Martin signs for 2 years, Grimes and Winston still lurking

Defensive tackle Vaughn Martin signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins today. He said he was on a plane headed to a free agent visit with Seattle when he heard he was signing with Miami.

He got off the plane and headed to the Dolphins training facility to sign.

The former San Diego 3-4 defensive end said he talked with New England, Kansas City, Detroit, New Orleans and Philadelphia aside from the Chargers before signing with Miami.

"I want to be a part of it. I want to be here in South Florida. I want to help this team win," Martin said.

Martin trains with Mike Pouncey locally in Delray Beach. Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland made it an offseason priority to add a defensive tackle -- once he decided to part ways with Tony McDaniel -- because he believes the defensive line is strong, he wants to have flexibility there, and he believe adding a tackle improves on both.

So the Martin addition is good. But the Dolphins are not done, or at least don't want to be done.

They still would like to add a cornerback. They still would like to add an offensive tackle. They'd like to do it cheaply in free agency.

Brent Grimes remains on the radar. He's being patient despite the fact the free agency market for cornerbacks was not good this year and it's even worse for a player such as him coming off Achilles' tendon surgery.

The Dolphins have some confidence they can land Grimes but they're not breaking the bank for the guy. So the sides that seemingly have each other in their sights are working slowly toward trying to make a deal happen.

The team is also keeping Eric Winston in mind but the interest there isn't quite suggesting he'll land in Miami.

Winston doesn't want a short-term deal. The Dolphins don't want to commit for four years or five years and they certainly do not intend to pay $5 million per year. Maybe half that. But not $5 million per.

So Winston is waiting.

"Obviously I have ties down in South Florida, I have a lot of friends down there from college that still live down there," Winston told the NFL Network today. "I know the area pretty well. Obviously that is an added bonus, being able to play for a franchise like the Dolphins.  Like I said, if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out."

But ...

"Being down there is not the be all, end all," Winston continued. "I am excited about what is going to happen. It is a new chapter in my life and my family’s life. We are going to keep moving forward with this until something happens."

What's Winston looking for?

“The offense needs to fit what I have done," he said. "I have done a lot of zone-scheme in the past. Obviously a great place for a family, I have two kids and a wife, we want to be somewhere where it is nice. It is not a place where it has to be ‘this.’ Everything comes involved in it. The best situation will present itself. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for that to happen. Hopefully it will happen soon.”

FIRST!

Vaughn and Louis were shrewd under the radar signings. Grimes and Winston would be nice ....

Translation for Winston, Show me the money !!!
NFL to him, you've been waived two years in a row, you must be a d-bag in the locker room.

Bold prediction....

Th NFL will be sued in the not-to-distant future....for collussion against the CB position....and perhaps Revis in particular....

Ireland For King!!

You Have To Love What Ireland Has Done This Offseason So Far. Ireland Signs A CB And A OT Before The Draft!! And He Gets A "A+" In My Book for The First Half Of The Offseason.

Keep Doing Work Ireland!!

I dont think Winston is a d-bag. He grades out well for a RT. I just think that RT is not valued as high as LT so teams dont want to allocate that much money to them. Winston will probably sign elsewhere because Ireland has a price in mind for him and he wont go one cent beyond it. Or maybe Winston wants multiple years but Ireland knows the cap structure might get goofy if he signs for multiple years.

As far as Grimes- it sounds like the Dolphins are close to signing him if you can believe the reports coming from ESPN and CBS. Lets just hope its an incentive laden contract because he is coming off an achilles injury. IF he is in good form, we got a CB far better than anything we've had here for years.

Lets not forget the depth signings of Louis and Martin. They come cheaply and fit into team needs (Louis) and wants (Martin).

I predict Grimes will soon sign with the Fins. Kid would be a perfect fit down here. Winston has to come down if he wants it. He is not going to get 5 million in this market.

lol

Lets give Ross the aid only after he wins a SB.

Dashi, he can't just sign any CB or OT.

To me, those guys need to be able to start 16 games. I have no confidence in Grimes what so ever & the OT market has evaporated.

Winston has been cut twice in 2 years. Is it $$$ or declining play? I'm not qualified to know but, there aren't many good options left.

I still think the best way to upgrade the CB spotr is to sign S. Shields to an offer sheet & give up a 2nd round pick as compensation.

Yawn. Dumervil would have made their defense unstoppable, even without top flight CBs. With Wake and a guy like Elvis on the other side, no QB would have time to even think. That is how the Giants beat Brady, twice. Pressure. But, that's a no-brainer and we're committed to just doing enough to look like we're doing something before we miss out again.

You still need a QB, All of the weapons = MORE INT'S.lmao

( . )y( . )

Kris,

If Not This Year, Next Year. The League Will Be Getting Sued For Collusion.

Even Though They Already Had This Put In The CBA!! If I'm The Players I'm Going after D.Smith. The Guy Has Been In Collusion With Goodell Since Before The CBA!!

I Would Try And Nullify The New CBA. Else, They Are Going To Be Getting Colluded For The Next 8 Years!! And Nothing They Can Do About It!!

Blame D.Smith For Not Negotiating In Good Faith. He Had His Own Personal Interest Involved. Not The Players. How Big Was The Check D.Smith Received Under The Table?

Dimitri Patterson is a player. Solid cover corner with upside.

Thoughts?

This is a F'N expansion team with all new players.

Yeah, no one wants to talk about what happens if Tanny stinks again next season lol

Odds going up for a pass rusher in 1st round.

FO cant be 100% sold on Winston as a starter. If they were he would be signed already. Cant really blame them because he's been sort of kicked around like a soccer ball during his career.

Winston to me seems more starter caliber backup than definite starter. Seems to me Ireland may see him as more of a huge depth upgrade than 16 game starter. After all, its a long and grueling 16 game season and injuries to the oline do occur.

So now the oline has very good OG depth. Beit Louis or Jerry that wins the starting job. Bear fans say that Louis was easily their best olineman in 2012, and are baffled the Bears allowed him to walk.

Now Martin gives the much needed depth at DT.

Also, even if Ireland signs Winston, I do not belive it necessarily rules out Drafting an OT like Lane Johnson. Winston would still serve as quality depth. At least that's way it looks for me.

Marshall's stats are pretty impressive, we didn't see much of him last year

We will add CB(maybe 2) DE, WR ,OL , RB, LB & maybe S TE in draft

"I want to be a part of it. I want to be here in South Florida. I want to help this team win," Martin said.

What a huge turnaround in one year. The perception before was no real talent wanted to go to Miami. Now Martin, wooed by a host of teams, selected the Dolphins. IMHO, he's a solid acquisition and will help fortify an already strong DLine.

I've been hard on Ireland for a long time, but I congratulate him on a fine job this off season so far. Now all of the sudden the team could be relevant again.

LOL,

Agreed, He Can't Just Go And Sign Any LT Or CB.

But By Signing A LT And A CB Before The Draft Ireland Assures Himself Of Not Having A Major Need To Draft In The First!!

Allowing Him To Go BPA On Each Of His First 5 Picks. It Even Allows Ireland The Freedom To Trade Back And Pick Up A Future #1.

I'm Not That Big On Signing E.Winston. Didn't Like Him Last Year. Don't Want Him This Year!!

Dashi Is Happy The Fins Signed A OG. Now They Only Have To Draft 1 OG. I Don't Believe Incognito Will Be Back After This Year. And Jerry Might Not Make It Out Of Training Camp.

The One Thing You Really Have To Like About Ireland Right Now Is That He Is Not Signing Old Veterans!! He Is Still Signing Guys With Some Upside.

This Isn't The 2008 Debacle!! When Parcells Overpaid For A Bunch Of Guys That Played For Him Once!! And The Players Were Either Too Old Or Got Hurt Real Easily. Plus, Parcells Signed Everybody To Crazy Long Term Contracts!!

Ireland Spent Money This Offseason!! But It Wasn't Like He Was Needlessly Spending. Throwing Out 4 Year Deals Like Nothing!!

Ireland Is Still Building Thru The Draft!! He Is Just Reinforcing Thru Free Agency!!

Yesterday, Ireland stated his he has a 1st rd mantra for drafting core positions. He listed 4 positons he considers core positions. They are:

1. QB
2. OT
3. Pass Rusher(4-3 D = DE)
4. CB

We know the first pick will not be a QB. So that narrows our 1st rd pick to OT, DE, or CB.

So those wanting a WR or TE 1st rd, there it is from Ireland himself.

Draft

Marcus Trufant CB
Robert Woods WR
Menelik Watson OT
Robert Alford CB
Jonathan Franklin RB
David Bass DE
Jordan Campbell or Keith Pough LB
Mychael Rivera TE
Marquess Wilson WR
Braden Brown OT

For all you #17 haters, remember Elway and Peyton's first years?

YG @ 2:45 good post, this team really will have good offensive line depth. It will be an upgrade and a fraction of the cost of what Parcells and Ireland spent.

The line could be

L Johnson, Incognito, Pouncey, Jerry/Louis, Martin and had Winston, Jerry/Louis, Garner, and Samuda as the primary backups. One hell of a line right there with quality depth.

Sorry Desmond Trufant, Marcus is with Hawks

NO TO ROBERT WOODS and MENELIK WATSON!!!

Tavon Austin. Sorry but I am not believing things just bec they come out of Jeffie's mouth.

Winston for 3 yrs at 10 mill seems right; as for Grimes, this is a pass-happy league, better pay him a little more-he has talent

Ireland is going to draft K.Vaccarro

IF HE IS HEALTHY AND THE DOLPHINS DO SIGN GRIMES THEN DO NOT BE SURPRISED THE TEAM SELECTS ANOTHER WEAPON ON OFFENSE MAYBE AUSTIN! I KNOW I KNOW BUT ROSS WANTS PLAYMAKERS, PHILBIN LIKES WR'S! DON'T BE SURPRISED! IRELAND IS SIGNING YOUNG VETERAN PLAYERS TO SHORT TERM DEALS AND MAINTAINING THE 11 DRAFT PICKS. THERE WILL BE SOME TRADING GOING ON AND I WOULD NOT RULE OUT THE DOLPHINS PACKAGING PICKS TO MOVE UP OR TO GET TWO 1ST ROUND PICKS IN EXCHANGE FOR DOLPHINS 1ST NEXT YEAR AND A 2ND AND 4TH THIS YEAR. THAT WOULD GIVE THE FINS 2 1ST AND ONE 2ND AND TWO 3RD'S. THAT TAKES CARE OF TWO BAP IN THE 1ST AND BAP IN 2ND! WISHFUL THINKING ! YES BUT DON'T BE SURPRISED BY SOME MOVES THAT WILL BE MADE. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE TEAM (ROSS,IRELAND,PHILBIN) HAVE A PLAN AND SO FAR SO GOOD!

Miami is hoops heaven. No one cares about the crap Dolphins anymore.

Then why are you posting here? Why aren't you on the Heats boards?

I gotta believe Coach Philbin sees Tavon Austin and sees Randall Cobb in him.

Austin is a possibility, so is Giovanni Bernard, I think he is on their radar draft-day

Had to come back for this one. There is a report out there that Shannahan wanted to wait and draft Tannehill. I first heard it reported by Stephen A. Smith today on First Take. He wasn't happy about giving up so much for RG3 and was ready to draft Ryan is what was said. And now RG3 has fired some behind the scenes shots at Shanny so this happy marriage between the two apparently needs some work.

I have a feeling Shanny was looking for a more traditional style QB. It doesn't seem like he likes the Michael Vick types much. And his insistence to play RG3 after he was visibly limping is suspect at best imo.

From the Washington Examiner (pre draft)

"If free agency doesn't produce the Redskins' next starting quarterback, then the draft definitely will. They won't be able to trade with Indianapolis for the No. 1 pick -- and Andrew Luck. They might not be able to get Baylor's Robert Griffin III either. That means Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill is a possibility."

"Why they should draft him » Tannehill is a terrific athlete with a strong arm and mobility. Coach Mike Shanahan prizes all of those attributes, which fit well with his offensive system. At 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, he has good size. Tannehill is far from a finished product, which is good and bad. It makes sense -- if he doesn't have to play immediately -- to think he could vastly improve. He's raw yet showed numerous flashes of high-level play. It's easy to find highlight tape in which he's impressive. He's tough, and like Robert Griffin III, he has excellent intangibles. He's an accurate thrower on underneath routes, and he was coached by former Green Bay coach Mike Sherman, now Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator. So he has experience in a pro system. The Redskins would have to be patient with him, but it could pay off for many years. With good coaching, Tannehill could blossom."

get grimesssssssssss

Thanks Clarence, I enjoyed it as well. Next time we will try the bok choy.

"Why they shouldn't » Tannehill is not ready to win now in the NFL. He's a former receiver, but that isn't a problem because he was a quarterback first, and that is just evidence of his athleticism. However, a different point can be made: He played only two years at quarterback in college (19 starts). He probably will need to sit for a year, learn the system and then proceed. He might take two years. So if the Redskins want an immediate impact at this position, they probably will have to look elsewhere."

"Tannehill's delivery needs to be tightened up; he needs to improve his downfield accuracy. Some of his interceptions resulted from sloppy mechanics or from locking too long onto his desired target. Some scouts say he could have trouble with batted passes because of his low delivery point. He's coming off a broken foot, but if he works out well at his March 7 pro day, then the injury won't matter. Tannehill might be a terrific quarterback in a few years, but would Shanahan want to wait that long?"

He did well at correcting his deficiencies in his first season. He improved at all of them but still needs work on his downfield accuracy which we all know. If he shows improvement in that area (I fully expect him to improve further on the others because he showed that growth already) I do believe Tannehill can be a very good starting QB in this league. I can't wait to see how his new weapons and offseason will pay

Who likes the new logo? I guess the players will be wearing dresses and high heels next.

Good job on not signing Bennett !! Torn rotater cuff

Winston would be a good fit and solidify the offense. Time to get it done but don't break the bank on him. Give him a good base some easily attainable incentives. Then it's Grimes turn. If he's healthy he should see plenty of playing time. Something we haven't had for a while is a guy that isn't afraid to step in and pick the ball off. It's frustrating watching QB's pick the defense apart. It's like they're always in this prevent defense. It's time to get after it. Give this offense as many opportunites as possible.

Guys the Stephen A. thing and the Examiner post are totally separate. I wasn't making a connection at all. I was looking for any quotes or stories about the possibility Shanny was fine staying put for Ryan. I don't know where Stephen A. heard that but he is pretty well connected in the sporting community. With that being said, unsurprisingly I didn't find any related stories in my search.

Back to work. Until later, PEACE.

grimes would be huge, winston sucks

huh,tampa bay?

it looks like a vagina.

Mark in Toronto did you see what Vaugh Martin did at his proday before being drated? He benched 225 40 times. Just another reason for you to like this cat.

Seems to be a good replacement for McDaniel.

who doesnt love vaginas

225 is weaksauce

Hey I just read that the phins are looking to move up in the draft, I wonder who they're targeting

dont believe anything u read on draft

Probably Dee Milliner. He's the only guy worth trading up for in my opinion for the Dolphins. CB is the biggest position of need now and Milliner will be a lock down corner.

m jenkins signs with pats, bradshaw looking like pittsburgh

no tv said miami wanted to get ahead of chargers who are 11 so they can take one of the 3 left t, johnson be only one there. i dont want him

He also ran quite well NeMo. Vaughn is a great athlete just didn't play against the best competition in school. You know how I love those measurables.

I can see two different draft scenarios:

1. Trade up draft Lane Johnson

2. KC/Miami trade(Albert) for a 2nd rd pick. Then trade down(recoup 2nd rd pick); Then Desmond Trufant 1st rd. That scenario could look something like this:

1. Desmond Trufant

2a. Zach Ertz
2b. Eddie Lacy

3a. Dallas Thomas
3b. Pick a WR?(Bailey, Swoop, et al)
4. John Simon DE Oh St

You c guys can fill in the blanks with the rest of this draft.

But remember, in this scenario Brandon Albert is the new starting LT. Oline depth is also upgraded with Louis(OG) and Winston(LT). Provided Winston is signed.
