Ireland happy, cap in good shape, more moves coming

Jeff Ireland landed the one that could not get away. He landed Mike Wallace.

So how does the Dolphins general manager feel about that?

He's pleased.

"We are pleased to reach an agreement with Mike Wallace," Ireland said in a statement. "He has a unique skill set which we believe will be a welcomed addition to our offense. We are looking forward to his contributions to the team."

The Dolphins just announced the Wallace signing because it took a while to hammer out some final language on the deal and get it approved by the league. The team also had to wait for Wallace to take a physical.

The Dolphins also made official the one-year contract for safety Chris Clemons. The club did not make official the signing of Phillip Wheeler as he was flying across country to South Florida this evening or Dannell Ellerbe, who also was flying into town.

"We are also happy to announce an extension with Chris," Ireland added. "He has been a valuable contributor to the team the last four years, and we are glad he will remain a member of the Miami Dolphins."

Valuable but not invaluable. The Dolphins have shown that they're willing to stick with Clemons as the short-term answer at safety. But they are not ready to make a multi-year commitment. He needs to play better for that.

Meanwhile, all the day's activity will leave the Dolphins with approximately $20 million in salary cap space. That is not all available.

The team will budget approximately $6 million for the draft, another $3.2 million for the practice squad and another $2 million for emergency moves during the season. Obviously this is an in-season budget and not the Top 51 cap figure.

The Dolphins can create cap space by cutting players -- as they did today with Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett.

(Example: In replacing Burnett with Phillip Wheeler, the club saved $800,000 in cap space. That is, Burnett's cap savings of $3.2 million (including $2.5 million of dead money) minus the $2.4 million cap charge Wheeler will carry this year.)

Possible future cap casualties include Dimitri Patterson ($4.6 million savings), Richard Marshall ($4.6 million savings), Davone Bess ($2.6 million savings) and Dan Carpenter ($2.6 million savings).

I'm not saying the Dolphins will release those players for cap reasons tomorrow. I am saying they are all candidates to be cut if they do not perform or the team needs cap room. They should all tread lightly.

Glad Ireland finally looks like he knows what he is doing. What a difference a year makes.

What did I tell you! 6 + 3.2 + 2 = 11.2 million. I said 10 mil and it is actually more. Polian and Parcells were indeed correct...and I was wise to respect their opinion over some immature blogger.

Good moves by Ireland today. Can't wait to see what else he has planned for the rest of Free Agency. Still have big holes to fill, especially at Corner and TE.

Phoenix has disappeared since I busted him and owned him. Just as well for all of us.

Phoenix is reading this of course, but too much of a panzy to admit he was wrong, dead wrong. That's ok. Let him be.

I'm very pleased with our moves so far! It would be nice to get a RT or CB in FA so we can go BPA in the draft and take more chances.

Hopefully he can get Jones signed to a long term contract and lock him up.

Armando, is it true that Philbin wanted Jennings and Ireland wanted Wallace?

'I'm very pleased with our moves so far! It would be nice to get a RT or CB in FA so we can go BPA in the draft and take more chances.'

Woodshed,

No doubt & we still have about $8.5 Million in cap space to spend in FA. We're FINALLY getting rid of the dead wood on this team & with ten draft picks I like where this team is headed.

It is too soon to judge anything. My gut feeling says Ireland did a good job of improving our LB's while reducing the cost. Kudos. Yet there is still work to be done. We do not have one single legitimate TE and CB is too thin. S, LT or RT are also a concern. The draft is always a crapshoot.

Ireland for president!

He has had some questionable picks in the past but I always prefer to focus on the now and future.

I think its hard to say that his moves so far this offseason have been anything other than solid.

Still have $9mill in space so a solid te or Cb or de or t or we or rb is still possible. Good job so far!

There's probably 20 CB's available on the market right now that are better than Patterson, and he's making more than Devon Bess? See ya

Ireland Still Wants To Sign More Players. GREAT!!!

Bess is clearly the odd receiver out and I expect that he'll be traded to a WR poor team before the season starts.

Jpao,

Agreed. First time I felt good about what is going on with this team.

According to Adam Schefter, yes. But I gotta agree with Ireland on this one. Plenty of Jennings like Receivers in the draft.

Obviously this is an in-season budget and not the Top 51 cap figure.

-------------------------------------------------------

Agreed.

The Only Thing That Matters Is The Top 51 Players.

The Rookie Pool Is For The Draft. Not All Players Drafted Make The Top 51.

The Rookie Pool And Practice Squad Players Are Only Deducted Now. So No Team Goes Over The Cap After The Draft.

But Come Week 1!!

The Only Contracts That Matter Are The Top 51!!

No Cook = Epic Fail.

No DBs or LT = Epic Fail.

Really, you folks have got to get a grip..........today was a bad day..........plus now it seems Philbin wanted Jennings....so we have dissension in the FO.

The Debacle continues.

The top 51 players? Isn't the active roster 53? 51 is basically everyone.

Jennings? I don't believe it. Not the same player anymore. Age, injuries, he is on the downside of his NFL career and already well into his acting career.

Tomorrow and Free Agency Will Be A Success If Ireland Can Sign 2 LEGIT CB's!!! To Replace RM and DP!!

On Releasing Bess?

Only If We Sign Welker for Less.

Carpenter Is Most Likely Gone. Didn't The Fins Bring Back Nate Kaeding? For Half The Price.

WELKER! WELKER! WELKER!

excited about the moves, but the front seven was our strength. hopefully JI has a plans for the secondary.

go dolphins!

Jennings is still available for a reason. He is a plan B receiver at this stage.

Working hard, Mr. Mando. Thanks for the updates with all the facts - Keep keeping us posted. Good job!

good picks so far i know we have a lot of draft picks yet to come like the lb picks got just as good lbs and saved money and younger. love to see dolphins get patterson or ansah from byu plenty of cbs later in draft. dont think miller answer for running back though get mendenhall or lee lacy in draft

Watz up with gettin Finley from GB???

I believe Bess won't get cut he's the slot receiver he becomes better with Wallace clearing out the middle and his cap number is only 2.6 million. Patterson and Marshall are the most likely candidates to be let go.
I can see the Dolphins drafting a CB in the first round of the upcoming draft and they have options in FA
with Winfield from Minnesota and Williams from Baltimore out there.

Senso,

Teams Carry 53 Players. But Only The Top 51 Contracts Count Against The Cap. And Only 47 Are Active On Gameday.

All This Rookie Cap And Other Stuff, Is Just Fluff Until Week 1. When Teams Have To Set Their Roster.

Why would Bess be the odd man out... Wallace #1, Hartline #2 (possession), Bess #3 (Slot)...

Too bad we didn't get Cook - but amazing job so far by Ireland. We got faster, younger, and amazingly cheaper at LB today. Burnett and Dansby were good solid tacklers, but were a big part of the reason we kept getting burned over and over by 1st and 2nd tier TE's in the league... Big upgrade to the defense as a whole.

Need to figure out the CB position still. There will be plenty of RT's in FA and the draft to plug in... CB, S, TE are the next targets... Hope we try to plug them in FA so we can go get the best players available in the draft without worrying about needs.

Farid Sultana is a debacle.

yo armando darrius heyward-bey was just cut by the raiders how about the dolphins making a run after him or wes welker to go even a step further and make our WR CORE JUST THAT MUCH MORE DANGEROUS! adding heywardbey would make us have 2 burners at WR or adding welker would give us 2 dangerous slot guys in bess, and welker! i think if we could go out there and sign welker or heywardbey it would make us have the ebst wr crew in the NFL! because wallace and hartline is a 1000+ tandem waiting to happen and if u add welker to the mix i could see us having 3 1,000 yard reciever for the 1st time in dolphins franchise history! and even posiably 4 wrs with a 1,000 yards with bess added in there! if we lined up in a 4 wide every passing down we could see 4 guysa with a 1,000 yards and maybe even have tannerhill to be the 1st QB to throw for over 5,000 yards since dan marino and maybe even break his 5,084 yards in a season if he is givin the chance to throw the ball 60% of the time i could see tannerhill throing for the record and getting 5500+ yards if we had the wide reicver crew of wallace, hartline, welker, and bess! what u think?

Time to watch sportcenter analysts jump on dolphins d ck

I'm Sorry But I don't Believe that Philbin Wanted Jennings.

Adam Schfter Also said Philbin wanted M.Flynn.

Philbin Was Probably just Being Politically Correct. He Didn't Want To Hurt Jennings Feelings.

I've Heard More "Serious" Rumors About Welker To Miami!! Than Jennings To Miami!!

With a potential cap savings of $4.6 Million, it would appear that replacing Patterson with a starting caliber CB in FA makes the most sense.

If that happens then we can focus on finding a starting RT, a starting TE, & another starting CB in the draft. After that adding another RB & another WR makes a lot of sense.

Miami has done a great job to this point. Now there next move should be to aquire either TE - Dustin Keller (since he's the only seam threat TE available in free agency) OR RT - Eric Winston (The best zone blocking OT left on the market).

Ok maybe after they jump on heat d ck lol

mia73:

That was a very hurtful thing to say.

Come on folks stop moaning and be happy. Fins landed top free agent and now upgraded the lb Corp. Stuck with younger talent and told older free agents its our price or bye bye.

With $9mill in hfrrand we can still land two solid free agent starters. Ireland may cut more players to ugrade further. I hope he keeps Bess because he makes THILL better and is a 3rd down demon. But we have to be reasonable....not all needs will be filled in free agency.

With five picks in top three rounds we will fill the rest of the holes.

YES! YES! YES! I HAVE WAITED OVER A YEAR AND ON PRACTICALLY EVERY COMMENT ON THIS BLOG I HAVE CAMPAIGNED TO GET MIKE WALLACE! NOW FINALLY I HAVE HEARD THE WORDS"THE DOLPHINS HAVE SIGNED MIKE WALLACE". TO EVERY TRUE DOLPHIN FAN I AM GOING ON RECORD RIGHT NOW THAT BARRING ANY MAJOR INJURIES THIS TEAM WINS 10/11 GAMES. THE ONLY THING MISSING NOW IS GOOD CB AND GOOD TE. IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A BIGGER DIFFERENCE IN THE DIVISION SIGN TALIB FROM NE!! IF NOT HIM GO GET HOUSTON FROM DETROIT! ALSO WE WILL GET VERY LUCKY IF SOMEONE ELSE SIGNS WELKER! IF NE LOSES BOTH IT WILL BE VERY HARD TO REPLACE AND LOSING TALIB WILL CREATE MATCHUP PROBLEMS FOR THEM AGAINST THE DOLPHINS! AS OF NOW IRELAND HAS UPGRADED THIS TEAM TO THE POINT THAT IF WE HAVE A GOOD DRAFT THAT PRODUCES 2 GOOD STARTERS WE CAN AND WILL CHALLENGE FOR THE AFC EAST!! GO DOLPHINS!! SO FAR JEFFY DOING A GREAT JOB TO THE POINT WHERE I'M ABOUT TO STOP CALLING HIM JEFFY! BUT NOT YET!

paying up for it but adding younger talent, all good.....I think you can book the cap savings for Carpenter as I cant imagine he'll stick at that money--use a late round pick on one of those young stud kickers and save a bunch

@11:11. Agreed.

Having 4 Legit Wr's. Will Be A Problem For Any Defense.

Which Team Has 4 CB's To Cover Those 4 Wr's?

I'm Sorry But I don't Believe that Philbin Wanted Jennings.

Dashi,

We'll never know but I believe that Wallace helps us more than Jennings. Philbin knows Jennings & maybe he speaks highly of him but at the end of the day Wallace is still a true burner with sub 4.3 speed & three years younger.

Benz,

The Fins Brought In N.Kaeding When Carp Went Down.

Kaeding Is One Of The Most Accurate Kickers In NFL History.

Ireland later reported that Wallace's momma was not a hookah.

So we concentrated on Defense tonight. is Jennings or welker the next? Cut Bess and Carp and boom!!

Dashe will you caress my noodle once more?

Philbin definitely wanted Flynn. Cheapskate Ross was too cheap to pay Flynn.

Come on folks stop moaning and be happy. Fins landed top free agent and now upgraded the lb Corp. Stuck with younger talent and told older free agents its our price or bye bye.

Jpao,

I'll say this--I have no idea how many wins these signings will translate to wins this year BUT I have a new found respect for Ireland. He's in the last year of his contract & if it doesn't work out this season AT LEAST he went out swinging.

I like every single move so far & he did the right thing by not chasing Long, Smith, & Bush. It was high time to cut bait on these guys.

Yeah that 7th round weak armed Flynn, tearing up the bench and the clipboard!

Yeah and Flynn would have been maybe second or third string. Flynn was not desired by Philbin. Tanne brings us into the next level.

IMO Dustin Keller should be a main priority for us. The draft is loaded with good CB's & OT's to replace Jake Long & Sean Smith. Keller could be had for about 6 mil per year & we still have at least 11 million left in cap space (And that's without cutting anyone else for more cap savings).

Flynn is going to be staring at Russels behind forever. Moore > Flynn

Keller sucks. Seriously. He's a nobody. He only looked good against our lame defense.

Be Happy? How many games have we won? Way too many dissapointments to be happy about anything that isnt a W. Moral victories or trying hard dont work anymore.

When the time comes miami will still have to be aggressive offensively. Wallace doesnt work unless the d thinks we might actually throw to him.

Matt Flynn would've had this team deep in the playoffs last season. He is better then Tannehill and would've also freed up the draft pick for a WR or TE.
