Branden Albert and Dolphins talking again

The on-again, off-again talks between the Dolphins and the Branden Albert camp are on-again and they are quite hot right now, a club source is telling me this morning.

On Tuesday I sent out multiple texts to club sources and, as expected, got the silent treatment across the board. (I'v been told by sources that when I don't get responses, that usually means something is happening). But this morning I got one response and this team source tells me the Dolphins remain interested in Albert, are talking with Albert's camp, want to give him a physical, and will be talking to the Chiefs about him in the coming hours or days.

So this possible trade for the Kansas City Chiefs left tackle -- derailed recently by the Chiefs' wanting high draft compensation for him, the Dolphins declining to make a significant and tangible offer, and the Albert contract demands -- is back on track.

There are still hurdles apparently so it is too early to say this will definitely happen. But my sense is we're getting to that point where all the parties want answers and the answer is going to be get it done. The NFL draft begins tomorrow at 8 p.m.

I cannot say with certainty, but my speculation is the Dolphins would like to know by that time what Albert's health status is. That means they'd probably like to get him a physical by then. It's possible the Chiefs won't allow a physical before a trade is agreed to and make the trade contingent on that physical -- as is custom in most trades. So already you have different agendas at work.

It remains interesting to me that the draft-choice or player compensation to the Chiefs is more of a sticking point for the Dolphins than the contract with the player.

It boggles because the Albert camp wants significant money. Reports have been that Albert, who is currently signed to a $9.8 million franchise tender, wants to average $9 million per season and he wants it structured so that he's protected from being cut after just one year. The $9 million is elite left tackle money and one can argue that Albert is a good player but not an elite player.

The Dolphins, which have approximately $9 million in salary cap space now but get another $10 million after June 1 (from the release of Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett), have the necessary cap room to sign Albert and eventually sign their draft picks.

" this game is still won in the trenches. You need to protect your QB and get to the other teams QB. The rest of the fams want 'twinkle toe' guys to get the job done but there not the the guys that are there when it really matters."

Well said, Craig M. It's amateurish to focus entirely on the scoring players without equal focus on the players who make scoring possible.

WHPs,

Sorry man....missed the name change. LOVE it!!

I think the Chargers are tight against the cap. I'm not convinced they can make it happen by adding Albert. I just don't see it. and I'm also not convinced these divsion rivals are able to get together on this.

Craig,
Totally agree with you. Even if you want Albert, it makes no sense to move that quickly on him. We have many options to fall on and have all the leverage here. Let's see how the draft plays out and then decide where are the biggest holes to fill.

kc needs pix, this season.

Thank goodness we're only a day away from beginning to find out, as one hc famously put it:

"What hell is going on out there!" V. Lombardi

Got to agree that Moore looks like the best pure pass rusher in this draft.

Mark,

Plus no one knows this kid better than Sherman so IF we take him then we could be getting a steal.

So Craig M...or Mark....or anybody that knows....

do you think its possible that Martin starts the season @ LT?

Posted by: 2 watt | April 24, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Then screw them. If they want an overpaid RT, then let them have one. We should make the best decision for our team and not get hasty.

I get VERY frustrated when I read comments like, 'We've picked linemen high before and where did that get us'. Sorry it's idiotic!!

We hadn't picked a QB in the first round in 30 years before last year. Is it possible that might be the problem? We've pissed around every which way at QB, rather than pick a guy high and invest in him. If you believe that position is the most important on the field, as I do, then it's clear that has had much more to do with our lack of success than drafting linemen high.

It's also clear that some fans only want to be entertained but being entertained doesn't necessarily mean Super Bowls. Tons of examples like that in the league today. Tons...

make it a 3.

I have no edictions about Thursdays draft....only epectations that the team will improve....

irecorn holds the cards in this, imfo.

predictions....

Can't downplay the need for a physical BEFORE the draft...if this were a normal trade, time would not be essential. However, with the draft emminent, it's important to have the results in hand. Once the pick is exchanged for the player, KC will use it, and the only remedy would be future compensation if the trade is nullified due to a failed physical.

the reality is that now that the jets have gotten a 2nd 1st round pick the dolphins now need both of their 2nd round picks along with our 1st rounder @ 12

there is no way the dolphins need to give up more than a 3rd rounder to get this guy and no way they should

Dashi Sense Speaking

(Great Post By The Way Mando)

I'm The Biggest Dolphin Homer. And Would Love For B. Albert To Sign For Nothing($6-7m).

BUT...

If B. Albert Is As Good As He Is And We Are Spending A 2nd Round Pick. Why Shouldn't B. Albert Get Paid More Than J. Long? He Is Better Than Jake? He Is Healthier To?

So Craig M...or Mark....or anybody that knows....

do you think its possible that Martin starts the season @ LT?

Kris,

Ha!!! I don't know a damn thing. I'm just a fan but IMO--only if there's an injury.

There's NO WAY you even consider negotiating with Albert's agent if you think Martin who is both younger & cheaper can realistically be your LT. I'm just hoping Martin will improve from last year @ RT otherwise Philbin is going to have to consider starting Garner.

Kris,

I think it's possible. I'm not saying it's likely....but I think it's possible.

If I was GM, I'd be doing everything I could to get the Raiders to trade back. If Fisher were there (and I don't know that he will be), then that's the guy I want. I couldn't care less what the price is to move up 9 spots. One of the five most important positions on the field. I see Fisher as being the real deal.

If Fisher's gone, and Johnson's still there at 6, then I've already got a deal done with the Browns.

If I'm a bettingm man, Kris, I think that's how this all plays out. Albert's a fallback.

The money is not the issue...they can manipulate the numbers with guarantee money in conjunction with per anum dolars...the issue is FIRST durability AND then, which # pick we have to give for him....and finally the number of guaranteed years...but, again, that is negotiable AFTER the first two issues are dealt with..

Sorry man....missed the name change. LOVE it!!

I think the Chargers are tight against the cap. I'm not convinced they can make it happen by adding Albert. I just don't see it. and I'm also not convinced these divsion rivals are able to get together on this.

Craig,

I think the name change is warranted with the additions of Wallace, Gibson, & Keller. Does that mean I wouldn't like to add a top TE or a bigger RB to go with Miller??? Absolutely not. But I think the people who are advocating that we take Tavon Austin or Patterson or Lacey @ 12 are way off.

My Final 2013 Mock Draft: Trade Down, Extra 2nd

1. Damontre Moore
2a Larry Warford
2b Kwann Short DT Purdue
2c Brandon Albert KC Trade
3a Darius Slay CB
3b Stedman Bailey
4. Marcus Lattimore/Tyrann Matthieu Availability
5a AJ Klien ILB Iowa ST
5b Brandon Jenkins OLB FSU
6. No Pick
7a BPA
7b BPA

This has been the best predaft ever. I am glad it is tomorrow, but sad the speculating will end

Trading up makes no sense.

Miami should of learned from their past mistake with drafting Jake Long over Matt Ryan. When's the last time a LT won a game? Answer: Never.

LTs are important to the success of a team but so are the many other holes this team has which are considered premium postions like CB and passrusher. Why trade away all the ammuniton you have just to fill just one need, the LT spot and then be left bare at so many other spots?

If Miami trades up or back I will be disappointed. Miami has 11 draft picks whats the over/under of how many of them actually contribute? I say its about 4 that actually have a chance to contribute and that might be high. How many make the team? 6 or 7. Miami doesn't need any more picks.

Rdubs....sad the speculating will end? you gotta be kidding, cuz!!!! lol

fri.? more pix

WHPs,

I get excited about the prospects of a guy like Eiffert at 12. I like this guy a lot. He'd be a great target for Tannehill for years to come. I believe there's a chance we take him if we can't get that LT. Keller would be a great role model and take the pressure of the kid for a year.

I don't see us picking at #12 if there is any way possible to trade down....with this draft depth, and the value falling into the 2nd round, it's a deal Ireland won't pass up if it's there for him....

Kris, are you honestly asking ME what my thoughts are towards J Martin?? haha, come on man, I'm scared to put him at RT.

Who knows, depending who we swap with in the first round, we might still get Eifert !!

I say let Albert go, Take Austin in the 1st, Armstead OT in the second alonf with Amerson CB. Armstead may be raw but he is a good blocker and will be there longer than 5 years. You can take Dion Sims Te who is the best blocker of the bunch and can catch the ball. WEashington DE can also be taken in the 5-6 rounds. SAVE THE MONEY AND DRAFT PICKS!!

There's no guarantees on future injuries or durability with any player in the NFL. However IF we trade for Albert I think that it will be clear that our coaches & medical staff are more comfortable with Albert than Jake. Ireland would NOT just give up a 2nd round pick for a LT when we COULD have signed Long for the same amount of money or maybe even less than what we may pay for Albert if the coaches wanted Long back.

WHP, if by some freak of nature we end up getting Lane Johnson @12 then D Moore - I will be one happy fukker this weekend.

I would trade both our 2nds if we still had them to trade up for Moore.

That last post was to you Buster.

Thank for the opinons....

I got meetings for the rest of the day....

enjoy...

WHP...very true, but one would still want a current physical performed by your team Doctors ...that's standard...

CraigM,

You should love my final mock at 12:13 PM. You get exactly what you loudly drummed for all offseason. Pass rusher 1st pick.

Waterford 2nd rd seems to be a perfect fit for Philbins athletic zine blocking oline. Kwann Short is quality at DT and gets pressure up the middle as a pass rusher. Darius Slay may be perfect as a #2 corner opposite Brent Grimes.

Stedman Bailey pick 3b? If he's still there he;s the no brainer pick. 4th rd, Lattimore or Matthieu still on the board, again no brainer.

AJ Klien gives quality depth at ILB, Brandon Jenkins was a pass rush terror at FSU before being injured. He should be a complete steal in the 5th rd.

5a AJ Klien ILB Iowa ST

Hey, I also like very much that player at the 5th round.

For me :
3b. Aaron Dobson WR Marshall
4. T.J. McDonald S USC

@ AndyNJ...all the more reason to maximize picks..more picks multiplied by whatever success rate you use equals more successes....I'd like to have 2 dozen picks...and that's why teams jockey for the undrafted FA's afterward....it's always been a numbers game...

I think its more likely the fins trade up with the browns for their 1st and 2nd 2nd rounder and draft lane johnson before a trade for albert happens

WHP, if by some freak of nature we end up getting Lane Johnson @12 then D Moore - I will be one happy fukker this weekend.

I would trade both our 2nds if we still had them to trade up for Moore.

Mark,

You never know. It could happen. I remember my jaw hitting the floor when Ponder & Locker were taken in the top ten two years ago. If THAT could happen then Geno Smith & Barkley or maybe some other QB like Manuel or Nassib could go in the top 10. Is that insane??? Of course it is but then again so was Ponder & Locker.

Andy,

Respectfully they have CBs and pass rushers. What they don't have is a LT.

I guess I could say to you, how many games has a CB or passrusher won? It's not really a strong argument, is it?

Last time I checked it takes 53 players to win. The best QB in the league doesn't win the Super Bowl every year. Not even close. But it is clear that the top teams invest heavily in their OL. The Niners just paid big bucks to re-sign their RT. So I'm not getting this idea that anyone can play LT.

Dustin Keller was a complete "security blanket" for Sanchez in NYC. No way do I believe TE becomes the #12 pick with Keller signed over the offseason.

The greatest reason why is because prior to signing Keller this fo knows there a 90% chance Eiffert's available at #12. So why sign Keller in the first place?

YG,

I'll spend some time looking at it. Thanks for the heads up.

My biggest FEAR is that Ireland trades back and takes a guy like Werner, as he did with Odrick and thinks he's getting great value. That's what I'm NOT in favour of. I agree with Mark to an extent that we should be getting talent, not 'perceived' value.

Albert - COGS - Pouncey - Womack - Martin....

...how would that be?

I say let Albert go, Take Austin in the 1st, Armstead OT in the second alonf with Amerson CB. Armstead may be raw but he is a good blocker and will be there longer than 5 years. You can take Dion Sims Te who is the best blocker of the bunch and can catch the ball. WEashington DE can also be taken in the 5-6 rounds. SAVE THE MONEY AND DRAFT PICKS!!

Cateye,

Austin??? Really??? I'm not sure he lasts more than three seasons in the NFL.

Andy, Warmack has been projected as being a special player. I'm assuming he takes Jerry's spot, and does Jerry slide over to RT? AND do you advocate us signing Albert? AND giving up a 2nd? Here's my problem, you've done ALL THAT for the oline, and you STILL only have a 1 yr option at TE, you STILL have a group of CBs that all belong in the MASH unit, you STILL have a 1 yr option at S, you STILL have 1 legit pass-rusher and you still have question marks at RB, AND you're one pick short.

My issue isn't really with getting a G in the 1st round (if he's BPA), it's giving up so much for what I don't believe is an elite LT (Albert).

I say ditch the Albert trade, and upgrade via the Draft, and maybe that means there's a position or two that has to wait a year before it gets fully resolved. Maybe we have to go with Jerry or Martin at LT. Maybe we get a lower-rd LT and see what they can do. But we MUST have a CB, that shouldn't be a question with anyone on this blog. We MUST have another TE to develop so we don't remain the worst TE team in the league and fall behind any more. Those are MUSTS. To me, the other MUST is pass-rusher (or else watch Brady have all day to kill us twice a year). I didn't even mention a WR (which Philbin likes to get in rd 2).

We have more holes that picks. And knowing all the picks won't work out, it's not the year to fix the LT position by giving away a high-rd pick. I wouldn't budge unless it's a 4th-rd or later pick on Albert.

Sorry everyone who wants Star L. at 12, but when a player has a rep for taking plays off and dissapearing in 2nd halves, I just could not pull the trigger at 12 on someone like that. And his college stats are really not that great. I just see him as a Soliai clone.
I know Ireland won't pick Fluker as he is not a system fit. I just have the feeling it's going to be Woerner if we don't move up, which hopefully we won't.

Posted by: Adrian Solorza | April 24, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Stedman Bailey is ranked 1 spot higher the the wr ramkings this draft. I like Bailey at slot better because he has much greater college production.

However, if Bailey isn't there, I would gladly take Aaron Dobson. If both are there, for me its Bailey by a nose.

Ireland's past mistake's are coming full circle again:

In 2010 Miami had many needs and could have filled them with stars yet they traded way back to recoup a 2nd rounder. The picks netted Miami Jared Odrick and Koa Misi. These guys are meat and potatoes players and are a dime a dozen, average starters.

Miami's needs were:
1. Safety - Earl Thomas (14)
2. Pass Rusher - Jason Pierre Paul (15)
3. WR - Demaryius Thomas (22)
- Dez Bryant (24)
4. Oline - Mike Iupati (17)
- Mike Pouncey (18)

AndyNJ, Warmack isn't a zone blocking athletic guard needed in the W/C offense. He's not a scheme fit.

WHP...very true, but one would still want a current physical performed by your team Doctors ...that's standard...

Buster,

No doubt. I know it's against NFL rules but my guess is that our doctors have already checked him out. I just see this trade going down after the first round.

YG,

When you look at Ireland's pattern the last three years he has drafted guys and had them learn from a vet. Miller is an example, as is Martin. It could be that Egenew is being used in that mold too. Martin was taken with the possibility of being Long's replacement at LT. It could still happen.

I believe Eiffert learning from a go pro like Keller for a year could be a great stepping stone for him into the NFL.

All this talk about cap hits ... I think Darelle Revis has the most interesting contract in the NFL.

Flat hit of $16M per year. Quarterback money which is what he wanted. However, no upfront money and no dead money attached to the contract at all.

In other words, he has to be worth that money every year to see one cent or he gets cut. No cap implications to the Bucs at all. Fair to both sides.

CraigM,

Its now seeming to make perfect sense to with the Sherman connection scooping up a falling Damontre Moore in a trade down scenario.

We don't need him to be a superstar right away, just 8-10 sacks 1st season. No pressure. LOL...

I really don't care if Miami trades up or down or stays put. If they trade up it has to be for either of the top two LT's, only them. Without mortgaging the house!

I agree with Craig here. I don't care about sexy picks. Offensive Line is extremely important in a pass happy league. JUST LOOK AT THE NE Offensive Line. Tannehil needs to be protected.

If they trade back it can't be too far back. 5 - 7 picks tops!!

If they stay put them I'm all for Cooper, Warmack, and even Eifert. They is a lot of same value guys all over the 2nd and 3rd round, which means the more picks you have the better chances we land a golden goose.

FORGET ALBERT!!!!

Andy,

I don't get the need to keep focussing on Ireland's past mistakes. EVERY team makes them. It seemed like the right move at the time, or at least I get the logic.

When he just came off such a good draft like last year, with four potential starters why the need to keep going back and looking at 2 years ago?

If no Johnson or Albert I can see the fins drafting cooper at 12 and in the 3rd drafting the NC OT Brandon Williams who would have been a first round pick if it wasnt for injury. They could also sign Winston as insurance for the RT spot in case Williams gets hurt. I like cooper alot and think he would solidify the line.

AndyNJ, do you understand scheme fit. Warmack may be a great guard, but not in a zone blocking scheme where you need speed (5.45 40) and to be athletic.

WHP...how bout if Ireland WAITS until KC makes their pick...presumably Joeckel..then offers a 3rd Rounder for Albert, take it or leave it...then KC has to squat or get off the pot....
