Smith, Long not necessarily gone from Dolphins

The assumption relative to the Dolphins and free agency is that Mike Wallace will be coming and several players will be leaving. Well, that might not be fully the case.

Prospective free agent cornerback Sean Smith isn't a certainty to leave, a league source tells The Herald's Adam Beasley. And prospective free agent left tackle Jake Long isn't a certainty to leave, a league source tells me.

Meanwhile, you know I've reported Reggie Bush is pretty much gone and that is still the expected course.

[Update: Detroit is interested and the Bengals may join the fray, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.]

So let's retrace:

Agent David Canter, who represents Smith, is said to be negotiating with multiple teams. And as the last time Canter was juggling teams his client Paul Soliai picked a return to the Dolphins for less money -- even as Canter had him set to get on a plane to visit another team -- it opens the door that Smith is still in play -- particularly since a source is saying as much.

For Long, the Dolphins want him back. But they don't want to back the Brinks truck to his front lawn. And Long wants that Brinks truck visit. So the market will  determine his worth. If the market for Long is as cold as has been reported in some sectors, including profootballtalk.com, then the Dolphins will be in the hunt.

[Update: Tampa Bay is among the teams interested in Smith.]

If the market for Long is as rich as he hopes and believes, then he's likely gone because the Dolphins will be outbid for a player with an injury history the past two seasons.

The answers will likely come quickly starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

You guys are in denial. Like teenage girls. Why don't you address my points. Wallace was average last year, why would you expect him to be better on a less talented team?

Don't be in denial, it only makes you look like frightened sheep.

Mendenhall was right about 9/11.

9/11 was an inside job.

World Trade Center 1, 2 & 7 were brought down by controlled demolition.

The Dolphins Will Resign Jake

u fail to realize wallace just running a deep route takes the top off the defense

You know we could have had Boldin for a 6th round pick and half the money that we are going to spend on Wallace.

Now we are talking about Minnesota getting into a bidding war over Wallace. Minnesota now has to calm Petterson down so we could be talking about 13 or 14 million.

Is Wallace really worth all that to you guys. Their are probably three maybe four receivers in the NFL worth that type money and Wallace isn't one of them.

Going to be interesting. I like the TE Cook rumor now that makes sense. West coast offense needs a TE and two posetion receivers on the outside.

The Gibons story makes more sense than the money they are talking for Wallace.

Go Dolphins!! The Vatican opens Free Agency Tommorow.

I get more tail than trashyd12!

shula no we could of had boldin for a 6th, the harbaughs helped each other out and got him into the nfc instead of afc.

i'll take jake back but at a reduced price that allows us to concentrate on other areas of need. I wouldn't pay top money for him, although I doubt anybody really knows whats going on as the dolphins have done a pretty good job at keeping things 'in house' which is how the smart teams do business. Yes there is the memo from the league but good teams keep their business quiet until deals are pretty much done. I think this franchise is heading in the right direction and it starts with how they conduct their business from a professional image at the front office. I just hope the players we land are the ones we WANTED and not ones we had to settle for.

having wallace makes the defense play a guy over the top of him, dictating the defensive look almost every play. i understand that there are a lot of fast wrs in the NFL, but this guy is really fast and hes obviously a good football player because clyde gates is fast and he blows. i love the idea of going after cook and I like the gibbons kid as well. I like the brian hartline back loaded deal as well.

I just watched highlights of the best prospects available for the Dolphins, and by far Tyler Eifert should be our pick. He looks like a Big Playmaker all over the field. I would love to have him. TE is a position that is becoming more, more and more important.

Notre Dame was great all year; he was big part of it. 12 games, 685 yards, 4 tds, 6-6/251. He looks like a big fast wide receiver. PLEASE get him. Just watch youtube. Fresh eyes. Please please please!

Please no Sean Smith!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jaime now watch ertz from stanford

hoping pats sign smith so we can throw at him every play

Good perspective Mando. Makes sense. Thanks!

If they come back from FA asking for cheap money so be it. We already have too many weak spots for a single season. Also, I hope Ireland trades down to pick either Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Eiffert or DJ Fluker; we should be able to get at least an additional 3rd rounder by doing so.

Agree @ 7:23.....

kinda one of the reason I became a fan....very few people will speak TRUTH to power.....

more are concerned with selling LIES (advertisements) to the masses....

You have to respect a guy who has his own thoughts...and isn't scared to speak them....

Goodbye sweet heart good bye .......greener pastures ahead

I guess im all grown up now, tops is sign our own free agents. to me it was starks and long, how can we let a hall of fame OT rare to get unless use a top 5 pick on go in free agency, always 1 top postions need lt unless becuase we have a mobile qb. we should have put franchise tag on him given him hall of fame money he is our best player by far.
smith is nice, i like bush becuase work ethic though a scat back, when nfl going to towrds power runners, i guess they think miller is awsome.
yes im biased wanted harvin as played home town va beach home town gym flex gym, wallce only becuase its bust poston in draft

32 TDS in 63 games.

Dreaming if you think he isn't worth it.

We already backed up the truck for long once. His first contract. I say he owes us a hometown discount. A good one at that.

Hey everyone please check out my Miami Dolphins blog. I just updated a 7 round mock draft. I can use the support

One problem with Long's return, if it happens. JMartin going back to the right side where he is obviously not comfortable? Hmm...

I rather sign DeAngelo Hall than Smith. Hall is a playmaker smith is not. Or Keep smith he might learn something from a real playmaker.

Tristan, Long is a HOF'er? WOW!

Just for sh*ts n giggles, lets say he was, do you REALLY think they'd be Ok with letting him test the waters?

I don't trust Ireland as much as the next guy but, I think it's safe to assume he's making the right call in allowing him to walk away. Long is not Bruce Matthews, Anthony Munoz or Jackie Slater.

Long would be a mistake to sign for big money, the only way is full of incentive base contract with 5mil signing bonus, because we all know he will not finish the season. Or miss at least 3 to 4 games with nagging injuries. I pass on long plus he is slow when he goes up against a fast type pass rusher like our own Cameron Wake. Long is Long gone! Lol

Well, I said this yesterday here, that if Long and SS don't get what they want, they might re-sign here. Somebody here answered me, we don't want them here. I did not want to re-post at that time but I will now, you're not Ireland, man.

Hello..? Duh...That's why they sign contracts. Of course Long, Smith and the rest are not gone for sure yet. For all of you counting your chickens before they are hatched...you may want to give it another day to save yourself building up your hopes so high.

I don't believe anything I hear and only half of what I see during FA. Who's counting on Wallace and Cook and acting it's like it's a done deal?

I just want to say how tired I am of seeing Armando write the word "I" whenever reporting the news, like he's the master of digging up the great scoop. That is all.

It won't surprise if Rick Spielman out bid us on Wallace. Rick over pays for F/A plus he is closer to wining now than the PHINS. So I see Wallace probably playing for the Vikes!

Of course it was you see the US Gov. set off a hallucination inducing gas over N.Y. and DC putting the masses in an LSD like state while they (Feds in Black silent Helicopters without numbers) hit the pyrotechnics driving everybody into a frenzy.

All the while experts at Hollywood's Dreamworks studio's (Jewish owned) made the computer generated images we saw of planes crashing into buildings. The Bush Adm. did this with Isreal in order to set forth there Imperialistic agenda while green lighting Isreal's expansionist goals in the region.

How delusional are some of you! The only problem I have is I never at least got to see an image of Bin Laden's dead body so I could P I S S ALL OVER IT!!!!!!!!

One should be suspicious that so many leaks have come out saying Miami was the front runner for Wallace. It could be an intentional ploy.

Long is not Bruce Matthews, Anthony Munoz or Jackie Slater.

Really??? | March 11, 2013 at 08:17 PM

For starters the shortest career there went about 15 Yrs. Long is looking more Boselli like flash in the pan at this point and your right he's not even in the same stratosphere as those you mentioned.

Mando,

I think it's unfortunate the way the media & anonymous sources have portrayed Long & Smith for being 'guns for hire.' They don't know these guys & it sounds like bulls#t.

As a fan I continue to maintain that the issue I have with both of these players is not that they want to 'get paid' but that they're two of the most overrated players in the NFL. If you're a good, solid player then you deserve to be well compensated & there's nothing wrong with wanting to be compensated based on performance. There has not been consistent production from Smith since we drafted him & Long's body has betrayed him the last two seasons.

if your talking eifert 2nd round great. But no way with 12th overall pick for te i would be livid!

Flacco loses Anquan. Flacco has a mediocre 2013. Ozzie looks dumb for making Flacco the highst paid when he never even finished above 13 in the QBR, much of the time far below that.

Fin4life,

I don't see any reason to bring Long or Smith back regardless of the price. They're not good!!!

The Ravens placed a second round tender on Pitta! We have two second rounders, why not use one of them on Pitta, it only makes sense.

"You know we could have had Boldin for a 6th round pick and half the money that we are going to spend on Wallace.
"

We could have? Are you saiyng the Harbaugh brothers were going to give the dolphins the bother discount also?

We Need Playmakers | March 11, 2013 at 08:41 PM

AGREED! Unfortunately Jake has broken down and the other is mediocre at best.

dbmfins | March 11, 2013 at 08:42 PM

May very well be the agenda, by the way any idea on the tender for teammate Ed Dickson (Nice upside and younger than Pitta at 25)

Remember guys? When I said Reggie Bush was gone? Here's the link, remember?

Aren't I so smart? Guys?

Wallace has a slow year last year on purpose. He wasn't happy that Pittsburgh didn't offer a contract and hung a restricted on him. Knowing this season was his first and perhaps last chance at a serious contract he wasn't going to blow a knee or end up with 2 or 3 concussions. I don't blame the man, protecting his interests just as Pitt. protected they're interests.
As far as Boldin goes.... that was a brother to brother deal. And I think Ozzie just made his first really substantial error in judgement. They overpaid Flacco and it's all rolling downhill.

And to whomever trolled 9-11 being an inside job.... I wish to God myself and some other people I know who lost good friends in that Muslim Attack could get our hands around your coward azzzz throats... You perverse POS...

The CIA has come out and publicly stated they are not certain who any of those terrorists were, and all of the original names they published have been proven to not be any of the terrorists.

Lot's of unanswered questions, and Bush was in a hurry to clean up the crime scene before a full investigation could be done.

Hey let's not talk about the man who built two Super Bowl championship teams and a perennial contender for the decade in between as if we know 1/100th about football as he does, K gents?

Ozzie Newsome was asked about Joe Flacco's contract, he said that having Joe Flacco on a huge contract makes it easier, not harder, for him to build a championship team.

Ravens fans were upset when Mason, Heap, and McGahee were purged too. Forget about the 6th rounder, that's instead of getting nothing when they cut Boldin.

Oh my God, answer this nutjob - if 9/11 was an inside job, why wouldn't Osama bin Laden bring down the United States in the biggest scandal in the history of the world by saying so?

Why would he admit to it?

Post any kind of source for the nonsense you read off another nutjob's website or STFU.

Aquan Boldin is 32 and Mike Wallace is 26...

Long was the UR-mistake, the original sin of the Parcells' reign of error. Smith & Davis supposedly the manifestation of Tuna's genius idea of drafting two at the same position on purpose. Won't miss gamester Smith at all.........Long simply breaking down too often to justify his banditry.
Lordy.......how long until we're out of the Wilderness of Losing & no longer the League's laughingstock.

Trade up for Joeckl?

9/11 conspiracy theorist are dumb, uneductaed blobs.

The same uninformed idiots who voted for Obama.

Hiding behind the red white and blue is for true cowards, not what our soldiers fought for.

Open your eyes and see.

Unlike the Birther & Secret-Sharia geniuses "The truth is......" exchanges e-mails with.

Those of you, which is probably all of you, that only read government controlled American media sources are as brainwashed as the Chinese people are by their government.

Get out, look around.

Goodell should step-in & void the 49ers highway robbery of Boldin..........bogus deal to help out a brother.

Do you know who Bush Senior escorted out of the country on 9/12? Thats right, Bin laden Sr.

e Miami Dolphins went into 2012 barren at wide receiver. Chad Johnson couldn’t even make it through training camp and Brian Hartline did an admirable job during the season, but it was obvious Miami needed to upgrade the position. The Dolphins have already re-signed Hartline, they’re considered the front runners for Mike Wallace and now they’re interested in Wes Welker, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Salguero said in his column “Maybe the fact the Dolphins are willing to do more than in the past [in free agency] is a reason one club source last week mentioned his affinity for signing Wes Welker in addition to Mike Wallace.” The Dolphins traded Welker to the Patriots prior to the 2007 season. He spent two seasons with Miami. Salguero’s source said Welker would “love nothing more than to stick it to the Patriots for not retaining him” if the two sides can’t reach a deal. .

The brave American soldiers that stormed Normandy were not cowards like those of you blinded by red white and blue.
