Update on TE Dustin Keller

The Dolphins "missed" on tight end Jared Cook on Tuesday, if you call not wanting to pay $7 million per year to a player who had exactly three receptions more than Anthony Fasano a miss. Alright, I understand the infatuation with Cook but that sure is a lot of money for speed and seam-threat potential.

The Dolphins thought they had Cook at one point the past three days, I'm told. Then the Rams put on the full-court press, which is defined as money, money, money.

Fine, the Dolphins are moving on.

Today, Dustin Keller is visiting with the team, as I reported this morning. Well, more specifically the club plans to give Keller its own kind of full-court press. There will be meetings with coaches, dining with club personnel, and the physical.

The physical, which I'm told was taking place this afternoon, is key. Keller missed a lot of games last year with hamstring and ankle injuries. He had, however, played 64 consecutive games prior to that.

So the thinking here is if Keller is healthy and his physical checks out, then the Dolphins and his agent will be able to begin discussing contract terms.

The Dolphins are also expecting a visit today from wide receiver Brandon Gibson, late of the Rams. Gibson visited the Jets Wednesday morning but left town without a contract. He was flying to South Florida to visit Miami next, according to various New York media reports.

[Update: The New York Daily News is reporting Gibson is staying overnight. I'm reporting that barring a deal, he will fly to South Florida Thursday. He is also scheduled to visit Tennesee.]

Keller, by the way, has shown an ability to be quarterback friendly -- that is, he finds a way to be in place to get his quarterback out of a tough situation. No, he's not running a 4.49 in the 40 like Cook or maybe Vernon Davis. No, he's not going to block out the sun.

But he's efficient. He's been solid. He's played in big games, including two AFC Championship games. He would help Miami's cause if the Dolphins pull the trigger.

What will it cost?

A lot less than $7 million per season. Maybe half that.

If Gibson, then no need to draft a WR, the Fins will go CB , DE, could they be targeting the Bama RB, Lacy?

Please Explain How The Fins are Going To Score Less This Year Without Reggie?

'78, well, I ALWAYS miss my Dolphin talk here in TN, even when it gets a bit contentious.
BTW, I won't cry if we sign Keller at a fair dinkum price. Great experience, good hands, and might be able to help Clay, assuming Clay stays.
It's been daamn exciting so far.

Seems like Yesterdays gone 4 ever took exception, Kris

Okay Aloco is being stupid on purpose, I'm out, enjoy the night people.

Chuck Dowdle, ignore this moron. He wil get hit by a bus shortly.

PHIN78,WHAT WILL YOU BE HAVING FOR DINNER TONIGHT?
I'LL BE HAVING FELLIT MIGNON WITH CREAMY CAJUN SAUCE. WITH A BOTTLE OF MERLOT.

Ireland Can you Just Sign Long Already!!

Would Love To Go Into The Draft With Less Needs Than The Patriots!!

After Wallace I'm going wtf? Why LBs? The need was CBs (plural), TE (now 2 with Fasano leaving), OT & RB (after Bush).

But after cuts & money, I'm good with it. It was an upgrade without digging a hole money wise. I did not like the LACK of penetration from the D-line which is SUPPOSED to be the stength of the D but maybe the new LBs can help.

Probably good that Cook got away. Not exactly a Gronkowski but still after Fasanso....big hole. What's next?

What about CB(s)? I wouldn't care if Smith ever seen the inside of Davie again. But still, what do you do? Looking at the cap, maybe rooks.

Anything more on Eric Winston, former Cane?

Re-Post:

Fasano walked and there's just no sure things in the draft. So read the writing on the wall. Ireland **HAS** to address the Tight End position with Free Agency. We have no starters on the roster and the top two(or 3, or 4, etc, etc...) in the draft are no sure things either.

I think it's obvious that he'll try and draft a Tight End high in the draft. But with Egnew(and the other "Has Beens")as the only Tight End(s) under contract, **WE HAVE TO FIND** a legitimate starter **IN FREE AGENCY**

The writing on the wall says it's Dustin Keller as the reasonably priced - "Stop-Gap Instant Starter" - insurance policy.

When you look at Keller "Objectively", He's Fasano 2.0. He's big enough and experienced enough to get down and dirty blocking up front. He also has great hands. The big difference is that Keller can motor COMPARED to Fasano. Keller can get separation and he has enough speed to challenge Linebackers and Safeties down the seam.

It might not be Keller, but at this point, I don't see any other alternatives. You bet I'm hoping we get one of the top Tight Ends in this years draft. But realistically speaking, none of them give any indications of being able to handle starting Day 1.

As uninspiring as Fasano has been, I say Ireland "Hamstrung Himself" by letting him get away. I predict he'll be forced to do one of two things.

The obvious: Sign one of the Free Agents.

His second option is more intriquing: Trade for a Tight End. Maybe a guy he has some inside knowledge of..........?

Either way, I GUARANTEE YOU that Ireland will be forced to address the position prior to the draft.

There! I've said my peace! Other than THAT:

A **ValHalla** to you Jeffy Ireland! You've earned one TODAY!!!!

@6:39.

Darlington Said Be Pleasantly Surprised With The Fins Draft.

Drafting A REAL RB LIKE E.LACY!! Will Be A Steal At #12!!

The Guy Basically Made Te'o His B'tch In The Title Game!!

John @ 6:37, the Greatest show on Turf had an MVP at QB. Tanny hasn't proven he's all that yet, not by a long shot.
There can be no excuses for anything less than 20 TD's through the air 2013.
That's only a wee bit over 1 TD per game.

I hope ireland can rise above our criticism (which he deserves) @nd keep his job....cuz itll mean je finally fielded a winner. And was the architect of it himself. Wouldnt that be something? I could stop casing his house looking for opportunities to cause him the suffering hes caused us. (just kidding) but seriously. .....mow your lawn jeff.

hope that isnt true rick

bobbyd12 @ 6:40:

Thanks for the advice but I'm am unclear as to which moron I should ignore & who will be hit by a bus soon.

Nevertheless, it's good to know someone on this blog has my back as a I reveal the nightmare that is FA-2013.

Ciao!

Does anyone know what the "Dolphins" think of Richard Marshall? I don't mean your own opinion but the Dolphins.

He was our biggest free agent signing last year (of course thats not saying much) and they were high on him. He only played a few games before his injury. They may still be thinking he could be a solid #2 starter once healthy.

Bessi excels against zone defense. That's exactly what teams will have to play to have chance to stop the offense Philbin is envisioning. Keep Bess!

MR.ODIN,HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING THE HISTORYS CHANNEL "VIKINGS"?

BUFFT OF KNOWLEDGE

better hope not rick, that would be a disaster

There are some talented DB's in the draft, and a boatload still on the FA market. Lot's of decisions to ponder at #12. If we don't resign Long or get Eric Winston, then OL probably becomes the pick. What is the point of getting all these expensive toys, if Tannehill doesn't have time to deliver the ball. Look at what happened to Michael Vick last year, great receiving corp. but had to run for his life everytime he dropped back to make a pass.

Keller's agent is in a good position to barter for the higher end of his client's wporth, now that Fasano signed elsewhere, and Cook is unavailable..

...but I think Jeff (never-more the ballboy) has to get it done..

Jamie Dukes is ridiculus. They shouldn't allow some people to talk on tv. "The Dolphins probably overpaid for Wallace blah blah blah".

"Boldin and Welker together cost the same as Wallace blah blah blah" Their both slot recievers you pinhead.

boldin not a slot rec course we overpaid for wallace, but who cares we got him

IS THE DENTEST DOING KELLERS PHYSICAL THE SAME DENTEST THAT CHECKED THE GUY THAT HAD A BROKEN NECK LAST YEAR?

BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE

We'll see if ol Incarcerated Bob gets it right this time. He's reporting Amendola to the Pats. Or at least IBN Sports Wrap is.

...if Ireland lands a viable TE (likely Keller) and then Gibson...he fills the receiver corp needs with upgrades in every case, and still has enough cap space to sign Eric Winston (if the plan is to plug Winston into RT spot, and let Martin get a full camp under his belt at LT)..

...then free to draft an OT along with CB, DE, RB and another TE....

....nice coupe de etat if he can make it...

Rick, don't expect much in a positive vibe when it comes to the Fins. When the Eagles paid $15 million a season for that CB with the unpronounceable name (who was just cut) the Eastern press gushed that the eagles sca-rewed the Raiders.

Wait till draft day 2, when ESPN conveniently goes to commercial every time the Fins announce their pick.

we traded THE OVER PAID PLAYER ,DANSBT FOR WALLACE FOR 17 MILLION MORE................

13 MIILION A YEAR ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ALMOST LIKE 12 % OF THE TEAM'S BUDGET .......

THE
CELLAR

reed to texans or colts

I can't stand Jamie Dukes, (Former Bill) and always has something unpleasant to say about the Dolphins. Wallace is a stretch the field, deep threat WR. He will force teams to keep the safety out of the box, and opens up all the underneath stuff for our slot guys, and Hartline. Doesn't matter how many times you catch the ball, when you make everyone else on the field more dangerous.

"Danny Amendola to the Patriots is a done deal" According to the source, the Rams are "still in it" but says that "the Patriots are expected to outbid the Rams out of their range of spending"

Can we still afford a Te and either long or a corner in FA?

As a UM grad, Reed is THE man, but it looks like Jeff is getting us younger, for the most part. Besides, wouldn't we need a cover corner (I mean a REAL one) when Smith is signed by (hopefully) DA RAIDAHS!
Or the Eagles, who now need a corner badly.

Coup d'etat

Well I guess we need to do a little winning and then they'll want to jump on the bandwagon.

I have seen more stories in the last couple of days with Dolphins and playoffs mentioned in the same sentence than I have in a long time.

imawriter ur problem is your one of the few left who actually watch espn

DASHI,

YOU NEED TO GO TO SLEEP....

will suck if pats get amendola , kid is a gamer and damn good

My guess is Smith is having trouble finding interested suitors at his self-inflated price tag....

DUSTY,

BEING IN THE PLAYOFFS.DOESN'T MEAN YOU R A GREAT TEAM,....

damn rick more bad news from u, amendola will be a huge thorn in our sides just like welker was. pats just replace guys so easily its sick

imawriter ur problem is your one of the few left who actually watch espn

Ahahaha. Guilty as charged. Had to give up the NFL Network package for now. I'll pretend I'm leaving comcast, and they'll give it back to me in July!

Is Jim Morrison In NE?

Cause This Is The End!! Of The Patriots Legacy!!

Posted by: josh | March 13, 2013 at 07:02 PM

I think so Josh because if we sign another corner there will probably be more cutting going on.

I think Patterson and Marshall are costing us 8.5 million against the cap.

@ Aloco...well since we've only been there like once in the last decade, could we maybe aspire to that first?

DANNY TO THE PATS,WHILE OUR GARAGE MANAGER IS HAPPY TO GET WALLACE FOR 65 MILLION...........

THE
CELLAR ..

Aloco/Oscar,

Please Tell Us How You Have Been Working For The Herald The Past 20-25 Years.

@ Dashi...yah thanks...that's what I meant...

Well it definitely looks like the Dolphins will be addressing the defense in the draft. As Dolfans, we all have a lot to be excited about this season. Moreover, when talking about closing the gap between the Dolphins and Patriots, the Dolphins additions coupled with the Patriots losses certainly narrows the gap, though will have to wait till the two teams play to determine how narrow this gap is now.

...so shoot me for a couple extra e's

DASHI,

THE ABILITY OF OUR GARAGE MANAGER TO SIGN AND OVER PAY OUR MONEY IS AMAZING ............

DANSBY ...48 MILLION CONTRACT WAS SIGNED BY OUR GARAGE MANAGER...

WALLACE WAS SIGNED BT OUR GARAGE MANAGER FOR 13 MILLION A YEAR .........

THE
CELLAR.....

Dusty/Rick, I believe the LB (IMO) upgrade speed wise will somewhat neutralize the Amendola thing. Pass rush improved, and coverage hopefully improved.
I'd love to get a guy in the draft that would be our Dwight Freeney. Has anyone signed the REAL Freeney as yet?

I'm hoping Olivier Vernon gets to the next level.

Dansby was so good he is still unemployed.

Amendola is fragile, hasn't played a full 16 game season in his entire carrier. Not worried about Amendola.

who the pats lose? amendola younger and cheaper. but damn good. so who else they lose?

dusty,

Although Amendola is a good player,he's also very very injury prone. I think i read somewhere that he's missed a whopping 20 games the past 2 seasons.

I'd be more concerned if the Patriots drafted Tavon Austin.

DASHI,

DO YOU HAVE A JOB ?

Buster,

No Problem.

Dashi Doesn't Mind Keeping His #1 Fan(aloco and His Aliases) In Check.

Wait For His Mini DaShe Rant.

The Guy Calls Me A She, But He Is The One That Acts Like A Little B'tch!!

To Buster at 6:59: What your proposing would have me masturbating in front of my tv on draft day. The possibilities of what we could do would be sick. And im indifferent about gibson/bess, but being able to attack the draft from that position would be great. We would still have needs to fill but if jeff and joe nail the draft were in tha afc championship game in two years. I believe in tannehills arm that much.
