Sean Smith to Kansas City

Turns out Vontae Davis had it right all along.

Sean Smith has agreed to a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to his agent.

That leaves a void for the Dolphins. But is anyone all that upset?

It should depend.

And it will, as many things do, depend on the money.

The Dolphins liked but didn't love Sean Smith. They never were intending to franchise him, as the Palm Beach Post reported. They never were intending to pay him the $8 million per season that Smith originally thought he'd be worth.

So the question becomes, how much did Smith actually get?

If Smith got his asking price (doubtful) then the Chiefs overpaid and you tip your hat to Smith and wish him well. Ciao!

Have fun covering Demaryius Thomas and playing against Phillip Rivers and Peyton Manning twice a year.

If, however, the Chiefs were more careful with their dollars and got Smith for a bargain -- say, $2-$3 million per season -- then the Dolphins made a mistake not keeping Smith.

[Update: YahooSports.com reports the Smith contract is three-years for $18 million with $11 million guaranteed.]

Smith, supremely talented but also supremely inconsistent, was worth some money, some respect, if for no other reason than not allowing cornerback to become a glowing hole on the roster.

My feeling is this likely will land somewhere in between the two obvious choices of overpayment and underpayment.

In either case, the Dolphins now need cornerback help.

Yes, there are guys available in free agency. Brent Grimes is out there. Aqib Talib is out there, although when he came out in the draft, the Dolphins had major flags on him and he's done nothing to change that as a pro.

But I see the team seriously considering cornerbacks in the draft. I've been told the Dolphins really like Florida State's Xavier Rhodes. He's probably the second-best corner on the market. He's 6-1. He ran a 4.4 at the combine. He's played top competition. He has the measurables.

Is he a can't miss? No.

But he is probably a first round caliber pick.

And don't be surprised if the Dolphins double down at cornerback during the draft. They did that in 2009 with Vontae Davis in the first round and Sean Smith in the second round. Of course, that didn't exactly work out exceedingly well, as we close the book on both.

I swear some of the Dolphins fans would complain halfway through a movie about the ending. Just shut the f up.

The truth is simple, bobbyd12, not all mysterious.

low information is all that is needed to decipher the low strategy underlying Ireland's FA approach.

Get over Day 1's splash, already, and take a good hard look at the disaster that has unfolded in its wake.

The national media get it, why can't you? Ireland's destruction of this one-proud franchise continues & is gaining momentum.

Good Bye to Jake and Sean both highly over rated .Good job in clearing out average players and replacing them with equal or better players that are younger and cheaper. TE is a must early in the draft even if we sign Keller
Whether we win more or not at least we have hope ! Last years draft was pretty good so if Jeffy improves his draft this year like he did this years free agent signings so far we out to be in Great shape talent GOOD RIDANCE SEAN and. JAKE just remember your play in the Indy game that's why you are both gone YEA!

It's very possible Ireland is going with Marshall Patterson & drafting a bunch.

When looking at FA targets (signed and lost) you see the map to the draft laid out in front of you.

Bobby Monica, I call your b/s. The national media, including nfl network, yahoo sports and sports radio in Miami has done nothing but PRAISE Ireland and what he is doing. We don't need Ed Reed. We need young, quick players. The contracts have limited cap hits and have been done well. Ireland has turned this around. Go to the Sun-Sentinel where Omar gets everything wrong, you will fit right in.

Patterson is a keeper and an upgrade!

Seller gone makes NE weaker that Brady Welker magic is gone Yes Amindola is good But he gets injured and hasn't played a whole season in 2years and now with Smith gone Brady will not have OPEN targets We will finally have a new secondary that can CATCH not just touch and tip CATCH like Sean smith can not do

Been a Dolphan since 1970 and it finally feels like we have some good days ahead
Let's sign Keller just to stab the Jets in the heart. Love. It

OUR GARAGE MANAGER , EVERY YEAR HE MAKES OUR DUMB FANS HAPPY FOR FEW DAYS ,THEN ,THE TRUE SAD END COMES TO LIFE..

THE
BUSTS...............

THE CELLAR FANS ...........

FREE AGENT AND FORMER BALTIMORE RAVENS CB CARY WILLIAMS PLAYS AGGRESSIVELY WELL AT TIMES. IN THE SUPER BOWL AGAINST 49ERS WR RANDY MOSS, WILLIAMS SHOWED "NO FEAR" PLAYING MOSS UP CLOSE IN MAN COVERAGE AND ALMOST HAD A PICK IN FRONT OF HIM. A CARY WILLIAMS AND XAVIER RHODES DUO WOULD BE GREAT TWO PHYSICAL DEFENSIVE BACKS. DIMITRI PATTERSON COULD SERVE US IN THE NICKEL AND DIME PACKAGES. BUT AT A LOWER PRICE. RICHARD MARSHALL HAS EXPERIENCE AT THE FREE SAFETY POSITION. MARSHALL AND CLEMONS CAN COMPETE.

I probably would have kept Smith for 6 mil a year although that's the top end. He definitely wasn't worth 8 a year. I'm not crazy about him either, but there's not much left out there and we have a bunch of nobodys at corner now. I hope their plan at CB works out.

Still not happy that we lost our #1 RB, a tackle , a TE and a CB, all areas of need. Still a looooonnnnnnggg (no pun intended) way to go.

He needs to call his grandma too.

Was Smith and Vontae picks that were made by Ireland? I forget which year the change from senile Tuna was official.

If Ireland chose both, you have to wonder what kind of choice he will make while replacing them?

They were both underwhelming players, who couldn't make plays to save their lives. I'm not sad to see Sean Smith go and he didn't deserve the huge raise he would have received if Ireland had matched or exceeded KC's offer.

My concern is how we get better there. Smith wasn't the answer. Who is?

Let's just get one thing very clear about the changes that have been made since Philbins arrival. How the players arrived or where they were drafted was not important.

He has eliminated the horrible culture of mediocre players who have made claims about their greatness long before proving it on the field. Look at the list. Davis and Smith claiming to be the "best" corner tandem in the NFL. Really!!! Dansby claiming to be the best linebacker. Come on dude, can we say Patrick Willis, Von Miller. Burnet chirping along with Dansby about the great LB's in MIA. Bush claiming he will lead the NFL. Not even close. Long simply by wanting to be paid the highest at position, but at least he did not have a big mouth.

All the same, good players or pretty good potential, but none of them dominated there position. Good luck elsewhere.

Not one player at Green Bay, Mathews and Rodgers included, rave about being great. Their play does the talking.

Let's all hope that Philbins influence is making Ireland a wiser GM. So far this offseason shows that even if they did overpay Wallace. But Wallace is a good addition to the offense and luckily Thill does not have to be paid for a few years until he proves something.

Need a T, Passrusher, 2 cbs, te, rb, should fill 3 spots through the draft. Te is thin in this draft so TE in FA is a must unless we go after that boy from Stanford.

Davis, now smith gone but not forgotten. Whats Smiths first name again? Theres better DBs out there and ole Jeffery will find 'em. Maybe...KC got hosed,,,

Once again, WNP= The Voice of Reason!

Vontae Davis said he and Sean Smith were " the best corner tandem in the league". I always thought he either had some screws missing or was on some seriously potent illegal narcotic. Both of them gone.... THANK GOD!. He definitely is not worth $11 million. The guy can't catch, gives up way too many plays, and is extremely inconsistent. I honestly feel sorry for the KC Chiefs. The only decent move they made was getting QB SMith, and watch out, he will NOT have the team he had in San Fran. Anyway, GREAT WORK JEFF!!! Now please get rid of Richard Marshall, and Dimitri Patterson. Go after Grimes and get another 2 CB in the draft. Be Patient! As for Long, he'll be on the IR list yet again this year and we'll be laughing hysterically at Jeff I'm too good for you Fischer. Eric Winston, and Michael Bennet mest be next!!!

Stop with the cries for Grimes. The people in Atlanta are ambivalent about him. Two years in a row he has not played a full season. He pocketed $10 million in franchise money and did not play a down. We can get two starting CBs in the draft. If memory serves me right, we started Davis and the great Sean Smith—I mean the GREAT, GREAT Sean Smith—as rookies. Rhodes and a CB in the 3rd with Marshall and Patterson will hold things down. We got rid of Vontae because Patterson was doing well before his back problems.

Thank god smith is gone!!!!! Idiot Vonte Davis tweeted he was in talks with kc then he disappears for last 3 days than out of the blue he happens to sign with chiefs sounds fishy to me I hope kc looses a draft pick for tampering because they just lost any chance of winning afc west for signing sorry ass smith!!!!

As bad as KC is, SS will be the worst corner on the team. Thank you Andy Reid for relieving me of the anguish that I felt every time the ball was thrown his way.

Seriously who the F*$% is going to play cornerback for us next year? We need three starters not three rookies!

V. Davis, gone. J. Long, gone, S. Smith, gone, Pat White..ha ha ha, etc. etc.
This proves that Dolphins high round picks have been very low productive. This proves Ireland's incompetence along years.

I really hope that the Dolphins improve substantially next season (10-6 at least), otherwise Ireland should leave the team.
He had enough time, too much I'd say.

When Nolan Carol is getting burned like gas on a fire. You guys will long for the days of Vontae and Sean. Dont worry though we've got Matt Moore and Brian Hartline under contract (geez!)and we couldn't pay Reggie 4mil or Sean less than 6mil(most of his contract is not garanteed) Patch a hole and create a new one! Great job jeffy...great fricking job!

GOOD , finaly some one (KC) took the open door.
