: 'I talked to Charles Woodson yesterday and we're discussing possible upcoming visits. There are a number of teams that have expressed interest in him. He is still interested in playing for a contender.'

Alrightie then.

Then why is he talking with the Dolphins?

The Dolphins are not today a contender for any type of championship. Sorry if that offends your fan sensibilities, but that's the truth. The club has had four consecutive non-playoff, losing seasons. The team has multiple needs. The quarterback has not yet proven he's elite. The team plays in the same division as the New England Patriots. And the last time the teams met, the Patriots dismantled the Dolphins in a season they swept the Dolphins and won five more games than Miami.

So if Woodson, who has said he wants to win another Super Bowl, is picking teams based on that, he might want to eliminate both the Dolphins and Jets from that group Anderson relayed.

But I guess anything is possible. (Not really).

Heck, even HenneBust and TanneBust would look good on a highlight reel! LOL

...Here is the thing about Ertz...Tiger Sam you said it great. He is a system tight end. Here is the deal, and I debated this with Dashi....I think we are going to see more 2 tight end sets this year..We couldn't do it last year because our personel was deficient.

Enter Ertz..He would be the perfect guy to compliment Fasano. He knows the the WCO(Stanford) And his skill set is exactly what we need if in fact we are going to run more 2TE sets. He could also be had in round 2.

Now I may be wrong, and the Phins have no plan on using this formation. Thus my idea about Ertz goes out the window.

Also..I have no idea how the team has each player graded. Is Eifert at 12 a reach? To me it is. But so are the guys that play corner that may be available. The standard IMO is that corner has a higher positional value then TE(If you need both)..To me the situation at corner is much more dire then Tight end. Again just my thought.

So..If it goes as I think.(which never does, so you can stop here) we will run more 2 tight ens sets, make a go at Ertz in round 2, and draft a corner in round 1.

Brilliant???

You forgot 1. Putting your sausage into bloggers.

Posted by: ITS TRUE |

Give me your number so we can set that up. You need my e-mail?

I AGREE GUYS WE NEED TO UPGRADE THE TIGHTEND POSITION BUT DO WE ADDRESS THAT AT #12 OR DO WE TAKE CARE OTHER NEEDS? THE ONLY ANSWER TO THAT IS WHAT IS STILL AVAILABLE. I LIKE EIFERT BETTER BECAUSE OF ATHLETIC ABILITY AND I LIKE FASANO AS A BACKUP AND CLAY AS 3RD OPTION WHO CAN ALSO COME OUT OF THE BACKFIELD. AS FOR THE ROOKIE FROM LAST YEAR PLEASE CUT HIS ASS!! IF PLAYERS HAVE NO FAITH IN HIM AND SHERMAN ALREADY SAID HE WOULD CUT HIM, THEN IT DOESN'T TAKE A GENIUS TO KNOW HE IS GARBAGE !EVERYONE KNOWS THIS BUT IRELAND ! I JUST HOPE HE DOES NOT SCREW UP THE WALLACE DEAL! WE ALL WATCH SPORTS CENTER AND SO DOES WALLACE! RIGHT NOW HE IS WEIGHING HIS OPTIONS NOT JUST MONEY BUT THE THOUGHT OF PLAYING IN THE CITY OF HIS CHOICE! THAT ALSO PLAYS IN THE DOLPHINS HANDS! SO IT WILL COME DOWN TO OFFERING HIM THE BEST OFFER AND NOT LET ANYONE ELSE OUT BID YOU! FORGET PLAYING FOR A CONTENDER, HE HAS DONE THAT, RIGHT NOW HE WANTS TO GET PAID AND ENJOY LIFE AS A YOUNG MILLIONAIRE ! WHAT BETTER WAY TO DO THAT THAN S BEACH? ASK WADE AND LEBRON! CLOSE THE DEAL JEFFY AND NOW TEAMS HAVE TO PLAY THE DOLPHINS DIFFERENTLY THAN YEARS PAST! AND WITH A GOOD TIGHTEND LIKE EIFERT I CAN SEE 3 MORE VICTORIES IN 2013! GO DOLPHINS! CLOSE THE DEAL! SIGN WALLACE!

Jeff Ireland:

"I think Michael Egnew will be a very good player for us this year."

....And down goes Frazier!............................

Why not? A collar bone is not a knee. That Miami sun would warm his old bones. If Philbin thinks CW can still play and contribute on the field and in the locker room I say it's a great move. One less need to fill in the draft...

Egnew is NOT a #1 TE either, and wasn't drafted to be. He was drafted to be in the 2 slot, we will get a TE whether in FA or draft.

YG,

What's with you dude? So everyone has an opinion that's different than your and somehow we're wrong and you're right? Do you REALLY want to play that game?

You're REALLY hung up on TDs. What's with that? How many TDs did Bowe have last year and yet the Chiefs just signed him to a 5 year $55 million contract. How many did Marshall have here and yet he was signed to a $50 mil deal. Do all those teams have no clue what they are doing, cause it doesn't jive with you? TDs aren't the only real measure of a player. It's about TEAM scoring. Is there a reason we can't have a more athletic target at TE than Fasano? Somehow you have a problem with this. Can you explain?

Jeff Ireland is trying to get a deal done with Hartline and your only argument is 'he had one TD last year'. That's great! How many passing TDs did the entire offence have? Maybe 12? So somehow that's Hartline's fault? There's room for Hartline in this offence. Jeff Ireland sees that. Most of the GMs in the NFL would see that. Everyone sees that but you.....and somehow we're wrong and you're right.

By the way, there's a lot of talk that Armendola is sough after by the Pats. Haven't checked the stats yet but I hope BB has his TD numbers from last year. After all, that's all that matters, right?

And YG, yes I think Ireland is giving us a smokescreen on Egnew. Go back and look and his comments RIGHT BEFORE he released Gibril Wilson. Sound familiar?

If you think a good plan is to but all the stock into Egnew, then it's a sure fire bet to get someone fired.

"4.76 but who's counting?"

Well obviously you are! ;) good one. ( I can't wait until Kris sees my smiley face and gets all hebby jeebied out)

Anyway, Ertz ran a 4.76 at his pro day and that means very little considering he clocked in regularly at Stanford in the 4.6 range.

Unless you believe a 21 year old kid is actually losing that much speed before he's even in his prime?
Players post lesser numbers all of the time at their combines for a myriad of different reasons. This is a known in the NFL. The league is filled with stars who didn't put up the same numbers during their pro day as they did a week earlier.

Love the last part of your post. Ross/Ireland needs to find a way to use Wad/James/Riley as a lure to get Wallace under contract.

Scares hell out of me Ross/Ireland would be the only recruitment faces he sees. Im from Miami, but if I werent, and Ireland/Ross were the only faces used to get me to visit Miami. I would pass 99 times out of 100.

There you have it, the probabaility Wallace lands in Miami with Ireland/Ross as the only recruiting faces.

Posted by: Craig M | March 07, 2013 at 02:02 PM

Yeah, the difference is he says he believes Gibril can be a very good player in this league, never said "for us". Go pull the post.

Posted by: Craig M | March 07, 2013 at 12:48 PM

I'm still on the Ertz camp. Can't understand how some can say he is a 'system' TE (whatever that means) or saying he is a 'crap' athlete. That is just clueless...I can accept someone preferring a faster guy, but saying he is crap or a system player is stupid.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 07, 2013 at 01:52 PM

YG let me say this is a huge pet peeve of mine. Fans taking everything a coach or gm say at their word eventhough the business is predicated on smoke screens and lies.

Not only that but this fact bugs me more. You twisted the story to fit your into your point.

Ireland was interviewed, in the interview they asked about Egnew. He said he thought he would have a good year next year and had hope.

Now name me one gm in the NFL that comes out publicly after being asked about a player and says he has no faith in the guy or tyhat he needs to work much harder or he will be cut?

Which GM makes this ultra stupid move? Of course he said he has faith, it was the only answer he could have possibly given.

he suxx.

CraigM,

Furthermore, you and can post your opinion, but when I post mine you ass-ume Im saying to everyone they cant post their opinions? What the hell is with you is the better question I'll pos "my opinion" again:

Jeff Ireland:

"I believe Michael Egnew will be a very good player "for us" this year."

Down goes Frazier!............................

i would love Goldston and Woodson.

Goldston and Jones as starters and Woodson on feild in nickle and dime which we need alot of especially against New England. there are also some good safties in this draft, Ried, Elam. ECT...to add depth and future starters.

draft defense....

Actually that's a huge reason not to draft a TE this year: to avoid more late-round dubious "projects" at the position. We have to realize Eiffert is the only solid, seam-threat capable, ready-to-start TE prospect available this year. He will be gone by first round. And Ireland is most likely not going to burn his best pick to draft a TE...

I mean, I really like Eiffert, but we have better chances to succeed if we ask the FO to upgrade the position through UFA. Ireland would rather wait one more season until Egnew finally booms (or busts...).

"Heck, even HenneBust and TanneBust would look good on a highlight reel!"

Yeah but you have no clue what you're talking about so why get involved?

You haven't watched both players or made any kind of declaration as to who you prefer if we take a TE so why not just stfu?

YG,

Now you're just being WEIRD!!!

'Down goes Frazier'? WTH are you talking about? So you're saying so no way in Hell Ireland takes a TE in the top two rounds, is that right? Let's see up an account somewhere and the winner takes the money. Fair?

CraigM,

And yes, I am hung up on tds. As a famous coach once quipped:

"YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME"

Not garner stats. TDS WIN THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... The 40 time everyone gets hung up on with tight ends is so completley over rated it has become comic relief.. Sure you have some fast tight ends. Does it help? Sure. Having the abiltiy to seprate, and having the ability to use your body to beat defenders is paramount. Do you think OC's matchup TE's on corners because they are going to beat them with speed? No..Pretty easy..big body-small body. Throw it up..win.

The idea that these tight ends have to be lightning fast in a 40 time or they are some how less worthy is just simply a myth.

78,it's qrstu
u dummy.
lol

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 07, 2013 at 02:05 PM

Philbin and Sherman aren't allowed to talk to the players?

But besides the point you made tyhe simple fact that 5 contending teams will be bidding against us pretty much puts the nail in the coffin doesn't it? I can't figure out why anyone would think Wallace is going to choose us over a team that is sure to make the playoffs and pay him the same salary.

On Tuesday Wallace is about to sign a big contract, but there is a snag at last minute. Wallace wont sign unless he gets his #17 as a Dolphin. Will or Should Tannehill Give it up?

Phins 78,

I introduced what Ireland said because everyone seems so sure Ireland will draft a TE high. I want everyone to see his Egnew statement because there's high probability Ireland may have been actually telling the truth.

If indeed he is, some here better have their hankies draft day because they will be very, very disappointed.

Arturo I obviously agree. We all watch football and when I read those things I knew right off the bat the people saying them didn't watch Ertz play at all. No one puts this kid down, only in a f%$#ing Dolphins blog do you hear this kind of blatant ignorance.

So what you're saying then YG is that you should have a team full of guys that get TDs, is that right? If you can't get many TDs you shouldn't be on the team.

You have some REALLY strange ideas man. I'm mean REALLY strange!! Not everybody can have a team full of double-digit TD guys. There are time when a possession receiver like Hartline has value. I'm actually not sure you even understand the game. I think you want a team full of track stars that can take it to the house every time. Pleas show me one team that has that and when you can't come up with one, tell me why?

I'm out....it's just getting to be silly hour around here.

YG,

You probably weren't talking to me, but I'll tell you my thinking on TE vs. WR. First, I DON'T think Hartline is indispensable (though I think he's a pretty good #2 WR). As far as TD comparison, not exactly apples to apples. Only reason Fasano had that many TDs is because the team got in the red zone (thanks to Bush, Hartline, Bess, etc.). Hartline is the semi-speed guy, the comeback pass guy, not the red zone option, so doesn't surprise me that he didn't have many TDs.

But more importantly, whatever Hartline is, Fasano definitely is NOT a #1 TE. Doesn't mean he doesn't have a role on this team, I want him re-signed. But anyone can see we have a need for a seam-catching TE that creates mismatches and makes the defense have to think about him and Fasano in 5 years has not been that guy (so why would anyone think he can suddenly develop into that).

TE has become an important part of the offense. That's why teams are employing 2 TE sets. In a game of creating mismatches, TE is ever more important. We've been burnt by team after team by the TE (Patriots, Jets, Chargers, Giants, etc.). It's time we give as good as we receive.

I personally am not married to any of the guys mentioned, but, like WR, 3rd round grade didn't really work out for us last time. And since I think this draft is more stocked with WR than TE, then it would make sense to grab your TE early and WR later.

So that's my thought-process. End of the day, unlike almost everyone else here, I will reserve judgment of the FA/Draft until I see the product on the field in Sept. If we go OT 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Draft, and the team is 10-6, I'll sing Ireland's praises.

Posted by: Hydrashock | March 07, 2013 at 02:11 PM

THE SMARTEST MAN IN THE HOUSE. BORDERS A LOT CLOSER TO IRELAND'S LINE OF THINKING.

EVERYONE ELSE ASS-UMES IRELAND WILL DRAFT TE HIGH. WHEN HAS IRELAND EVER DRAFTED THE WAY ANY OF US PREDICTED HE WILL?

IM WAITING.............................................

I hear ya YG. I actually am stumped as to where we will go with the first pick. I guess free agency will clear a lot of that up.

I actually wouldn't mind them to sign Cook or Bennett so we don't have to go through growing pains and we can use a second rounder on a WR ,cb, or S.

If they are going to draft someone ,,,well I've said it a million times.

Wallace wants to come to Miami, MONEY is agreedto, his role is agreed but Wallace insist's on wearing #17 this year or no deal! Should and will Tannehill give it up?

Phins78,
I hear you. Sometimes it feels this blog was taken over by Jets fans.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | March 07, 2013 at 02:20 PM

VERY, VERY SENSIBLE POST, BUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

..Arturo..recognizing that Ertz is exactly a system tight end is how he should be evaluated. This isn't a knock on him. He is still the second rated tight end. But I would bet that he gets drafted by a team that uses the 2 tight end set. And not a team that is going to feature him as the singular TE..

How many teams in college ran the style of offense that Stanford did? 0 that I know of. They would run out of their base 2 tight ends, when they would get crazy they would run 3 tight ends. Closer to the Pats offense then anything else as far as use of the tight ends.

Don't get hung up on system this and it means the player is that. Some teams are going to see value in the player, other won't. Does he fit into your system, or does he not?

Posted by: Phins78 | March 07, 2013 at 02:23 PM

I actually belive that its FAR MORE important to make a HUGE UPGRADE at wr than te.

A DYNAMIC WR automatically upgrades the TE GAME. Dont confuse this with it makes Fasano better, it will make our TE GAME better.

However, if we're unable to land Wallace or Jennings. then its imminent to make a HUGE upgrade to the te position. We cant continue to go forward and have both positions stink.

..Anyone going in SFLA going to Doral this weekend?

DD,

Calling a guy a "system" player scares me. Isn't that the knock on Egnew? I want a freakin' football player. A smart guy that can read a defense, run a good route, catch a pass, and is tough. THAT kind of guy should be able to play in ANY system.

That's what we need. Maybe it's one of the guys mentioned, maybe not. But that's Ireland's task is to find THAT guy!

Posted by: Rob Cook | March 07, 2013 at 02:23 PM

I would do the hard sell to Wallace and give him "WARFIELD'S #42". Sell him he's our next "PAUL WARFIELD".

Charles Clay snt doing a damn thing with #42, and I'll bet evrytime Warfield sees Clay in the #42 jersey, he bows his head in shame.

"Mr. Wallace, Mr. Wafield's on line 42, will you take the call sir?"

rob, ross will unretire #13 4 wallace.
lol

Actually, Wallace in the #42 jersey would look like "shades of Paul Warfield". It should be an easy sell.

I would sell Wallace that he'll be the last Dolphin player that would ever wear that uniform. That should play right into the ego factor.

On Fasano.

332 yards
YAC 80
YRDS PER GAME 20.8
ONE CATCH OVER 20 YARDS
18 FIRST DOWNS
(Hartline accounted for 48 first downs and Bess-38)

And he had 5 tds which is nice on a loaded offense but considering the fact we had ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ELSE TO THROW TOO IN THE ENDZONE it's pathetic.

And our TE who is supposed to run the shorter first down routes only accounted for a little over one first down per game? He constantly pulls up before the sticks, doesn't seem to have a lot of awareness there.

He belongs at the #2 position, hard to argue that.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | March 07, 2013 at 02:33 PM

Amen. Let's draft football players and not combine athletes. I can bet that if we draft 10 guys with solid careers / production in school we'll have 6-7 solid pros who´ll still be playing for us within 6-7 years. As we draft the Egnews, Clays, Gates of the world just 'cause their fast we'll find ourselves having the same discussion every year around the 10 holes in our roster we still need to fill.

True at 2:30 YG. I want to add though that I think the two positions are mutual. A great TE opens up the outside for the wrs as much as a great wr opens up the middle for the te's. But yes, completely agree we need one of both, no matter where they come from.

I still don't see Wallace choosing us over the others though! Am I crazy here guys? Tell me why Wallace will choose our Phins, I'm not seeing it.

Egnew was actually a very good college TE in terms of the reciever factor. It was his blocking that was truly atrocious.

That's why I believe the problem with him right now his all 75% still not blocking to an acceptable nfl level, and 25% playbook related.

From what I witnessed on the college level, if he can get these two things down, he'll become quite a fine nfl te. Im sure these two things are his offseason priorities.

Im hoping Egnew makes all dolfans suck dick in 2013.

not crazy 78, sometin else tho.
lol

lol okay you don't need my email, how bout giving up those digits so we can make this happen!

db, i saw tape of eggnew in college,
he looked like a pos there too.
lol

Phin78,

I believe we can woe Wallace. Just have to use "ALL" of the city of Miami resourses. Ross, call up James/Wade and Pat Riley. Im sure they would be estactic to help.

Chances of landing Wallace decreases if Ross/Ireland are the only recruiting faces Wallaces sees. I have no confidence Ross/Ireland could sell sight to the blind.

You forgot 1. Putting your sausage into bloggers.

You can forward your email to heybigmouthknowitalljerkface@goFurself.com.

Gonna have to pass on the sausge though. Rumor has it you have old man sausage.

YG,
As a fan I'd wouldn't mind eating crow if it means having a solid TE in the team, but if a 3rd Rd TE couldn't even suit up to play special teams I doubt he'll turn the corner and learn how to play the game.

IT'S TRUE,

If it helps I would like you to know that I have sweet Italian, just fyi.

DD, but it's not the 40 time that made Eifert's combine, it was his unreal lower body strength, agility, and explosion he showed. His, vertical, broad jump, cone and shuttle results were very very good. Not only against this class but against the best TEs in the NFL. Pair that with good college production and a kid with his head screwed on straight and you have the makings of a solid first round pick.

Posted by: 2 watt | March 07, 2013 at 02:45 PM

Yes, in terms of his blocking. Was a very good reciever.

Fast forward to April 2014... Due to the dolphins allowing
many of their own free agents to leave and replacing them
primarily with free agents who had been cut, they will receive
two compensation picks in the third round and two in the fourth.

Grab as many decent players as you can when they are cut!
UFAs cost us picks, :)

Yeah, 41 is pretty old but it still works well. Just give me a chance bud and I'll rock your world. Are you hispanic? I'm a bean queen and would prefer it if you were. Just fyi

Arturo,

Teammates call him a puss because of because he seems afraid of blocking contact. Nothing recieving game. Thats why he was drafted 3rd rd.

Phonypony78,

Don't keep asking, makes you look desperate to go with your usual pathetic. Hit me up here:

heybigmouthknowitalljerkface@goFurself.com

Can't wait!

Can't disagree with Mark on that one. Eifert killed it during the combine and would be a great get.

I have nothing against the kid, awesome player. I just love Ertz's makeup.

Ahhhhhh man, you're no fun. That's a fake address damnit! I was hoping for some action. I'm glad you figured out I was gay and made me come out of the closet. Hoefully this will lead to a real love connection between us.
