Update on TE Dustin Keller

The Dolphins "missed" on tight end Jared Cook on Tuesday, if you call not wanting to pay $7 million per year to a player who had exactly three receptions more than Anthony Fasano a miss. Alright, I understand the infatuation with Cook but that sure is a lot of money for speed and seam-threat potential.

The Dolphins thought they had Cook at one point the past three days, I'm told. Then the Rams put on the full-court press, which is defined as money, money, money.

Fine, the Dolphins are moving on.

Today, Dustin Keller is visiting with the team, as I reported this morning. Well, more specifically the club plans to give Keller its own kind of full-court press. There will be meetings with coaches, dining with club personnel, and the physical.

The physical, which I'm told was taking place this afternoon, is key. Keller missed a lot of games last year with hamstring and ankle injuries. He had, however, played 64 consecutive games prior to that.

So the thinking here is if Keller is healthy and his physical checks out, then the Dolphins and his agent will be able to begin discussing contract terms.

The Dolphins are also expecting a visit today from wide receiver Brandon Gibson, late of the Rams. Gibson visited the Jets Wednesday morning but left town without a contract. He was flying to South Florida to visit Miami next, according to various New York media reports.

[Update: The New York Daily News is reporting Gibson is staying overnight. I'm reporting that barring a deal, he will fly to South Florida Thursday. He is also scheduled to visit Tennesee.]

Keller, by the way, has shown an ability to be quarterback friendly -- that is, he finds a way to be in place to get his quarterback out of a tough situation. No, he's not running a 4.49 in the 40 like Cook or maybe Vernon Davis. No, he's not going to block out the sun.

But he's efficient. He's been solid. He's played in big games, including two AFC Championship games. He would help Miami's cause if the Dolphins pull the trigger.

What will it cost?

A lot less than $7 million per season. Maybe half that.

Cromarti just signed with Denver for 4 million. That probably just hurt a bunch of CB's. Shawn just lost a ton of money.

And Back to Earth they fall.

Read on PFT that Pollard is a locker room problem and with Ed Reed staged some kind of mutiny in the Ravens locker room during the season and was why he's been cut from 3 teams in his career. Don't think Pollard would be Philbin's kind of guy.

You people who obsess over this stuff are creepy.

Agreed.

Ireland Did Some Work On Day 1.

The Long Situation Is Getting Out Of Hand!!

El Jeffrey Knows Ireland Is Still Saving Space For Jake On The Roster. To See What He Decides. Because So Many Left Tackles Are Out There.

"Allegedly" The Number The Rams Are Throwing Out Is $9Mil. Don't Know The Years Yet?

Ireland Is Supposedly Giving Jake His Same Rookie Contract. 5yr/57.75. With Less Guaranteed. You Know Because Of The Injury. But Whenever Jake Wants, Dolphin One Will Be In The Air To Take Him Away From That Hell Hole. Red Eye To South Beach!!

S.Smith Is Someone No One Has Talked About. Not Even In Miami. Wonder If Ireland Just Offered Him A 2yr/$8mil Deal.

Think Grimes should be priority then although I would love for us to be the mystery team in the Revis trade. We will have to pay out the poop shooter for them to trade him in the division, but why not? Rolleth Thy Dice Jeffrey!

I'm not sure Long would retain his spot as our LT. With the injuries piled up on his left arm it might be wise to move him to the opposite side so he reaches out with his right arm instead of his left. That would also help utilize his strength as a run blocker.

E.Lacy Is A Beast!!

If El Jeffrey Is Picking Somebody #12 Overall. And Have My Pick Because Ireland Fixed The Needs Thru The Draft!! And Still Have To Replace Reggie F. Bush!!

El Jeffrey Is Picking The Guy That Was The Alabama Offense!!

E.Lacy Even Struck Fear Into Opposing Offenses!!

(You Can Actually Do That Ask Adrian Peterson!!)

4 Wide With Jake Back!! And A New RG!!

T-Sizzle And Eddie Lacy!!

You Can Still Run The Ball!!

L.Miller And D.Thomas Can Still Be Thunder & Lightning!! Ed Lacy Is Cat 5 Hurricane!!

Allegedly Ed Lacy Raped Te'o!!

Everyone Saw It.

For that wouldn't u rather have Winston, who's a natural right tackle? That would be a tough decision for me. When healthy, I like Jake. We easily forget how easy 3Rd and 1 or 4get n 1 seemed pounding it right behind Jake n Incognito.

I've been thinking about what we could do in the draft. Not one to try and project players but when I look at our picks I see trade up. The fifth year in a first round contract is a big deal.

We could use the late 2nd to move up in the first. Then we could use the early 2nd and early 3rd to move into the end of the 1st.

That would leave us with two 1st rounders and a 3rd.

When you look at the actual holes left I see no reason why that can't be the direction we go. Get up around the top 5 and get the guy Ireland is convinced on and find another steal at the end of the 1st.

I really believe this is close to what Darlington was reporting on hearing about.

You arent going to replace Long with anyone better. And losing both Long and Bush would mean the O is goin backward.

If we go top 5 it's got to be a tackle to rpl Jake or Millner, the best CV at our biggest position of need. If we can snag Lacy, Eiffert, or Austin with the late first.....killer!

Losing Long and Bush mean change and nothing more. Bush had two years to show he was special and I think we can all agree he had his moments but not to a point that he should be signed until the age of 32.

Long is looking to pay his ego. He caught some bad luck here after his strong early showing but our stance is perfectly correct. Offer based on recent history and if the offer isn't good enough then spend the money elsewhere.

Continuity and familiarity go a long way and if he or Smith wait to establish a stronger market then both may return for a lot less then they expected. My guess is either could be back on a one year deal for 8 million. Maybe a little less for Smith.

I thought Ireland was already hired.

Cox 4/20 10 guaranteed to Chargers. DRC 1/4

I bet Smith comes back short term. 2/12 7 guaranteed sounds right based on those two deals.

I thought Ireland was already hired.

More like save our franchise. Dude has done a solid job. Can't wait until we start crazy strong and he gets an extension.

Tranh Ho Vanh Minh! Sai Tien Mu Viet Banh!

LA TUYA! (por si acaso)

How Ireland keeps his job is mind boggling. Performance is clearly not required of him.

Jeff Ireland= best Dolphins GM since Jimmy! Haters goooonnaaaa haaaaaate!

THANK GOD IRELAND FINALLY PICKED GOOD FREE AGENTS.
AFTER OVER 25 FAILURES, ITS ABOUT TIME HE DID SOMETHING RIGHT.
BUT EVEN A BROKEN CLOCK IS RIGH TWICE A DAY.

Atleast the front office is willing to over pay to get what they want. You will never hear of Dolphins signing players at reasonable prices.

Brady improves his lot by 20% approx.

Won't miss Welker in the East.

The corner market seems to be around 4 or 5 million a year. Maybe 6 since the best ones haven't signed yet imo. The team can probably realistically get a cb, tackle, and keller still and still have cap space especially if they cut Carpenter and Patterson.

Then they can go BPA in the draft.

Dolphins should give up a second to get Sam Shields. Forget Dustin. Get Biggers. Draft CB and TE. End of story.

El wiener man Canosa, please enlighten the blog, as you are a buffett of balogna sandwiches.

1. sign TE Keller. draft TE in 2 or 3 rd.
2. sign RT Winston.draft OG warmack or cooper @ 12
3. sign CB Talib. draft WR in 2 or 3 rd
FA done. draft DB Mathieu in rd 3.
draft best available on board for 4.4,5,7,7.

RT17 can't develop if OLine is not secure. Long should not be resigned(health). Winston was in zone scheme in Houston, warmack or cooper would solidify OL around Pouncey. Mathieu is a playmaker we need.

Spit Or Swallow?
))

I LIKE THE POSSIBLE KELLER SIGNING BUT AS FAR AS GETTING RID OF BESS? BAD IDEA! DO NOT HELP NE! IF BESS IS RELEASED NE WILL GRAB HIM IN A HEART BEAT AND NOW WE HAVE THE WELKER FACTOR ALL OVER AGAIN!! BESS HAS PRODUCED WITH SUB PAR QB TALENT IN THIS LEAGUE! WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK HE WOULD DO IN NE WITH BRADY? WE WOULD HAVE A TERRIBLE TIME TRYING TO COVER HIM! DO NOT SCREW THIS FA THING UP BY GETTING RID OF BESS!! AS YOU CAN SEE NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERYONE IS IN LOVE WITH REGGIE BUSH AGAIN! WHY? BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT HE WILL THRIVE WITH A DEEP THREAT RECEIVER ON THE FIELD! THIS LOVE FOR MILLER IS OKAY BUT WHO DO WE HAVE AS HIS BACKUP? MR "STAY HURT" THOMAS? C'MON! GTFO. IF THE TREND IS TO CONTINUE TO GET YOUNGER THAN YOUR CHOICE SHOULD BE AUSTIN IF KELLER SIGNS! THIS WAY NEXT YEAR HE IS READY TO TAKE BESS SPOT! IF THIS OFFENSE IS EXPLOSIVE IT WILL MAKE DEFENSE MORE EASY TO PREPARE BECAUSE YOU KNOW THEY WILL HAVE TO THROW TO KEEP UP AND STARKS AND SOLAI ARE TWO OF NFL 'S BEST AGAINST THE RUN. SIGN KELLER, SIGN TALIG, AND DRAFT AUSTIN AND A DE THEN DB AND OL. TAKE TALIG AWAY FROM NE AND THEY WILL BE A WEAKER TEAM SINCE LOSING CHUNG AT SAFETY! DO NOT GET RID OF BESS UNLESS THE PLAN IS TO DRAFT AUSTIN AT#12, USE THE THAT GIBSON MONEY TO DRAFT A DB OR TWO. GET TALIB AND CUT MARSHALL! DO NOT GET RID OF ANYMORE PRODUCTIVE PLAYERS ADD STOP SUBTRACTING!!

Thinking about it, it might be a good thing if Long returns. The OL Unit is the one that takes the longest to develop and mesh, more so probably in a zone blocking scheme. Maybe leave it more or less as it was last year then draft now future, better Players for it.

I like Keller but his stats are almost identical to Fasano. Both are the same age. Fasano has one more year of NFL experience.

Fasano career stats...205 rec-2373 yds-24tds....14 tds last three seasons

Keller career stats...241 rec- 2876 yds- 17 tds

Both have been productive but not game changers. I'd like him as a Fin but we shouldn't overpay for him. Trouble is we NEED a starter as there is no gauramtee to land one in the draft.

Btw....Keller had 12 tds in the last three seasons....2 less than fasano

We really don't want Keller as a red-zone threat but as a seam threat(4.5 speed). Dig?

You might want one of these very tall rookie TEs(6'6+) as red zonr threats, if they can block, of course.

It is becoming more clear now. Between, Eiffert and Ertz, you pick the better blocker of the 2.

I have to give it to you, Armando, you were right in one thing this year, Mike Wallace(with a little help from your friends, of course).

Sure. This year you move up to get the Guy you want.

If we hav e not signed him yet I don't see it happening we have moved on

I think the point is that we've seen what Fasano offers and he's solid but not dynamic--he's ok but limited--Keller's production is similar (same TDs but missed games last year) but he's definitely more athletic and would probably draw more attention in coverage, which helps everybody-cant imagine teams wouldnt consider him more dangerous.

I think Ireland is targeting Brandon Gibson because not only can he catch but catches TDs, a lot more than Devone Bess. I don't know if that'll mean the end for Bess necessarily but come on guys, Ireland is right on track with his thinking. Four straight loosing seasons? Anyone and everyone is a possible target to get the boot on this sub-mediocre team. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JEFF!

I hope Ireland has a plan...Less and less corners available...Cromartie goes to Denver...Cox to the Bolts...Revis rumored to go to the Bucs...And Asomugha rumored to go to SF...C'mon Ireland, get Antoine Winfield!!

4 year career.
Gibson: Rec 171 YDS 2090 TDs 9 FD 127
First 4 years (5 year career)
Bess: Rec 260 YDS 2669 TDs 11 FD 145.
WTF? I'm not okay with replacing Bess, not with Gibson.
Besides the lack of TDs Bess was on pace for his best year. TDs can't be discounted but Gibson wasn't in the endzone any more than Bess other than last year.
The grass is NOT greener folks.

Truth

He's not that good (Keller), go for Eifert in the first round. We can possibly trade down and get another pick out of the deal. We need as many offensive weapons as we can get. Hopkins looks really tought too!

Hmmm... Martellus Bennett signed with Chicago for $5M/yr and the Dolphins were chasing Jared Cook? Bennett was the do-everything TE- including blocking- so why was Miami looking to sign on a TE for more money that could do less?

Keller's not known for his blocking either so are we looking at a change in requirements for TEs in this offense? If so, that could make Michael Egnew a viable option for this year, given that he will have several additional months to have learned the playbook. Fasano's gone and perhaps the remaining blocking TEs will go also.

Keller, a fast and athletic TE might produce beyond expectation in Miami. He has good hands and offered a reliable target to Mark Sanchez. I don't like the loss of Fasano but if throwing to TEs is more important this year, I think I'll like Keller, too.

got lots of picks and still some cap money......I'm sure they know they need to address CB (2), TE (2) and O line, and will--add another WR and fill in from there....another S, RB......and waive Carpenter, save the money and draft a kicker late

The only good blocking TE available now that is also a good receiver is Travis Kelce. He will take a day two pick, but is well worth it. I think we only take Keller if he is bargain basement.
We need speed at DE opposite Wake. No need to break the bank here; David Bass on day three.
We need to get one CB and one OL in FA and we are set to clean up in the draft. This draft is loaded at DB and WR. Many combinations of early to late picks to cover these positions.
I still say LeVeon Bell is the best complement to our RB staff, and he is also a day three guy.

Remaining needs in priority order:

Tackle
Cornerback #1
Tightened #1
Conernack #2
D End
Gaurd
Tightend#2
Runningback #3

Want to see two of top five filled in free agency and then turn to draft for the rest.

I'm not sure why we are spending so much time worrying about TE in FA. We do have a crap load of draft picks this year. Eifferts, Ertz, McDonald or Escobar would all be welcomed additions.

billcale,
we don't know whether they tried for Bennett, but even if we did i understand why he went to the giants. The truth is we really don't know ALL the players the phins were/are interested in and the allerbe deal shows that. Not 1 reporter reported this until it happened. So my guess is the FO are going about their business quietly and professionally and that is the best way. I don't want the media knowing about anything until it's a done deal personally.

although the gossip is always nice :-)

oscar, NE gave amendola over 6 mil, bess isnt going there, but who cares if miami upgrades and cuts a guy that is not as good? how great would it be for mike wallace to face sean smith? pretty sweet if you ask me

Ellerbe over Dansby was our best move by far! I guess the fact that he came into the season 20lbs overweight 2 yrs ago and his constant excuses for average play had a lot todo with that. The guy was getting paid to be star and he ran his mouth like one. The problem was he only played average, not an emotional leader.

I hate the fact that NE got amendola. That guy is a complete pain in the a to cover! younger than Welker. Not sure if the Pats really lot a lot there. hopefully amendola's injury still bothers him.

NE will always be a threat to any team whilst T.Brady is their qb!!!!

Hard to believe the loss of Welker by the Pats. The Brady-Welker connection has been money to NE for years now. Brady-Amendola? They might play on the same team and even put up some numbers but won't be the catalyst that Brady-Welker was to the offense.

NEs loss is certainly Miami's gain, though. I can't even remember how many Miami-NE games I saw where the NE offense stalled, series after series but the Dolphin offense couldn't take advantage of it. Then Brady-Welker started... 4, 5, 6 passes in a row that the Dolphins couldn't stop and the great Patriot offensive engine finally fired up- and it was over.

Tom Brady has a great talent for stating the Patriot way at press conferences. But after reworking his contract- and you know some of it was to be for the purpose of retaining Welker- you have to wonder what now will come out of his mouth. What ever it is, it has to hurt because it's really hard to talk while biting your tongue.

dansby was a pos. back stabber, he was the lead cryer when dey axed c.johnson.

Fins of Fury, Vance McDonald is also out there as a day 2 pick.

Woddshed, I woudl think they are going hard after TE in free agency because after Eifert, the long pass threat isn't really there.

Nothing on Keller yet?

Ireland did good with his 1st 3 signings. 2 of them being cap neutral(actually helps the cap after 6/1) and bringing in Wallace. All more playmakers than who they replace.

However, I feel Ireland is about to ruin it by going back into typical Jeff ireland mode.

No one is paying S. Smith or J. Long at the moment. Hell! S. Smith hasn't even visited anyone to my knowledge!

Tweet & various rumors & reports showing Ireland not moving on either position because he wants them both back. That would undermine what he's done! Neither of those players helped the team win so bringing them back makes sense? Huh?

Long thought he's the best tackle in the world and 3 or 4 tackles went before him. Smith thinks he's worth more & better DB's lesser knowns, went ahead of him. He hasn't even had a visit to my knowledge!

Why on Earth would he hold off bringing in fresh blood in order to resign the same overrated players?

DONT DO IT JEFF!

Kelce is a beast. He looks like someone just turned him loose when he plays. He is step under Eifert as a receiver, but no other Te can touch his passion and aggressive nature. Vance is cool, no problem there; I think Kelce fits what we need at Te.

BTW, anyone with small kids, I highly recommend the movie Wreck-It Ralph!

My kids got a kick out of it & as a previous owner of Atari etc..this movie certainly brought back memories!
