Travel day buffet of topics to discuss

PHOENIX -- Today is a travel day for me.

But I'm giving you plenty to chew on. If you check out my column from the NFL annual meeting, you'll see where the Dolphins stand and how they feel about a handful of intriguing players.

You'll see where Miami stands on Osi Umenyiora.

You'll see where Miami stands on Elvis Dumervil.

You'll see where Miami stands on John Abraham.

I believe it is a fairly complete roll call of the top pass rushers currently available in free agency and it shows the Dolphins want to upgrade the pressure on quarterbacks in 2013.

But there is more than one way to skin a ...  well ...  a quarterback. You'll also find out the name of a darkhorse candidate already on the roster -- other than Olivier Vernon -- the Dolphins think might become a good pass rusher based on what they saw in practice last year.

And you'll find out why such veterans as Umenyiora and others now consider the Dolphins as they wind down their careers when in the past they might not have.

You'll find out that defensive tackle remains a "want" for the Dolphins (Remember, they go by "musts," then "needs," then "wants" in the order of priority additions.)

By the way, the column doesn't mention Dwight Freeney as an option. That's not because he's not, but rather I simply forgot to ask about him. Why?

He's older than the veteran ends the Dolphins are more seriously considering. He also wasnt quite as productive last year. I suppose he should be on this list, but my gut tells me he's definitely not at the front of the line.

The column also does not discuss OT. The Dolphins have scheduled a visit with former Chiefs and former Texans right tackle Eric Winston today. First order of business is a physical for him and then he'll meet with OL coaches. He visited last year after being cut by the Texans and has multiple teams interested.

The Dolphins are looking for a tackle after losing Jake Long in free agency.

As much as I want Dee Milner, I wouldn't trade up with Oakland to get him. All these picks need to be used.

I agree with DD Pittsburgh is a fun place to see a game. Went to the worst game ever Monday night football Fins-Steelers. The sod was so wet the ball stuck in the ground on a punt. Horrible game. Lots of fun hanging at the Hilton across the river from the stadium. The Fins stayed there the night before the game and we met a couple ex-Steelers in the hotel bar.

DD thanks for the tip. I doubt I will have an actual hand in planning this trip other than getting my arse down to Pitt (the wife's cuz is from Montreal) but I will suggest.

Marlon Moore was a very good special teamer but there's only room for one specialist I guess and that's Marcus.

Alberts for a 2nd then have to pay him a boatload? Haven't we been down this path before? No thanks KC, deal with your own cap issues.

We will get a cheaper and better guy in round one or two.

Funny story I have about watching a Pitt Steelers game in Miami. It was during the hurricane that year and the game was moved and was also Big Ben's first pro start ...

Anyway, day after the game, i get up quite early and head down to the lobby of my hotel and I see Hines Ward and Duce Staley having breakfast together by themselves ... it just looked odd ... my first inclination was that these two were "Manti T'eo'ing" it ... it just seemed odd ...

no rt since todd wade.

Clarence will probably sign with Miami.

I just threw up up my mouth a little...

Thanks Mark...

Marlon Moore is gone? There goes the superbowl.

Hope we sign a pass rusher. Just another 6 or 7 sack guy to take the heat off Wake. Dumerville would be nice.

Finally a DB in the works??? Still not sold on Ireland he knew we needed all this help for the past 2 years & didn't pull the trigger till his job is on the line!!! Can't wait for the season.... BUT CAN WAIT FOR THE GIRLIE NEW LOGO.... IT SUCKS ROSS LEAVE THE OLD LOGO PLEASE!!!

Atlfin is an embarrassment to true dolfans in ATL. If we are able to sign a veteran tackle and corner, it allows us to take some risk on a player in the draft like Tyrann Mathieu. He is Janoris Jenkins on rounds and I am a Gator fan. I would love to seenusbuse one of our second round picks on him. The coaching staff and Ireland says they need playmakers. This guy is the best play making corner in the draft and would be a great nickel back.

A blog about an article you wrote. Feeling a little insecure lately?!

Who's Clarence?

Sorry Kris, but remember there is nothing wrong with it ... people always said those Super Bowl teams were tight ... apparently as tight as Spartan soldiers ...

I honestly don't know enough about Winston to have an opinion. If Philbin & the coaches think he's the answer @ RT & the money is right then I'm all for it.

If we're going to sign a pass rusher I would definitely go with Osi based on age & production. He'll turn 32 in December (which is okay) & in nine seasons he has 75 sacks & 32 forced fumbles. With that type of impact through the years I think it's crazy that he's still on the market. If we can get him on a one year or two year deal--he could be a great addition.

I haven't seen where Clarence is even scheduled for a visit be he would be interesting.

Buffet of Topics....

Similar to a Buffet of Knowledge?

mike, love these know nothing fans like you, who haven't seen the player play and have a strong opinion about them. Mike how would you ever know that Kaddu can't play. Really how do you know. How have you evaluated him.

”; is “excited” about safety Kelcie McCray, who missed all last year with a foot injury after impressing in minicamps; loves new receiver Brandon Gibson ("runs routes effectively,... moves the chains" and “played a little bigger than he is" at 6-0"); acorns

They have said that they are addressing all of their needs in FA, that way they can bring in and develope players through the draft.
Build a base and add to it.. We didnt have a solid base so we had to add people to it..

2 Watt,

Why don't you just change your name to 'twatt' b/c it's more apropos. The only thing I've ever seen you post on this blog is a complaint about Ireland. Are you even a Dolphin fan?

WNP, Winston graded out ok. I'm sure we can put him at RT and not worry about him.

As far as Osi goes, do you live in NY/see a lot of Giants games?

When I was at MetLife last year the general consensus on Osi is that the engine is burnt out. Just doesn't have the burst anymore. Maybe this is relieved if he's a part time player??? I think he's on the market because he's just not the same guy anymore.

I honestly thought Abraham would be the guy considering his production at an advanced age but injuries have taken a toll on him.

shut up wnp.

"They have said that they are addressing all of their needs in FA, that way they can bring in and develope players through the draft.

Matty,

I never thought Ireland was going to be this active in FA.

stupid out of touch out of towners.
lol

Mark,

Like I said--I'm not in a position to evaluate Winston. Fortunately I didn't have to endure watching the Chiefs play last year.

As for the Giants...Yes, I watch every one of their games. If you're asking me if Osi is the same player he was in 2010 when he was a 16 game starter & had 11.5 sacks & 10 forced fumbles--then the answer is no. However he can still be a very good situational pass rusher & with question marks regarding Odrick's speed & with question marks regarding Vernon's youth & inexperience--the addition certainly couldn't hurt.

stupid out of touch out of towners.
lol

Twatt,

As long as you know what's going on...

WNP,
Yeah but it seems that once his hands were not tied by BP both from a hand picking to a dead money aspect he has molded to what he needs to be.. thats good in a maanger as they know times andt hings change

Great Post Mando, Craig Will Be Happy.

Buffet? Are You Trying To Tell us Something? Never mind.

If The Dolphins Can Address The OT Position Before The Draft!! Dashi Will Be Good.

Kaddu? Does That Mean Misi Is In Trouble? Last I Checked Kaddu Was A 230lb OLB That Needed To Bulk Up!!

3 New LB's Starting? Dashi Can Only Hope!!

To The Clown Saying The Fins Need To Draft A Qb!! Do You Realize The Fins Have The #2 And #3 Qb In The Division!! Even The Pat's Need To Draft Another Qb Before We Do!!

While We At It?

How Many Qb's Has Belichek Drafted In The Last 5 Years? How Many Of Them Are Productive?

But Please Keep Saying How The Pats Draft Better.

WNP, on a team friendly, part time role, perhaps .. why not?

Dashi- Agreed. Dumb comment from the guy saying that the Fins need to draft a QB. HELLO?? We're trying to build AROUND our first round QB. Can we give the guy a team first, and then evaluate the position after that? Some people make me laugh.

But do me a favor, don't go after the Pats. They have been head an shoulders about our crappy organization for over a decade. They may not necessarily draft better, but they sure as hell find a way to put together a competitive team year after year. As a Fins fan, I can only envy their Front Office and wish we could be more like them. And they did draft their future QB in Mallet, remember? I don;t think they have much of a need to draft a QB at this point.

Pats Draft

2008- 1 Player Still On Team
2009- Zero Players Still On Team
2010- 4 Players Still On Team(12 Picks That Year)
2011- 2 Starters, About Only 4 Players Still On The Team
2012- 2 Players

Please Explain How The Pats Have Been So Successful At Drafting When They Have Had Over 60+ Picks The Last 5 Years And Only Got 7-9 Players.

Multiple CB's Drafted High And Didn't Pan Out!! Multiple Wr's Drafted High And Didn't Pan Out!! Multiple Qb's Drafted!! And Didn't Work!!

Wow, I love it when I miss the Dolphins news for a couple days and hear that they are still looking to upgrade at DE with Osi, improve the secondary with Grimes (and hopefully anohter vet like Woodson) and fill the OL hole with Winston.

So glad Ireland and Company are not asleep at the wheel like they were in the past. Funny what job security drives people to do. Never thought I'd say this but go get 'em Jeff!

To the idiot who said TE is not a need, kill yourself. Yes adding Keller was nice but he can not block, neither can Clay, at least not at the level Fasano did. TE remains a must, if Clay will be your full time HBack and Keller's backup, good luck with that. Besides Keller himself has been injury prone, imagine if he goes down. The ship will sink.

We are waiting to see what Green Bay does with Finley, if he stays then no TE will be picked in the 1st round and we can either trade up in the 2nd for Eiffert (the best TE w/o a doubt) or pick Ertz later in the same round.

Dashi...

ofcourse he is trying to tell us something....

that's why the battle cry is "ASK ARMANDO"....

Do You Believe Mallet Is The Answer?

Or Is BB Trying To Pull An Andy Reid?

And Before Someone Goes And Says What About Ireland's Draft?

At Least Most Of Ireland's Players Are Still In The NFL!! Spo Was Just A Horrendous Coach. Check More Than Half The Players BB Drafted In The Last 5 Years Are Out of The NFL!! And He Has Had His System In NE For Over A Decade.

I'm Not Going After The Pat's!! Dashi Is Just Taking Away Some Of That Luster They Have!! The Pat's Haven't Won Anything Since Belichek Had A Veteran Defense!! Parcells Left Him With!!

These Are The Facts.

The End Near For The Pats'!!

The Fins Are Just Beginning!!

None of you are in any position to 'evaluate' ANY player. I mean, seriously. Do you have any idea how ridiculousy delusional that sounds to (most) people?

And no, being in a certain city does NOT give you any added 'insight' into a player. It's just an excuse to fabricate some imagined extra level of knowledge that in truth doesn't exist at all.

Your connection to the NFL will never be more than the TV set you watch it on from the couch. You will never be in a meeting room, you will never be part of a decision making process, and no player or coach will ever confide in you.

Let's be honest about that for once here.

WOO HOO NO MORE TOM BRADY TUCK RULE!!!

Dashi- Not really in the mood to argue with you, but you can take all of the BS about the Pats draft and throw it out the window. They consistently bring in a great mix of FA vets and draft picks every year.

Guys like Gronkowski and Hernandez and unknowns like Ridley... and FA's like, uhhh, Wes Welker.

Here's the bottom line:
Since Bill Belichick was hired as the team’s head coach in 2000, the Patriots have finished first or second in the AFC East every year except Belichick’s first season, with both second place finishes caused by tiebreakers. Over that time, they have won three Super Bowls, five AFC Championship Games, and nine AFC East titles, while amassing a regular season record of 137–53.

Feeling stupid yet?

Dashi...

that is NOT breaking news....

its been 10 years man....it had to end sometime....

The safe money is they are closer to the end then the beginning...

Players get old...coaches get burned out...

lol @ 1:23....

1:22. tell that 2 the raiders.
lol

Vegas,

Was Ireland Asleep At The Wheel?

Or He Had A Terrible Co-Pilot Giving Him Directions!!

Best Move Ireland Has Done As A GM Is Hire Philbin And Co.

Philbin Brings Integrity And Intelligence To The Table.

My Favorite Comment Of Philbin Is "The Guy Looks Like A Football Player"

Agreed!! Some Guys Just Look Like Football Players On The Field!! You Can See The Heart And Athletic Ability. You Can See If A Guy Catches The Ball Naturally!! If The Player Is Stiff Or Fluid With His Motions!!

Spo Couldn't Tell The Difference Between A Football Player And A Workout Warrior!!

Philbin Knows What A Football Player Looks Like!! Mike Sherman Definitely Knows What A Football Player Looks Like!! Sherman Recruited A lot Of These Draft Picks Out Of HS!!

"Jim Jensen" No doubt you are right and I recognize that but even if it's true you could be less snarky about bit.

But, yeah, I see a lot of gasbags here too. lol

It really has been a great off season. Would still like to see a CB an obviously an OT in free agency. I'm not so worried about an over the hill DE. Would like Dumervil bit not at what it would probably cost to get him.

I really like the BPA approach in the draft, unfortunatley that could be a guard though. There are a couple of interestly DE's that could be there but I don't know if they just scream beast.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to find another way to refer to Sparano than 'Spo.'

When people in Miami hear 'Spo' they think of Eric Spoelstra, the championship Heat coach---not Tony Sparano the misplaced deli-counter worker.

Kris,

All Dashi Is Saying People Think Bellichek Is A Mastermind And Drafts And Picks Up FA's Like Nothing!!

The Guy Hasn't Picked Up Anybody Consistently Since Pioli Left!!

I Said It The Other Day. Belichek Is Burning Out!! And I'm Enjoying Every Minute Of It!!

Vegas,

Wes Welker A FA Now?

And That Is 1 FA.

What About The Other 4wr's He Signed Last Year? Or The Year Before?

Fat Albert?

A.Thomas?

And Many Others!!

S.S. Brady Is Sinking And They Don't Even Have A Life Raft!!

Belichek Will Retire The Same Time As Brady!!

Belichek Is Burning Himself Out!!

Dummerville wold be an awesome addition here don't think Ireland or Ross have the nuts to pull it off!!! Need to get a CB!!!

DUMERVIL... pardon my spelling, still need a CB!!!

Craig M
I know for you don,t make sence to draft a Qb, but we have many picks so we can waste one and hope for a good one.
Just me

it's rileys' b-day heatfan.

Well Kris,

The NFL has now passed the new helmet rule, regarding running backs.

Actually, the new rule refers to runners, but will surely affect rb,s most of all.

heatfan, unbeknown 2 all of the out of touch out of towners,
riley is the 1 making all of these deals 4 the dolphinz.
lol

I Hate Both Spo's Just The Same!!(Ask Anybody)

I Find Them Both Equally Incompetent!!

Spo' The Heat One!! Finally Has The Heat Playing To Their True Potential!! After 3 Years With The Big 3!! Plus, He Should've Won The First Title!! He Got Out coached By R.Carlisle!!

If Spo Doesn't Win The Title!! This Season Is A Failure!!

A 20+ Game Win Streak!! Anybody Can Do That!! T-Mac Did It A Couple Years Ago!! By Himself With 11 Scrubs!! No Big 3!! No Yao Ming!!

The Heat Have Had A Squad To Go 72-10!! The Last 3 Years!!

Spo' Is Slo'!!

And Gay!! Don't Believe The Hype!!

Former Heat Dancer? How Convenient!!

Add That She Lives In California!! And We Have Another Te'o Situation!!

Signal...

It passed....

I heard this morning on the radio they wern't even going to vote on it...

I got to check this out....

Dashi, you're part right/part wrong on the Belichick stuff.

The Patriots drafts actually HAVE been completely average for years now. Some great finds, to be sure, but also just as many misses as any other team out there.

As for Pioli, VERY hard to say he's some kind of personnell 'guru' after the years in KC--which he left a total mess after some absolutely ludicrous decisions liken hitching their wagon to Matt Cassel.

There aren't any true geniuses out there. A lot of it really IS pure, dumb luck...like having Tom Brady fall from the sky.

But back to Belichick for a moment. Where do you see ANY evidence of him 'burning out?' I don't. I see a guy with the emotional makeup (and personality) of a log. He's about the LAST guy I'd classify as being a candidate for 'burn out' as much as I can't stand him.

Definitely could see him hanging it up around the same time Brady does, but that would be simply capping a long and hugely successful career rather than any 'burn out' issue. This isn't Dick Vermeil. Hell, my toaster shows more emotion than BB.

Kris,

Here's a snippet of what Mike Mayock thinks of it...

Mayock said he believes the NFL’s owners dramatically altered the sport of football today.

“I’m not a fan of this rule at all. I think it crosses a line. We all love safety, but at some point, football’s got to be football,” Mayock said. “If a running back can’t drop his pad level, I don’t think it’s football anymore.”

wow....

sad....

Not sure the helmet rule is as big of a deal as it is being made out to be.

There was a piece on ESPN about it, I believe there would have been 5 calls last year if it had been a rule. Only two would have been on RBs, the other 3 on defensive players. More to keep people from spearing forward with their head.
