Albert might be had for 54th overall selection

The old adage is you don't find starting left tackles in the second or third round of the NFL draft. The Dolphins might be able to do exactly that -- sort of -- today.

General manager Jeff Ireland of Miami and general manager John Dorsey of Kansas City are scheduled to speak today before the start of the draft's second round. The two talked during the middle of the first round on Thursday, according to Dorsey, and that's when they agreed to reconvene today.

"We'll see what happens," Dorsey said. "That's kind of where we're at."

The conversation between the two GMs will be about trading left tackle Branden Albert from Kansas City to Miami.

The clubs have been going back and forth on Albert for several days and throughout that time it has been speculated the Chiefs were trying to get the higher of the Dolphins' two second-round draft picks to make the deal. The Dolphins never offered that pick, apparently, and might not have made any significant offer involving a second round pick at all.

Interestingly, the Dolphins traded away the higher of their two second-round picks, No. 42, in order to move up in the first round and take DE/OLB Dion Jordan. They have the 54th overall selection remaining and Dorsey didn't seem upset at the idea that could be enough to acquire Albert.

"Would I make that trade if it was offered to me? I don't know," Dorsey said. "That's an unknown. Until something happens, I really don't know."

The offer may be forthcoming. Of course, if the Dolphins want to play hardball, they might offer a third-rounder, of which they have two. Perhaps they want to offer a 2014 pick.

This much seems possible: Miami can get Albert for the 54th overall pick if they offer it.

If they do that the Dolphins might just find a starting left tackle in the second round.

---------

If you're interested in what I think about the Dolphins landing Jordan on Thursday, go here. To me the pick is obviously of primary importance. But what I truly love is the utter guts of identifying a player and throwing caution to the wind to go get him.

It's a bold move.

It's a cowboy up move.

I cannot guarantee Jordan will be a hit. But as I reported early Thursday afternoon the Dolphins were willing to bet on Jordan enough to trade up to get him because they see the potential for greatness there.

I like that.

------------

Continue to come back throughout the day. Indeed, do not leave. There will be major updates throughout. I'm working on Miami's third-round selections.

"Jordan may end up being great, he may stink. The idea Ireland is a genius for this move is as laughable as the idea he should be fired. We won't know."

Daryl,

Well said. That's exactly right. Enough with the evaluations & comparisons. The truth is that NO ONE outside the Dolphin organization saw this move coming so I'm surprised. Even Steven Ross said he was surprised. I want to see the kid play before I form an opinion.

No one knows sh#t (including myself) about what kind of pro he will be.

WNP hitting nail on head.

Phins have KC by the b*lls. Offer a third and that's it. Albert won't play the right side, so they'll have to cut him if they can't trade him, unless KC just used the #1 pick on a right tackle.

WHP,
When you compare draft picks to players like JT you're not saying that Jordan plays like him or will be him. It should go more in the line of 'he reminds me of'...JT was a 3rd Rd kid from Akron that no one thought he'd be a HOF. He was tall, skinny and very athletic like Jordan with some upside to him.

What I say is that Jordan remind us of a JT or JPP and we hope he takes a similar path. Nothing more

FUNNY... If all of you hang on every word a person like Mel Kiper says than go for it. LOL

Who cares what some "writer" puts in SI.. Jordon was going to go in the top 10.

His potential is there and the Dolphins think with a little work they can make this guy great. Let the coaches do their job and lets see how this kid performs. If you haven't noticed, the so called beat writer's and draft experts always mention the negative traits... Go back and review their predictions in year's past.. I doubt they are even 50%..

LET THE KID PLAY...

We Need Playmakers,

Exactly! Jason Taylor comparisons aren't even fair to the kid. JT is HOF, DPOY and one of the all time greats in Dolphins uniform. Yeah, Jordan is athletic and fast and everyone has to be compared to someone but Jason Taylor? Wow.

And I agree with you that just because he looks great with his 3.8% body fat and is 6'6 doesn't mean he can play a lick of NFL football.

Again, I hope and I mean I REALLY hope I am wrong. I hope they find ways to use this athletic specimen so that he doesn't become Mike Mamula.

...BoulderPhin..Smith was a contributor..14 sacks his rookie year.(He was also picked out of the top 5) I would do cartwheels and put wear a Santa Suit if Jordan came close to this next year. I think it is fair to put an over-under on his sack totals as far as a barometer of his rookie year success.. How about +7.5 sacks for this year..

The pick was OK, my concern is that he is the overall #3 pick in the draft, and if he is only a 3rd down pass rusher like some are saying that he will be in his first year as he learns the position, that is unacceptable. You don't select projects at #3 overall. You select studs/future pro bowlers who are ready to play from day 1 at #3 overall. I guess we will see.

I think that in some of our defensive schemes it will be hard to tell who is the DE and who is the OLB. That is why this pick is so great. Think HYBRID

Now trade up and get Lacy! He is the BPA or BAP. Then we get the best defensive and offensive players in the draft.

Hard to get excited about a guy who played on a mediocre defense and only saw action on 42% of that D's snaps. This is a very bad move in my opinion.

DOLPHINS JUST TRADED BESS FOR A 6 ROUND PICK TO THE JETS!!!

SEC,
When people use Kiper to support their argument I laugh. This is the same guy who criticized us for not taking Brady Quinn or said that Marino wouldn't make it.

Guy is a joke

TVegas,

That writer from SI doesn't know sh#t either. Not sure if you saw the ESPN movie 'From Elway to Marino' but in the movie after the Dolphins took Dan Marino, Paul Zimmerman aka as Dr. Z who was on the broadcast team said he didn't understand the pick & he questioned where the coaching was going to come from for Marino.

The draft is truly an inexact science.

I don't see Jordan as playing DE this season as his primary position.

It is true that Ireland has overpaid for some FAs(Wallace, Wheeler) and has been involved in some strange deals(Albert, Long)culminating with the trade to get DJ at #3 yesterday who nobody knows what position he belongs to. Still, if these moves work and makes us be better as a Team, so what? But what is very very clear with all these quasi-questionable moves is that Ireland is into the beat NE now Mode and win the Division this year. I hope it works, it's about Time.

And To The Clown Who Thinks I Waste Even A Second Of My Time Trolling Or Reading The Clowns Post Anymore. Is Delusional.

First Off Dashi Has Never Impersonated Anybody. And If Dashi Has A Problem With You, Dashi Will Confront You.

Unlike Some Of You Who Constantly Troll Dashi With Different Names. And Not Saying It Was You Trolling Dashi Yesterday, Just That You Have Done So Before.

And Before I Get A Chitload Of Post "You Talking About Me"

No!!

I'm Talking About My Fans (Trolls).

DASHI- Do you drive a cab?

If we in fact traded up, only lost a 2nd Rd and got the best pass rusher in the Draft?? Then Ireland is a genius. If not?? Ireland will be criticized. Either way I give credit to Ireland for going out and FINALLY taking a chance on a potential "elite" player....

jordan is a young copy of jason taylor. they said jason taylor was not big enough. jason taylor was all over the field making plays. dion jordon will be all over the field making plays. a great pass rush helps out the whole defense especially the pass defense. you dont win the draft! you win games! you play to win the game! you draft players to help your teams specific needs and style. Touchdown Miami!

When you compare draft picks to players like JT you're not saying that Jordan plays like him or will be him. Arturo,

I'm not talking about size or speed comparisons I'm talking about when people say 'this guy is the next....Blah, blah, blah.' Yes, I see similarities between Ertz & Jason Witten but at the end of the day he'd be lucky to have half the career that Witten had. You just can't project HOF careers w/ a draft pick b/c so many things can happen.

Oscar,

Ireland Has Stated He Drafted Him As A OLB.

Mando and Adam Beasley Both Have Tweeted The Same.

Look I think it's time to move on with Jordan and see how he shakes out over the next 1-3 years.

I have to believe Philbin, Coyle and Ireland spent days watching tape and speaking to coaches before making this type of trade up move. These guys are pros unlike us fans. I think for them to make this move they had to really see potential and proven success.

Now we need to focus on how to get max value out of rounds 2-7 and how to add starters or depth with FA's and restricted FA.

Jordan is a Fin....lets move forward

JETS, why aren't you on a NY blog talking about how great the Jets did in the first round?

So who do we get at 54? Do you guys want to get Albert for that 54? I say NO but Armando on twitter thinks that is going to be what happens.

I say offer a 4th and see what happens now that we've traded the other 2nd rounder. I would prefer going after one of the guys on this list.

Ertz TE
Hunter WR
Taylor CB
Alford CB
Amerson CB
Cyprien S
Watson OT
Patton WR
Ryan CB
Poyer CB
Armstead OT
Barrett Jones C/OG
Wheaton WR
Short DT

BESS is now a JET!! Remember the Welker trade to New England?? And a 6th round pick? Ha

...BoulderPhin..Smith was a contributor..14 sacks his rookie year.(He was also picked out of the top 5) I would do cartwheels and put wear a Santa Suit if Jordan came close to this next year. Another ridiculous comparison. Aldon Smith is a f#cking BEAST & it doesn't hurt that he plays with Justin Smith. A lot of Smith's sacks came on T&E stunts w/ Justin Smith.

GRUDEN AND BILLICK ARE BITTER BECAUSE THEY BOTH WANTED THE FINS JOB....

JORDAN WAS CONSIDERED THE BEST PASS RUSHER UNTIL THE DOLPHINS TOOK HIM..

HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GO # 2 TO JACKS, 4 TO PHILLY OR 5 TO LIONS...

I WOULD RATHER HAVE JORDAN THAN ANSAH OR MINGO...

IF WE TRADED TO PICK 5 I BET DETROIT WOULD HAVE INSISTED FOR MORE THAN WE GAVE THE RAIDERS..RAIDERS WERE DESPERATE FOR ANOTHER PICK..

Guy on Colin Cowherd just now said they had Dion Jordan as the 20th ranked PASS RUSHER and 40th ranked player overall. Said it was a huge reach and he most likely will do nothing in the NFL. Players who are not productive in college won't be productive in the NFL. Dion Jordan only 5 sacks last season.

Jets,

I Don't Drive A Cab But I Use Your Mom As A Taxi.

(No Watch Me Catch Hell, From The Same Guy.)

COLIN COWHERD WORKS FOR ESPN, DON'T BOTHER THINKING YOU WILL GET ANYTHING FAVORABLE ABOUT THE FINS ON THAT NETWORK...

The biggest criticism with Jordan is strength, which in the NFL is also the easiest to fix, 20 pounds of muscle will be easy to put on in the right program. This kid should be one of the good ones.

is Albert that much better vs Clabo, Winston, or McKinnie? + a pick would be saved

BESS is now a JET!! Remember the Welker trade to New England?? And a 6th round pick? Ha

JETS,

You're truly an idiot. The Jets will be lucky if they win five games this year. Your QB is a cissy & he has NO ONE to throw the ball to & your starting RB is gone. Santonio Holmes was a terrible signing. They overpaid for him & he still doesn't want to play for them

TJ, LMAO @you. "Some guy" on Colin Cowheads show means nothing. Most NFL people had Jordan rated 3 rd best player in this draft. Call up Cowhead and tell him his show suxs, just like him. LMAO "some guy" !!

The more I hear Cowherd and Gruden, the more I agree with them. Dolphins selected a guy who barely played half the snaps in college at #3 overall. He has the body of Rupaul and didn't have much production, only 5 sacks, 14.5 for loss. I don't know who these people that were ranking him a top 5 prospect but he probably should have been given a 2nd or 3rd round grade at best.

My last post on Jordan and then I promise to move on. This is from an NFL scout, not me or my opinion. But someone who truly knows more about football than any of us bloggers. For those who think Jordan is the best pass rusher in this draft, check this out.
"Jordan scares me. I'm not sold on the tall drink of water. Is he a Sam in a 4-3? Is he a Von Miller type in terms of how he plays? He doesn't have his explosiveness or power. I like his athleticism in his drops, but his pass rush is pretty ordinary. He's leggy and has trouble powering through people and doesn't get off blocks real well. From being at pratice, he scares the crap out of me."

NO DAVE:

NO TO TRADING FOR ALBERT, NOOOO WAY! THIS IS WHAT SHOULD PAN OUT FOR THE PHINS!!!

DRAFT ARMSTEAD OR BRENNAN WILLAMS @ 54 NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES

3RD ROUND:@78 TAKE ROBERT ALFORD/ CB

3RD ROUND:@ 82 TAKE STEADMAN BAILEY

4TH ROUND: TAKE JON BOSTIC / ILB TO PLAY WOTH ELLERBE, WHEELER (OH WAT A WRECKING CREW THEYD BE)

6TH ROUND BARRETT JONES / G/C/T FROM BAMA

6TH ROUND: UZZI OMAREGGI / ATHLETIC G FROM GT (LIKE J COOPER FROM UNC) THIS LINE WOULD BE SET IF THESE BOYS WERE SELECTED

7TH ROUND: CIERRE WOOD / RB ND

7TH ROUND: HONEY BADGER OR ANOTHER CB PROPECT

7TH ROUND: A SAFETY PROSPECT

On You Guys Crying Jordan Only Had 5 Sacks.

Let Me Break It Down For You Clowns.

Jordan Only Played Half The Snaps In College Because Oregon Rotates Players.

Add To That Jordan Dropped Back In Coverage Half The Time.

So With 1/4 Of The Snaps He Got 5 Sacks.

Picture If He Was Just Strictly A Pass Rusher.

NO armando:

Big boy pants Jeffy, big boy pants!!

Colin Cowherd? If he had any brains at all, the first thing he would have done is change his name.

DJ might not be the second coming of Werner Von Braun, but looking over his Game again, I did notice that he's very aware on the field and always trying to knock the ball down from the QB or RB and hitting them hard. And with that torque, he can hit hard, very hard.

Why do we knock our own draft? Because we didn't pick the player we wanted? Give me a break!!! How do we know this Jordan kid will be a bust? Because he is a tweeter? Too skinny? Don't know what position he will play? This is the same team that had Jason Taylor!!! HOFamer Jason Taylor! Not saying this kid is the next JT !!! But, damn! If we have all been Fin fans and saw what JT did...then why be so cynical? We moved from #12 all the way up to #3!!! 9 spots!!! And it cost us one #2...all the reports I had seen talked about multiple picks to give up (which I would have hated)...but seriously, only a #2! Did you guys not see ALL the picks MINN gave to the PATS!!! I think the media (esp ESPN) was raving about Bellichik and his genious move to score all these extra picks (sarcasm)! Hell...I guess maybe we should have called MINN first before calling OAK!
Lets just wait and see. When we signed Wake from Canada...we didn't know he would turn into a Pro Bowler.
Anybody you pick in the draft is a gamble, a risk. All you who want to play the role and talk about how bad the pick is, how he will be a bust, and how you would have taken someone else...you go right ahead. I will play the wait and see game, and since I have been a fan since 77'...I have def seen a lot! If Jordan is a stud then GREAT! If he is a bust, then he won't be the first and he won't be the last.
Still wont give you any credit yet Mr Ireland , because you haven't done anything yet to make this team a winner. But, I will wait and see.
Now...bring on Draft Day 2!!!

I think dion Jordan will be a massive playmaker for us with double digit sacks for years to come I see stardom in his future

We only got a 6th for Bess and it's the Jets? Wow.

Dashi, that is the problem, you don't take somebody who is only a pass rusher who will come in only on 3rd down as the #3 overall pick! You take him low first/high second round if you like him

TJ, nice going, first you quote "some guy" on the Cowhead show now u believe some guy named "Jets" and a bogus report about Bess.

Jets Troll made that up MassDolphan

To Breakdown D. Jordan's Game.

He Can Cover The TE(Eifert) Or Set The Edge Against The Run As A OLB On First Down.

Then D. Jordan Can Cover The Slot(T.Austin) On 2nd Down. Or Blitz.

And Last But Not Least, D. Jordan Can Rush The Passer On 3rd Down.

He Is A Complete OLB. Add To That He Is 6'7".

Bobbyd12, I'm just saying what analysts are saying. I agree with some of their opinions. If you want to trust that Ireland and Dolphins know their stuff about Jordan than you can do that. I personally don't trust Ireland yet to get a top 5 pick correct.

Dion Jordan WILL EXCELL!! especially with Cam Wake on the opposite side!!! enough said.. we don't need Albert.. we can get a RT in the 2nd. still have 2 3rd rounders!! Jon Martin can play Left

DD,

I'm not sure you are ACTUALLY reading what I'm saying. Ireland targetted Jordan as the guy he wanted. He found a way to move from 12 to 3 that from all accounts was a steal. Do you want to argue that point?

That is why I said it was a genius move. Any problems with what I've said so far? So how it what I said 'laughable'?

Now whether Jordan works out or not is an entirely different matter. If it doesn't he'll be criticized for it. He potentially could be fired for it, especially if the Tannehill pick doesn't work out either.

Pass rush was a big need for this team, just as QB was last year for us. He went and got, but all accounts, the best one in the draft. Hard to crticize him for that.

And for everyone who's criticizing the JT comparisons, I don't believe ANY one has said he's the next JT. I think all anyone has said is he has the same type of athleticism as JT and is built similarly. Don't twist people's words because you don't like the pick.

I don't get it...it's like some of you think these picks are made by the GM in a vacuum. I'm sure Philbin has been highly involved in the draft process. It's the GM's job to oversee the process, not force picks on the coaches. We should be applauding the fact that Jeffy is trying to reshape this team and add athletic play makers...the very thing most of us have been hoping for... I'm excited about this pick and look forward to a monster pass rush to put Brady on his a..

Any clue if BESS will be traded before tonight's draft?

Round 2 and 3
Cyprien safety, Bree-Wilson CB, Gio Bernard RB or Kelce TE would be guys I looking at

I think it's safe to assume that Jeff Ireland did not sit in his office and come up with this trade and acquisition of the 3rd overall pick in the draft himself. Philbin and his coaching staff had to undertake thoughtful watching of film, do the research, project Jordan's talent into the Dolphin's defensive schemes etc... to make this move. Jordan was to high on to many boards and mock drafts to be called a mistake before he even plays a game.

jobin,

That's EXACTLY it. Ireland, Philbin, Sherman, Coyle and the whole scouting department have watched this guy closely. THIS is the guy they wanted all along. I just find it hilarious that guys 'hate' this pick because he had 5 sacks last year and in there opinion isn't big or strong enough.

I have no clue if they got it right or not but I'll trust their opinion on this a LOT more than someone who simply looks at a stat sheet and a guy's weight.

If they trade for Albert they are making.....

A HUGE MISTAKE

promichael,

AMEN brother. I think it's safe to say that whoever Jeff Ireland picked last night people would be complaining. So I pay no attention to the 'noise'. If he got it wrong, then so be it. He'll ultimately lose his job. But I applaud him for going and getting the guys he and the coaching staff want and if he's going down he's going down on his terms. I LOVE the aggressiveness!

Posters would rather type than read. Dude above said a scout mentioned strength with Jordan. You can't compare him to guys like Miller and Paul who came out with strength and were explosive hitters. Jordan looks very finesse. Plays with poor leverage and I mentioned his inability to come off blocks long before the poster above quoted the NFL scout. Get happy just to be un-impressed. At least O. Vernon came out without his strength being in question. Dude just need to learn how to use his hands and develop more pass rush moves. Vernon > Jordan. Just watch...what a waste of a pick.
