Dolphins add another DB with final pick

I wanted cornerbacks. I got three in this draft with the latest being Don Jones out of Arkansas State University.

Jones, 5-11 and 191 pounds, has two interceptions in his career.

At the Arkansas State pro day, he ran a 4.42 and 4.40 40-yard dash, according to NFLDraftScout.com. He also recorded a remarkable 42-inch vertical jump, which has skyrocketed his draft stock. For his senior season, he recorded an unofficial 72 tackles with one interception and two passes defensed.

Jones missed the 2010 season becasue he transfered to a JUCO due to academic reasons. He had been a running back in 2009.

Jones, who played strong safety, is expected to get the opportunity to play cornerback.

I will say I didnt like the trade as far as just swapping picks. We should have been given the fourth and then swapped the 5th rounders.

I think Wallace, Keller and Miller are the playmakers with Hartline, Thomas and Gibson as the steady guys.

My concern is depth behind Miller and Thomas. Gray sounds good and Gillislee might be..... If Miller gets hurt, and he was in college, we have a problem.

Of course it is hard to have a playmaker and a backup at all positions.

dusty,

Sunday morning. Still waiting on that Albert deal. YOu remember the one you told everyone was DONE 10 days ago?

Waiting....waiting....waiting...

I think we had a very good draft. A lot of positions were addressed. I would have like to have seen a young WR but I get the logic not done it.

Awesome having the luxury of being able to add a kicker. I expect he'll beat Carpenter out for the job and we'll save some money on the cap. I also expect we'll add a vet to play on the OL. Don't quite know who that will be but I'm sure we'll be fine.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT HARTLINE IS NOT A PLAYMAKER AND MILLER IS TRULY UNKNOWN.

WALLACE PROVED IT AND KELLER WAS HURT SO HOPEFULLY HE CAN GET BACK TO HIS OLD SELF.

BUT IF MOST OF YOU ARE OK WITH BEING AVERAGE I GUESS THE FANS THAT WANT US TO BE THE BEST TEAM SHOULDN't COMPLAIN.

Good draft could b great who knows we will find out soon enough. Still hav a need at OT but u hav to let the draft fall where it falls. Like the 1 st pic Jordan has the skill set to get to the qb and that is was a weak link last yr. Got some dbs, a te and good depth all around. My hope is all these new pieces can gel in time for the season opener against cle because we r going to need that 1.

IF WE MADE THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIOSHIP AND LOST MOST OF YOU WOULD BE HAPPY FOR THAT.

RIGHT?

SOME WOULD BE HAPPY JUST TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

RIGHT?

"We(the Coaches) are kind of the supplement. Jeff approaches Us with his Player and we tell him if he fits our system or concept". Joe Philbin, yesterday. Kind of revealing isn't it?

Sinces the start of the Parcells/Ireland era, the Dolphins have had 50 draft picks. With regard to offensive playmakers (outside of QB):

The highest pick they used on a RB was pick # 62 for Thomas (they also traded two picks to move up to the 62nd pick to select Thomas).

The highest pick they have ever used on a TE was pick # 78 for Egnew.

Finally, the highest pick used on a WR was pick # 87 for Gates, who is no longer on the team.

The Dolphins drafted 3 RBs, 3 TEs, and 5 WRs. Of these, only one was a regular starter in 2012 (Hartline).

This is lack of investment in skilled playmakers is one reason why the Dolphins finished 27th in offense last year.

The other (and primary) reason was that Tannehill did not play all that well especially when compared to the other rookies (Luck, RG3, and Wilson. Even Cousins performed better although he only started a single game).

Some point to the signing of Wallace as a remedy to these offensive problems. While Wallace is probably a good signing, any team with even an average defense can game plan against a single speed WR.

Hartline struggled to get open in many games.

Gibson was not resigned by the Rams - a team that has added four WRs in the past two drafts. The Rams also invested in a solid TE - Cook.

The Dolphins signed Keller, who is coming off a year of significant injuries. The Dolphins have such high confidence in Keller's return to elite form that they only signed him for a single season.

Egnew? Please.

Probably, for the 2013 season, the hope of Ireland and Philbin is 1) Tannehill improves to a Kaepernik-like level and the offense will take care of itself or 2) The defense will keep the games close, running the ball will slow down the game, and the rookie Kicker will be accurate and active enough to win the close games.

The Dolphins may not be as improved as some seem to think. I wish the Dolphins could have drafted better over the years, but they didn't. That's why they have been such a bad team for so long.

Miller is a playmaker. He made some good plays last year. DURABILITY?

If you get in the playoffs AND get hot, you can win it all. Remember the Giants and Ravens? I don't think either of those teams were the best overall teams. They were playing great at the right time.

nod oubt sigh, season depends on thills development. need a big jump

Sigh,

We'll be fine at TE. Keller's an upgrade over Fasano, Clay is still there, hopefully Egnew will grow and they drafted Simms.

If things don't work out they can draft TE next year. I think Egnew deserves another year to show what he's got. I know that won't make happy all the guys that have already labelled him a 'bust'.

I EVEN READ SOME LOSERS SAY IF YOU ARE GOING TO COMPLAIN GO CHEER FOR ANOTHER TEAM.

NO MAYBE YOU GUYS SHOULD GO CHEER FOR ANOTHER TEAM.

YOU LOSERS ARE HAPPY WITH LOSING.

YOU TO BUSY PARA SURFING.

TANNING AT THE BEACH.

GOING TO LINCOLN BLVD MALL.

CHASING THOSE SEXY WOMEN.

WHERE WAS I GOING AGAIN?

WISHING I WAS BACK IN MIAMI.

OH YEAH.

OUR TEAM STINKS.

WE DIDN't GET BETTER.

WE ONLY BECAME WHAT WE WERE TWO YEARS AGO.

SORRY FOR FANS LIKE ME WHO WANT US TO BE THE BEST.

MAYBE WE SHOULD BECOME MORE LIKE SOME OF YOU WHO ARE JUST HAPPY TO MAKE A FIELD GOAL.

HAPPY TO WIN BY ONE POINT

HAPPY TO GET IN THE PLAYOFFS.

WELL

I WANT TO WIN A SUPERBOWL.

EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

YOU FVCKING LOSERS.

Excited to see Matthews growth. could see Fuller as the #5

I see Lane being cut n them keeping Egnew n moving C Clay back to fullback. CCharles has been improving steadily and is a threat in the passing game from either position.

Sigh, Opinions are like a**holes....
Sometimes a**holes have opinions and when the two come together it = Sigh.

dusty is just like dashe, they avoid you when they are wrong and remind you over and over when they are right the other 2% of the time.

SIGH:

T-HILL CAN't BECOME KAEPERNIK.

HE DOESN't HAVE THE WEAPONS.

NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME KIND OF WEAPONS

Blah, blah, blah! Malcontent! Are you a Jets fan? WHAT A WHINER! Nothing positive!

Craig,

I don't like to comment on drafts (about how good they were) right after, since no one knows who will work out or not. But overall I'm pleased. I DEFINITELY wanted to draft a WR/TE, but I too get it. I always said you can't fill all the holes this year we wanted to. And they did a lot during FA to address those positions. Hindsight shows us they decided that would suffice for this year, and they had to address the defense during the Draft.

That's fine, it's a balanced approach. I stressed we needed DB help, so glad that was addressed. Pass rusher also was highly important, so love the Jordan pick.

Mando accurately stated this morning, the focus switches now from Ireland to Philbin/Tannehill. No matter what anyone else does, if Tannehill doesn't step up this year, we won't improve greatly. He needs to take a big step. Philbin needs to Ccach him up.

I'm also interested to see if a "leader" emerges this year (or will players be too afraid of what happened to last year's leadership committee). Doubt anyone walks into Philbin's office this year wanting to discuss a move he made or position he took.

i think 2014 will be the fins year, i think this season will be a ton of ups and downs. prob finish around 8-8

Seems like what Ireland's strategy is to be able to platoon the Players. We have 5 starter DEs at this time, about 6-7 CBs, 4-5 TEs, at least in these areas.

EVERY BODY KNOWS:

YOU ARE CORRECT.

BUT WE DON't HAVE THE WEAPONS THAT BOTH OF THOSE TEAMS HAVE.

WE HAVE ONE TD FLATLINE.

BUT AGAIN LIKE YOU SAID.

IF WE MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE PATS ARE WORRING ABOUT IF THEY MADE THE PLAYOFFS?

dusty please keep us informed about the Albert signing.

I am curious, do great players ever stay available this long?

So, we'll save money from the Bess trade. And if Carpenter gets cut we'll save more. Next person up I look at is either Patterson or Marshall. If Taylor can play this year, one or the other of those contracts will be terminated.

jordan cant even lift weights till aug. gonna miss out on a lot. lets hope he doesnt rush back only to get injured again

Everybody Knows,

When one's response is name calling and personal attacks, then you've already lost the arguement even if one doesn't know it yet.

If the Dolphins finish 13-3, win a divisonal playoff game for the first time since the early 1990's, I'll be more than happy to say that my anaylsis/guess on the state of the Miami Dolphins was incorrect.

The fact is those fans who have pointed out that the Dolphins have not been a good team in the 21st Century have been correct so far. We wish it were not true, but it is.

Sammo. I like Gibson too but he is not a natural slot receiver that will replace Bess. Our WR corps were strong and got weaker after that trade. This trade was all about the Cap savings.

What's worse, Fins did nothing else to improve the postion through the draft. Swopes was available. And not sold on the RB position at all. Lattimore or Franklin would have been a great mid-round picks. Lattimore is worth the risk. Instead they took two really questionable guys too early IMO.

Jenkins might never be more than a special teamer, and Will Davis was taken at least 1-2 rounds too early. And with Swopes still on the board, we take a kicker? Kickers can come from anywhere and are not worth a 5th round pick.

This draft will determine Ireland's fate. Anything short of the playoffs this year is unacceptable. I see tons of potential but potential isn't cutting it anymore. It's playoffs or bust for Jeffy boy

Stupid Tyler Bray switched and changed his mind and went with the Chiefs. Fool!!!

Taylor is already a starter. So is Dallas Texas. So is Davis.

We did so well in Utah with Sean Smith and Koa Misi we just had to go back and pump that well some more.

DOLPHANTA:

YOU ARE THE FAN WHO I'm TALKING ABOUT.

YOU ARE OK WITH LOSING.

SIGH IS NOT WHINING BECAUSE HE WANTS MORE FROM THE TEAM HE LOVES.

YOU MIGHT BE A JETS FAN.

YOU SEEM TO BE OK WITH THE FINS BEING LESS THAN THE BEST.

MAYBE YOU AND SOME OTHERS SHOULD DEMAND MORE.

Sigh,

they won a playoff game in 2000 Get your facts straight. I believe it was Seattle they beat.

dc what do we need the save the money for this year, we have enough cap room for this season, bess should of been kept

DC,

I don't know how this draft will play out (none of us do) but Ireland did his job. He addressed many of the needs we had left (pass rush, CB, TE, RB, backup LB) and I love the drafting of the kicker. The time to move on from Carpenter is now. He's been a good 'Phin.

As you said, it's over to Philbin and the coaching staff now.

How many players did we get for Bess? None? Wonderful.

CRAIG M:

I REALLY RESPECT WHAT YOU SAY BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THAT ONE ALONE.

if dallas is a starter we are even worse on oline than i thought. no craig they beat the colts

And the reason for saving the money is simple:

Jordan's going to cost about $20 mil or so (one of the downsides to trading up). We still have to add another OL and I'm sure the team wants to get a long term deal done with Jones.

dusty, don't know about this year, but keeping our CAP situation healthy moving forward. Don't get me wrong, I loved Bess, wanted to keep him. But if Philbin/Sherman wanted Bess, he'd still be here. And until I lose confidence in them, I'm going to accept their decisions and see how they play out.

By the way, anyone else see what Ross said about Sparano doing a lot of "damage" to the organization? He said, "I didn't hire him." Ouch! Absolutely right. I believe we'll be better for the simple fact that we have a unified front office.

bess will be missed no doubt, def be a time this season where we would of needed him. i think 2014 is our year not this season, if we miss playoffs is ireland gone?

Our top 5 linemen now are Martin, Pouncey, Dalls, Incogs and Garner.

yeah dc, wow what a bomb ross dropped there, stay tuned for sparanos angry response

The Cap can ALWAYS be manipulated by cutting or trading players much like the Fins did this year. For Bess to be about the Cap was ridiculous.

It will largely come down to whether the trade up for Jordan pays off. If he is the next Ware, we're all happy campers. I love the value pick with the Boise St CB. Other than that, I see nothing terribly exciting, and I think Ireland reached on our mid-round picks, while whiffing on adding more skill positions on the offensive side of the ball.

We'll see

dusty,

I don't think he'll be gone. On;y way is if the team falls flat on their faces and if that happens maybe Philbin goes with him.

Btw, I'm making plans to go to Cleveland for the first game of the year. Anybody up for a road trip?

not true cadillac, jerry among others ahead of dallas

it seems most places are giving miami a c for the draft. but theres no way u can grade a draft right now, wait and see. saw where dumb espn had dion as the second worst fit of the first rd picks for miami. ill be in cleveland and tampa for my 2 road games this year. hope they dont kill me in cleveland

I was surprised by the D.Jordan pick I see the upside but wonder how long it will take. It seems memories get short and people tend to forget how things began instead of how they ended. Like every Dol-Fan who saw tape on Jordan I was amazed at the similarities both physically and even technique wise to JT but everybody forgets that JT took 3 Yrs. to become a complete player not really becoming a force in the run game till Yr. 4 of his career.

During the 97-2000 Seasons Taylor couldn't keep his weight up usually showing up around 265 only to play at around 255 and even 250 before Oct. rolled around. He was also in that span prone to injury and missed 3 to 4 games a Yr. in that ERA. Always seemed to have problems with breaks in his hands and for-arms and one of the reasons our D always seemed to wilt in Dec. were we seemed to always get pushed around by bigger OL's and in honesty outside of Trace Armstrong the Pass rush would disappear as well.

I'm not saying Jordan can't contribute right away as a pass rush specialist on obvious pass downs but doesn't that make the 3rd overall pick of the draft a part time player and if so like Taylor before him how long will it take before he can keep the weight on while improving his overall game. In honesty back in the 01 Season I had come to see JT as a 1 trick pony and felt the loss of Bromell and Mixon to the Vikes collectively would hurt more than some thought

It was just JT's HEART and overall commitment to the game (can't be measured) that would get him over the hump were from 01 to 06 he cemented his legacy and will Jordan have that commitment and work ethic because before that period Taylor lived at the Davie facility lifting and eating I remember 6 meals a day to build his body.

It was also what caused the rift with D.Gardner whom JT accused of dogging it and not putting in the time were Wannstedt had to make a decision given those 2 grew to hate each other and in honesty Gardner was a physical specimen who had the goods naturally before back trouble ended his career neither here nor there but bares the ???? about the investment!

You guys still don't get it.
Ross needs an empty stadium in October so he can threaten to move the team and the voters in November will need to agree to pay for the stadium renovations which Ross will then depreciate for a huge profit.

Plaaying Indy, Atl and NO in September with 2 rookie starting CBs will go along way towards guaranteeing an empty stadium in October.

But if the secondary should some how hold up and keep us in the game then we weakened the OL and running game to make things even harder for Tanne.

anyone have a list yet of draft free agents we have signed?

Those of us who are being critical of the Dolphins are fans as well.

We are tired of horrible drafting.

We're tired of losing.

We're tired of being one of the worst offenses in the league nearly every year.

We're tired of season other teams (Seahawks, Falcons, Colts, 49ers, etc.) be at the same level as the Dolphins then far exceed the Dolphins - often in as little as a single season.

We're tired of a SIX year rebuild.

I freely admit those who are being positive may be correct. Perhaps the Dolphins are on the right track to being a Championship team for the first time since Nixon was in the White House.

For the first three years of the Parcells/Ireland regime, I actually thought the Dolphins were a team ready to make a jump to elite level. I though Henne was the future. Needless to say, that didn't happen.

I refuse to just accept management's word that all is going so well for the Dolphins.

It's not.

cadillac wrong again. grimes will be starting at one of the corners for us. agree fin, im not big on dion pick. staying at 12 with eeifert would of been very nice plus still had 42nd pick

Thanks for understanding my point Justin.

Sometimes when a team is not doing well for such a long period of time, it is time to be somewhat critical of moves that don't seem to help the team solve it's weaknesses.

dusty,
Think about it, Grimes vs Revis.
Both pro bowl corners.
Both had season ending surgery Achilles + ACL.
Dr Andrewss said Revis was ahead of schedule and Tampa gave up a first rounder for him and then signed him for $16mil season.
No one said anything about Grimes progress after surgery, Atl let him walk and Ireland signed him for wat $2.5mil?
The same Ireland that just gave away Bess.
I'm just not as optimistic as you are.

Posted by: Sigh | April 28, 2013 at 11:08 AM

I tend to disagree with your opinion of the state of our team but I can appreciate your ability to keep an open mind and consideration that you're wrong. At least you hope you're wrong.

Sigh,

Here's the difference IMO. For whatever he USED to be, Parcells had a flawed strategy for today's NFL. And he made a huge, critical mistake in believing Henne was no different from Ryan/Flacco. And for hiring Sparano, who is nothing but a position Coach. Those 3 critical errors doomed us (again).

Philbin is an offensive-minded HC. His system is up to date. He's updating the offense, and Ireland now is drafting players that fit his system (speed, intelligence, etc.).

On defense we're moving towards an aggressive, blitzing, creating turnovers system (instead of a big, bruising, stop-the-run type defense).

WCO, defense creating turnovers, it may or may not work. But I think we all should appreciate the organization is going in a new direction to TRY and improve. It's better than doing the same thing expecting different results.

dusty @ 11:05,

I agree with you and DC about grading the draft today even the experts say you can't know for sure about any particular draft till 5 Yrs. after the fact. Heck I remember in 90 when we took Webb and Sims were we took some after thought DE in the 9th Round named Jeff Cross so no pick whether 1st or 7th can measured today, seems our 7th rounder this Yr. has it physically so you never know.

Craig M,

The Dolphins defeated the Colts on December 30, 2000 in a Wild Card Playoff game.

The next week, the Dolphins lost in the Divisional playoff game 27-0.

Since 1995, the only other Division Playoff Games played by the Dolphins resulted in losses of 62-7 to Jacksonville and 38-3 to Denver - both in the late 1990's.

I should have checked my facts before posting.

Apologies.

i love grimes, very good corner

I just don't see this comparison of DJ to JT.
Physique-wise...maybe.
But from a football and athletic standpoint, DJ reminds me more of Jevon Kearse.
