Ireland happy, cap in good shape, more moves coming

Jeff Ireland landed the one that could not get away. He landed Mike Wallace.

So how does the Dolphins general manager feel about that?

He's pleased.

"We are pleased to reach an agreement with Mike Wallace," Ireland said in a statement. "He has a unique skill set which we believe will be a welcomed addition to our offense. We are looking forward to his contributions to the team."

The Dolphins just announced the Wallace signing because it took a while to hammer out some final language on the deal and get it approved by the league. The team also had to wait for Wallace to take a physical.

The Dolphins also made official the one-year contract for safety Chris Clemons. The club did not make official the signing of Phillip Wheeler as he was flying across country to South Florida this evening or Dannell Ellerbe, who also was flying into town.

"We are also happy to announce an extension with Chris," Ireland added. "He has been a valuable contributor to the team the last four years, and we are glad he will remain a member of the Miami Dolphins."

Valuable but not invaluable. The Dolphins have shown that they're willing to stick with Clemons as the short-term answer at safety. But they are not ready to make a multi-year commitment. He needs to play better for that.

Meanwhile, all the day's activity will leave the Dolphins with approximately $20 million in salary cap space. That is not all available.

The team will budget approximately $6 million for the draft, another $3.2 million for the practice squad and another $2 million for emergency moves during the season. Obviously this is an in-season budget and not the Top 51 cap figure.

The Dolphins can create cap space by cutting players -- as they did today with Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett.

(Example: In replacing Burnett with Phillip Wheeler, the club saved $800,000 in cap space. That is, Burnett's cap savings of $3.2 million (including $2.5 million of dead money) minus the $2.4 million cap charge Wheeler will carry this year.)

Possible future cap casualties include Dimitri Patterson ($4.6 million savings), Richard Marshall ($4.6 million savings), Davone Bess ($2.6 million savings) and Dan Carpenter ($2.6 million savings).

I'm not saying the Dolphins will release those players for cap reasons tomorrow. I am saying they are all candidates to be cut if they do not perform or the team needs cap room. They should all tread lightly.

NFL.com reports free agent LT Jake Long's chances of signing with the Rams "hinge" on his physical.
"Long will take his physical Wednesday. If the results are good, there's a good chance he'll sign on the spot. Long lost a potential suitor when the Bears signed Jermon Bushrod, leaving St. Louis and Miami as his two most realistic landing spots. He'll be in big trouble if the Rams' doctors don't like what they find."

That torn triceps injury that put him on IR may not appeal to anyone.

LOL Dansby got us to the promised land, as did bush and long. WOOO great job. Matt flynn cannot start on the Seahawks, he earns LESS than ryan!! HA. Jets will win AFC. They have a qb (no 5 qb's!)

Oh but wait Flynn got beat out by a third round rookie named wilson, who was stuffed by the fins. Goo Flynn. LOL

Have to be thrilled with these moves. Would love D. Keller or B. Gibson. Gibson had a monster game against Miami last year. He is a player.

Well done so far Jeffrey Ireland!!!!!!!!

Wallace Replaces Reggie Bush As The Fins Best Playmaker. And TD Machine.

Let's See What L.Miller Can Do. If He Gains 1000yds This Season. He Already Ties Bush For 1000yd Season For His Career. And L.Miller Is Only 21 Years Old. 22, When The Season Starts.

Dashi Can't Stand M&M, But Even M.Moore Is A Better QB Than M.Flynn. By a W I D E Margin.

T-Hill Can Throw Farther With His Left!! Than Flynn With His Right!!

Flynn is so good that he is a backup in a league starving for starters at QB.

Bye Long take your 8 million... 40 plus years as a phins fan. I like the direction. Jets no team or qb, Bills almost as bad as the Jests. Pats will not be dominant. I live in NE they wanted 3 players: Wallce,Welker and taib/Smith. We shall see. gronk and hernandez get injured a lot.

Seattle has 2 QB's better then anything on our roster.

How is bess the odd man out?? He's our 3rd and he's our slot guy.

We have a younger and faster LB unit with young guys behind them. We have a nice top 3 WR group, we already have a quality Dline rotation. Our starting safeties are pretty good, Clemmons is decent and jones is burgeoning on great. We need corners bad, we need TEs bad, we need Oline and could use RB depth.

As far as Ireland goes I liked his last two drafts but his FA grabs have been below average. This FA Class is looking top notch! I hope this draft is ever better. His FA work gives a lot more flexibility.

Have not pin before wode recever of M0iami Dolphin? 14 or 15 time I think. now put before many horse of different strope for to get more player of tomorrow!

Your roster hamel? Wow you are the true meaning of a fan. As I assume u r a jets fan(cause your are not rooting for the fins) My alive and passed away grandmother have better arms then the jests. But ok the hawks rule. Cept their starting qb is 0-1 vs MY team. And our coach hated their backup. He trusts tanne. After his knee healed he proved his mobility, and obviously his arm was a bit better than your hawks boys. Flynn rules!!! haha

Cut Patterson, Marshall, carpenter & Bess if need be. Sign Grimes & DRC or Grimes/DRC (whichever they think is better fit for system) and either Long or Winston. That would be a monster FA class imo. Then draft a corner in draft(Rhodes, trufant, etc) and get a TE (Eiffert, Ertz or Escobar) and WR (K.Allen, Woods, Hopkins, Swope) and a DE (carradine, okafor, etc) and a G/T depending on what we do with Long/Winston (J. Pugh or B.Jones would fill in nicely somewhere) with our 5 picks in first 3 rnds n call it a day. Legit playoff chances this year. Draft Marcus Lattimore with one of our 4's and i start rockin the Gingerland t-shirts with Ireland's face on it! Do yo dance Jeffrey, do yo dance!

Jaison-
Bess is out if cap room needed for one move offensive move. D front 7 is solid ned a CB and maybe another slot guy......

People.. this says it all... Please dont do drugs

If Tannehill doesnt show drastic improvement the first half of next season they'll try him at WR or trade him.

Ireland Signs 2 Legit CB's.

LMFAO! Marvelous Marvin, have not pinned crack pipe to yo lipps so often!

Good times ahead

Hopefully Mike. Long time coming! Cant wait to see those Tanny to Wallace BOMBS, ala Marino to Duper! Good times then 4sure. All we can do is hope 4 the best. Like todays moves thusfar. Still work to do but overall we cant complain tonight.

Hopefully The Standard For LB Play Has Been Elevated Again.

The Reason Dashi Was Never Happy With K.Dansby. I Know What A MLB is Suppose To Look Like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTQOPcJWC4A

Why are so many of you dumping on Bess? He has the best hands of any WR on our team and he plays the slot like nobody's business--and for peanuts (at least compared to Wallace). It would be stupid to let him go now to gain a couple million, especially now that there will actually be a slot for him to run in. Glad you fools aren't our GM.

Let Bess go and move Rishard Matthews to the slot. Draft Xavier Rhodes with the 1st pick.

I think Asomaugh needs a change if scenery. Ireland needs to jump on him quick. It was only a couple years ago he was considered the best CB. C'mon Ireland

I like the moves. Our receiving corps are solid. Add a burner or another slot receiver (seller or thru draft or both). Our 5 wide set would be AMAZING. THIS is what the west coast offense is all about. Lamar and Dthomas for thunder and lightning. I think that philbin is thinking he has tons of options. And if tannehill can't deliver, Matt Moore on this 5 wideout set with 2 killer slot receivers would march the team all day long.

I'm pumped.

Harmel gets off on angry reactions to his stupid comments. What a pathetic pos

Not down on Bess, feel he's our little darker version of Wes Welker. Love to be able to keep him and if a real seam threat TE is added, Bess would do serios damage underneath! But if releasing Bess, carpenter, patterson n marshall can get me Grimes & DRC or Nnamdi & DRC/Houston or a corner AND Jake Long or Eric Winston.............bye, bye Bess!

Harmel is a lonely loser who is no dolphins fan. Probably doesnt even watch football. Just loves to see if he can get people going. He doesnt even believe what he says. He comes up with opinions that he knows will go completely against the grain and then sits back stroking at the sheer excitement of getting a reaction. This post just helped him to completion.

Bess isn't going anywhere. We have too many other pressing needs of starter-type positions than to go gaga over a premium slot receiver and 5-wide sets.

Bess costs a measly 400k more than Marshall. Add in the fact he's giving value to the special teams as a Punt return man and cutting him then requires you find another... it ends up costing you more. Bush is gone, Miller is NOT going to be returning kicks. That means Thigpen on KOs and Bess still on punts.

You can probably kiss Carp and Patterson goodbye. They'll either be gone for possibly more FAs or simply gone for cheaper and just as effective alternatives.

I also have this nagging feeling that there's a trade or surprise cut lingering. Vernon and Wake on the ends, Starks and Soliai in the middle. McDaniel and Randell as depth... plenty of picks to add more. Odrick's name has been tossed out there before. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see something occur involving him.

To G.B. With a pick if needed (4th rounder on), GIMME FINLEY!

How come nobody is talking about RB? I like Lamar Miller a lot but he's not really proven. I wouldn't mind adding an aging Jackson or the beast from the Giants if either can stay healthy.

I'm guessing our first pick in the draft is going to be an OL if Long leaves. I don't see us taking a WR until the 2nd or 3rd round as we have had nothing but bad luck drafting WR's.

The other spot that I'm concerned about is corner but if you look there is soo many out there you can almost wait and take the cheaper ones and then draft one in the 2nd round.

As far as WR goes, I'm not big on Hartline at all. And Bess is a great possesion guy but he can't break a tackle for anything. I wouldn't mind seeing a Welker fill in :)

We should sign Michael Turner. If they would have kept giving him the ball in the 4th qtr, Atlanta probably would have been in the Super Bowl.

Bess is widely regarded as one of the best slot receivers in the game. You guys should actually pay attention sometimes. What a load of crybabies and pessimists that CLAIM to be dolphin fans. You don't dump a guy that is one of the elite at his position who plays it for well below value. Maybe trade him so we don't have to pay the man, but release? That's just nuts. DC$ could be out just because he is a kicker and you can get another. We have to use our draft picks on something... you know, those 5 in the top 100 picks. Some nice looking corners in the draft, and OL.. easy, if we actually needed another starting OT, which we do not. Who missed Long when he was out the end of last season? Half the south FL fans probably didn't even realize he wasn't playing. And Lamar Miller is going to be pretty freaking special. All in all, this team is doing it right. To all you haters on Ireland talking about how bad he has done before, he has been setting the team up, you fools. It takes years to get contracts under control, get out from under dead money and rebuild through the draft. You don't fill all your holes in FA and you don't build a team that way either. I feel dumber every time I read the nonsense half the morons here post. I think the sun gets to people living too far south.

Davon Bess has been rated the worst punt returner in the league the last 2 years. Makes no sense for Lamar Miller not to be returning. He was dynamic against Ohio State.

Bess is a touch and go. Great hands, quick routes but no real YAC. Still, you need a replacement for him. Dolphins get their mitts on Steadman Bailey in the Draft, Davone is gone.

Lots of new Toys today with still $ to buy more. Happy, happy

Do you realize that we will practically have a new Team?

Do we have any money left for Gholdston? He's visiting the Bucs today.
Or Adib Calib.

Xavier Rhodes

Without announcing it or admitting too it, Ross/Ireland and Philbin are sticking to their Full Blown Rebuild!

Ireland regrouped and set himself up perfectly for this Off Season. He's still slashing big salaries and Problem Children(From Marshall, Ocho-Stinko and Davis to Dansby and Burnett). He's going for youth, speed and a sprinkle of Veterans.

So far I'm Shocked and in Awe! Ireland's doing better than even Craig and I predicted.

AwwwwwwwwwwwRiiiiiiiiight MIAMI!!!!

great job so far in free agency....Mr. Ireland
now go get Keller,Talib,Winston or Volmer, and Gibson.
Draft-1st round-Warmack
2nd round-Xavier Rhodes
2nd-bpa
3rd-safety from F.I.U.
3rd-cb from U.of Miami

that's the best move we make in the last 5 years I tought we really needed to upgrade at safety going after goldson would have been a great idea we need to pick up atleast one more corner in free agency

Fasano walked and there's just no sure things in the draft. So read the writing on the wall. Ireland **HAS** to address the Tight End position with Free Agency. We have no starters on the roster and the top two(or 3, or 4, etc, etc...) in the draft are no sure things either.

I think it's obvious that he'll try and draft a Tight End high in the draft. But with Egnew(and the other "Has Beens")as the only Tight End(s) under contract, **WE HAVE TO FIND** a legitimate starter **IN FREE AGENCY**

The writing on the wall says it's Dustin Keller as the reasonably priced - "Stop-Gap Instant Starter" - insurance policy.

When you look at Keller "Objectively", He's Fasano 2.0. He's big enough and experienced enough to get down and dirty blocking up front. He also has great hands. The big difference is that Keller can motor COMPARED to Fasano. Keller can get separation and he has enough speed to challenge Linebackers and Safties down the seam.

It might not be Keller, but at this point, I don't see any other alternatives. You bet I'm hoping we get one of the top Tight Ends in this years draft. But realistically speaking, none of them give any indications of being able to handle starting Day 1.

As uninspiring as Fasano has been, I say Ireland "Hamstrung Himself" by letting him get away. I predict he'll be forced to do one of two things.

The obvious: Sign one of the Free Agents.

His second option is more intriquing: Trade for a Tight End. Maybe a guy he has some inside knowledge of..........?

Either way, I GUARANTEE YOU that Ireland will be forced to address the position prior to the draft.
==================================================

There! I've said my peace! Other than THAT:

A **ValHalla** to you Jeffy Ireland! You've earned one TODAY!!!!

Strong Thunder,

If we could get Vollmer or Winston and Warmack in the draft........?

OMG! Who cares what happens with Jake Long!

The O-Line will be the Key to EVERYTHING this year. Tannehill's development is counting on it. Wallace has to have TIME to get deep and Tannehill has to be in the upright position to throw the ball!

Everybody is wondering if Miller can pick up Reggie's slack? Bring in Winston and Warmack and wonder no more-lol.

I know you can't address everything in one off season, but **DAMN** if Ireland isn't doing a Helluva Job so far! As I've stated many times already, I think the "Philbin Factor" has it's prints all over these "Moves".

ValHalla!!!!

that's the best move we make in the last 5 years I tought we really needed to upgrade at safety going after goldson would have been a great idea we need to pick up atleast one more corner in free agency

Thats a Heck Of A Post...There! All that......and just one sentence. I could've stretched it into 4, but people do say I go on.....and on.......and ON!

Anywhoo....

If Ireland signed Gholdson and gave up one of our 2nd rounders for Sam Shields, I'd change my first born son's name to "Jeffy".

Ok, so maybe he'd have to use our other 2nd rounder on Xavier Rhodes as well for me to do that, but you get the idea!

ValHalla!!!!

Gholdson, Shields and Rhodes to go along with Reshad Jones?

It could happen!

Thanks Jeffy! Keep On Workin It!

Jeff went for it and got it. 4 or 5 positions to fill and then the draft. GO Phins

Wallace and Ellerbe.... Hummm, A Top notch WR and a op Notch LB.., Where have I heard this before?
Oh Yeah, Now remember, The Signing of Marshal And Dansby.
Like the song goes
"Once Bitten Twice shy".

How about negotiating with Randy Starks? Striking a longer deal with him could drive his salary down for this year and add another few mill in cap space.

Though I will say at least Wallace has a good QB throwing to him instead of the brain dead henne.
GO FINS!!!!!!!

The Dolphins still need to get another rookie WR in the 2nd or 3rd round. There will still be guys with good speed. The DB's in the NFL are punishing WR's after the catch and injuries happen. If Long goes to the Rams then the Dolphins will most likely draft an OT but they could go TE in the first round if they can't pick one up in FA. It's about contingency moves. If the Dolphins can get an OT in FA they will most likely go DB in the first round. Ireland had spoken about the contingency planning.

I've been reading through the posts. Cumulatively what I am gathering is a bunch of blah blah blah. Surely at least some of you can find something more rewarding to do with your time?

p.s. I like the way everyone ganged up on that poster who said you need 10 million free to operate the draft plus extra stuff, and bingo Armando writes this blog and proves him correct.

At least 1 out of 100 of you are right about something.

THE THIRD HIGHEST PAID RECEIVER IN THE LEAGUE? MORE THAN THE TEXANS WR ANDRE JOHNSON. THIS WAS A BUSINESS MOVE TO SELL TICKETS. JEFF IRELAND WAS FORCED TO SIGN MIKE WALLACE FOR THE SAKE OF SELLING TICKETS AND TO GET THE FANS TO ASSIST WITH THE APPROVAL TO RECONSTRUCT THE STADIUM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MIKE WALLACE WAS SIGNED FOR ALL OF THAT MONEY. IF SPEED WAS THE REASON THAT WAS A BAD MOVE. THE WR MARQUISE GOODWIN FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS RUNS OLYMPIC SPEED. WHY NOT DRAFT SOMEONE FASTER THAN MIKE WALLACE IF WE'RE USING SPEED AS THE RELIEF TO OUR OFFENSIVE AILMENT. AS A MIAMI DOLFAN MYSELF, I REALLY HOPE THAT JEFF IRELAND MADE THE CORRECT DECISION OR HE CAN KISS HIS JOB GOODBYE. COACH JOE PHILBIN WAS SAID TO HAVE WANTED WR GREG JENNINGS INSTEAD. MAYBE HE'LL STILL BE ABLE TO RETAIN HIS JOB IF JEFF IRELAND WAS TO GET FIRED. ARMANDO SALGUERO WAS ALSO AN ART ADVOCATE OF THIS NONSENSE. I HAVEN'T HAD ONE DOLFAN HERE TO CORRECT ME ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL HALL OF FAME RECEIVERS WERE OVER THE TOP BURNERS. THEY WERE ALL GREAT ROUTE RUNNERS.

guys i can't believe the negativity being written!!! you moan when we miss out on players last year r don't bring any good ones in from FA.
Yet this year we have upgraded 2 starters in the first day and still people moan! WTF!!!
This team has not been good enough in recents years, some of that will be down to JI, some won't be. I think most people agree that Parcells took this franchise down even further with his philosophy and ways of working. IMO Jeff Ireland has come out of that shadow now by turning the cap space around and by trying to bring in players that fit HIS coaches system and play in a way that is a lot more like todays NFL. Yes his ass is on the block this year, but remember this is still a young team, that is not that far away from being in the post season for a good few years. Our problem is we have arguably the most consistant top tier team over the last 10 years in our division, which makes the job a lot harder IMO. Hopefully it will be our turn in the coming years, the jets tried it the last couple of years and came close, but because they did it through free agency they are now facing the consequences financially and within the dressing room itself.

MIADOLFAN207,
you really believe this move won't help the football team???
How do you know we won't draft Goodwin anyway?? Has the draft been already whilst I slept??? ;-)
did coach Philbin say he wanted Jennings instead, or was that somebody in the media??? I'd be surprised if the media know anything because the wallace deal was kept very quiet, despite speculation that us and other were after him nobody reallly knew ANYTHING!

Offense Offense Offense. The LB'er retool wasn't a bad move it just wasn't what the team needs most. OT & TE are gaping holes on the team. Cook signed with the coach he was already familiar with so I understand why we lost him. But what is plan B and C?

What about the Oline? There has to be some bargains out there or are we waiting for Jake Long to make a decision? Wonder if Long feels like he made a mistake by with his crazy salary demands. NO WAY does he get 10 mil.

from Pgh

i'd be a little hesitant to get too excited about Wallace. that's a ton of money for him. plus be prepared for lots and lots of dropped passes. held out after one good year. he's great for stretching out the field for good possession guys underneath.
i like Wallace. just not as the #1 guy.

REG,
SPEED HAS NEVER BEEN A PRIORITY IN A WEST COAST OFFENSE SIR. THE ANALYST THEMSELVES LAST NIGHT ON THE NFL NETWORK CHANNEL SAID THAT WR MIKE WALLACE ISN'T A GOOD ROUTE RUNNER SIR. MIKE WALLACE IS ONLY KNOWN TO RUN THE VERTICAL NINE ROUTE SIR. ROUTE RUNNING IS WHAT COACH JOE PHILBIN WAS LOOKING FOR LAST SEASON SIR.

y

take your caps lock off pal, it isn't needed, although i like the sir ;-)
we are all entitled to our opinions and am happy to debate with you. However my understanding is that philbin wasn't looking at implementing a 'standard' WCO as i'm sure he said he would do his version of it.
do you agree?
In any offense you need the ability to stretch the defense and i believe that by having a deep threat, who i think does a little more than just run vertical(also he is 25,so has time 2 learn more routes surely?) can only help those route runners IMO.
I also thought philbin brought in matthews who is pretty quick???

i dont see miami cutting bess, he is one of the better slot receivers carpenter yes. patterson? i wish he had played more to gauge him, but i think 4.6 million with no dead money he will be on the block soon
