« Ireland, Dolphins deserve praise for cap situation | Main | Starks to be Dolphins franchise player ... what that means »

Randy Starks open to giving Dolphins a discount, not wild about 'clearance' price or franchise tag

Monday at 4 p.m. (EST) is the deadline for NFL teams to apply the franchise tag to their looming unrestricted free agents. And since Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has said the team will likely use the designation and defensive tackle Randy Starks seems a logical designee, as I told you on Feb. 19, we await what seems inevitable.

Apparently Starks has gotten wind either directly from the team or other avenues that he might be a franchise tag target -- particularly since negotiations for a long-term deal haven't exactly proved fruitful.

[Update: The Dolphins do indeed plan to place the franchise tag on Starks, sources say.]

So Starks on Sunday did what NFL players in 2013 do when they have something to say.

He took to twitter.

"I want to be a Dolphin!!!" Starks tweeted with multiple exclamation points. "Not just for one more year ..."

Well, clearly it seems Starks wants to be with the team longterm and not just for the one-year franchise designation. That franchise tag would guarantee Starks up to $8.45 million for one year in exchange for the exclusive rights to him. It would also cost the Dolphins that same amount off their salary cap space. But it is effectively only a one-year deal.

And Starks wants a multi-year contract.

And on that topic the Dolphins and Starks agent Tony Paige have been discussing a deal but the sides have opposing views of what that discussion is over. The Dolphins believe they're making a solid effort to keep Starks with a good long-term offer. Starks side believes the Dolphins are trying to pay K-Mart prices for a Pro Bowl player.

Starks also says he's not adverse to giving the Dolphins a hometown discount but that has a limit.

"Discount yeah clearence rack heck no," Starks tweeted. "I want to be here and finish here!"

The thing I don't like about Patterson is I can't find many plays off of the reception. Most of his highlights consist of huge returns or bubble screens. I wish I had more to go off.

When I look at highlights of Tavon Austin or DeAndre Hopkins, I can tell they are big play WR's. I can't say the same about Patterson.

Patterson will be the first WR taken, for a reason. Give him two years and you will have a true alpha receiver.

Patterson is a bust or boom type of receiver. I'd rather buy what I know I'm getting. Austin, Hopkins, Woods and Patton look way more NFL ready at this point to me.

Guess what? Big Jakes walks and we better draft or sign suitable replacement. Loading up on point scoring recievers that the qb hasnt time to throw to crosses eachother out.

Guess what? Starks walk we become slightly easier to run against. May not sound like much, but we probably spend 1-3 more minutes per game playing defense. Which also gives chance to allow 3-7 more points per game to our opponents.

A gain, Starks walk, we better have a suitable replacement. Not a "Maybe". Odrick's a maybe.

YesterGarble

We will take that into consideration along with your other idiotic bogus proclamations.

I think YesterDick and OdinDock ought to get married :) No kids though, Puhlease!

Starks needs to be the priority, followed by Hartline.

I would even worry about Long, he is on the verge of following the broken LT trend: LT~RT~RG~UNEMPLOYED.

He isn't far behind other Dolphins like Groves, Smiley, and Columbo. Once a Lineman gets a season ending injury he is usually done.

Regarding Jake Long, you can rest assured Ireland will make the wrong decisions.

My guess is they find a way to keep Starks and Hartline. Somebody will pay big for Long, not sure about Smith but I say we move on.

Woodshed Gang,

Reports are surfacing the Jet(#9), Bills(#8), and Browns(#6) may also have interest in Patterson.

Seems the closer we get to draft day the more it seems to get Patterson we would have to move up. I dont see Ireland moving up to get him. It would be a miracle if Ireland took him at #12.

Yes, I would sure hate to lose all of that scoring punch Hartline gave us last year. We have to re4sign him at all cost!

He gets open and catches the football. That makes him better than anything else we have at WR.

That's become quite a problem with dolfans and our losing ways. We tend to now weigh mediocre as being a huge step up from mediocrity.

Too many different games, too many offensive plays, too many different tv announcers in 2012 have said:

"Not a single Miami reciever got separation on that play."

Where was Hartline when this was being said, on the bench?

Soon enough we will know what Irelands and Philbins opinion is of Hartline's value. That will supersede the opinion of any of us lowly bloggers.

Remember not even alpha receiver Brandon Marshall could catch touchdowns on this offense.

With a real #1 wr, Hartline's back to his 31-43 recs 500-600 yds 1.5 tds a year ways.

Be careful what you ask for.

Be careful what you ask for.

Yeah, didn't you ask for Teo at 12 non stop for weeks? Who is the idiot here?

Carl,

You have to remember, this isnt the same offense Marshall played in. This is the wco, which is supposed to be more reciever friendly.

YesterDunce can have 10 super idiotic opinions, but if any other person has an opinion he doesn't agree with, he ridicules them. What a shithole that guy is.

I would guess that its your mother for not saving the afterbirth and tossing you way.

Yes, and Hartline had his best season in this offense. When you pick a WR in the 4th round, you are expecting to need to develop him a few years. So do you discard him the moment he begins to play well?

I think Hartline has grit, good hands, and makes a fine #2. We will see what Philbin and Ireland think soon enough.

If you let go of Hartline, will his replacement be better in 2013?

I'm not sure Bess is effective enough. If anything I'd prefer to have Hartline in the slot. Although if we had a true alpha receiver that could make the difference for both of them. I know most of you want Wallace to stretch the field, but he is no alpha receiver, and there is plenty of speed available much cheaper in this draft. We have picks!

Gotta run now.

Wouldn't surprise me if Jeff wan't the "NFL guy) who asked that player about his sexual orientation.
Give Randy a fair deal, 4 years.

Joke Franchise.
Unqualified GM.

When will this curse end, Dear Lord?

Randy Starks may have been tagged. To be announced tomorrow. If it truly happened.

Well, we'll see. I will go prepare coffee now.

I like Starks very much, however my first priority would have been Bush he puts the ball in the endzone, and then wide receiver help, but thats of course if you would like to improve the offense and score more points that is!!!

Man , I can't decide on the tag is Starks worth 8.5 mil. , I don't think so dl are a dime a dozen

Do we really need to tag any of these guys ?

Ireland cant find star players and Ross wouldnt pay for them anyway so the stinking will continue.........

Dfins006,You are joking or on something very potent? We could live without the rest of them, but we must re-sign Jake Long? That is about the dumbest statement I have heard in a Long time. Pardon the pun! We passed on Matt Ryan, and Joe Flacco in the 2008 draft and that moron Parcells takes Long at #1,pathetic. And to make it even worse,we have paid him over 54 mil.,and you think it should be a priority to re-sign him? This team has proven one thing in the past five years,it needs play makers not more money dumped on offnsive lineman. IMO

I would wait it out and get them back on the cheap

I agree completely. Bess does a good job of finding the uncovered areas in a zone but he can't get away from a CB and he doesn't contribute as a run blocker. He shouldn't be on the field unless its a 4 WR formation IMO.

I would go all in on Mr. Wallace , and a top tight end ,then take a look from there , Finley or Martelious Bennett sounds pretty good

I've seen a lot of Finley, not impressed. He drops a lot of passes. I hope we get Bennett.

I also like Jennings more than Wallace. People question how much he has left with his age and injury. I saw a game at the end of last season where he made a phenomenal catch that answered any doubts I had. No doubt though, Wallace is the best vertical threat in football. I just think Jennings is a good vertical threat in addition to being a threat moving horizontally. He also is more willing to make a tough catch over the middle.
Honestly though, either one of those guys makes sense for us.

Tannehill will be running for his life without Big Jake.

Tanny was running for his life with Jake starting at LT. There are cheaper options who are just as capable as Jake Long at this point.

Jakes ability has dropped off big time he is a shell of what he once was , JUST SAY NO

Boy oh boy there are a lot of free agent corners on the market

They have plenty of cap room. They shouldnt lose ANY players. Stop the musical chairs!

IF THEY BRING HARTLINE BACK OUR SEASON WILL BE OVER BEFORE THE SEASON BEGIN.

WOOD:

I RATHER HAVE TAVON AUSTIN IN THE SLOT.

JENNINGS OR WALLACE ON ONE SIDE PATTERSON OR ALLEN ON THE OTHER. WITH AUSTIN IN THE SLOT.

SPEED KILLS.

A lot would have to fall our way to achieve that at wr

"Tanny was running for his life with Jake starting at LT. There are cheaper options who are just as capable as Jake Long at this point."

I've read the reports of how much Jake Long wants which is a joke. IMO--the only GM that is dumb enough to sign Long is Ireland. I'm holding out hope that Ireland is not going to cave at the last minute & sign either Long or Smith but my gut tells me Ireland will sign each player for less than they are looking for & think that he found "value."

Bottom line--I don't believe either player is worth half of what they are reportedly looking for. There are better LT's & CB's available in FA & if the price is too steep then wait for the draft but I'll be sick to my stomach if Ireland blows it again...

I believe that Austin and his pal Stedman Baily sounds more realistic

But is 12 to hight for Austin , we would need to trade back into the high teens or low 20s

I CAN't UNDERSTAND THE LOVE FOR HARTLINE AND THE HATE FOR GINN.

I DON't LIKE EITHER FOR THE SAME REASONS.

THE BOTH SUCK.

ONE RUNS OUT OF BOUNDS FASTER THAN HE CAN RUN A 40.

THE OTHER GETS TO THE GROUND FASTER THAN HE COULD BLINK.

THEY BOTH ARE JOKES.

IS IT A SURPRISE THEY COME FROM THE SAME SCHOOL AT THE SAME TIME.

YES WE NEED PLAY MAKERS

A WHOLE MAKEOVER OF PLAY MAKERS

OR SHOULD I SAY WE NEED TO START GETTING SOME CAUSE WE DON't HAVE ANY.

Tannehill had great protection when Long was in there. When Martin played LT he was a turnstyle.

AUSTIN WILL BE A SECOND ROUND PICK BECAUSE HIS SIZE.

WE STAY PUT GET PATTERSON OR REACH FOR ALLEN.

I KNOW SOME WILL SAY VALUE BUT AGAIN YOU CAN't PLACE VALUE ON SOMEONE's HEART.

TRADE UP IN THE SECOND ROUND TO GET AUSTIN.

SIMPLE.

WE WOULD BE ABLE TO GET PATTERSON AND ALLEN IF PATTERSON FELL TO 12 BUT I KNOW JEFF DON't LIKE MOVING UP.

A YEAR WE GET THE TOP TWO WRs IN THE DRAFT WOULD BE AMAZING.

A FUTURE WHITE AND JONES.

OR HARRISON AND WAYNE.

OR RICE AND TAYLOR.

BOLDIN AND FITZGERALD.

NAH YOU GUYS ARE NOT READY FOR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

YOU WANT HARTLINE.

I was hoping to sign Jennings but what he is reported to be asking for is ridiculous.
I would like us to get either Jennings or Marshall, resign Hartline and draft either Woods or Hopkins in the draft.

That would give us the ability it attack the field vertically AND Horizontally at the same time.
If we can draft a solid addition to our offensive line (Johnson or Cooper at 12, possibly Watson or Pugh later), we can have a solid offense for years to come.

bidness, you don't even know what you wrote. You said Jeff Ireland never said he would likely use the tag. I quoted Jeff Ireland's words. You are wrong, get over it.

Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 03, 2013 at 05:41 PM

Ireland didn't say he'd use the franchise tag.

He said there is a likelyhood they COULD use it.

LEARN THE DIFFERENCE!

Woodshed,

I find it very odd that Jennings is reportedly asking for more than Wallace is said to be looking for. Good luck with that.

I have no idea what Ireland's plan is this offseason. I heard what he said about needing & wanting playmakers but is that really such a profound discovery??? Every fan who watches the games can tell you that. Ireland's problem is that he hasn't been able to find playmakers.

Need a better QB if you want a better offense. Tannehll is Henne 2.0

WNPs,

Yeah I think we all get that you're not a Jake Long fan. But what's your plan to replace him? I'm not looking for multiple plans....I'm looking for THE plan. I've heard you say that you're not a fan of Martin many time on here now. So what's next? And don't tell me one of the three LTs in the draft, caue it's looking to me like all three will go top ten.

So now what? i would think Jake Long at about $7 mil year on a short long term deal, with easy buyouts, is about what I'd look at. To me that's a fair deal, will little risk. If he is in fact the guy you claim him to be, we could cut him next year and draft that LT next year. I just don't see a better plan right now. I'm open to your plan....

"League sources tell CBS' Jason La Canfora the Dolphins will likely franchise tag free agent DT Randy Starks ahead of Monday's deadline."

Wow...Do these guys get the inside scoop or what???

Jake is worth 10-12 mill/yr.
