Polian on Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings

Former four-time NFL Executive of the Year Bill Polian got on a conference with the media this week and the ESPN analyst gave his opinion about varying issues regarding free agency and the draft.

One point he made is that when he was with the Colts, the team studied the success rate of free agency and came away with the idea that 50 percent of free agents are successes and, obviously, 50 percent do not succeed with their new teams.

Polian has no idea which player will fall into what specific category but he judging by what he said about receiver Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings, one gets the feeling he likes the Pittsburgh player over the Green Bay veteran.

"The question of Wallace is that he is the guy who meets all of the parameters that you'd like," Polian said. "He is productive. He has great speed, which is always something that is desirable in a receiver.  He falls within the reasonable age parameters and he hasn't had a high history of injury.

"When you look at all of the things that you use to try to decide whether or not you want to pursue a player, he checks every box with few question marks. There was some issue as to how effective his hands were this year. I don't think it was a major issue, so there you have it. We'll see where the market goes. He's not 6'2" and 220 pounds, so that may be a consideration for some teams.

"But, in terms of the red flags that would cause you to turn away, he doesn't have many.  He's a guy that most people will feel is pretty desirable but, again only the market will tell. This is in many ways like an IPO. There is a lot of discussion, there is a lot of analysis, but only the market will tell you whether it's going to go or not."

And Jennings? Is he worth the $10 million per season he is reportedly shooting for in free agency? And is he even a No. 1 receiver anymore?

"Well, worth is in the eye of the beholder," Polian said. "He's got two things that sort of mitigate against a huge contract:  One is an injury history and the other is that he's 30 years of age and relief receivers, and I would categorize him as one, tend to begin to turn down at about 33 or 34.

"So, how long a contract do you give him, and what is his potential to continue to play at a high level, given the injury and age history?  Each individual club has its own individual metrics that would tell them that, and so I think that that's where it's going to go. I'm as anxious as you are to see who may step up for him.

"But there are two concerns.  There are clubs, we were one of them, that said if a guy's 27 years of age or above, we're probably not going to go for a long-term deal at big money. But if you feel you're one quality receiver away and the physical exam turns out to be okay, you might do it.  Again, that is what makes free agency interesting."

And why would I have to google a player? Do you think I haven't been obsessed with football since the first time I put my shoulder pads on at 8 years old?! HA! I spend all of this free time talking about my team, watching every game I can, reading every piece of news I can get my hands on and you tell me "Google Jennings" as if I just started paying attention yesterday? lol

COME ON MAN! :)

Playmakers, I live in NYC as well. I just think Barden could be a diamond in the rough with a new start. The Giants have a lot of WR's with Nicks, Cruz, Randle and Bennett at TE and Manningham years before that so there were not exactly a ton of chances for him to shine. I know he only had that 1 big game against the Panthers but i think he is worth a shot without taking a big gamble.

Miami needs someone who can score inside the 10 and until they can get a TE that thrives in the red zone they could use a big target. Just my perspective.

I'd like to see the Hartline deal done. I don't trust these 'reports' from 'sources.' Sources say the Dolphins are nearing a deal...How f#cking stupid is that??? Either report when the deal is done or shut the f#ck up.

How about the fact that the guy doesn't play hard when he is unhappy?

Phins78,

Where the f#ck did this come from???

Bottom line--Jennings wants to get PAID just as much as Wallace does. It's freaking hilarious that the media paints Wallace as a malcontent b/c he wants a big contract but Jennings who has been a LOT more outspoken about his desire to 'take care of his family' (Love that line btw) is the greatest guy on Earth??? Come on...It's bullsh#t.

Yeah Kris I'm not in favor of signing Jennings to a HUGE contract. I thought Jennings would come in at 7.5 to 8.5 a year which would be 3 to 4 mil less than we have to pay Wallace. I'm also hoping for a 3 year contract with an option for a fourth. If these parameters can't be met than I move on.

We are debating without understanding eachothers points, it happens.

Phins 78...

I say GOOGLE him because he is as greedy as Wallace....his last contract was thu the roof....

So money if an obstacles for all of these guys....espcially since Bowe helped set the market....

My man crush comment? WTF? Are you taking that as an insult?! It was a joke dude, I have tons of man crushes on players! Zach Thomas to name one.

Are you telling me after weeks and weeks of Armando pushing for Wallace that my comment was offensive? It wasn't a put down, maybe you're a little homophobic or something because you completely took it out of context.

Signing Wallace @ $11M+ would be a mistake. Build through the Draft! Give it some time.

Chris,

I hear you BUT Barden hasn't been able to stay healthy & like I said he has no TD's in 4 NFL seasons. It's not like we haven't tried bigger WR's like Patrick Turner & Roberto Wallace. At the end of the day, it comes down to more than just SIZE & the player needs to have the skills to score TD's in the red zone.

-----------------------------------------

LOL.....it happens to us ALL the time.....I think we are to similar....perhaps we both try to get our point out there to fast....or maybe I should just speak for self....

Amindola stays hurt to much,Hartline is equal to him,You do NOT see Hartline miss many balls or tip passes causing interceptions, sign Wallace and pick a receiver in the draft. Then Do Not resign SeanSmith he is a bum he screwed our team out of plenty of victories by getting burned on deep plays he can not cover or catch just go back and look how many potential intercetions touched his hands then the ground. One word BUM!!! Indy game for example made Luck look better than Marino. Another bum Jake Long. Good bye you are not worth double digits. Reggie Bush was not the same after the injury. he ran hard before after that he studder stepped and basically wasn t the same time to see what Miller can do.The draft is full of plenty of cornerbacks and safties Don t Screw This Up Jeff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"and if your feeling are hurt....because of how I broke it down to you...."

No hurt feelings, just disgust at the way you chose to talk down to me as if I was a grade schooler who needed to be taught a lesson. Perhaps if you "broke it down" with a tad biut more respect I would have reacted different.

IT'S THE QB STUPID.

Phins 78....

I respect your post @ 1:20....

I was out of line....and it does read very disrespectful...

I apologize....

Here's how you broke it down for me. Now "breaking it down would infer that you were teaching me something I didn't know or that you were telling me the facts of the matter. Is that what this is? Are these facts or opinions?

"You need to GOOGLE Jennings....he love money as much as any WR who has ever played the game (opinion)....look @ his pay days"

(one pay day in 2009 after he set a bunch of records and then he helped them win a super bowl by catching two tds)

"Don't just believe what the PRESS tells you....look for other sources...."

Oh really? Thanks daddy. I'm glad that you know me so well that you believe I formed an opinion based on what the press tells me.

The press tells you...

Wallace bad...

Jennings Good.....

(NEVER HEARD THIS ONCE, everyone is pushing for Wallace so I have no idea where you gwet this)

I promise you this.....that is NOT the whole picture.....

(Another OPINION)

That's the "break down"? Kris, you were wrong, just read this post that YOU wrote and tell me how I should have taken it.

How about the fact that the guy doesn't play hard when he is unhappy?

Phins78,

Where the f#ck did this come from???

It's been the talk amongst fans at "behind the steal curtain" which is a blog a Steelers friend of mine turned me on too. I have been talking to some fans about their feelings on their receiver. I figured if someone came in here and asked us about signing Hartline we would have some excellent info for them so why not go to another teams blog? I have found very few people who think Wallace is a true #1 wr due to his limitations in route running and fighting for contested balls in the end zone.

Thank you Kris! I'm sorry about the one at 1:27, I felt like I was going crazy because you don't usually talk like that and I thought you would recognize it right off the bat. I got a little testy, sorry bro.

"Signing Wallace @ $11M+ would be a mistake. Build through the Draft! Give it some time."

JJ,

Depends on what kind of production he gives. If he catches 70-80 passes for over 1000 yards & scores 8-10 TD's in each of the next 4 seasons then it won't be a mistake.

Wallace is a true burner & a guy that is a legitimate & proven PLAYMAKER on Sundays. That can't be said for ONE player in this draft or any other draft which is why he's going to cost so much. You never know what you're getting in the draft until you see the player do it in the NFL. Forget what the 'experts' tell you about the draft. Take Tavon Austin & all of his speed & it's still HIGHLY unlikely that he's going to match Mike Wallace's production on Sundays. Why??? B/c these players are very rare & very hard to find.

This is what makes me laugh about the combibne. Yes speed helps but if that's all you're evaluating then you're going to wind up being the Raiders. We drafted Ginn & Gates mostly based on their speed & look at where that got us??? Every year the 'experts' forget that if football was just about speed then Renaldo Nehemiah would have been a better player than Jerry Rice or Darius Heyward Bey would have been better than Tim Brown, etc.

Phins 78....

No problem.....and no hard feelings....I expected and deserved your follow up post....until the apology post showed up....its cool....

garrard wants 2 come back.
10-6 wit him
3-13 witout him.
lol

On the other hand WNP I am talking to fans and not coaches. I'm sure the coaches will have more insite on the matter.

Bottom line is we will be lucky to get either of these guys. Both of them upgrade our wr corp and bring something different to the table. It's up to Philbin to figure out who will fit better into his system.

And I'm sorry to say it to the Wallace proponents but that tells me Philbin might be leaning toward Jennings. Obviously I will also be extremely happy if they somehow land Wallace but I just don't see it happening.

The thing that keeps scaring me the most about Wallace is the fact that he is a straight route, speed guy. It seemed like Tannehill had trouble throwing the straight balls to north south receivers. He was EXCELLENT at throwing the croosing and slant patterns (east, west) which is what Jennings excels at. Yes I'm HOPING that Tannehill gets better with these throws.

I'm also a Dolphins fan and years of hoping have left me cynical.

2 watts here, that's my que. Later guys.

Phins78,

Tannehill has a gun. Give him a guy like Wallace to work with (& a LT that won't get him killed) & his long ball will improve.

..Hey another Ramses Barden guy...My whole point is that this guy could be signed for next too nothing. Sure we have tried before. We shouldnt try again? The only issue would be that he is good enough to make this team, and he ends up getting hurt. All the players are at risk of injury..The over is larger then the under as far as risk reward here.

Who are we kidding. We will probably sign neither Wallace or Jennings, and will seek to improve the position with a cluster of 5th - 7th round picks.

pizzant 78, that's all it takes.?
lmao

"The Dolphins' contract with free agent Brian Hartline is expected to pay him "just under" $7 million a year.
It's a pricey sum for an average, No. 2-caliber receiver, but Miami is loaded with salary cap space and Hartline otherwise would've hit the market as a top-five or six wideout. An announcement of the deal appears to be imminent. "

Wow!!! Rosenhaus is the f#cking best in the business.

That's a lot of cheese but give it to Hartline for stepping up this year when he was playing for a new contract. Does it REALLY work like that??? Ask Joe Flacco.

A lot has been said (with good reason) about age. Wallace will be 28 before the season starts. While I would love to see some long throws down field for TDs, will he be enough to get us to the playoffs?

The answer is of course no, not by himself. Years of bad personnel decisions have resulted in a team that needs help almost everywhere but D-line. Eventho we have xtra pics and good cap, will the right decisions be made? Can Ireland ever find a quality TE? What about LT with (probable) Long leaving? Martin good enough? If so, what about RT? With (probable) Bush leaving, what do you do there? Miller good enough? With Smith (probable) leaving, we need not 1 but 2 CBs. Rook CBs or WRs? They take a couple of years before you know if they're keepers or not.
Meanwhile, Wallace is 30 or 31. Is he still fast or lost a step? Is he still worth 12 mil a year?

WE NEED TO GET RID OF HARTLINE.

WE WILL NEVER MAKE IT WITH THESE TYPES OF PLAYERS.

HARTLINE
BESS
ODRICK
MISI
DANSBY
SMITH
CLEMONS
FASANO

THERE WAY TOO MANY SOFT PLAYERS ON THIS TEAM.

Daryl,

I thought we were trying to upgrade the position???

WNP- If Wallace puts up those numbers in Miami then I will gladly admit I was wrong about him. He just seems like a "one-trick-pony" (Mike Tomlin), and a bit of a malcontent to me. Jennings is preferable at a lower cost IMO while developing draft picks. Ireland needs to actually take some risks in this draft.

Cocoa,

No. That's incorrect. Both Hartline & Wallace are 26 & will be turning 27 this season--not 28. Hartline in November & Wallace in August. I believe a big reason why we're overspending for Hartline before he becomes a FA is based on his age.

Bowe is 28 & will be turning 29 & Jennings is 29 & will be turning 30.

JJ,

Wallace had 8 TD's this season which by all accounts was a 'down year' for him. If that's a 'down year' then wait until he has a 'good year.'

Phin @ 12:58,

Well said, personally I don't really care between these two receivers. Just give us one. This teams needs a vet leader of a WR just to settle things down and lead by example and make things easier for the next gen of Miami Dolphins WR. he needs to be Robert Brooks to Antonio Freeman who eventually begot Greg Jennings.

We Need Playmakers I'm starting to think if we don't pay Hartline he might have ended up in New England. Do you think that would have been a possibility?

i like the idea of getting the stud #1 WR in the draft. i'd rather have amendola at a much cheaper price tag, hartline bess and c.patterson.

lot of good receivers at the combine this year, with lots of speed and many have the 6.1 size or larger. Dolphins have a lot of early picks in this draft. These good receivers will last for 2 or 3 rounds.

if miami signs wallace , them they will draft G CHANCE WARMACK

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WORRYING ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY IS BEING SPENT WHEN WE ALL WANT A WINNER ? WE ALL ARE TIRED OF CAN'T SCORE ENOUGH POINTS AND ALWAYS SETTLING FOR FIELD GOALS, WE HAVE A 1000 YD RECEIVER WHO PRODUCED DESPITE HAVING NO HELP ON THE OTHER SIDE AND A ROOKIE QB . IT'S NOT OUR MONEY AND HARTLINE AND WALLACE HAVE PRODUCED ON THE FIELD AND ARE BOTH STILL YOUNG PLAYERS! FORGET DRAFTING A SAVIOR RECEIVER IN THE DRAFT! THEY HAVE YET TO PROVE ANYTHING AND WHO IS TO SAY THEY WILL! IF THEY DON'T THEN WE ARE RIGHT BACK TO SQUARE ONE JUST AS WE ARE WITH NEEDING A PASS RUSHER! BUILDING THE OLD PARCELS WAY WAS OKAY 5 YEARS AGO BUT NOT NOW!! HAVE YOU NOTICED THOSE RESULTS ? STRONG AND TOUGH ON OL AND DL, ALWAYS KEEPING GAMES CLOSE BUT CAN'T SCORE ENOUGH TO WIN! THE LEAGUE HAS CHANGED AND NOW JEFFY HAS TO CHANGED! IF PHILBIN AND IRELAND DON'T LIKE WALLACE AND BLOWS THE DEAL BOTH WILL BE GONE NEXT YEAR!! THE TEAMS CANNOT AFFORD TO BE PICKY WHEN WE ARE AVERAGE!! GET WEAPONS AND KEEP WHAT WE GOT! GO DOLPHINS! SIGNS MIKE WALLACE! GET IT DONE AND THINGS WILL CHANGE!

The free agent class at wide receiver this year is is a paradigm of the the old adage that you need to be able to draft well. Are you people for real? Twelve mil a year for a smoke and mirrors receiver. This draft is loaded with speed at WR. Speed is really all Wallace has to offer. Re-sign your own players that you know, trade the ones you foresee as not being resignable the next year if possible, and get talent through the draft.

why is Jenning so OLD at 30? yet Welker is older and age not an issue?

give Wallace 7 years 80 mil - he is not a mistake...

you build defense through draft

and why can't we have both Walalce and Jennings? we have the cash. give Jenning a contract with incentives. and yes also sign Hartline. time for big time offense in Miami.

Eric Winston was cut by KC, i wonder if he will come crawling back for a place to play only this time the price is down. he can help solidify our OT position.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ROOKIE WR WITH SPEED AND A PROVEN VETERAN WITH THE SAME SPEED,IS THE VETERAN HAS PERFORMED AGAINST NFL CALIBER DB WHO HAVE ALREADY MADE THE NFL NOT DB WHO MAYBE GOOD IN COLLEGE BUT CAN'T CRACK AN NFL ROSTER! WALLACE AND HARTLINE HAVE PROVEN THEY CAN PRODUCE IN THIS LEAGUE! WE NEED PROVEN WR NOT MAYBE WR TO UPGRADE OUR WEAKNESS! IF THIS TEAM IS GOING TO IMPROVE FROM 7-9 WE NEED TO UPGRADE WITH PROVEN YOUNG VETERAN PLAYERS! I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH A ROOKIE RECEIVER WHO COMES IN AND HELPS BUT THAT'S ONLY WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE GOOD RECEIVERS ON YOUR ROSTER AND YOU'RE SIMPLY BUILDING DEPTH! WE NEED WALLACE AND HARTLINE AND I EVEN WANT TO KEEP BUSH! BUT WE MUST SIGN WALLACE AND HARTLINE!

Superb site you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any community forums that cover the same topics discussed in this article? I'd really love to be a part of community where I can get advice from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Appreciate it!
