« Dustin Keller: Dolphins over the Jets | Main | Brent Grimes visits the Dolphins »

Gibson is a Dolphin, raises Bess questions

Brandon Gibson will be a Miami Dolphins by the end of the day, a source is telling me. He has agreed to a three-year deal, according to the Herald's Adam Beasley.

Why?

Gibson had 51 catches for 691 yards and five touchdowns for the receiver-starved Rams last year. Obviously that team is going in a different direction as Danny Amendola went to New England and Gibson will end up in Miami.

But is Gibson, 26 in August, a fit?

Obviously the Dolphins believe so. He is not a speed receiver as Miami has been chasing. He is 6-foot and 205 pounds so he's not small.

This immediately raises the question how adding Gibson affects Davone Bess. Well, I am trying to get the answer to that.

At best, Bess is going to have some competition. So is Brian Hartline, by the way. But as the Dolphins have already shown this offseason, they are adding but also subtracting talent when the upgrade is made. Hartline is not going to be cut as he just signed a new deal with guaranteed money.

Consider Bess at risk until we hear otherwise.

Bess caught 61 passes for 778 yads in 13 games but finished the season on the injured reserve list.

What would fake GM Salguero do in this situation:

I keep Davone Bess for now. He only costs $2.6 million against the cap. He's well-liked in the locker room. I let him go to camp and compete and if he's one of the best three receivers he plays a lot. And if he's one of the best four, he's a great insurance policy.

And if he isn't any of the above I trade him for a sixth or seventh round pick.

By the way, Gibson no doubt impressed the Dolphis when they played the Rams last year. He caught seven passes for 91 yards and that was his second best game of the season. But perhaps he left a lasting impression based on the 22-yard catch on the video below:

Hope we keep bess, he is v good in the slot and that was without the calibre of we have

liked the start of free agency now this is beginning to get ridiculus.smells of a desperate gm in the last yr of a contract, oh wait Ireland is in the last yr of his. Keller over Eifert or Ertz? Looks like an OG warmack or cooper or CB rhodes with first pickeveryone whos happy we keep adding pass catchers, just remember, two things. dont make a good postion great when you can make a poor one good. wheres the pass rusher? wheres the corner and help on the right side of the line? and one more thing. dont cry later when hartline or wallace only have 65 cathces and say they didnt do enough for what there getting paid. the balls spread out too much to 5 guys now. get ELVIS!!!

Pats are overplaying their cards IMO. BB has gotten so full of himself he thinks he can put a deep fried turd in their system and it will taste good. Pats are outsmarting themselves this year. If the 2 TEs can't stay on the field most of the year for them and when its important they are... DONE SON.

steve he didnt pick keller over either of those guys, keller one year deal. they will prob still draft one of those 2 guys in 2nd rd. first pick so far has to be a corner since he wont go get grimes. hartline will by far catch more balls than wallace

Exactly why we had the dumbest corners in the nfl. Great corners always get their head around to locate the football.

Google some of the great cb's. Then google their highlights. I promise what you'll see they all have in common is that they consistently get their heads around to locate the football.

No offense, but if you didnt know this is a crucial trait of great corners. Im glad as hell you never pursued football and ended up playing corner for the dolphins too. LOL...

If Swope is still sitting there 3rd, he's a no brainer pick.

=======================================================

TOTALLY agree! And AFTER the COMBINE, a DEFINITE No Brainer!

Dusty
Patterson never missed a GAME due to injury until that injury. So I think that comment is a bit much. I think your opinion of him is poo poo. No offense.

Another mediocre possession wr to join the ranks of a team that has plenty of them already. 1 stretch the field target won't open up an offense for wrs who can't separate.

Gibson is a good route runner with good hands but lacks speed and quickness. Another questionable move when you could draft a guy like Patterson and have what the Falcons have. Two wrs that command a double team. That is what you call an explosive ...dynamic set of wrs that rank among the leagues best units.

We are still very average as a group at wr and scare no one lining up Gibson...Hartline...Wallace and BESS.. LOL Pray Ireland still have sense enough to draft a big ..fast target at wr by the end of the 2nd rd.

steve again, tired of bess"s 7 catches for 19 yd games, Swope is 6-0 205 faster playmaker and knows sherman and T-hill, so why get gibson? overkill this isnt fantasy football, cut bess (draft swope) cut carpenter add josh brown for half the price, cut patterson draft a cb and use that money to get ELVIS

"wheres the pass rusher?"

Mr. Ellerbe, would you like to come over here and meet Steve? Yes, Steve, he was asking where's our pass rusher, and -- oh, wait, Mr. Ellerbe, I think that's Steve you're standing on -- that squeaking sound from under your right cleat -- if you could just -- ah, you know what? Never mind.

Since we are adding weapons, watch out for the Eifert TE at 12, with Keller on a 1 year deal to mentor him maybe. 2 te sets are ok as well and he is supposed to b the best TE since Tony Gonzalez, plus our nick bunoconti loves the kid. ...With 5 of the top 100 and 6 in the top what 108, 1 TE, 1 OL, 4 Defenders, No need for Wr now for the top 6 pix...

not done, amendola is very good and llyod is solid. offense never the problem with them, they need to fix defense

Hydrshock,

I know absolutely nothing about Jonathan Cooper except he's supposed to be one of the better guard in this draft. I havent a clue of how this translates on the nfl level.

Im sure Jerry was probably rated one of the better og's in his draft. If we drafted og, I would feel more comfortable going Warmack or bust.

Wow...cut Bess? We have some real genius fans out there.

Bess converts third downs better than almost any receiver in the league. That is the role he plays...similar to Welker. He should be a Fin for sure.

Adding Wallace provides real big play ability for long yardage TD's. He also will open it up for Hartline and now Gibson and Keller to score in the red zone. Bess will make a few more TD's as well. I also like the idea of developing Binns and Mathews as your backup WR's. The squad is set for 2014.

Now we move on to CB, T, DE as the remaining needs. One in Free Agency and the rest in the Draft.

pg13 u mean marshall? whats that matter to that point, hasnt played since. guy isnt a starter to begin with.

I meant Marshall @ 5:55

yessss grimes in for visit! finally. i agree cut carp, brown is a giant though

Posted by: steve | March 15, 2013 at 05:51 PM

Where's the passruher? He's a guy that from Miami, he was just cut by the Broncos.

Ireland only needs to persuade him to come home and pay him.

ELVIS DUMMERVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carroll has always been a must go. ALWAYS. The teams tried to talk themselves into carroll for year but it was obvious he wasnt any good from day 1. Been the goat for a couple years in my opinion.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HEAD COACH BILL BELICHICK WOULD LIKE DAVONE BESS IF HE'S ON THE TRADE BLOCK. FILLING IN FOR WES WELKER WOULD BE LUXURY FOR QB TOM BRADY.

OK...Fans now it's time to stop the B.S. about Ireland. He added some solid talent the past 2 years post Parcells. He cut loose of Sparano. He added Philbin and the new coaching staff. He has put solid players in place. He created a great cap situation the past few years that enabled him to make the moves this offseason.

I'd like to see him cut Patterson and Marshall and add one or two other veteran CB's who have more proven records. If he cuts one or both in the next week I'd really think Ireland is on his A-Game.

He put us in position to get 5 picks in the first three rounds and are now in position to use them on 'best available talent.'

Now it's up to the coaches and players to win football games.

new article up and its great news

str8balla,

Did you bump your head? We already signed the best wr of this fa. Did you think we were getting Calvin Johnson on day 3?

Respect your opinion Dusty but I do disagree with it. I think Marshall will be the #1 CB going into the season. Of course I suppose a rook we draft could put him at #2. But I think Patterson and a draft CB will battle for # 2. Loser gets the slot. That's just my thoughts.

If we can trade bess we should consider it. If not keep him. We have the room and he is in the last year of his contract.

We forget that Fins have Moore and someone else as well. Get a 5th or 6th rounder for Bess. He had a better year than Amendola. Bess' negative is YPC, and YAC. He's another 8 yard guy.
That one catch of Gibson's is something we haven't seen from Bess. Trade him NOW for a backup O-Lineman, just not Columbo.

Wouldn't Swope be a "no brainer" if he takes one more concussion. His medical history might be a risk from what I've been told.

No offense, but if you didnt know this is a crucial trait of great corners. Im glad as hell you never pursued football and ended up playing corner for the dolphins too. LOL...

ROTFLMAO - Are you trying to pretend I didn't know this? C'Mon now, you've read my posts.

I've been Beatching about our corners failing to do this for 3 straight years. I even started wondering about our Coaching staff(Pre-Philbin).

Our corners NEVER got their heads around in time and SpoRano and Nolan seemed FINE with it-Unnnnngh!

Anywhoo.......I agree, Great Corners(and Safeties)just develop a knack for knowing when to get the Head Around.

Carroll, Smith and Davis NEVER "Got It".

Bottom's Up!!!!

Every time a Dolphin QB needed a first down they went to Bess. The Dolphins will carry 5-6 receivers Bess as got to be one.

Watch thevideo again. Not once did Carroll try to locate the football. That's worrisome with your db's in coverage.

Had Carroll tried to locate the ball, there would have been a good chance for at least a pass defensed.

None of this matters, as the Fins have NO ONE who could have MADE THAT CATCH regardless. He's Brandon Marshall type, but WILL catches in the end zone.

Look look the Pats gettin scared. All of a sudden they kickin tires on every camry in the country. If u not happy u not a Dolfan. Period. I cant believe this is happening. Want dumervil want grimes defense defense defense!

Can't really judge the talent of a receiver when going against our CB'S and Safeties..... lol Or at least the ones we had. Can't even remember when we had a shut down CB and safety. They've all been turds, floaters, sinkers, and stinkers.

I still want Patterson with the first pick.

You can never have enough weapons.

I already know.

It's not happen

Fork you.

**POST OF THE DAY**
====================

Never mind.

Posted by: Anderson | March 15, 2013 at 05:55 PM

And yeah Freeney is a camry. I hope the patsies sign him. Couldnt buy better protection for Tannehill than that!!!!

If the Fins somehow got Dumervil, this would, ON PAPER, have to be the GREATEST FA season in Fin history. The handling of our draft still has me a bit worried.
A no brainer, like Pouncey, would be Warmack, but that's high (they say) for a guard. Be may be one of the 2 best players in the top 12, along with Milner?

I still am thinking Tavon Austin will be the pick at 12 and once that happens then someone then may be released.

@AdamHBeasley: Dolphins visit today: Cornerback Brent Grimes. Boom."
There we go!!

Ireland still hasn't f#cked up. Adding a pass catching TE & another WR that can score TD's. Here comes GB's West Coast offense minus Aaron Rodgers.

Still chasing f#cking Long though...

Then in round 2 pick 42 we grab Robert Alford or Arms ted of.

We may be overlooking the fact that an injury to Lamar Miller could kill our season, as Thomas has been an injury machine. Are there any good RB's in the 3rd-4th rd?
Can't say we'd be as lucky..or good as Houston to get a Foster undrafted. Denver found them for years in the late rounds.

What are you guys nuts! Bess now becomes as good as Welker is with or was with the Pats. Now with Wallace those safties can't sit on the short routes, plus Hartline is now in the 2 hole meaning he's not the primary. Just Wallace on the field will make Bess amazing. Bess will lead are team in receptions. Remember Welker was just avg with us, now that avg Bess will be a am ALL AFC player. By the way Gibson becomes our James Jones

Anyone who thinks Miami is better without Bess or is worth only a 6th or 7th rounder is a COMPLETE TOOL!

This is unreal. Last year we were begging for people to come here.

This year, Hey Miami is cool. Miami pays. Ireland ain't a bad guy. And that Ross is a card. And they are getting a new stadium. Philbin knows how to coach. They have a great team. Deshawna Smith is gone. That one opened all the doors.

Posted by: jpao | March 15, 2013 at 05:57 PM

----------
If what you say is true, this is all going to fall on Sherman. If Tanny doesn't get 25 TD's (average in the NFL) due to horrible. strange play calls, not due to Tanny's throwing, Philbin will have to get younger at OC.
If, however tanny flunks the test, then you STILL fire Sherman, as it was most likely HIS input that prompted Ireland to go for Tanny. That, and the outcry of Fans.

Gone...check this out

Wallace had help in Pittsburg with other speed guys who could catch underneath or get over the top and make chunk yardage plays.

Wallace has never had to be the man and carry a wr core. The pressure of being that guy along with having no real speed outside of Wallace won't magically turn the Fins in to a team with a prolific passing game.

Bottom line...draft Patterson or Austin with the 1st selection. Gibson is black Hartline. Possession target who doesn't get rac or get on top of coverage.

'Now we move on to CB, T, DE as the remaining needs. One in Free Agency and the rest in the Draft.'

Jpao,

Unless we're signing guys players like Garner for one year deals, I think Ireland has done enough in FA. The cap hit from signing Hartline, Wallace, Ellerbe, Moore, & Wheeler is going to be well over $40 Million. So lets not try to what the Jets & Eagles did.

ELVIS DUMERVIL WHOSE A LOCAL MIAMI NATIVE OF MIAMI JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AT A REASONABLE PRICE WOULD BE GREAT. I CONSIDERED PLAYING FOR THAT HIGH SCHOOL GOING INTO MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL. I WAS A HELLUVA SHUTDOWN CB. TECHNICAL DEFENSIVE BACK WHO ALWAYS HAD THE PROPER TECHNIQUE WITH MY HEAD TURNED AROUND SO THAT THE WR AND WR WAS ALWAYS IN MY SIGHT. HIPS SQUARED PROPERLY, ADJUSTMENTS MADE ONLY BY THE HIPS AND SHOULDERS. I WOULD MAKE A GREAT DEFENSIVE BACK COACH FOR THE DOLPHINS.

Regardless of whether safties are sitting over top of routes or not the wrs still lack the ability to consistently beat coverage. No one was doubling hartline last yr. IF any thing team brought a safety into the box after the 4th game on the season and the running gm stalled. No respect for Bess...Hartline or Gibson's ability to beat one on one coverage on underneath or vertical routes. Wr help still needed.

I don't expect any more FA signings by Miami until Jake Long makes his decision

NO Do not cut Bess, he has the best hands since slow footed Orande gadsden and seems like a good guy.

Should never have signed Gibson and took a more complete wr high in the draft. Now you can count on Ireland feeling for some reason that we have a vaunted wr core and going CB....DE....DE...OT...CB....OG....LB....FS....OT....TE...in the upcoming draft.

Until Cal Johnson, ask the Lions how profitable it was to draft WQR 3 times in the 1st round.
Whomever we get, especially a guy like Patterson, with 1 year of college ball, may not help us for 2 years. Fans don't want to wait. The future is NOW, as evidenced by the FA signings.
I'd get a guy who will be here for the next 3-4 years on the O-line or D-line..or CB. Someone who can start NOW.
I am often leery of "workout warriors", like Austin., no matter their speed. Gates, anyone?

Sorry, meant Wide Receiver.

DON'T TRADE BESS TO NEW ENGLAND !

The Dolphins would be stupid if they cut Bess. If they did, he would land with the Patriots, like Welker, just to hurt us twice a year. Moreover, he's been one of the most consistent players in last 4 years.

All the players get injured one way or the other. It's like if the Redskins tried to cut RGIII now. But as usual, Salguero always comes with nonesense.

I LIKE THE SIGNINGS SO FAR BUT DO NOT GET RID OF BESS! PERIOD! WHY? WE HAVE 3 NEW RECEIVERS WHO HAVE TO LEARN THE SYSTEM FIRST AS WELL AS GETTING ACCUSTOM TO TANNEHILL, YOU NEED MORE THAN ONE RECEIVER WHO IS DEPENDABLE BESIDES HARTLINE! THIS IS BESS CONTRACT YEAR AND SEE HOW HE PERFORMS AND I ALSO DRAFT HIS REPLACEMENT IN AUSTIN(IF AVAILABLE) OR SWOPE! ALSO STILL NEED ANOTHER SPEED RECEIVER IN THE EVENT WALLACE IS OUT A GAME OR TWO! THE RECEIVERS WE HAVE OTHER THAN WALLACE PUTS THE DOLPHINS BACK IN THE SAME BOAT! NO DOWN FIELD THREAT! MUST DRAFT A SPEED RECEIVER! THE BACKUPS ARE GARBAGE AND DEPENDING ON THEM TO ALL OF A SUDDEN BECOME GOOD IS BULL! PLEASE STOP THIS TEXAS AM FAMILY REUNION! I LIKE SWOPE BUT I LIKE AUSTIN OR PATTERSON BETTER, OR HOPKINS. BOTTOM LINE DO NOT GET RID OF BESS AND ADD SOME SPEED ALSO! FINALLY! DUMERVILLE HAS FELL IN THE DOLPHINS LAP AND INSTEAD OF WAITING ON LONG GET STRONG AND ADD A PASS RUSHER WHO CAN HELP WAKE AND SIGN TALIB FROM NE IF STILL AVAILABLE! NOW YOU HAVE MADE THE PATS WEAKER!

Please don't cut Bess! NE will pick him up and he will haunt us like Welker did for years. Keep him or trade him.

Rah! Rah! Rah!
Wait until everyone wakes up and remembers Mike Sherman is our OC and was fired in Green Bay and fired again at Texas A&M. Some how Sherman will screw all this up. Sherman couldn't coordinate paper plates, plastic spoons, and forks.

I'm not getting excited about anything until I see them on the field... and until I did I'd be holding on to Bess.

Wow .. talk about keeping the ball rollin' ... Jeff Ireland and coach Philbin been gettin' it done. If we could make sure ELVIS doesn't leave the building, and sign LONG to a short contract looks like we will be drafting C/b in the draft which the draft is filled with great C/b and D/e ...and maybe draft a R/b and O/L. The A.F.C. east title should be in miami next year ... I'm excited! everyone go get your season tickets cause this is going to be a DO-SEE !
GO DOLPHINS!
