Albert might be had for 54th overall selection

The old adage is you don't find starting left tackles in the second or third round of the NFL draft. The Dolphins might be able to do exactly that -- sort of -- today.

General manager Jeff Ireland of Miami and general manager John Dorsey of Kansas City are scheduled to speak today before the start of the draft's second round. The two talked during the middle of the first round on Thursday, according to Dorsey, and that's when they agreed to reconvene today.

"We'll see what happens," Dorsey said. "That's kind of where we're at."

The conversation between the two GMs will be about trading left tackle Branden Albert from Kansas City to Miami.

The clubs have been going back and forth on Albert for several days and throughout that time it has been speculated the Chiefs were trying to get the higher of the Dolphins' two second-round draft picks to make the deal. The Dolphins never offered that pick, apparently, and might not have made any significant offer involving a second round pick at all.

Interestingly, the Dolphins traded away the higher of their two second-round picks, No. 42, in order to move up in the first round and take DE/OLB Dion Jordan. They have the 54th overall selection remaining and Dorsey didn't seem upset at the idea that could be enough to acquire Albert.

"Would I make that trade if it was offered to me? I don't know," Dorsey said. "That's an unknown. Until something happens, I really don't know."

The offer may be forthcoming. Of course, if the Dolphins want to play hardball, they might offer a third-rounder, of which they have two. Perhaps they want to offer a 2014 pick.

This much seems possible: Miami can get Albert for the 54th overall pick if they offer it.

If they do that the Dolphins might just find a starting left tackle in the second round.

---------

If you're interested in what I think about the Dolphins landing Jordan on Thursday, go here. To me the pick is obviously of primary importance. But what I truly love is the utter guts of identifying a player and throwing caution to the wind to go get him.

It's a bold move.

It's a cowboy up move.

I cannot guarantee Jordan will be a hit. But as I reported early Thursday afternoon the Dolphins were willing to bet on Jordan enough to trade up to get him because they see the potential for greatness there.

I like that.

------------

Continue to come back throughout the day. Indeed, do not leave. There will be major updates throughout. I'm working on Miami's third-round selections.

Rdubs,
Some forum in ESPN was suggesting the EJ Manuel was a good pick while ours was a sign of desperation. LOL

Imagine if we had throw a gazillion dollars to Mario Williams last year or drafted EJ this? Those morons in Bristol would be all over us.

I'm from Mexico so I cannot understand why it is. Is it their mancrushes with Bellicheat and Brady? Or they're envious of the sun and beach in So. Fla?

Not funny that this team has a secondary that can't cover. Safties included. It's hard to excel on both sides of the ball. Is this going to be a defensive draft on an offensive draft. IF its about defense now...take a damn cb who can catch with some instincts. Been a while since we have seen a Fins cb successfully jump a route or turn and play the football in the air. Give up a 2 for albert and this draft will become the w.o.a.t. by the time the Fins are back up to select.

I agree with Omar, offer a 3rd they scoff, no dice!! I am not a huge Winston fan, but we now have him, where we want him. San Diego and Philly both drafted a LT, so they are out of the running for his services, which drives down price.

Does JASON PETERS become a cap casualty, and could he be a stop gap!

Texas Dolphan,
"IMO DJ is the most versatile player in the draft on D"
You see that is the problem. Being versatile means he is not excellent at anything. If he was a great pass rusher, which some people mistakenly think he is, he would not have been dropping back in pass coverage so much, which he was not that good at either, as evidenced by his 1 pass defended and 0 interceptions in 4 college seasons.
Time will tell who is correct on this. I hope I am wrong, but I just know this was a huge draft mistake.

There are a some on this blog that have issue with the Jordan pick. They believe in their research and opinions. Their research may have included listening to Jon Gruden who is a paid blow hard for ESPN. Gruden can say what he wants. He no longer has to get up early or stay late and he does not even have to be correct with his opinions. Jon will keep his job by just going with general opinions that are shared by many. It's called television or feeding the mass audience, giving opinions for public consumption. He now entertains by saying things that the public may find humorous or provocative.

PEOPLE WHO ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT JORDAN!!!

"WE NEED A PASS RUSHER" in free agency and they are complaining about Jordan, you think a LT is expensive in free agency, an elite pass rusher is twice as much (Peppers,Mario Williams). This is a HUGE value for 5 years, if he pans out

Rdubs,

Interesting point on Peters. I never thought of him. I don't know their cap situation but they have chopped a lot of salary this offseason. Does Johnson move to LT or RT right away? Do they chop Peters? Interesting point. We have a lto more cap room in June or July when the Dansby contract comes off the books. Maybe they wait for a guy like Peters.

The market for Albert has shrunk and is a buyers market leaving us as the only bidder. Why even a third? Offer a 4th or 5th and no more. They surely aren't going to want to pay the guy 10 mil after selecting Fisher yesterday. We have enormous leverage and need to use it.

If Dion Jordan turns to be a great player I want all the fans who are not happy to go cheer for another team.

Pass rusher is the most important position in defense. We need more weapons pressuring the QB. Speed, speed, speed.

Our D is very good, but we need playmakers 1)Pass rusher 2) Defensive back ballhawk for interceptions.

Texas,

Yeah my favorite 2 pass rushers were Jarvis Jones and if you wanted to go "potential" with production I liked Bjoern Werner.

Jordan, Ansah and Mingo - I didn't like any of them. They were all such boom or bust prospects. The chances of all 3 being great? The betting man in me wouldn't touch that bet. I just don't like average production combined with just speed and not size and strength. These guys are all 1 trick ponys in my eyes.

If Jordan is such an athlete I would prefer to see him at 4-3 OLB and on the complete obvious pass downs move him DE. This is basically what Denver does with Von Miller and I love that creative use. If you take a this super athletic player you have to use him creatively and not just 1 spot. The offenses have passed the defenses and now its time for the defenses to take athletes and use them in an unconventional way.

Actually MassDolphan you DON'T know. You THINK you know. You're not any smarter than anyone else here or anyone who's analysis I value you more than you.

You're actually just blowing hot air out of your a88 like the rest of us. Get over yourself and cut the 'I KNOW it was a big mistake' bullshyte. Cause the truth is you don't know.

The Jordan pick surprised me but I'm cool with it, don't think he will make a huge impact this year cause Philbin strikes me as a coach who likes to develop his players, barring injurys it looks like the phins have set them selves up for a good pass rush in the years to come like someone said yesterday, Wake is 31 so in a couple years he will probably be a third down guy with Jordan an Vernon carrying the load. As far as TE goes maybe just maybe the switch will flip for Egnew ( like CJ Spiller last year) and he will prove his worth. And I still like J. Martin as a LT if not this year then the next cause I think he will develop, just get a veteran like Mkinnie to help out this year. Just my opinion.

Dion Jordan,

I hate the pick. I was on here yesterday saying hours before the draft I didn't like Jordan. I can't back pedal now. I can hope I am wrong though. To me teams are in love with his size/athleticism but where is the production?

44 Tackles
10.5 Tackles for loss
5 sacks
1 QB Hit
3 Forced Fumbles

Again I hope am wrong. I hope Jordan is what everyone else see's because I don't.

Andy,

I'm with you bro. This pick has me scratching my head like most of Ireland's other drafts. I can understand trading up for Joeckel b/c it would have been a perfect marriage of need & value BUT Dion Jordan??? I HATE this pick. I'm on record as saying I don't like Jordan, I don't like Ansah, & I don't like Mingo. These guys are not ELITE prospects.

It's all going to depend(if successful or not) on how Coyle uses Dion. He has the talent to excel but only if properly used. Just because of DJ, we will probably be a much more hybrid D this Season.

Andy,

Again man, we're just not seeing things the same way. I was so-so on Jones and Werner ahs BUST written all over him. He was the guy more than anyone I didn't want.

We'll see how it all plays out. Looks like I'm going to be riding Kris when Mallett fails and riding you when Jordan hits it big time!....LOL.

My opinion as I posted before is to keep talking, but not make any offer until the Chiefs make the 1st selection in the 3rd round and the Dolphins make their selection in the 2nd and 1st selection of the 3rd,at that point depending on who I drafted I would make the offer either my 2nd 3rd rounder or a lower choice.
I know the GM for the Chiefs will not give him away but it would be better to get something for him rather than let him play out his contract and leave as a free agent in 2014.They drafted an O-lineman with the very first pick so they already have a replacement for Albert.

Oscar,

Jordan weighs 240 pounds. That's an OLB. And what happened to Odrick & Vernon??? And to make this trade even worse--b/c of the surgery on his shoulder--will he be ready for training camp???

One point in the comparison between Taylor and Jordan and their stats,Taylor had better stats coming out of college, but I know that he played weaker competition on a regular basis coming from Akron than Jordan did playing at Oregon.

We'll see how it all plays out. Looks like I'm going to be riding Kris when Mallett fails and riding you when Jordan hits it big time!....LOL.

Craig,

You have my permission to rip me to pieces if Jordan is legit. As for now I HATE the pick.

We Need Playmakers,

Yeah it's too hard for me to backpedal now. I was just on here yesterday afternoon saying I hope if we trade up it's not for Jordan.

The only positive spin I can put on Jordan is that I hope he is used creatively. I don't think he's this pure pass rushing DE prospect. Miami better use him creatively. I actually want him to play OLB in the 4-3, he can blitz, drop into this zone system we plan on running more of instead of man and on obvious pass downs put him at DE. If he lines up at DE on first down and Im a QB, Im checking down to a run right at him on opening day the opening play. Trent Richardson will be running right at that 6'6 frame on the line. Put him in space at OLB and he has a better chance IMO.

WHPs,

Ok man. I'll add you to the list of guys I'll be riding when this guy makes it big in the NFL.

Nobody knows if this will make it or not but I love the courage to go up and get one of the top talents in the draft. For too long we sit and wait or tradeback for 'value' picks. To be able to move up 9 spots and get a guy like this while only giving up a second is sheer geniusm whether the move pans out or not. How some of you guys can't applaud that, I just don't know.

To those who claim 'everyone' had Jordan in the top 5, or even 10: PFW 2013 Draft Guide mock draft had him going to the Cowboys at pick 18. Pick 18! And we moved up to take this guy.
His college production was pedestrian at best.
Those who compare him to JT are smoking something.
This draft has panic written all over it.

Craig M,

I hope I am wrong all day on Dion Jordan. I can't hate the man now, he's a Dolphin. But at the same time I was on here yesterday killing the guy. I just don't see what others see in him and if anything a system like Jacksonville he could be a success because Gus Bradley comes from that defense that Pete Carrol implores with the Jack LB who drops into coverage, blitzes, puts his hand in the ground and various things but for Miami's vanilla approach and other 4-3 teams I don't get it.

I keep posting about how Denver uses Von Miller and thats what I hope for. Line him up at DE and I think he's a nonfactor more then not. Play him at OLB even in a 4-3 and he is obviously fast and athletic enough to cover most TEs and RBs, he can blitz from that spot, roam around and cause havoc and on obvious pass downs he's a pass rusher. That's how I think he has to be used. Get creative don't just peg him as an edge rusher because if you do IMO he fails.

Who gives a rip where a handful of jackasses had him going in their mock drafts? Mock drafts are like coloring books, they are fun to goof around with once a year but no one takes them seriously. Excepts the retard population.

Put him in space at OLB and he has a better chance IMO.

Andy,

I agree. I think he's an OLB & I can't get Aaron Curry out of my head....

WHPs/Andy,

So if this guy moves to OLB and hits it big will you still hate the pick?

It's about getting top end talent and athletes on the team guys. For some reason you guys are looking for a ready made machine. I don't believe that guy was in the draft this year. It might take this guy a year or two to get it. You guys are looking at his college production and writing him off. How? Did you do the same thing with JPP?

"but for Miami's vanilla approach"

Do you people even really WATCH football?

Andy,

You talk about Miami's 'vanilla' defence. First of all I don't agree with you. But if you are right, do you blame Coyle for that or the players on the team. They've changed it up, getting rid of Burnett and Dansby and now adding Ellerbe, Wheeler and Jordan. With Vernon in the mix too, do you still see this as being a 'vanilla' defence?

Craig M,

If he even plays half way decent as a rookie I won't hate the pick. I just had my opinion on the guy and maybe as a mid 1st rounder or late first rounder I love the athleticism and 6'6 long, fast player but top 5, top 10, no. I especially don't like it because he's our guy that high and although we made out on the better end of the trade value we still did burn a 2nd and are more then likely to use our other 2nd on Albert now. So we sit with our hands folded in round 2.

I will be the first to come on here opening weekend and say I am pleasantly surprised if Jordan makes any sort of impact play. A tip pass, sack, forced fumble and a great play in coverage, etc.

For the record I didn't like Pierre Paul coming out either. Im man enough to admit that. Loved my guy Earl Thomas though at #12 that year.

I like the move by our Fins. I am struggling to understand how Gruden and Kiper criticize the pick when he has a scouts grade of 95 and was in the top 5 of every top 32 list I saw (including Kipers). The highest rated DE in the draft. We all know that our pass rush needed help. Vernon is coming on, but another great edge rusher to help Cameron will certainly help the team. Good pick. If he is even 75% of what Taylor was, it was worth the pick. Armando had a blog a day or two ago that said the Fins may do this and that Joekel or Jordan would be the target, but the price would be steep. Once I saw we only lost pick 42, I about fell over in my chair. Great move Ireland.

Was there a bigger WUSS last night than Geno Smith? Seriously!! What was with the head down all the time, like he just wanted to die. and he couldn't wait to get out of there. Didn't even stick around until the end of the round.

I've got a lot of questions about this guys game but that says it all about this guy's leadership right there. Hold your head high and be a man. Learn from it. He folded like a cheap suitcase. I wans't the least bit impressed by this guy.

Ok man. I'll add you to the list of guys I'll be riding when this guy makes it big in the NFL.

Nobody knows if this will make it or not but I love the courage to go up and get one of the top talents in the draft. For too long we sit and wait or tradeback for 'value' picks. Craig,

I'm sorry I can't share your enthusiasm. I don't like Jordan as an NFL prospect. I realize some scouts LOVE him but if we were looking for a legitimate pass rusher, I don't think Jordan is that guy. Since we couldn't get Fisher or Joeckel I'd much rather we took Milliner.

Pepople who keep beatching about Jordan weight, yes he's 240 right now but do you dimwits think players stop putting on weight when they get to the NFL, like all of a suddent hey stop liftining weights he'll continusley put on weight through the years and by year 2 he'll be at least 250.

He supremley athletic and putting on weight will just make him more dominant. JPP, JT there were a lot of ends smallish coming out of school you put on even more weight when you get to the NFL. This guy remind me of Aldon Smith from the 49ers, have you guys seen him hes tall and lanky.

Andy and WHP,

Keep in mind that Jordan played since October with a bad shoulder. This kid is talented as they come and with his versatility adds a dimension to the D that we have not had in a long time.

I am with you guys though in that he needs to stay at OLB and play DE from time to time.

I am very happy with the pick. And looking forward to the next 3 picks today.

If we were getting abybody for pass rush, this was the guy I wanted. There's question marks bigger than Jordan on most of the guys, including Ziggy.

I'll also add, while I hate that they gave the Pats extra picks, I love what the Vikings did yesterday, adding the three guys they did. They still don't have a QB, IMO but all three of those guys will help their team.

Andy,

Agreed. I've been wrong before & I hope I'm wrong on Jordan. I didn't like when we took Pouncey either. I thought we should have a RT.

Other than last year with Tannehill & Long in 2008, I've HATED our first round picks.

Craig M,

Absolutelty Miami doesn't do nothing that teams can't game plan for. Even when they ran a 3-4 it was the most vanilla 3-4 I ever seen. You knew what was coming before the snap. As far as adding a guy like Jordan and a few LBs like Ellerbe and Wheeler that can run I hope that changes.

Like I said use Jordan's athleticism to your advantage. If anyone see's JPP or Aldon Smith I think you will be hugely disappointed, IMO. Now use Jordan creatively and you can impact plays from that athleticism. A good stat line for him once he develops is about 60 tackles, 8-10 sacks, 5-7 PD, a few game changing turnovers. He has to be that kind of player to justify the pick. If you see 15 sacks at just DE and he delivers then I will be the first to come on here and admit how wrong I am.

We Need Playmakers,

I agree I see Curry too. That's a great comparison. He was a tweener guy who rushed, covered and was a jack of all trades at Wake Forrest. We have to hope Jordan can become what Curry never lived up to.

In closing the NFL Networks 1st round analysis last night, Mayock said; "By the way, great move by the Raiders to move back to 12 and get the 42nd pick too".

I think he is stupid AND a poor loser.

Martin has been dissapointing at LT and RT.

Well if it means anything to any of you, Kurt Warner predicted Dion Jordan will be a top 100 player in 2014. If it makes some of you happy

Andy/WHPs,

I don't agree on your Curry comparison at all. Totally different guy. He was a sideline to sideline player that was expected to be a tackling machine. That's not what they have in mind for Jordan. He's a guy you can use off the edge and who drop back into coverage. Different player and they'll be used differently.

Your comparison is a stretch. Jordan will be looked at a lot more like JPP or even Aldon Smith. I'm not saying he is those guys but this guy has a ton of potential. I think you guys are missing that. You're only looking at his work to date.

Ireland stinks at the draft. He traded up for another injury plaqued guy with a bum shoulder. YIKES!

The more I thought about Jordan the more I like the pick.

Wake has another 2 3 years left.

With him teaching Jordan and Vernon we are set at de for years to come.

Some of you guys are just never, ever going to be happy, it's that simple. You are unhappy when Ireland doesn't take chances. You are unhappy when he takes chances. No matter what happens with Albert you will be unhappy.
The Fins needed a pass rusher opposite Wake. Opposing teams can no longer just double or triple up on Wake. We added two linebackers who can get to the QB quicker. All these guys can run with the TE now.
Jason Pierre Paul was 10x the risk Dion Jordan is. If you don't take chances, you never end up with elite players. I'm tired of the vanilla picks from this team. Ireland is doing a great job.
BTW Ross LOVES this pick. Look what he has been saying to the reporters. All you anti- Ireland fans will be having a real bad year.

From what I've been reading here, and from various other sources, it looks like Jordan is going to be an outside LB.
Can anyone give me an example of a 4-3 outside linebacker who was ever worth the 3rd overall pick in a draft?
Please, I need something to get my hopes up on this pick.

If Vernon develops, which he should, and all those pass rushing LBs + Wake, is going to be murder for the QB that tries to take too long to throw against Us.

We still need weapons for T-Hill.

Assuming we use the other 2nd rounder on Albert I would like Kenny Stills in the 3rd.

Hopefully, Jordan becomes an excellent player for the Dolphins.

In today's NFL, the third overall pick of the draft is expected to be an impact player in his first year and for years afterward. Even rookie QB's are expected to be able to play well right out of the gate.

In that sense, expectations for good/great performance in year one are totally justified.

Only actual performance in games will tell if the trade up for Jordan was the right move. There is also opportunity cost to consider - the two players the Dolphins could have picked at 12 and 42; of course, opportunity cost is often difficult to measure, but it does exist.

Going forward, the Dolphins still seem to have needs at OT, TE, CB, S, RB, and WR.

If the Dolphins trade their last second round pick for Albert, then it may be out of panic. Even worse, it may indicate that the Dolphins are not as improved as we hoped. That would be three premium picks spent on an OLB/DE with medical issues and a mature OT with medical issues.

Three free agents with medical issues (Keller, Grimes, and Louis) were also signed.

A lot is going to have to go right for 2013 to see a better Dolphins team.

An incredible amount of pressure will be on Tannehill in 2013 to take his game to a much higher level.

Von Miller

MassDolphan,

Sure I'll give you one. How about Von Miller?

And don't give me this crap that he plays DE. He was drafted as an OLBer and they move him around. Very impactful guy too, btw,

I'm sure you'll be long gone from here or posting under another name once Jordan's hit it big.

MassDolphan your an idiot, go back to the hole you come from. Jordan the pick if you dont like it too bad its done and over with, youve been spewing your hate for 2 days now.

A 6'6 248 DE who runs a 4.5 are you kidding me?? This guys an athletic freak

Bobby @9:32am,

Very well said. I'm so fukking tired of all the whining from Dolphin fans. Some of these fans are like a bunch of old ladies. There's not a single pick that Ireland could make that people would be happy with.

'NY G', you're one of the guys I'm calling out this morning. I read some of your comments last night and I read some of your stuff when they added the LBers. What EXACTLY would make you happy? Ireland being fired? We'll it not happening any time son, bud, so get used to it. The owner LOVES the pick and LOVEs the fact that Ireland was able to fleece the Raiders for the moveup. You don't fire a guy for that.

He's around for a while longer fellas....deal with it!

I would have offically become a New England Patriot fan if Irelenad would have taken a TE (Tyler Eifert) in this spot. I would have taken Ziggy but Dion is no slouch. Great pick.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkyGYvKz30g

LOL, no way Jordan has a higher ceiling than Jason Taylor (a HOF player) especially when you consider he already sustained a serious shoulder injury. Jordan's shoulder may not be able to hold up against NFL O-Lineman.

Jamie,

I don't know if he's a passrusher. Is he a DE??? He's not a physical player so I don't think so. I think he's an athletic OLB that we're going to use to cover TE's down the field. I'm not so sure Jordan will be as good of a pro as Datone Jones.

At first I HATED what the Bills did last night. In hindsight I think they played it very well. They got a ransom for the Rams moving up to take Austin and they got the QB they wanted at 16. Could they have gotten him later? Sure. But if he's the guy you want, why wait. It's clear they weren't sold on Nassib.

They've positioned themselves to have a very nice draft.

DE is a need!!! Get Albert because LT is a need too!!! then work on getting us some secondary help!!! It's nice to see some aggressive-ness from Ireland but it's only cuz it is his last hurrah he should have been doing this for the past 5 years & maybe the Patsies wouldn't kill us every year TWICE!!! GO FINS!!!

Forget the KC Chiefs and Albert. Let them play that Highstakes Poker elsewhere. Move on and keep the picks. At 54 we can land a Tackle (one that is cheaper and doesn't have a bad back......See Jake Long, we let him go because of injuries among other things) Or we get a CB a position of need. Look around the league. Not every starting LT or RT was a first round pick, they are there in the 4th and 5th as well
