Martin signs for 2 years, Grimes and Winston still lurking

Defensive tackle Vaughn Martin signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins today. He said he was on a plane headed to a free agent visit with Seattle when he heard he was signing with Miami.

He got off the plane and headed to the Dolphins training facility to sign.

The former San Diego 3-4 defensive end said he talked with New England, Kansas City, Detroit, New Orleans and Philadelphia aside from the Chargers before signing with Miami.

"I want to be a part of it. I want to be here in South Florida. I want to help this team win," Martin said.

Martin trains with Mike Pouncey locally in Delray Beach. Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland made it an offseason priority to add a defensive tackle -- once he decided to part ways with Tony McDaniel -- because he believes the defensive line is strong, he wants to have flexibility there, and he believe adding a tackle improves on both.

So the Martin addition is good. But the Dolphins are not done, or at least don't want to be done.

They still would like to add a cornerback. They still would like to add an offensive tackle. They'd like to do it cheaply in free agency.

Brent Grimes remains on the radar. He's being patient despite the fact the free agency market for cornerbacks was not good this year and it's even worse for a player such as him coming off Achilles' tendon surgery.

The Dolphins have some confidence they can land Grimes but they're not breaking the bank for the guy. So the sides that seemingly have each other in their sights are working slowly toward trying to make a deal happen.

The team is also keeping Eric Winston in mind but the interest there isn't quite suggesting he'll land in Miami.

Winston doesn't want a short-term deal. The Dolphins don't want to commit for four years or five years and they certainly do not intend to pay $5 million per year. Maybe half that. But not $5 million per.

So Winston is waiting.

"Obviously I have ties down in South Florida, I have a lot of friends down there from college that still live down there," Winston told the NFL Network today. "I know the area pretty well. Obviously that is an added bonus, being able to play for a franchise like the Dolphins.  Like I said, if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out."

But ...

"Being down there is not the be all, end all," Winston continued. "I am excited about what is going to happen. It is a new chapter in my life and my family’s life. We are going to keep moving forward with this until something happens."

What's Winston looking for?

“The offense needs to fit what I have done," he said. "I have done a lot of zone-scheme in the past. Obviously a great place for a family, I have two kids and a wife, we want to be somewhere where it is nice. It is not a place where it has to be ‘this.’ Everything comes involved in it. The best situation will present itself. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for that to happen. Hopefully it will happen soon.”

I hope Wallace does not start criticizing Tanne/Philbin/Sherman because we don't have time to wait for him to get deep because that would be really inconvenient.

If nothing else he could be a good rotation and depth guy bobby.

Anyone else read the Jake Long story on ESPN? Evidently Long was more impressed with Bradford than Tanne in the game we won against StL last season.

BOOBYD13...IS TALKING ABOUT A GUY WHO PLAYS LACROSS AND MIGHT PLAY AS LT ...

AMAZING IGNORANCE .......................

FOR THE DOLPHINS ,HE WANTS A GUY WHO'S BETTER IS LACROSS PLAYER TO REPLACE JAK LONG.......

AMAZING IGNORANCE ...

No to trading for Albert! He doesn't fit the zone. Winston, maybe. If he wakes up and realizes that he's not worth a 4-year, $5 million per year, contract. Miami will probably offer 1 (maybe 2) for less than $3 million per year. Grimes is dragging his feet hoping for a bigger payday too. Neither are must-haves!

I'm sorry, but pass on Austin at #12...can you say Pat White? That's what happens to good college players not big enough to play in the NFL. Too much risk.

I still think that, if he's available at 12, Ireland needs to pull the trigger on Cordarelle Patterson! His up-side is too great and with the receiving corps we now have, he can be groomed and doesn't have to start immediately.

Canes can't make a basket all of the sudden. Marquette hitting 3's that they usually don't. Not a good combination so far.

When jeff Ireland lowballed Long, and Long left with no compensation to us, Ireland did not help the team. All he did was jerk everyone off.

rick games over i already turned it off, sad ending

Eric Winston > Any OL on our roster

winston sucks, wake up

WINSTON IS NOT VERY GOOD ..

Dolfan Rick, kid is only 24 years old, he may be rotational or may turn into a good LT. Definitely has the size and athletic ability to move quick.

In agreement with a previous poster- I would like us to look into signing Shields and giving up a 2nd round draft pick. I thought Patterson played well. Marshall? Well, he was hurt but didn't impress. It has also been reported the Dolphins may be high on one of the young CB's. Winston- why was he cut this year? His salary wasn't that high for a good RT. Last year's cut was because of cap issues.

tropic shields would be great but not even on there radar. currently have the worst set of corners in nfl. grimes has to be signed to start with

I would be very careful with Winston. The antennas have to be up when his former team signed him for 4 years but they let him go after one. The Dolphins should ask themselves, why? He is obviously a marginal starter in the NFL. I would sign him for 2 years 5 million, no more than that.

The signing of Martin was good, as it fills the hole vacated by McDaniel. Nothing to get too excited about though. Solid signing. At this point this is the type of player you are going to get.

orlando living in kc i can tell u that winston was solid in run blocking and beyond awful in pass blocking. kc wanted no part of him coming back.

Watch out aloco, Soon Odid will be posting in a Drunen fashion..

talked to a buddy in chitown and he said louis is damn good, bears werent happy about losing him

Why give up a second RD pick and have to pay a guy a boatload of money?? If you really want to give up a second rounder you could package it with your first and have a shot at Joeckel or someone else and pay them rookie salary. Personally I would take Kyle Long in the second and let these guys compete in camp.

Very low scoring Game. Have to get in transition, run .

I would also sign Grimes for cheap money. He comes with major red flags. A torn achilles could be a career ending injury. The last thing you want is to get commited long term to a player that is damaged goods. I think we have to trust Ireland aand his team on this one, who knows at this poing Marshall, Patterson, or a 2nd round rookie may be better than Grimes. We really have to trust the football folks on this one. As you can see no other teams are breaking down the doors for Grimes.

so bobby u would deal our first and 2nd for joekel who isnt a sure thing for a sure thing in alberts and still have first rd pick who could be a starting corner for us. so basically just the money scares u

Dusty, saw a lot of upset Bears fans posting on PFT about Louis, yea, they think they lost a real good lineman.

We just let a over paid injured LT go.. why make the same mistake?

Dusty, Joeckel is about as sure as they come. He will start from Day one, he doesn't have a bad back, he won't cost 8 million and he isn't 29 years old. I don't want to give up a second RD for anyone but yea, I would take Joeckel over Albert any day, everyday.

matty long sucked. alberts is very good

atleas we agree on Long.. Alberts is good but has back issues

but bobby ur taking joekel over alberts and trufant or rhodes

albert had back spasms last year, wasnt anything huge kc would never of franchised him if it was

Thanks for the insight Dusty. I am sure that Ireland has valued Winston for what he is a border line starter which only puts him slightly agead of Nate Garner. Therefore he probably deserves a little more than Garner but that is it.

We have plenty of picks and we have done a good job in FA so far. I think that we have to get BPA in the draft and in todays NFL some positions will have to be filled with marginal starters. I am not crazy about our current starters in the secondary and on the right side of the OL but we may have to go with them so that we can get BPA.

I would go with or current secondary if we can find the Next Von Miller and I would go with our current RT if we can get another top TE and a dominant RG or maybe a dynamic receiver like Tavon Austin.

I SEE FILTHY BOBBY!12 HAS ARRIVED, I SEE THE BLOG GOING DOWNHILL.... FAST?////////////////////

D Thomas and M Egnew wont make the roster this year.

You dont miss 6 games bc of back spasms.. and why were the Chiefs talking about moving him to guard?

bobbyd12 has been talking football Aloco. You've just been talking about how dumb people are and how far in the cellar we'll be.

ill take that bet mike

matty none of that is true. he played in 13 games never thought about guard. they overpaid for bowe just to be able to franchise albert

DOLFAN RICK...BOBBYD13 OWES ME AN APOLOGY ,FOR ALL THE ILLS HIS PEOPLE DID TO WORLD FROM STEALING OUR GOLD TO RAPE OUR WOMEN AND KIDNAP OUR YOUNG BOYS..

Omar Kelley reported that PFT indicated that Louis ranked 148 out of 150. That is scary and reminds me a lot of Mark Colombo. Again, I see this is a roll of the dice by Ireland. Hopefully, they are not thinking of starting him.

BTW- Looks like this is the end of the season for the Canes. They can't make any shots in this game. They are down by 15 and they only scored 16 pints in the first half, Yikes.

DOLFAN RICK, IS YOUR TRAILER A DOUBLE WIDE?

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Sorry I misread.. he only started one of the final six games due to his back injury.. and the rumors about the Chiefs moving him inside is true if they draft Joekle

Does a rally cap work for basketball?..lol

Hopefully this year helps in recruiting for next year. This season is over. There goes my first final four team out of my bracket. I guess they really missed Reggie Johnson. He has been struggling lately but I have to admit that they really miss him when he does not play.

I just don't believe Albert is worth a second rd pick, a possible 2nd rd pick next year and 8 million a year. I just don't see it happening. I would rather sign Grimes, wait out Winston cause he will not get what he thinks and go into the draft with 11 picks. That's my opinion

I guess it is time to start cheering for my new second favorite team Florida Gulf Coast. Go Eagles!

Evidenty not. Plus my wife thinks I've lost my mind.

I with you Orlando. Go Eagles!

I am still proud of my Canes. At least they made it to the sweet 16. At least we were not beat in the first couple of rounds. I know that they are losing a lot of seniors but they have Larkin coming back next year. This was a great year for the program. I think that with Larranaga this team can be great in the coming years.

With no other local teams playing, it is time to watch a movie with the family.

dusty,

On PFT, in the comments sections, Bear fans were saying Louis was easily their best oline player last year. They were both pissed and mind-boggled that the Bears allowed him to walk.

If he's as good as they Bear fans made him out to be, Jerry maybe good as 2nd string this year.

#12 is in no man's zone, the top 3 OTs will b gone, Dee will b gone and Xavier Rhodes is not the 12th BPA..... Trade up , trade down or hope Lane Johnson is slipping to us at 12.

I will always support the "U". We are not supporters, we are family. The hoops team did us proud!!

Bobbyd12,

Albert is franchised for 9.88 million this year. I see no gm in their right mind giving up a 2nd rd pick and taking that franchise contract. I would give no more than a 3rd.

Plus, if we had to give a 2nd rd pick, we're better off using it to move up and take Johnson. I think it will only take a 3rd rd pick to move up high enough to take him. He would command far less money too.

With 11 picks Ireland has flexibility and that will benefit us more than any other FA signing could. The ability to move up and down the draft is how NE is deep in the playoffs every yr.
