Randy Starks open to giving Dolphins a discount, not wild about 'clearance' price or franchise tag

Monday at 4 p.m. (EST) is the deadline for NFL teams to apply the franchise tag to their looming unrestricted free agents. And since Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has said the team will likely use the designation and defensive tackle Randy Starks seems a logical designee, as I told you on Feb. 19, we await what seems inevitable.

Apparently Starks has gotten wind either directly from the team or other avenues that he might be a franchise tag target -- particularly since negotiations for a long-term deal haven't exactly proved fruitful.

[Update: The Dolphins do indeed plan to place the franchise tag on Starks, sources say.]

So Starks on Sunday did what NFL players in 2013 do when they have something to say.

He took to twitter.

"I want to be a Dolphin!!!" Starks tweeted with multiple exclamation points. "Not just for one more year ..."

Well, clearly it seems Starks wants to be with the team longterm and not just for the one-year franchise designation. That franchise tag would guarantee Starks up to $8.45 million for one year in exchange for the exclusive rights to him. It would also cost the Dolphins that same amount off their salary cap space. But it is effectively only a one-year deal.

And Starks wants a multi-year contract.

And on that topic the Dolphins and Starks agent Tony Paige have been discussing a deal but the sides have opposing views of what that discussion is over. The Dolphins believe they're making a solid effort to keep Starks with a good long-term offer. Starks side believes the Dolphins are trying to pay K-Mart prices for a Pro Bowl player.

Starks also says he's not adverse to giving the Dolphins a hometown discount but that has a limit.

"Discount yeah clearence rack heck no," Starks tweeted. "I want to be here and finish here!"

If you had read anything prior to today you would have KNOWN Newsome DID in fact try to extend him sooner.

Why, where & how the extension fell apart is spin & irrelevant.

Google the Flacco dad article. According to him, when they approached his son for an extension he was willing to roll the dice & prove he's worth more than they wanted to give him.

Whether someone believes King or Flacco's dad, it don't matter.

Bottom line is Newsome knew what he had in Flacco & for whatever reasn, Flacco didn't sign it.

These where all parcels hand picked players all of them it's time to cut the cord

Craig M....

are you serious....

who cares if a QB throws for 4000 yards...and blah..blah...blah....

only us Marino die-hards care about that crap....

here is the ONLY stat that matters when it comes to Flacco.....

5 straight years with a PLAYOFF win....many of thos comming on the road....

defeated BOTH Manning and Brady on the road.....

Has beaten Brady Multiple times in the playoffs....

TWO years in a ROW he had his team in postion to go to the SB....The other teams dropped the pass...

Abraham signed a 3 year deal for 17.5 million Starks would be a 8.5 million cap hit

Jared odrick is one big dude he can move inside no problem . Now I get it

Let's see how your 'elite' QB does next year when this team looks VERY different than it does this year. You can come back and tell me that next year.

Posted by: Craig M | March 04, 2013 at 10:48 AM

Why would I do that? I see what you're tryin to do. I'm aware of your antics. You can keep a diary of some other blogger you plan to demonize next year. My care level is not as high as yours.

the recievers dropped the passes...

not the other teams....

Kris,

Is Sanchez 'elite'? Seems to me he led his team to the AFC Championship. He loses a lot of his supporting cast and his game goes in the toilet.

Seems to me if Flacco was elite, then he would have been to a Pro Bowl or two, no? Didn't you make the argument that Pioli was a better GM than Ireland because of all the Pro Bowl players? Didn't you defend AJ Smith based on the number of Pro Bol players he'd drafted?

Do you see why I get frustrated with the inconsistencies in your arguments?

Anyone who thinks that you get the best value in a negotiation by offering the highest price you are willing to give on your first offer is a fool.

The agents and Ireland have to dance, to hassle through the negotiation. That is how negotiations work.

Think about buying a used car or a new car at a dealership. Do you open with your best price? Do they? Doing so would just make you a mark.

And GM who are marks end up overspending on players then getting into salary cap problems that kill the teams downstream.

Ireland is just doing his job.

finfan23,

And yet you make the comment, 'fact find next time, before you post'. Seems to me, you care a lot about what people post.

Craig M....

that is were you are CONFUSED....

were not arguing....

NEWSOME closed the book...there is NOTHING to argue about....

sorry....you lose this one....

Craig, nice tidbit from King and if that's the truth, Ozzie messed this up big time. Why would he be arguing over a 1 million dollar difference five years down the road that was unguranteed. That doesn't sound smart at all. So much can happen in five years and that $2M figure becomes more inconsequential the further out it is. That haggling over $1-2M in 5 years cost his cap $5M every year starting next year. That's the equivalent of one pretty good vet. Major fumble.

I no longer have confidence in Jake Long & throwing millions of dollars at him is not going to improve his play. His body is clearly breaking down & it's time to move on. At least with Martin he's younger, cheaper, & healthier.

Posted by: We Need Playmakers | March 04, 2013 at 09:42 AM

I don't care is he better? answer is a resounding no. I say keep long and draft a tackle later in the draft. Long can play, can he survive a full season is the question. Put a clause in the deal that he play at least 12 game or pay get cut. Martin looked over matched at time.

Craig M...

aren't you the guy that likes to say...

"i'll take this GMs word over you guys...or this anyalyst of you guys"...

well take Newsom's word...and the Ravens oner's money....and realize that its a done deal....

Jake Long will get his requested contract if he hits the open market. Tag and trade him then his leaving isn't a total loss. Teams will want him and we maybe get a couple of draft pick and a player.

Kris,

Let's have the conversation next year, when the Ravens aren't the same team. You're saying he's 'elite' (which was the point you started with this morning0, so I'm saying....SHOW ME.

Elite isn't doing to for one year, or you'd be claiming Dilfer was elite. So let's see him. He's the $120 mil man....let's see how he does.

Ozzie paid him what the market dictates he'd be paid. His hands were tied. Let's see if he as right.

No comments on Peyton Manning, Kris? After all you said, 'it's about the SBs'. Think he's something like 6-9 in the post-season now. Would you say he's had a mediocre career?

No comments about Sanchez?

Too many time people say a QB beat another QB. Flacco didn't beat brady and manning, that was Ray Lewis, ed reed, Paul Kruger, Terrel suggs, and etc. Don't listen to the NFL network propaganda. That Defense is the reason why they are where they are. you have to have at least a good defense or they get hot at the right to be good. Offense just have to be able to move the ball.

O'darris,

My point EXACTLY. But Kris has this belief that a guy has 'it'. He's 'the guy'. What I think Kris is missing, is the fact that it takes 53 guys to win a championship. Ozzie's one of the best in the business or maybe even the best. He's put great teams together through the draft and FA. Flacco's just a 'part' of that.

You can put in all the riders you want in Long's contract, it still is a full salary cap hit no matter what

Odarris...

that defense was not typical RAVENS D...and hasn't been for a few years now....

It was Flacco and the offense scorig 30 plus that won those games....

it might be you who is falling for the propaganda...

Starks got tagged ain't going nowhere!!!!!!!!

Sheftler reports Starks got tagged

Per Adam Sheftler: @AdamSchefter: Dolphins placed franchise tag on DT Randy Starks.

Where is bologna salesman Carl? Talking about no one will be franchised..

You can't sign big free agents and resign Long at the same time. We have seen how many wins per season Long has gotten us as the highest paid guy. Lets pay for playmakers and draft young, healthy O-linemen

11 td's 0 int's in post season along w/ sb win + sb mvp.?
but 4000 yds is more important.
lmao

wow, some uf u guys r f'ng delusional
lol

bye bye jake long, enjoy tampa, detroit or arizona

Come out bidness, tell us how Ireland said he won't be tagging anyone and how you said same thing

"bye bye jake long, enjoy tampa, detroit or arizona"

Seth,

Could also be Chicago or SD....As long as it's not Miami!!!

Thats foolish to to think. I watch the ravens since 2000 when I lived in DC. I know they where not the dominating defense of before but they where still top half and made plays. Interesting stat raven went 9-1 with Ray Lewis in the lineup and 5-5 without him in the line up (playoff included)Flacco is good but is he the reason for them winning it all. No but newsome know he has to pay his QB cause even good one are hard to find .

I like Starks but, not a fan of tagging a 29 year old with 10 years on nfl wear on him.

Dline was a strength & resigning Starks for all this money is a lil wasteful but, he's earned his payday.

He's gonna cost about 20% of our available cap if he signs just the 1 year tender. I'm pretty sure this was done with the anticpation that Soliai won't be back next year. Used the franchise on DT's consecutively. Can't afford to keep them both long term.

Lettign Starks go & sliding Odrick inside would have been a better choice imo. Save that cap money to bring in O playemakers.

Team needs 2 starting WR's, 2 starting CB's, a free safety a LT & a TE more than Starks. Giving Starks all this cash means 1 less need gets filled.

Consider the source!! 4k seasons over a sb champ.

Odarris...

Top half....

They were ranked 17th....

also...

Its one thing to PAY you're QB...its quite another to make him the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER in NFL HISTORY....

c'mon man....any argument against Flacco @ this point doesnt hold water....

Would you pay him that money if you can have a truly elite Qb Manning, brady, rogders, Eli*? Supply and demand my friend. Flacco is great but just not elite. 17th with almost every defense player hurt. (suggs, lewis, web, reed, and others) they had injuries at every level of the defense so 17 isn't a bad number.

As long as this works towards a 3-4 deal for Starks at a more cap friendly number then it's an alright move. To bad Long goes with no return except maybe a compensation pick next season.
