Answer to the most-asked draft question: No

Without question the player Dolphins fans ask me about the most for the coming draft is West Virginia all-purpose ankle-breaker Tavon Austin.

I suppose the reason Miami fans love this player is because he is a surge of electricity. Here now. Gone now. Lots of speed. Great vision. A one-on-one mismatch in the open field when he has the ball. He promises many dropped jaws in the stands and dropped pants by defenders.

So Miami fans want to know if the Dolphins are likely to pick Austin.

No, I do not see the Dolphins picking Tavon Austin in the coming draft -- certainly not in the first round where everyone seems to think he'll be selected.

This, I write, because I know how the Dolphins judge players. This because I know how the Dolphins value size and weight and the so-called prototype in the draft.

And Tavon Austin is all of 5-8 and 175 pounds which is as far from the NFL prototype as you can get without being in the CFL.

Understand, the Dolphins do make size exceptions. They made one for Pat White who happened to hail from the same West Virginia program as Austin. Um, maybe that's not a good example.

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has told me he asks himself this question when he's evaluating a player that is for whatever reason not of prototypical size or weight or speed: "Does he walk on water?"

(The phrase originates from the fact Jesus Christ walked on water on the sea of Galilee. So did Peter for a couple of steps before he got tackled by a blitzing lack of faith).

The point is most people who are not the Son of God cannot walk on water. They simply aren't so incredibly great that the field tilts in their favor when they step on it. They simply aren't so amazing that one can forget that they are too short or light or slow or whatever other failing the player may have.

Most players do not walk on water.

Barry Sanders did.

Thurman Thomas did.

Darrell Green did.

But the list of non-prototypes in my mind isn't much longer. And while looking at Austin on tape suggests he floats very well on water, and perhaps even swims like a fish in the water, he's not walking on the surface. He's not Sanders-Thomas-Green great.

Austin caught 114 passes for 1,289 yards last season. He caught 12 touchdown passes. He was also used out of the backfield and has a career 9.5 yards per carry average. His game against Oklahoma in which he gained 572 total yards was perhaps the greatest individual performance of the season by a collegian.

But ...

His 11.3 yards per reception is not suggesting NFL deep threat. He sometimes double-catches passes, perhaps a result of his smaller hands. That's not a big deal in college because the game is slower. But in the NFL, receivers who juggle and must recatch the football often get drilled between the first catch and the attempted second catch.

I watched Austin cutups and I saw him be very, very friendly with the sideline. He searches out the sideline a lot to avoid contact, which is natural and smart for a player his size but could be an issue for some coaches.

I also saw a little high stepping a few times. Yeah, Miami coach Joe Philbin would love that.

Don't get me wrong. Fake GM Salguero would love Tavon Austin on his team. But not at the expense of the No. 12 overall draft pick. Late in the first round? Maybe. In the second round, yes. But in the upper third of the first round, the durability concerns caused by his size, the fact he'll never be an outside receiver because he simply lacks the wingspan to help the quarterback out there, and the good but not great hands give me pause.

By the way, some folks will look at the Austin highlight tape below and believe him to be a faster Wes Welker. Don't be fooled. Wes Welker towers over Austin and outweighs him by at least 15 pounds. Welker is built much more compact and strong. Austin is lean.

That's another thing. One scout I talk to a lot told me he has questions about Austin's affinity for the weight room. The scout loves the kid's spunk and swag and all that. But he did mention the weight room issue.

So, to answer the most asked question I get: I don't believe the Dolphins will be drafting Tavon Austin at No. 12. Not unless he finds a way to walk on water between now and draft day.

dusty,

Einfeld's wife's a supermodel. She'll find lots more local work in Southern California than west hell Florda.

I believe that move was based solely on loacation, location, location!

Martin hopefully improves and sticks to one position whether LT or RT. I am happy with his work overall last year as a rookie.

Fluker in the 2nd sounds good I also would keep Armstead and Watson in mind as well especially if one fell to the 3rd rd.

.......I think all the LT scenarios point to them drafting one at 12.....rather than spending big bucks and two picks for Albert....or drafting a RT and going with the Martin switch to LT.....

...it's worth repeating...LT is our biggest question mark.....

we have the money, so use one of our 2nd rd picks and get albert. problem solved and we still have a first rounder to get a corner

dusty,

Because of what Albert has just done, its even more important to have under contract before he comes to Miami. Or 2014's offseason could become a disaster.

Plus we lose a 2nd rd pick to boot. Albert could hold this fo hostage. Im not sure if he can even be franchised again.

There is a reason some of these guys are signed to a one year deal. Clemons, Keller and Grimes. They either need to prove they are elite and deserve a longer contract OR they are a stopgap and guys will be drafted to replace them next year. I believe we will draft a TE, Safety and Cornerback. The Dolphins made a HUGE mistake passing on Gronkowski, not just once but TWICE on the draft. Now is the time to get three rookies in the draft. Now is the time to get a pass rusher opposite Wake. Now is the time to get that receiver who can replace Wallace in the future. 5 draft picks in first 82. Legitimately all 5 should be NFL starters or close to it. TE, WR, CB, Safety, DT. Those are my first 5 picks right there.

Philbin..like all HC's is a film watcher....maybe he has seen that Martin moves better on the right side....and hasn't the agility on the Left..

...some OL's just can't make that switch at the pro level..

....moves better to his right...handles the inside move better with his left hand...

...I dunno...but I just believe that if they were convinced...Eric Martin would already be signed...

...we just don't know for sure...

...and that's what makes it funner....

yesterday i agree, thats why i said sign him oif they do deal

I hope Vernon is a piece to that puzzle but I agree we need to draft another DE this year. John Simon if he is there in the 3rd rd although his stock is rising. He was a leader on a undefeated buckeye defense. Most likely a 2nd rder though I think

Armando, personally I liked your "Hound Dog" analogy of a few weeks back. Even if you took some grief over it-LOL.

But this weeks analogy is "Da Shyt"!!!!

Tackled by a blitzing lack of Faith!

That is how it feels in our moments of weakness. I'm not particularly a religious Man(I am, but I believe in our Nordic Traditions)but I just love the mental images this analogy elicits.

Good Stuff Mando!!!!

What I don't understand is why they would pay Albert 8 mil but wouldn't pay Long 8 mil?

B33RCA53 that's the point...they don't want to!!!!

Martin was a total turnstile at LT. Remember Tannehill was shutout when Martin played LT.

Should've paid Jake Long......

Ody, you are the only poster here that has had a hottie in 5 years. Please tell us your secrets..

p.s. Do your hotties call you a hottie?

BECAUSE THEY"RE IDIOTS!

Urban Meyer telling about Simon's leadership... Could be a steal if lands in the 3rd

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmBpjGMk0gI

Ireland mistakenly thought Long wanted to play for this garbage team. LOL

Jake was becomimg a liability , physically......so they valued him lowerr than he did himself....ergo....bon voyage...

..ok ..what's done is past...new episode...

...need a LT....Albert will cost....more than they want to give up...BUCKS and PICKS,,

...chapter 3.......how bout Martin at LT and sign or draft a RT..(this might still happen)

...or Chapter 3 revised....draft a LT at 12..whether he falls to that pick...or you trade up to get him..

either way costing probably only one 2nd round pick, and much smaller bucks...

..seems simple fom where I sit...dunno...could be all wet here....

HEY GUYS LET'S ALL THINK OF A FOOTBALL SCENARIO THAT JUST MAY HAPPEN THIS YEAR. THE DOLPHINS AND PATS ARE PLAYING FOR THE AFC EAST CROWN WITH NE LEADING BY 4 WITH ABOUT 8 MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME. NE IS DRIVING TO PUT THE FINS AWAY WHEN THE FINS INTERCEPT BRADY INSIDE DOLPHIN TERRITORY. NOW TANNEHILL HAS THE BALL. WOULDN'T YOU RATHER HAVE WALLACE,HARTLINE, GIBSON,BESS AND AUSTIN GOING AGAINST THE PATRIOT DEFENSE. C'MON HOW DO THEY MATCH UP? YOU CAN PUT AUSTIN IN THE BACKFIELD AND MATCH HIM WITH ONE OF THE PATS SLOW LB!! IF THEY BLITZ IT'S GOING TO LEAVE SOME ONE MATCHED UP ONE/ONE AND IF IT'S WALLACE THAN IT'S A TOUCHDOWN. IF IT'S KELLER THAN IT'S A BIG GAIN DOWN THE SEAM.IF IT'S HARTLINE IT'S WIDE OPEN ACROSS THE MIDDLE AND IF IT'S GIBSON HE'S ONE /ONE. THE PATRIOTS ONLY HOPE IS YOU BETTER GET TO T-HILL AND MAKE THE SACK BECAUSE IF A TACKLE IS MISSED T-HILL CAN STILL RUN. MY POINT IS AUSTIN WILL MAKE IT VERY HARD FOR NE TO MATCH UP WITH US. THE PATS ALREADY HAD A GOOD TE BUT IT DIDN'T KEEP THEM FROM ADDING SO WHY NOT US. WE ALREADY HAVE THE BEST RED ZONE DEFENSE IN THE NFL AND WE JUST GOT FASTER SO I'M SURE IRELAND AND PHILBIN ARE LOOKING AT IF ALL ELSE FAILS IF THEY CAN HOLD YOU TO 3 AND THE FINS GET 7 THAN THAT EVENTUALLY LEADS TO A VICTORY. BACK TO MY SCENARIO!! T-HILL LEADS FINS DOWN THE FIELD TOSSING A GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN TO ?? YOU'RE RIGHT!! TAKE YOUR PICK!! EITHER WAY! FINS WIN PATS LOSE!! AFC EAST IS OURS!! I REST MY CASE!!

mckinnie sucks now. and no thanks on austin

=====================================================

Dusty, McKinnie came in for the Ravens late last season and was Clutch!

I don't think Flacco was touched throughout the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

McKinnie doesn't have too many seasons left, but last season he proved that he can still play at an extremely high level.

Plus, whoever he signs with, he'll be playing for his career. There won't be anymore long term deals in his future. So, he'll be playing for keeps. If he plays great, he gets paid. If not, he's through. And I think that'll be the BEST motivation there is for the next couple of seasons.

Honestly I don't know much about the "Top 3 Tackles" in this draft so that is why I like the idea of Albert. Long wanted >$9m per year and he was hurt the past two seasons. I don't see paying him that much. But Albert only missed 3 games and was still top 10 last year at LT.

IF the reality is that the Top 3 Tackles are really 'locks' than I agree with Craig and Mark that trading up makes sense.

But we do have cap room and IF Albert would sign for $7-8m with some guaranteed money up front the real advantage is that the Fins could use Rnd 1 to fill another need with a starter at another need position. That is the real benefit I see.

Ohhhhhhhkayyyyeeeee...

thats easy, cause albert is good. long was terrible

Trade down a few slots. DRAFT: Eifert TE. Trade back into 1st rd. DRAFT: Austin WR. WOW

The Chicago Cubs are doing a 350 million dollar renovation and arent asking the taxpayers for one dime!

He had a down year in a new system coming off injuries yes. Did he decline? yes. But I still would rather have him and progress further as a team than going after a FA for the same price... I do see your points though.

mckinnie isnt good, would not be a good signing

dusty you know nothing ever.

better than nothing until draft. I doubt Winston will lower his price and Albert will most likely stay put.

So the question remains.....if we refuse to give up 2 picks and BIB bucks for Albert...

...and the FO/staff is not convinced Martin can handle LT (as are some here)...

...what then?????????????....draft a "skill" player or two...

...and see Tanny run????????????

not true at all ross

Miami Cane that also played Tannehill in tennis. Could be the best fit for now.

NFL reporting...

Pat White was supposed to work out for the New York Giants on Tuesday, but he never made it out to the team's practice facility. It appears one of the Giants' NFC East division rivals made sure of that.

White headed to Washington D.C. on Tuesday to visit with the Redskins, a source told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. There hasn't been any speculation about a signing, but there is an obvious interest on the Redskins' part, Rapoport reported.

CBSSports.com reported it's "very likely" White will sign with the Redskins because of the scheme fit.

It's a little surprising that the Redskins are considering signing White before even seeing him, but the move makes some sense. The team only has one healthy quarterback on the roster: Kirk Cousins.

...maybe lane Johnson falls to 12.....it could happen...that would solve a lot..

...so maybe the plan is to wait and see how the first several picks unfold....

well winston sucks so who cares. kc getting desperate on albert issue.

lane johnson will fall to 12 only if sd passes on him, no other team wants him. he wasnt even very good in college. its just that sd and mia both badly need lt. but hes a reach no doubt

dusty...he isn't projected on most of the mocks I've seen as a reach...he is a solid top 15

disagree buster, turn on some big 12 games from last year and tell me what u think then. watch the kst game closely

I'd take Fisher for sure

dusty.....I'm just sayin what the "experts" are projecting....you could be right he could be a bust...

so could ANY one of these dudes....

deal for albert, then draft best corner

..but for me...that's what makes it fun.....that's part of the excitement of sports in general....you never know til they line up and play

from no wr to 9 u dont draft 1 till rd 5

.....hope they deal for Albert.......hope they get him at the right cost.....

okay...I'm pullin for ya dude....

..then draft a corner at 12?....no Eifert...not Austin.........a corner....ok ..which one?

anyone know the comp picks we got?

Mike...Austin will be gettin fitted for his new uniform by Round 5...just sayin...

B33 I think it's a 5th and a 7th...

brb....hunger calls....

thanks. can't remember how those work.

Right now, me and the Smoking Hot Brunette are stepping out. We had Drinks with some friends this weekend. They have some Kissing Gourami's and my Honey liked them. They just called and said we could have them.

You gotta love the old coot, You go Odin.

Just chiming in on some of the earlier post. As far as Keller's one year deal. I heard it was Keller who asked for a 1 year "show me" deal.

Again I think getting Albert for a 2nd and keeping our 1st sounds like a good option.

If we could then find a trade partner to move down and get a corner like Trufant and recoup a 2nd or 3rd it would really rock.

I wonder if some of you trade up people realize your talking about giving up a 1st and 2nd rder for an OT.

It depends, it won't cost much to trade up from 12 to 10 to hop over SD, maybe a 3rd rounder.

=======================================================
According to the trusty point value chart its 100 points which is a low 3rd or high 4th. I guess dependent upon how bad the Titans want to stay there.

If I'm the Titan's i'd gladly take a 4th rder to move down 2 spots and still get who i want.

49ers sign Asomugha. They're not building through free agency and over spending and blah blah blah????

MOST POSTERS DONT SCORE WITH HOTTIES LIKE THE GREAT ODIN,THE GREAT ODIN KNEWS HOW TO WOO A HOTTIE, HE TAKES THEM TO BURGER KING AND TRATS THEM TO DUOBLE WOPERS WITHCHESE WHILE MOST OF THE OTHER DONKYS HERE ONLY TREAT THEM TO GOVERMENT CHESE IN THERE TRAILER.
////THATS WHY ODIN SCORES WHILE THE REST OF YOU DONT.//

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

I'm pretty sure we need a better QB.
