« Two meetings with potential draftees that truly interest | Main | Annual free agency lull comes to the Dolphins »

Coaches sometimes hurt the personnel process

During the Bill Parcells era the Dolphins did what most teams do this time of year. The personnel department tried to mesh with the coaching staff and come to a consensus agreement on the worth of draft eligible players.

This is an interesting shotgun wedding that occurs every spring because, let's face it, it's at some level dumb to do this. Coaches are paid to coach. They are paid to develop talent that is right in front of their faces. They are paid to maximize an individual.

They're not paid to project. They're not paid to evaluate.

Indeed, most coaches are not great talent evaluators.

Yet, year after year, NFL teams ask coaches to do the very thing they are not specifically paid to do: Evaluate talent.

And it has become quite clear to me in recent days that while the Dolphins personnel department of 2008-2010 had its share of misses, that was augmented by the fact the coaching staff was generally not great at evaluating college talent.

For example:

In 2010, the Dolphins were asked to serve as one of the coaching staffs at the Senior Bowl. Me, being a dummy, assumed this would give the staff firsthand knowledge of the players they were coaching and that would be a draft-day advantage.

Wrong.

During that week of practices, both head coach Tony Sparano and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo fell in love with a guard/tackle from Mississippi. His name is John Jerry.

They liked Jerry's aggressiveness. They liked his punch. And because they liked his awareness and intelligence so much, they tried the player who played right guard and right tackle in college on the left side because he was smart enough, they reported, to handle the move.

Moreoever, Googs also reported Jerry had no issues learning quickly.

And so on draft day 2010, the Dolphins looked at their board in the third round -- the one that had tight end Jimmy Graham from Miami still sitting there -- and picked Jerry instead.

In training camp the team tried him at left guard. He was actually the starting left guard the first day of camp. And that lasted only one day because Jerry was a disaster there. He couldn't figure out the position at all.

And later in the year when Jerry's inability to get on the field came up in a conversation with a Miami personnel man, DeGulielmo, the same coach that months earlier had said Jerry was bright and had no issues picking up the system, reported that Jerry's problem was he wasn't picking up the system.

And thus Jerry couldn't do either of the things Sparano and Googs reported to the personnel department that he would be able to do. He couldn't make the transition to left guard. And he couldn't learn seamlessly.

Coaches hurting the personnel evaluation process.

Two years earlier, the Dolphins had been searching for a quarterback. And as I've recounted to you before in this blog and in my column, the Dolphins sent out Sparano, offensive coordinator Dan Henning as well as general manager Jeff Ireland to see, meet with and work out three quarterbacks.

Matt Ryan.

Joe Flacco.

Chad Henne.

And Henning, who fancied himself something of a quarterback guru, came back convinced, CONVINCED, that Henne was and would be every bit the equal of Ryan and Flacco. CONVINCED!

And he reported this to his close friend Bill Parcells. Sparano and Ireland had some misgivings but generally went along with that opinion as well.

Obviously, in hindsight, we now know that Henne isn't the equal to the other two because despite his fine arm and great work ethic and prototype body, something just doesn't click for Henne as an NFL QB. Something inate is missing. And so he is and will always remain a backup type while Flacco carried his team in the playoffs and won the Super Bowl and Ryan is among the top 10 QBs in the league.

Coaches acting as personnel men.

Why do teams do it?

It's interesting to me that personnel men don't don whistles and go try to coach players during training camp. Why do coaches get to play personnel men in February and March?

I will say this:

Recently, on my way back from the NFL annual meeting in Phoenix, I shared a flight with ESPN insider Chris Mortensen. We chatted about a number of issues and shared and compared notes on different things and one thing he told me perked my ears.

He reported that in talking to various NFL people the word he was getting was that current Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was gaining respect as a solid talent evaluator.

One source told Mort that Philbin is the best coaching evaluator he's ever worked with.

Now, that doesn't mean Philbin is ready to take over the Miami personnel department. Indeed, he still has to prove he's a good head coach because today his career record is 7-9.

But if the opinion relayed by Mort's sources turn out to be fact, perhaps the synergy the Miami coaching staff and personnel staff are forced to share this time of year won't be a hinderance.

Not like it was in previous years.

DC/WNPs,

I agree with your points. What I don't get is all this 'Ireland is arrogant and stubborn' crap that we've had to listen to. How he 'only picks based on the model that Parcells subscribed to'. It is and was bullshyte!

Parcells NEVER would have drafted Tannehill at 8 last year and he never would have given Wallace the money the 'Phins gave him this year in FA. It's very clear to those paying attention that Philbin and Ireland are working in tandem to improve this team. Ireland's the GM and he could chose to do things HIS way. It's clear he's taking input from Philbin to get the players Philbin wants on the team and he's getting rid of the players he doesn't want. That to me sounds like a recipe that has a chance for success.

WNP, everything is a cycle, I remember when the Pats were horrendous, and one day they will be horrendous again. Nothing is forever. Brady is a year older, injuries and what were once good trades become bad. All I'm saying is I believe the Pats peaked a few years ago.

We Need Playmakers,

We must be sharing a brain today because I too thought Graham could be a Woodley type. He's finally healthy and sort of showed some flashes late last season so maybe he does but I was on board with Mando at the time as Graham being who I wanted.

And I flew to Miami for the Sunday night Dolphins-jet opener cause I too thought maybe just maybe Im wrong on Henne and he has a chance to be good but it was false hope he's going to make a good backup in the league and will put up numbers here and there in spot starts but over a 16 game schedule, never.

You nailed it bro! Word for word.

I was always a Parcells supporter and big believer in him and admired his coaching style. He was a throwback but at the end he took the money and sucked at his craft and again Im still a huge Parcells fan but he was washed up in his last go around.

Andy,

I was EXTREMELY confident that Parcells was going to turn this mess around. In the end a great coach doesn't always make a great executive/personnel guy.

Bobby,

I agree with you on the Pats. I think their 'kharma' has caught up with them.

However, I also agree with WNPs. Until we actually start beating them consistently they are still the team to beat. I am SO tired of going to Buffalo to watch us play and we lay an egg. We need to be more consitent and beat the teams we are supposed to beat on a regular basis. We also need to put in better efforts against the Pats. Hopefully this is the start of something.

This is great work Armando, keep it up!

Craig,

Maybe Ireland was competent before Philbin came to Miami. I really don't know who decided on who or what when Parcells was here but clearly Philbin is more competent than Sparano. If we can REALLY hit on 3 (maybe even 4???) of our picks in this draft & we can stay healthy then I say look out b/c this rebuild was FAST.

Parcells,

He was a freaking mercenary at the end. A gun for hire and he missed the "hit" his last time around. A total failure in Miami. Average player after average player to complete bust players.

Ireland the jury is still out and he's doing everything he can to save himself and career. Wallace was a great start and adding Gibson with Hartline and Bess on O was a huge start in the right direction for a glaring weakness. Not budging on Jake Boselli-Long. Admitting the addition of Burnett and Dansby werent cutting and filling those spots with faster, younger, upgrades.

This draft is his career. Let's see what he can do.

Just to add to Benny Malone's post at 11.59... I watched "Path to the Draft" at 6pm, where they showcased Miami's upcoming draft. They interview Volin for the piece. Those guys were unbiased and very professional in they're evaluation... then NFLCH throws "Fat Boy, broke azzz Sapp" out there talking up Dansby and how he was the cornerstone of the Miami defense and how Ellerbe is unproven. In every LBer rating I've seen, Ellerbe graded out in the top 3 available... where Dansby was in the 20's... (BTW, Had anyone given him a job yet)... I can plainly recall Sapp talking up Ellerbe and how well he was going to take over for Lewis.... I just cannot wrap my mind around the NFLCH... They definitely have hate for Miami... Not certain why.. I guess because they are not the 4 teams that NFLCH rant on and on and on about day in and day out? If your teams isn't San Fran, Seattle, Philly or NE... you may as well watch cartoons until season starts... I have lost what little respect I had for most of that shows people, I actually believe ESPN is gaining on them in the respectable media reporting category...

Andy,

It always sucks when a really good college player never gets a chance to make his mark in the NFL b/c of injuries. I hope Graham's injuries are finally behind him.

As for Hennne--yes he's a good backup but not a starter.

We just got rid of an average TE, his name was Fasano. Why anybody believes that drafting another "average" TE would work out different is beyond me. We passed on Gronkowski TWICE. What Dolphin Fan wouldn't want Gronkowski here?? That's the difference between Eifert and Ertz compared to the other TEs in this draft. Draft potential Great or Draft Average.

I don't think the phins should trade for Albert.......They may not be saying that J. Martin is the starting L. Tackle but they're not saying he isn't either, I said it before , I think this kid will be much improved this year, as far as trading for Albert we could have kept our own injury pronged tackle (J. Long). I think they should stay at # 12 and pick the BAP/BPA, and grab OL in later rounds.......just my opinion...oh yeah Dashi,YG,Bobby12, keep the post coming you guys seem to know what your talking about..

And just when the Fins FO seems to have their act together,on players, that is,they roll-out that awful logo.I've been busily buying-up stock with the previous logo and have the mounting receipts to prove it.

Bobby,

You can't say that. Although Ertz is my favorite TE in this draft--NO ONE has a crystal ball. You never know with injuries, different offenses, bad coaches, etc. This kid Escobar could turn out to be the best TE out of all of them.

Remember when Ronnie Brown, Cadillac, & Cedric Benson got drafted??? Everyone thought they'd all be great but the best RB in that draft was Frank Gore. No guarantees that the top three LT in this draft will be better than some other dude. Just look at Jake Long--you can't predict health & longevity.

According to the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals were "not impressed" with free agent RT Eric Winston's tape.
It appears most of the league isn't, as Winston has made just two visits since the start of free agency, and couldn't land deals with tackle-needy Miami and San Diego. Winston held his own for the Chiefs last season, but has been released each of the past two offseasons. He may have to wait until after the draft to find a new home.

"And just when the Fins FO seems to have their act together,on players, that is,they roll-out that awful logo.I've been busily buying-up stock with the previous logo and have the mounting receipts to prove it."

I hate the new logo but I'd rather have a good team.

LOGO,

I appear to be in the minority but I like the logo and like the helmet as well. I will hold my official opinion until I see the entire uniform as one with the helmet and logo. As far as the old logo goes the dolphin with a helmet definitely looked like a cartoon. There was no way to man that thing up lol.

WNPs,

GREAT post @3:28pm. An all-timer for you actually.

Listen, I'm really high on Eiffert but that doesn't mean we should fit him for a Hall of Fame jacket right now. I doesn't mean that he'll clearly be the top TE in the draft. He's the guy I like the best and the guy I'd bet on but you're right, nobody knows how all of this will pan out. With none of these guys really.

And Brandon Graham better get his shyte together. There's a new sheriff in town and he doesn't exactly fit what he looks for in defence. Philly is in the process of re-making their defence and Kelly likes bigger guys. They're switching to a 3-4 and the talk is that Kelly will move to LBer.

New Dolphin logo looks fat and lazy. Who knew they would put Karlos Dansby as a Dolphin on the helmet?

Unless I missed it, it was Arnsburger who made Parcel's famous & NOBODY ELSE! I LOVE JOE PHILBIN! Joe is FROM A PROVEN "WINNER" Franchise SINCE At LEAST THE 50's: GREEN BAY! I'm just saying...

As far as coaches or GM's evaluating players, it seems to me like it's a bad idea to base your choices on a week at the senior bowl or even worse just one day with player.

I would hope you would be looking at their whole body of work , their past productivity, and of of course we all know, their character.

I personally think that through Parcells, Ireland, Sparano, and Henning got tripped up looking for a specific type of player and not so much their ability or productivity.

Rather it ends up working or not you have to commend Ireland for tweaking his methods. Most of of the moves this offseason wouldn't have been made by his mentor but Ireland has done his homework and believe he's onto whats working right now on the NFL.

I wasn't all that thrilled about the logo when they first started talking about the change, but since the leak last week I have seen some mock ups of the entire uniform and I have to say it is growing on me, change is sometimes a pain in the neck to adjust to but sometimes it's good, maybe with the new logo and uniforms it will breath new life into the phins and the fans and a winning tradition will come back to south Florida.......as far as football that is

Mando, have you lost your mind? Seriously dude, using Sparono and Henning as examples of people who can't evaluate personnel? That is your example of a head coach? Sparono? That guy is a dumb as a brick. The worst things that ever happened to the Phins was Sparono being hired as head coach of the Phins and then fired as the OC of the Jets. ( I still think the Jets hired Spo because they owed him one)

The only reason that head coaches don't make great personnel men is because they have too much other stuff to do. To be a good coach you have to be able to get the most out of person that is playing for you. If that isn't handling and evaluating personel then what is?

Bad articles today.

I also like the logo. Of course there are always people who can't move on from the past. The minute the Dolphins start winning the Logo will be a non factor. For some reason it seems there is more problems with the logo with out of state fans then people in Miami. Oh well, to each their own

watching craig m trying to lecture on ireland is f-in comical! the same way he lectured the blog about long & dansby.

no one should be lecturing other bloggers about right n wrong. especially when youre track record of accuracy is abysmal.

I didn't like the new or the previous one. I would be ok with the new logo if I didn't see the "Ellerbe" version. That one I like ...

http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2013/03/new_miami_dolphins_logo_leaked.php

I don't hate the logo but I think it's been over advertised. The way its been hyped I expected a wholesale change.

I'm hoping it gives us some karma though. As I've said before living close to Tampa I can say it certainly worked for the Bucs and Rays when they overhauled their uni's.

They also did it simular to us when they thought they were turning the corner talent wise. Keep your fingers crossed!!

WNP, you are right, injuries, bad luck etc can happen, BUT teams pick players in the draft according to measurables and how they played in college. Let's see Eifert, Ertz and maybe Escobar Wil more then likely be much better then the TEs picked in the 7th round.

Hey chump,

If you've got something to say, why don't you come out from behind some made-up name and be a man. You probably still hide behind your mother's skirt for the longest time too and likely still do.

'zip it chump'? Who the f8ck are you? I had to listen to the shyte about Ireland for the longest time. It's clear those who would rip him apart on a daily and sometimes hourly basis had no clue what they were talking about. Obviously you're one of those, as I've struck a nerve. Too bad chump/chimp! Deal with it...

Craig M,

most of these guys ( the Ireland basher's ) really had no clue on anything, if they would have been paying attention they would have known that Ireland took over a very messy situation, he was left with a bad coach and a bad cap situation, the fact that Ross kept him should have told everyone that he (Ross) didn't think he was too blame and all the fault fell on Parcells.

I like you was one of the very few that supported Ireland (still do) and now we are all seeying the results, heck of a free agency so far along with being very fiscally rsponsible with the cap and we still have the draft to look forward to.

We have the QB situation taken care of and the team has gotten younger and better...

FZB,

Very good points.....and yes, I'm aware you've been one of his defenders/supporters throughout.

No I Cant Figger Out How This Inglish Fing Wurks.

I Will Now Bable Incohearentlee For Mulltipple Parragrafs.

WHAT IS THIS THAT MOST COACHES ARE TERRIBLE TALENT EVALUATORS? WTF!! IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN BEFORE YOU BECOME A HEAD COACH YOU WERE A POSITION COACH AT SOME POINT WHERE YOU HAD TO EVALUATE THE BEST PLAYER FOR THAT POSTION. IF THAT POSITION WASN'T PERFORMING WELL YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN PROMOTED UP. SOME COACHES ARE JUST THAT "GOOD POSITION " COACHES ONLY! THE REASON A LOT ARE TERRIBLE HEAD COACHES IS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT HANDLE THE ADDED RESPONSIBILITY THAT COMES WITH THE JOB. PHILBIN SHOWED ME THAT HE CAN WIN WITH A ROOKIE QB WITH NO WEAPONS TO SCORE POINTS. LET'S NOT KID OURSELVES THE DOLPHINS SHOULD HAVE WON AT LEAST 10 GAMES AND NOW THEY ARE UP GRADING WITH YOUNG VETERANS AND MAINTAINING GOOD YOUNG TALENT. THIS EXPLAINS WHY NFL PUNDITS FEEL THE FINS ARE ON THE UP SWING AND DESPITE "FAT ASS", BROKE ASS SAPP,PLAYERS DO WANT TO PLAY FOR MIAMI. PHILBIN KNOWS HOW TO COACH AND WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THIS TEAM WINS AFC!! PERIOD. JUST GET HIM THE TALENT!

CM,

To your Point on Ireland.

What has Jerry Jones Done Since Ireland left as His Assistant GM?

I read a Article Nobody from the Cowboys 2009 Draft is on the team. And The Other Drafts don't Look Promising.

Since Ireland left J.Jones, JJ hasn't found 1 Acorn!! Either!!

Who Do You Think Found Miles Austin? Or Tony Romo?

Why Hasn't Jerry Kept Finding Acorns?

Us Ireland Supporters Know The Truth. The Others Are Just Starting To See The Light.

------
Robert, I think Philbin is man enough, and inn charge "enough" to say ENOUGH if Tanny turns into Henne. I think Tanny would be traded or released without Philbin being fired. QB's are often a crapshoot. 2 years from now, there should 4-5 QB's worthy of a 1st or 2nd round selection.
Dashi, respectfully, I disagree with your assessment of Clay and Keller as "fullbacks."
They could possibly be called TE/"H-Backs", similar to the Titans great, Frank Wychek. NO WAY could I see handing the ball to Clay or even worse Keller for 1 yard on 3rd down. Besides, neither can block,. a MUST for a fullback. Problem is, Lane is not as good a blocker as other fullbacks, such as the guy in Atlanta.

For whatever reason, Philbin really lost confidence in Lane around the middle of the season, or so it seemed to me.
Would you, or someone hazard a guess as to why? I didn't see as many games last year as I would have liked to, only 12.

Parcells sent Sporano and Henning out to evaluate Flacco, Ryan, and Henne, and they end up drafting Pat White! Man this org. has done some dumb things since Shula left.

I believe they need to go after a FB in the draft. Lonnie Pryor would be a sure upgrade on short yardage attempts.

Hey Buddy @4:50.

I Let All The Sh't You Do Slide!! But Trying To Impersonate Dashi is Where I Draw The F'ing Line!! Respect You Little Rainbow B'tch!!

Don't Let Me Virtually Smack The F'ck Out Of You!! Cause In Real Life I Will End You. And We Know Your Old Ass Doesn't Want None!!

Be Easy Kemosabe!!

And Get Off My D I C K!!

Now Know Your Role!! And Stay In Your Lane!!

Lane didn't convert many short yardage attempts and fumbled a few times. For a guy who hasn't built any cache in the league, that's the death knell

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doNyjdbdLOM
Get rid of Lane. FB available in the 5th prolly maybe earlier.

Writer,

I Don't Know That Much about Keller. But Clay Played FB in College! Check Clay's Stats. http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/charles-clay-1.html

Agreed. I Should've Said More Of an H-Back instead FB.

What I'm Saying Is With The Way This Offense Is Ran. FB and TE's Are Interchangeable.
TE's Line Up In The Backfield in This Offense. How Many Times Last Year Did You See Clay and Fasano Line Up as FB? A lot!!

Why was Sherman Not Playing Clay So much to start the year? Because our TE's line up Everywhere!! Same thing with Egnew.

Thanks For Being The Only One To Respond Though Writer.

Agreed.

L.Pryor is A Beast as a FB!!

I only knew him as The FSU FB.

The Guy Can Block and Runs With Power. He is more of a RB To Me Though. A Short Yardage Back.

He Reminds Me Of G.Jones. Maybe he does make the Switch to Pro FB!!

G.Jones played the same role in FSU in Front of T.Minor.

I've been praising coach philbin expertise all along, just that you have so many morons and biased ignorant fans in this blog. Let's set the record straight Ireland lovers, Philbin is calling the shots hd's the new sheriff in town. Ireland is his puppet and if Jeffrey wanna keep his job, he better do what he is told !! Know his role and shut his mouth this Joe Philbin team now !!

Yeah, OK.

The Ireland Guys Are The Ones claiming This is a Partnership from the Beginning.

Yet, It Is What U say @ 6:00. OK, Sure Buddy.

mace,

So if you say is true @6pm (which it isn't), why did Jeff Fisher walk away from the job? Asnwer: because Ross wouldn't give Fisher final say in personnel matters.

The answer is, that Ireland realizes Philbin knows what he's doing. He's a smart guy who spends a lot of time studying things and knows what he wants. Is there ANYTHING about that that resembles Sparano? Not a thing.

So far it lookes to be a perfect marriage between Jeff and Joe. The draft is the next step!!

As for Parcells and his regime, the guy came for a pay day!! Nothing more!!!

I defended Sparano like crazy because the team played hard for him. First mistake was hiring Henning!!! QB killer.

I couldn't be happier with this new regime!! I wish they would do hard knocks again!!!

Would Fins have any interest in Brian Urlacher?

Craig,

When Parcells hired Sparano noboby knew why. Archaic philosophy and Parcells called all the shots.

GOOD BYE!!

"Sounds a lot better than what that blow hard Warren Sapp was predicting yesterday that Philbin and the Dolphins would have a sophmore slump and would not be able to beat the Patriots. I hope Philbin proves them all wrong."

So the Dolphins are going to "slump" from a 7-9 season? So 5-11?

People need to stop dismissing Fasano. Unless they can find a tight end savvy enough to learn blocking schemes, especially pass blocking, then you can count on Martin, and whoever's at right tackle, to get steamrolled on a regular basis by good pass rushers. Fasano was a gem at covering for the shortcomings of our tackles last year.

Been having throwing session w my wideouts for weeks now

Like I said Dolphins fans, until this team start making the llayoffs consistently or have a 5 year run like the Ravens, this franchise has to earn respect !! 1 playoff appearance in 12 years isn't cutting it fellas and that's a true story !!

I am a Dolphin fan and feel blessed that the coaching search last year produced Joe Philbin. I think there are few men like him left in the world. When I think what we could have ended up with, I shudder. I am excited about the team but disappointed in the new logo. Before you get a shirt with the new logo on it, you must get rid of all of your old logo shirts. If you hang a new logo shirt in the same closet as the old logo shirt, the old shirt will eat the new female shirt without mercy. Burp!
