Sean Smith to Kansas City

Turns out Vontae Davis had it right all along.

Sean Smith has agreed to a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to his agent.

That leaves a void for the Dolphins. But is anyone all that upset?

It should depend.

And it will, as many things do, depend on the money.

The Dolphins liked but didn't love Sean Smith. They never were intending to franchise him, as the Palm Beach Post reported. They never were intending to pay him the $8 million per season that Smith originally thought he'd be worth.

So the question becomes, how much did Smith actually get?

If Smith got his asking price (doubtful) then the Chiefs overpaid and you tip your hat to Smith and wish him well. Ciao!

Have fun covering Demaryius Thomas and playing against Phillip Rivers and Peyton Manning twice a year.

If, however, the Chiefs were more careful with their dollars and got Smith for a bargain -- say, $2-$3 million per season -- then the Dolphins made a mistake not keeping Smith.

[Update: YahooSports.com reports the Smith contract is three-years for $18 million with $11 million guaranteed.]

Smith, supremely talented but also supremely inconsistent, was worth some money, some respect, if for no other reason than not allowing cornerback to become a glowing hole on the roster.

My feeling is this likely will land somewhere in between the two obvious choices of overpayment and underpayment.

In either case, the Dolphins now need cornerback help.

Yes, there are guys available in free agency. Brent Grimes is out there. Aqib Talib is out there, although when he came out in the draft, the Dolphins had major flags on him and he's done nothing to change that as a pro.

But I see the team seriously considering cornerbacks in the draft. I've been told the Dolphins really like Florida State's Xavier Rhodes. He's probably the second-best corner on the market. He's 6-1. He ran a 4.4 at the combine. He's played top competition. He has the measurables.

Is he a can't miss? No.

But he is probably a first round caliber pick.

And don't be surprised if the Dolphins double down at cornerback during the draft. They did that in 2009 with Vontae Davis in the first round and Sean Smith in the second round. Of course, that didn't exactly work out exceedingly well, as we close the book on both.

'Still don't see anything official about Long signing with the Rams.'

Bobby,

Not done yet. Same with Keller.

Now that SS is officially out of Miami I expect Ireland to sign a good CB soon enough. I won't be mad if we draft both David Amerson and Darius Slay in the second round, it would depend on how much we improve OL and TE through FA I guess.

Hope Jake L. makes a choice TODAY so we can finally begin improving the OLine too!

Atticus Fool, there is a bus waiting for you, please step in front of it and do the human race a favor.

So will the league look into whether there wad any tampering? Kansas may have played it clever after vontae opened his mouth and just left it a few days before they struck a deal 'officially'

I don't think we intended to ever resign this player as I said earlier today when analyzing our FA PLAN it's clear as day that our intentions were to get younger more athletic at LB, add the speed WR, T.E. and resign Long. This leaves a clear map to our draft strategy being DB's.

I have been a fan of drafting Rhodes for sometime as I've posted given I saw a bunch of him in College and believe him the real deal. Andy Reid just got himself one of the more inconsistent guys in Football and the whiffs on Tackles will have him regretting this move by mid-season.

Long has not signed or been offered a deal yet so getting him back or his replacement while addressing the T.E. Pos. probably remain our main objectives in FA and I believe we do get it done.

If we then draft

1) X.Rhodes

2) BA CB left (Amerson, Poyer or Miss. St. D.Slay with all over 6')

2) BA WR left (Justin Hunter, DaRick Rodgers big 6"3" types to add to dimension)

while maybe even taking BLAZING fast Marquise Goodwin in RD-3 as well then I feel we maybe on the verge of something special given the FA group (after completing it with a T.E. & OT.

LOL,

Since we've signed 3 off the street it's likely a wash right now on compensatory picks. Fasano too but I'm sure we'll sign at least another player or two. I'm not expecting any compensatory picks from this off season.

Loose lips sink ships ,,,,,,,this is the dolphin way

The key is not who you lose but, who takes his place.
This is Ireland's biggest job. The draft.

A better pass rush will help whoever your CB's are. And right now, Miami's starting Cb's might as well be named Who & Ever!

Maybe the idea is to rebuild Cb's in the draft & not spend in FA. Then Bennett in for a visit makes sense.

Eat ham today.

I don't see him as a loss, he never 'won' us a game. He did however, make a huge mistake as time expired in Arizona, letting Kolb force overtime... He dropped Andrew Luck twice up in Indi, those turnovers would've won us the game.

I like Smith when a RB comes off the edge, he uses his big body well, but I just don't think he's all that good against the pass to be honest.

We have 5 picks in the top 82, that's tons, I say we go up and get the top CB available.

'Ive never heard Of Mike Bennet, what are his strengths?'

41 Tackles, 9 Sacks, & three FF's last year. Played for TB & ee's Martellus Bennett's (the TE) brother.

David, Carla, Thomas, and Maria all had ham today.

There is no reason you should not also have ham today unless you are Jewish or Muslim.

But even if you are, I will nt tell anyone so go ahead and have ham anyway.

Armando,
We started free agency with a glaring need at WR. Three days into the draft we now have a glaring needs at CB, TE, LT (If Long signs as expected with the Rams)
and no proven RB. Furthermore we now have "0" to show for the top picks in Parcells and Irelands first two drafts. Maybe Mike Wallace is so fast that he can play LT,TE,RB and WR at the same time. Then he can play CB on defense.

18m for Smith???? you gotta be kidding me the guy cant cover a paper bag lolol.... Very foolish money. Now that hes getting paid you think he will try to get better I think notttt

Armando, Three days into free agency (sorry)

I keep talking to Seahawk fans who say they need an interior lineman? Maybe Odrick???

Smith, supremely talented but also supremely inconsistent, was worth some money, some respect, if for no other reason than not allowing cornerback to become a glowing hole on the roster.

My feeling is this likely will land somewhere in between the two obvious choices of overpayment and underpayment.

Mando,

What in the world are you talking about??? How could this be 'underpayment???' Thus is the same player who allowed more combined first downs & TD's than ANY CB in the NFL last year right???

You fin fans are nuts. You put a supremely talented guy with motivational issues in the starting #1 CB spot, with a terrible secondary and worse coaching and expected him to kill it. Mark my words, playing with Flowers and Berry, and having a lot of competition, you all will wonder where the hell this Sean Smith had been for you guys. NFL is all about motivation and wanting to win for your teammates - there was no accountability - he wanted out and you could see it every Sunday. Al Harris and Emmitt Thomas will have this as top 5 secondary

We need a big hard hitting safety that can really lay the wood to Gronkowski too. Jones plays ss, we need a big hard hitting safety to try and counter Gronkowski better.

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 14, 2013 at 02:27 PM

It's why I didn't get the resign especially with CAP casualty Q.Mikell out in the market. We could address in RD-3 of draft with Georgia's Shawn Williams. In a deep group of Safety's it wouldn't surprise either if we took FS TJ McDonald (Dad Tim was a baller!) in RD-4 as well who at 6"3"/220 could play SS as well.

Free agents are like escorts. They come for money. If you give them lots of money escorts give you the girlfriend experience. Free agents give you the good citizen experience. The Dolphins want fans to fall in love with Mike Wallace and buy tickets. Thats like bringing an escort to your mom's house and asking her to fall in love with your date.

For Bennett & Gibson to be in the picture, Bess & Odrick smell blood in the water.

They are both young & have reasonable cap numbers. Trade bait or outright release, no cap hits I don't think.

Ireland has to hit on his early picks this year because eventually the guys he drafts are going to replace these big cap number guys.

Nnamdi Asomgha please....

Albert,

Well that's one way to explain UFA. I guess that would make Mike Wallace a Russian bride lol

Question for you guys. If Miami does sign Bennett to help the pass rush out are they able to rescind Stark's franchise tag to get back that 8.5 million? I know at first glance Odrick would be the odd man out but would letting Starks go free be another alternative?

Chiefs are a bunch of SUCKERS!!!!! HAHAHAHA

The best predictor of future success is past behavior. Sean Smith can't catch, can't tackle, can't play zone coverage, can't cover the slot, can't cover guys that are smaller than him, can't cover guys that are faster than him, looks lost playing in space, and likes to "Tweet" unintelligble messages on a regular basis.

Who will be the lucky few to eat HAM tonight?

Only 6 Mill a Year , He Wanted 9 Mill From The Fins , Ok

No doubt there is small room for error when looking at the CAP # for Wallace alone next Yr.

Ok, so Long gone, Smith gone. What now? I'd rather wait until the draft for CB, but what about OL? We going after Vollmer? Someone else? Wait until the Draft? Remember, first 3 round positions of need should be (in no specific order): CB/DB, TE, OL, DE (pass rusher), WR, RB.

Still need some more depth IMO.

Sign Carey Williams and draft Zavier Rhodes at #12 overall....CB problem DONE with an UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!

Good Riddance!

Armando, Maybe Mike Wallace can bring Dan Rather and Leslie Stahl to play CB and LT.

No thx to Nnamdi Asomgha. He's going into year 11 and would probably be better converting him to safety. Ala and old Woodson or Ronnie Lott.

At this point of his career I would only say yes to Nnamdi Asomgha if he signed at about 6 million a year.

SINCE SS IS GONE THAN MY CHOICE WOULD BE TALIB FROM NE! WEAKEN THE PATRIOTS AT EVERY ANGLE TO CLOSE THE GAP! WHO WOULD THEY HAVE TO CHECK BOTH WALLACE AND HARTLINE? SOME ROOKIE DB? MAYBE! BUT EVENTUALLY THAT SAME YOUNG DB WILL GET BURNED FOR 6 ! THE PATS ALREADY HAVE LOST CHUNG AND EVEN WITH HIM THERE SECONDARY WITHOUT TALIB WAS NO BETTER THAN THE FINS! YEAH MORE INTS BUT THAT'S BECAUSE BRADY PROTECTED THEM BY SCORING SO MANY POINTS! NOW THE FINS WILL BE ABLE TO SCORE MORE WITH WALLACE AND IF THE PATS HAVE A DEPLETED SECONDARY EXPECT THEM TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE FINS. SO JEFFY SIGN BOTH BENNETT AND TALIB AND YOU HAVE CLOSED THE GAP EVEN FURTHER WITH THE PATS TO THE POINT THAT IF YOU CONTINUE SUCCESS IN THE DRAFT AND PRODUCE COUPLE OF STARTERS THAN I CAN SEE THE FINS STEALING THE AFC EAST! SOUND STRANGE! NOT REALLY! THE PATS IF THEY DON'T REPLACE LOST PLAYERS ARE IN TROUBLE! DON'T LET THEM GET AUSTIN OR PATTERSON IN THE DRAFT IF WE CAN HELP IT BUT FOR NOW SIGN TALIB AND BENNETT! GO DOLPHINS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JEFFY AND WE'LL START CALLING YOU JEFF!

DaRick Rogers has great talent, but a horrible attitude, like I said earlier, a characteristic Of UT teams under both Kiffin and Dooley.
He is pretty much equal in talent to Cord Patterson.

Sean "J.B Brown" Smith is gone at last. Some of you older dudes remember J.B Brown the CB for the Fins in the mid 90's goodbye "Just Burn Brown".

Fin, I don't think the cap will be a huge issue with Wallace's deal. Other contracts will expire, other players will leave. More young draft picks will require much less money.

Also, most of the guaranteed money is being paid out in future years, not this one. We had about $46 Million! I am not sure of the exact number but based on the guaranteed numbers so far, I think we still have about $22 mil available this year!

Emergencies & rookies account for roughly another 10. Irelands plan might just be to carry over 8-10 million in space every year into the following years cap to restructure & accomodate it all.

Question for you guys. If Miami does sign Bennett to help the pass rush out are they able to rescind Stark's franchise tag to get back that 8.5 million? I know at first glance Odrick would be the odd man out but would letting Starks go free be another alternative?

Chris | March 14, 2013 at 02:57 PM

If we can ink him to a Multi-Yr. deal then we can reduce that # significantly. I think we will but didn't want to risk exposing him to the FA market were his ability inside 4/3 and outside 3/4 made him a player that would have had alot of suitors.

NFL Network reporting J.Long deal in St. Louis imminent so maybe working out Starks longterm in order to pitch S.Vollmer filling need and opening hole on Pats is a thought to ponder for Ireland.

I like Cary Williams as a solid vet to bring in. Then draft 2 corners in the draft. Also need a offensive tackle and maybe a guard. Not sure how big the team is on John Jerry. We'll see. Phins up!

Carey Williams and draft Xavier Rhodes. Both are playmakers and Carey has the experience we will need. Rhodes can step into the NFL and start right away. Then in 2nd round we can draft the best available TE. This is assuming we sign Winston to play LT and Garner as backup.

Even if we could get a Talib or grimes, I wouldnt mind seeing us back that move up with the hard hitting Xavier Rhodes. He's a ferocious hitter and at some point the ball will be coming out via incomplete pass or fumbles.

Rhodes opens the door to more turnover turnovers opportunities.

Nutcracker, sorry to disapoint you but JB Brown was 80s, early 90s. haha, I remember him too but he was way gone by the mid 90s. That was TBuck time.

The best analysis of the 2009 draft is here:
http://tedginnandtonic.blogspot.com/2009/04/2009-dolphins-draft-picks-thoughts.html

Each and every pick from Jeff Ireland was outstanding.

Sean Smith: 5 INT in 63 career games, the worst tackler on the team...ciao buddy no one will miss you here

Posted by: Chris | March 14, 2013 at 02:57 PM

Chris I don't think Odrick is anywear near the tackle that Starks is. Starks is one of the best in the league..thus his $8 miilion salary. What we need to do is get a 2 or 3 year deal done with Starks.

Truthfully I would be realy surprised if we signed Bennett although he does fit into the young veteran mold that they seem to be looking for.

I think he was an undrafted free agent in Tampa which scares me that he could just be a system guy and last year could have been an aberation.

FA has been a giant nightmare, & is getting worse.

Typical Ireland...........no Plan B or C.

What good is Mike Wallace if our QB is on his back?

What good is Linda Ellerbe if the opponent's WRs roam the field unmarked?

Ross must intercede now to prevent FinPocalypse.

Smith & Long leaving is addition by subtraction.

Lose 1 broken down LT & 1 over rated DB & replace them with cheaper probably better options.

If Long does sign w/the Rams, someone should put a courtesy call into Dashi to make sure he's ok.

He plays outta position should be a safety anyways

Once Manning picks on Smith for a game or two Chefs fans will see why we let him go.

PS: I didn't mis-spell Chefs.

I'm thinking something was up with Keller. Either he didn't pass the physical or wants more than Ireland was offering. Supposedly, Miami took him out to dinner last night. So, he's been wined & dined, but so far no one has heard anything.

I, for one, believe that Ireland has done a pretty good job this year...so far. And, I'm not one to praise little Jeffy either. We needed Wallace, and we got him. The mass media may roast us over the coals for it, but they'd do that anyways if we didn't get him. Let 'em hate!

Ireland seems to be following a plan, a blue-print, that probably came from Philbin. Let's all see it play out before we criticize the Front Office. Some things will work out the way they planned, and some won't.

I think it's gonna be a good year for the Dolphins!

GO FINS!!!

B33 he can't play safety he can barely tackle.

LOL | March 14, 2013 at 03:13 PM

His 2014 # is over 17 Mil. followed by a steady average of 12 to 13 Mil. every Yr. from there. It's worth taking note and my point is Ireland (who so far has done a solid job and can see his plan)needs to hit on these 5 picks in top-100 of coming draft.

It might be that Ireland is happy with Patterson and Marshall as our corners. But he might go after one of the remaining FA CBs. We want no rookies here manning that Post.

K. Lewis almsot a done deal to NO. Steelers continue to weaken as does the CB market.

If Ireland was gonna pursue FA cb's, you would think they would have had a couple in for a visit by now.

It's very possible Ireland is going with Marshall Patterson & drafting a bunch.

Very possible, LOL, very possible. Yes.

Mathematics solves the mysteries of the universe. With that in mind lets use math to gauge the Dophins free agency so far. Plus Minus
Mike Wallace Anthony Fasano
Phillip Wheeler Kevin Burnett
Dannell Ellerbe Karlos Dansby
Reggie Bush
Sean Smith
Jake Long (?)

The conclusion is the minus far outweight the plus. NOT GOOD so far.

Bobby Monica = low information blogger

Why isn't Ireland on a Private Jet scooping up Ed Reed to wine, dine & sign!?!

No thx to Nnamdi Asomgha. He's going into year 11 and would probably be better converting him to safety. Ala and old Woodson or Ronnie Lott.

At this point of his career I would only say yes to Nnamdi Asomgha if he signed at about 6 million a year.

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 14, 2013 at 03:07 PM

The Eagles owe this player 4 Mil. for 2013 so getting him in around 6 Mil. for the Yr. is doable although I agree with you and would address CB through draft (let Rex trade Revis and deal with a guy who I believe coasted after big contract or he goes to contender and plays like we know he can). C.Williams is an interesting guy in FA but what does he want and after losing Ellerbee I believe Ozzie inks him.
