Moore, Hartline, Starks for Jake Long money

Money matters in the NFL.

Players want as much of it as possible -- and rightfully so. Teams want to horde as much of it as possible-- and rightfully so.

Interestingly, fans often side with players they like or follow and root for more than the teams and are upset when teams let good players walk. Last year, Texans fans were upset Mario Williams was allowed to leave via free agency and right tackle Eric Winston was cut.

In the coming days, many Pittsburgh Steelers fans will be unhappy if Mike Wallace leaves the team, as expected.

And I'm hearing many Dolphins fans, some on this very site, bemoaning the possibility Jake Long will be allowed to walk via free agency because he's been a good player.

Well, the reason let players you like walk is because they make priorities of other players. And sometimes quantity is just as important as quality.

Consider that Long initially considered himself "highest-paid NFL left tackle material" and wanted to maintain his $11 million per year salary he's enjoyed recently if not get a raise. That would have put Long in the $11-$12 million per year salary range.

Then consider what the Dolphins have done the past week on the contract front. They tied up Randy Starks with a one-year $8.45 million franchise tag. They tied up backup QB Matt Moore for a reported $8 million over two years. They re-signed No. 2 wide receiver Brian Hartline for $30.8 million over five years.

That's a total of $47.25 million.

If the Dolphins had met Long's intial contract desires, they would have paid him between $44-$48 million for four years or $55-$60 million for five years.

So the Dolphins got Hartline, Moore, and Starks tied up this year and in Hartline's and Moore's case, for multiple years, for the same money they might have gotten for Long alone.

Obviously, some fans will believe that would have been alright for the right to keep a starting albeit declining left tackle. Some fans will be upset if Long walks.

The Dolphins are happy with what they've done.

“I am excited that we have been able to reach an agreement with both Brian and Matt to keep them as members of the Miami Dolphins,” said Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland. “Brian is an ascending player that has steadily improved over his first four years with the organization. He has represented himself positively both on the field and throughout the South Florida community. Matt has been a valuable contributor to the Dolphins ever since he arrived two seasons ago. We are happy we were able to resign him, and we think he combines with Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin to give us an outstanding group of quarterbacks."

I believe it wise the Dolphins are likely to let Long test the market. I definitely don't think the guy is worth even $11 million per season. Not when you can get multiple good players for that price."

The Moore deal was a great move, especially with them investing in receivers having the insurance just makes sense. And no he isn't the highest paid backup in the league, thats Matt Flynn and tons of people wanted the Fins to pay that guy...

Now in FA: T (Winston), CB (Grimes) (Ross, if real cheap)(Jones?, cheap and Coyle got production from him before), S (Goldson, hey I can dream)(Bring back Clemons, not great but not bad)

I'd also like to see them sign Jackson to pair with Miller, but that is a luxury. Though if you want them to pay $5M for Bush, why not a bit more for a real RB.

jakes price wouldnt be too much if he was actually still good, but he isnt

The National Football Post's Russ Lande hears from league sources that San Diego State's Gavin Escobar is "right there" with Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz as the top TEs in this year's draft class. It's surprising to hear after Escobar turned in a disappointing Combine effort. But his game tape show a big, athletic pass-catching TE with deceptive speed and acceleration. Escobar racked up 93 catches, 1,323 yards and 13 TDs in his final 2 collegiate seasons. He's looking like a potential 2nd-round pick in April. The Dolphins have reportedly shown serious interest.

"winston was very good at run blocking last year but was horrible at pass protection"

Dusty,

There are obviously a number of other good RT's to consider. The fact that Winston has played in the zone blocking scheme & we showed interest last year is what makes him stand out though.

jakes price wouldnt be too much if he was actually still good, but he isnt

Dusty,

Agreed & I'm pretty sure Ireland would have made him the highest LT in football if that was the case.

yes winston would still be an upgrade, and he went to the u. all factors make him the hot rumor which def means it wont be him we sign

go sign lewis and houston for our corners

Hold on, there's still a few hours to sign our FAs before sending them to that Market Test.

we dont have any free agents remaining we want back oscar. we are ready to steal ones now from other teams!!

Truly, I really don't know how RT took those shots last year and still stood up. Should be better this year.

Merriman blowing up Long on that sweep in Buffalo finally made me take off my blinders on Jake and his value and play quality. It was not a happy day for me to see a player I really liked in that light.

should have plenty of money to sign couple solid corners, a te, and a lt. once wallace signs with vikings we better use that money to sign these other needs

Ross is way too cheap to pay Jake Long.

Between his learning pocket awareness and to get rid of the ball quicker and perhaps replacing 1 or all 2 starters on the L side of the OL last year, T-HIll should not be subjected to the punishment he had last Season.

dusty,

I don't get how you can say Winston was 'horrible in pass protection last year'. He gave up three sacks and I'm not even sure how many of those were his fault. If he brings the same game to the Dolphins next year, I'd be happy with that.

or way to smart harmel? u didnt watch miamis games last year i see

Or Harmel should be on another blog.

All I've seen around the NFl lately are player after player getting cut by their teams. Some good ones too. Add to that, the fact that so many teams fired their HC and/or GM this offseason and some are looking or a new QB.

Tell me again what a mess we're in and how Ireland is the worst GM? (This time do it with a straight face).

It's nice not to have the team in complete turmoil. Not saying we don't have holes that need to be filled, I'm saying show me a team that doesn't have holes.

craig living in kc i got the adv of every game being broken down for days. guy had a ton of offsides penalties on huge passing downs also, might of lead league. he was near the top in qb hits. he was horrible, was weird cause he was stout on running plays

dusty,

So are you saying you're against the team signing him? I like him. I would do it, if the price was right.

id take winston if the price is right, hes still an upgrade for us.

Just say no to Wallace! Why spend top money on an wr that has issues catching the ball? We can find a burner in the draft. Draft 2 wrs in the first three rounds, and use that money on Winston, a cb, and a te (Cook?). Offense dramatically improved, and we should have enough money to sign Reshad Jones to a long term contract.

id love to have wallace but looks like he will be a viking

comfortablynumb, what part of it takes 2 years for a rookie receiver to gel into an NFL receiver do you not get??? We can sign Wallace, 2 CBs, a safety, a TE and still have cap money left. You want a WR in the draft?? I'm sure we will take one. Not getting a #1 WR in FA = mediocre AGAIN.

Dustybottom,

I couldnt believe the KC fo would turn around and cut Winston out for tongue lashing fans who cheered the season ending injury of Matt Cassell.

Or maybe that was part of him being cut. Tongue lashing paying fans, no matter how horrible they acted the Matt Cassell afternoon.

dustybottom,

I actually was in support of Eric Winston publically tongue lasting those idiot KC fans who booed Cassell laying on the turf injured. It was totally class by the bozo sector of fans.

YG,

It had nothing to do with why they cut him. They've signed Bowe to a big contract, took on Smith's contract and they franchised Albert. On top of all that it's fully expected they will bit a tackle with the first pick. They've overspent in FA and it appears they want to substitute Winston with a cheaper, younger guy.

not always the case bobby. blackman started showing signs late last year. boldin , moss had huge rookie years. even dez had 600 yards and 6tds. yesterday that had a part to do with it and he was horrible against the pass which reid loves to do

not true craig, it did have some to do with it. only saved a mill vs cap on cutting him. wasnt money cut

I have been critical of Ireland over the past few years but I'm happy today. Moore is an excellent fall back option. Remember Earl M. and Don S. They were great back ups and produced well.you have to have depth. Hartline is an ascending player who is needed on the team. A great start to free agency along with the Starks deal. many CB's and safeties out there. Gonna be fun. I still hope Jennings over Wallace!

albert already mad in kc, saying he will hold out if they draft a lt and move him to right side. most think in kc they will draft a dl player with there first pick. but are trying hard to trade down

Craig,

It's still early in the process but so far it appears that Ireland & this franchise have finally turned the corner. I like the players we kept & I like that Ireland has not overpaid for Smith & Long.

AJ Green is a great example of a receiver excelling his rookie year. Most receivers don't though.

Dusty, there are exceptions, BUT most of the time that's the rule. I have no desire to take a chance on a rookie when the proven commodity is there for the taking. Wallace is proven and the real deal

list goes on and dark, j jones had great rookie year. many have lately as nfl throws every down

AJ Green and Blackmon are excellent examples of WRs that excell in their first year. Two years for a WR to contribute is a cliche.

Dustybottom,

I would think it played a part. I saw that it was only a 1 mil cap hit also. Then immediately thought back to the post Matt Cassell incident.

Winston was cheap enough to keep even though everyone and their mothers knows KC will make a LT thier 1st overall pick. Just a Matter of which of the 3 they take. Most reports say Joeckel.

i agre bobby but wallace has to accept our deal first and it appears minn is gonna offer him 15 per so if thats true every other team is out on him. if we cant find a wr to sig we better draft one early

Plus, i'm not saying he's going to be a pro-bowler, but Rishard Mathews showed promise last year. He definitely has the ability to contribute more this year if he gets more snaps.

yesterday every rumor here has them doing one of 3 things, trading down, taking a dl, or taking fisher.

For all the whiners out there who think that we overspent on Hartline...Well, maybe we didn't. I believe that he's telling the truth & it's very conceivable that the both the Bills & the Patriots were interested.

People need to bear in mind how much Laurent Robinson & Robert Meachum got paid last year & I'd certainly rather have Hartline than either one of those guys.

love the hartline deal, only 12 mill guaranteed

Why is nobody talking about Cromartie-Rodgers. Kid is still young, has decent size, and is a burner. He had some problems last year, but the Eagles pass rush was horrible. He could be a solid pickup.

Bobby,

Even if we don't land Wallace & Jennings--I still believe the offense improves IF we sign a TE like Martellus Bennett, a top RT in FA, & assuming Martin steps up & holds it down at LT.

There are definitely a few WR's in this draft that can help us next year.

IMO--All is not lost if we don't land Wallace or Jennings as long as we're able to add other pieces in FA.

Love when People feel glad other People got less $, but when they touch their own Pockets, Look Out! We know the Mentality.

Numb,

Good point. Hard to believe other teams would want Smith over DCR. Yes he's younger than DCR but teams are falling in love with Smith's size & not his tape.

Cant wait for you ninnies to see it plays out on the playing field this year. Then you want be as happy as your are now. This dumbass will have the last laugh!

YG has no c lass. He makes some of the dumbest statements here time and a again, yet he resorts to juvenile name calling to anyone who doesn't agree with his bloated pompous opinions .

comfortablynumb, it's a cliche??? How many WRs are drafted per year?? You name 2 that had decent years and its a cliche?? B/S

Actually Smith is only a year younger than DCR. Much rather have Rodgers-Cromartie than Smith.

YG is trash with no class and an immature fool.

Hey 3 out of 100 rookie WRs had a decent year so that means our rookie will be a stud!! Delusional

Hartline would not start on many other teams.

Dusty,

If they offer Wallace $15 Million a year then they can have him b/c they're f#cking retarded. Plus if that happens Percy Harvin will have to be sedated in a hospital.

Wallace is not Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson & he never will be.

Wallace is not Brandon Marshall either.

Hey 3 out of 100 rookie WRs had a decent year so that means our rookie will be a stud!! Delusional

Bobby,

That's why keeping Hartline was so important. There are plenty of teams interested in Wallace & Jennings & you can't count on a rookie WR being NFL ready. If we let Hartline walk then we're looking at Bess & Matthews as our starters. Ireland KNOWS he has to improve from last year (he's in the last year of last year of his deal) so it was too risky to not at least bring your best WR back.

BTW--Philbin is not Sparano so I'm sure the coaches pushed for Hartline too.

bobby i named a lot more than that. if u draft a wr in first or 2nd rd they should produce quickly. u can even look at ty hilton

YG has his faults, of course, but he's the only one here that picked up on the ramifications of the Matt Moore signing today.

Bobbyd,

I'm talking about in the first couple rounds, and WR's can contribute their first year. Of the 8 or so WR's taken last year, 3 of them had decent years, and add to that players like Jeffery that could have had a bigger year if they got more targets.

Im not your father, dont be angry with me. I wasnt the one kicking the crap out of you since the first time your mother laid you in your cradle.

If your father's now decievedm send him hate mail and adjust stupid. LOL...

i agree wallace isnt, thats why he will be a viking most likely. vikes want nothing to do with harvin, he will be traded or hold out till week 10
