Brady's doing it, but Tannehill and his WRs working also

The NFL was aflutter for about a day this week when the University of Southern California athletics department tweeted a photo of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady working out with new slot receiver Danny Amendola at the USC facilities.

Somewhere, Peyton Manning probably got to thinking about flying to see Wes Welker and matching Brady throw for throw.

Everywhere around the NFL fans were both impressed and depressed -- the first with the idea that Brady is already working on his craft four months before the start of the preseason and secondly, that their hometown QBs might not be keeping pace.

I know some Dolphins fans got worried.

I got emails from a couple.

I had some ask me on twitter if Ryan Tannehill is also working with Miami's receivers or whether he's vacationing and playing tennis as he did last week.

Well, relax.

Someone asked Tannehill about Brady putting in work and Tannehill responded:

"Been having throwing session (sic) w my wideouts for weeks now," Tannehill tweeted.

Within seconds of that tweet, one of the receivers apparently joining those sessions jumped into the fray.

"Ya! Check yo self!" Brian Hartline added in some unremarkable English.

(Just kidding, Brian).

And although I cannot tell you how many Miami receivers are involved in these sessions, or how frequent they are or whether new additions Mike Wallace, Dustin Keller and Brandon Gibson are involved, at least you can know that folks aren't just standing around watching Brady gain chemistry with his newest receiver.

By the way, Brady on Thursday did a session with Terrell Owens.

I would be surprised if the Patriots are going to sign Owens, 39 and two years out of regular-season action, to a contract. And I know the Dolphins aren't going to do it, either.

I say this because I expect those are the next questions someone is bound to ask.

DD,

I agree. There are too many WR's with 3 or 4 years production like Hunter, Hopkins, and Patton who may slip to the 2nd. No need to gamble on Patterson in the 1st.

Will I think miami is a superbowl contendor after nfl draft, no! But I do think the talents there to win afc east and make playoffs yes...I think we still will need at least another good nfl draft after this one...being realistic...

Please don't be ignorant phins fans and start yelling superbowl if we are going to make playoffs, the expectations from some fans gets to far ahead when we get a little success, and players seem to start playing soft down the stretch...

..I was geeking out this weekend and did a little research. I wanted to see how many defensive lineman were drafted in the first round since 2005. The answer was 54. The 2010 draft had 10. Some teams like the Chiefs, The Bucs are addicted to drafting defensive lineman(4 each over this time) The Phins only once(Odrick)..Most of these 54 defensive lineman were total wasted picks. About 1/4 of them are good players, contributors, another 1/4 Pro bowlers-Elite players. So like any position it is an inexact science.

What is obvious is that from 2009-2011 it was the heyday of drafting defensive lineman. 8, 10, 8 the most in any 3 year combo since 2005. Not all of the picks were pass rush specialists. Some were run stuffers. but lets not fool ourselves. The reason teams are putting so much value on this position is to rush the passer. I think that this is ultimately going to be the pick. A defensive lineman. We have taken 1 in 8 years..1

Craig, don't know if you caught what I posted last week regading Hunter but apparently a lot of tems picking in the last half of the first are targetting him. He's hot and for good reason. For teams looking for that big body with the potential to stretch the field ... there's only two guys in this whole draft that will do that for you... Hunter and Rogers. And Rogers has the checkered past so if you are picking in the 20s... you can see what he would make sense.

I also think we could trade bess for a draft pick with addition of wr gibson...maybe trade running back thomas for a pick also....

Patterson will get drafted by Pittsburg. Love them or hate them, the Steelers know how to develop guys like him into great receivers.

..Dolfan Rick. I think we have talked about WR. Hopkins. He is my favorite receiver in the draft. I hold reservations about being able to get him. 1 I think he will be gone by our first pick in round 2. 2. I'm not sure that we are going to take a receiver before some other positions.

Armandos article yesterday basically said that Irelands draft strategy isn't going to BPA. it is going to be need over player. Horizontal drafting is how he described it. So if this is true, and say there is a corner available. Even if Hopkins has a higher grade..It looks like the corner-position of need will be the selection.(just an example scenario)

I would be psyched if we drafted Hopkins..Good player.

Mark,

I did catch your comments on him and I agree. Wouldn't surprise me if some team grabs him late first. There are teams who love to have his skillset on their team.

Bobby,

Possibly. Or perhaps they take Jarvis Jones if he's still there. I see the Steelers as a tema that like to take their WRs a little later and wouldn't be surprised to see them take a guy like Hunter or someone else 2nd or 3rd round. No question they have a need.

..Bobby..I will make a friendly bet with you that the Steelers will not draft Patterson. I know that the odds are not favorable to you. But the Steelers need a corner, the need linebackers. Your right. They do develop receivers. So they don't need to spend a first round pick on one.

Those later round wr's don't even compare to elite talent patterson has!!!! Not even close...not saying we will draft patterson, just he is clearly probowl material...compared to percy harvin in his elusive scrambling and speed, stops and cuts on a dime, can shift gears amazingly fast...runs a 4.2!!!!! Just saying...would you not draft percy harvin talent at #12???? I would draft percy harvin talent in top 5!! What a elusive playmaker brings to your offense...we lost reggie bush wich hurts us...bush done a lot with nothing around him!!!!

Hunter and hopkins not on elite level, pattersons being called a darn "freak" with his playmaking ability...pattersons going to be great in nfl level !!! Plus patterson runs that 4.2 speed, match that with mike wallace and with gibson and keller, no team could double team our playmakers ! Just saying...patterson scares defenses....and he's a value pick!

Lol Darryl, the odds are against me BUT I did see a mock the other day with Pitt taking him. Considering they lost Wallace, I don't consider it a big stretch if he is still there when they pick.

I had the most marvelous Norwegian cheese yesterday called "gjetost." It is a dark cream color and has a wonderfully nutty, caramel taste. Most unique! I would recommend pairing it with a dark Belgian-style ale such as a Chimay trippel or a St. Bernardus No. 12.

You will only find such items at specialty and gourmet stores (Winn-Dixie shoppers need not apply) but it is worth it for those with refined tastes.

PFT updated Draft.

Vols had plenty of depth at wr for patterson to showcase big stats with ball being spread around...plus he was a rookie ...so hunter was starter with experience....his upsides not even close to patterson! He would tell you that when being humble and honest..

Also looks like Andre Smith isn't going to be re signed by Cincy.

My opinion is you gamble on patterson at #12...every pick is a risk..."if not" then we should trade back for extra picks! Not a lot of value falling to #12 that has that kind of value...rounds 2 through 6 is where the values at in this draft....

Don't see steelers in position to draft wr patterson, way to many needs on defense, also lost menndenhall !!!

Jarvis jones is the real deal, he showed us his consistancy playing in "sec"...tuff guy..like him better than notre dame linebacker teo...

Many teams not sold on west virginia qb! He's risky also....I think I would gamble going with matt barkley first...but neither guy is worth a hi first round pick !!!

I do see miami drafting two corners in this draft....that's a must...

I do like we can lineup two tight ends who can catch and make plays with keller and clay....plus we already have some young talent at wr already on roster who may step up and shine..more concerned about running backs? And will offensive line play at elite level every game?

Just watched cb from alabama dee millner on sports science, go see on youtube....dudes crazy athletic!!!

If you don't see so clearly wr pattersons a freak, then you got no eye for athletic talent!!!! Dudes gonna be off the charts great!!! I think wr patterson from vols, and cornerback from alabama millner are the two in this draft that will shine big..after that nobody is worth 1st round talent except a few tackles and defensive ends....I don't even think one qb is worth 1st round pick in this draft...but teams will over react and bite for one...overpay...

Tannenhills gonna do just fine as long as he works hard and stays hungry and leveled headed, ego can destroy most players from staying hungry enough to outwork everybody else...kind of like a hungry fighter who trains his behind off day and night, once he wins the championship he starts to enjoy his fruits as in money, fame, woman...now does not mentally desire to stay hungry to be the best...stay humble!

tannenhills got the ability and skills to have lots of success, last season he done pretty well with what little he had to work with, he had no playmakers compared to andrew luck, rg3, russell wilson...that's a fact! And he had less experience....the kids no dummy, he is doing just fine...always gonna be hatters, marino, elway, jim kelly, joe montana, tom brady, peyton manning, warren moon, all had hatters always saying negative words...can't pay those loosers no attention...

Dude, get over west virginia "slot wr" tavon austin, we already got two now with the signing of gibson...why would we overload with slot wr's? Don't make a bit of commen since....we need a tackle, running back, tight end, and a wr like patterson, then two corners, safety, defensive end before another slot wr!!!!!

So, gibson and bess will fight it out...I do think miami will trade bess with the signing of gibson now...

Miami should try to add more draft picks in rounds 2 to 4....I would try to trade wr bess & rb thomas for picks.....and I would take all those picks in rounds 7 and later and package them for one more highest pick possible..even think about trading #12 first round pick for multiple 2nd round picks...

We need:
Wr like patterson
Two corners who can start right away
Tackle who is physically nasty
Defensive end who can be relentless...
Safety if qaulity is there...
Rb ..Bigger "faster" version of daniel thomas...
Tight end who can block and make plays catching..

That's 8 qaulity players we still need after big spending in free agency...."8"

Dolphins need "8" qaulity players to be pretty set...we have 5 of those picks in first three rounds already...so if we draft solid, we need 3 more qaulity picks and we are rolling big time!!!! Let's go phins

I won't be surprised if no qb's are drafted in first round...the value is not there with qaulity...maybe second round...but won't be surprised to see one or two teams reach for qb's up into first round...this drafts not loaded with franchise qaulity qb's!!!!!!!!!

Texas a&m has some nice players in draft!!! Sure miami has eyed some!

I think our biggest need is two young starting corners!!! Then left tackle, defensive end....

And then we would "like" to add another wr, te, rb,safety....

But I do think irelands prioritys are two corners, tackle, defensive end..then he will try to address other needs...

The jets will end up lowering their asking price for revis to the bucs! Watch....they need that cap space and draft picks to start stock piling to rebuild...when rebuilding you don't want a veteran player like revis, you wanna move him fast before draft...tampa should not give up their hi first round pick for a veteran player coming off a major injury!

Don't see us drafting a tight end until next season...we got charles clay and dustin keller besides rookie from last year....running back is questionable....probably not....safet is questionable also...

Major must haves are :
Two corners, tackle, defensive end...

Geno smith not worth a first round pick...but some team will over reach for him!

Tannenhill would be a lock as the #1 first round draft pick if he was in this years nfl draft, all experts saying this...

Warmack would be a very solid pick! But are we gonna be a ground and pound team to invest so much into our offensive line? Last I heard was they were building for tannenhill to have an air attack game???

I know balance is key, but reality is we may not get every single need met this years draft, might have to wait until next year for a few needs to be met...main thing is we continue to keep main focus of building through nfl draft..I do think the free agents will boost us a lot...

Bad bust draft picks for miami dolphins were:

Teddy ginn jr.
Pat white
Cecil collins
Chad henne
Sean smith

Best draft picks for miami was:

Dan marino
Mark clayton
Mark duper
John offerdahl
Zack thomas
Jason taylor
Sam madison
Patrick surtain
Louis oliver
Richmond webb
Larry czonka
Natte moore
Jim jenson
Reggie roby
Pete stayonovich
Ronnie brown
Randy mcmichael
Chris chambers
Marco coleman
Tim bowens
Jake long
M. Pouncey

Egnew, keller, clay.....I think we can get some production out of these three....

Ireland did pretty good to put miami in great position this offseason for free agency cap money, and also getting us a stock pile of nfl draft picks...parcells had nothing to do with that!!!!! So for all you bashing ireland I see he set up miami to have the biggest off season in all nfl .....that's just not luck, that's doing his job pretty good...and irelands not finished and ross will keep him around until..

Only thing bill parcells done in miami is leave a mess for ireland to clean up, and parcells quit on the team...as he always does on teams...walk out on them!

Dion jordan will be drafted by the eagles, he played for eagles head coach chip kelly also...eagles want an elite pass rusher anyways...so won't happen...

Would love to see dee millner or patterson taking in first round....

Salguero has to throw in the smart alecbaldwin remarks. Besides that, he does give some insight regarding the Phins.

Last years rookies need to really step up big this season.....rookie seasons over with...put on their big boy pants now like coach sparanno use to say.....lol

I wish nfl would change scheduling nfl games, extend season longer...and yea ad in more bye weeks....we wod still have plenty of football on tv.'.season is to short, off zeasons way way to long.....or at least over lap seasons much better so nfl games are not on same seasons as nfl.....spread this out so we got football to watch longer throughout the year.....think of the fans...the ones who spend the money..
