Dolphins may have other veteran LT options

Branden Albert might not be the only left tackle available in a trade.

Because left tackles went at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday, one assumes that the left tackles already on Kansas City, Jacksonville and Philadelphia have been at least put on notice that someone is knocking on their door as a possible replacement.

We know the Chiefs would like to replace Albert. He's been on the trade block for a month now.

Well, are you aware the Jaguars and Eagles, which also picked left tackles Thursday, already had left tackles in place?

As ESPN's John Clayton notes, Jaguars left tackle Eugene Monroe is in the last year of his contract. Even though he might play the season at left tackle, it would seem unlikely the Jaguars would pay him big money after taking Luke Joeckel with the second overall pick.

Sooo ... Monroe might be available in trade.

In Philadelphia, where new coach Chip Kelly drafted Lane Johnson with the fourth overall selection, Jason Peters is coming off an injury and expected to return for 2013. Peters, a former Buffalo Bills left tackle, is scheduled to make $12.8 million a year but that club just made his long-term job security an issue.

Sooo ... Peters might be available in trade.

The point is, if general manager Jeff Ireland is as smart as, well, me, he'd be on the phone with both the Jaguars and Eagles today. He'd be trying to find out if either Monroe or Peters is available now. He'd be looking for LT options outside of simply trading for Branden Albert.

Maybe the mining expedition finds nuggets. That's all he needs.

Understand, if the Eagles or the Jaguars say either of their veteran left tackles is available, immediately the Chiefs lose (more) leverage in their attempt to trade Albert because now the market has multiple LTs available.

The Dolphins don't have to necessarily trade for the other available LT, but they have to present themselves as a team with more options today than they had yesterday at this time.

Lets check back in 10 years and see who has had the better career Jordan or Warmack. It wont even be close I suspect.

~~~~~~~~~~
How many game changing guards can you name? Pass rushers are just more important in today's game and worth taking a chance on.
Outdide pass rush is nice - inside pass rush is devastating - nowhere for the qb to step up. Bellichek has pretty much negated Wake the last two years with a single OT in Volmer who is not even their best tackle now.
The irony is that if outside pass rush is important to Ireland as the Jordan pick suggests, he better nail down a good tackle with one of the reamining picks or we are going to die by the same sword.
You start by protecting your qb first. Nothing else matters and nothing else demoralizes a team more than if he is getting killed. Belicheck , Rex Ryan and Mario Williams are going to be drooling.
Even Gruden was laughing at Ireland.
Craig, I have a real job that pays real money. Financial Advisor lol. Sounds tough.
Wundrin,
You're an idiot. Instead of 'wundrin' about other people's careers go finish up that GED.
Wundrin,
YOu could do my job, dikkhead. After talking to you for two minutes I can tell you're not smart enough.
A REAL job with REAL money? Like what? A drug dealer?
You don't have a clue what I do, so go back to your old boring life....thanks for dropping by.
By the end of next season Dion Jordan will be considered the steal of the draft.
Jets Fanbase will be wondering who it was NY drafted to take the place of Revis and what was the other overrated fat guys name sitting on the bench?
LMFAO!!!
Buster, I don't think we traded Bess to the Jets. Pretty sure that was a troll.
PLEASE GO GET HONEYBADGER LET HIM BE YOUR CHANCE PICK LET HIM SHOW YOU WHAT HES OUT TO SHOW, THIS GUY WILL SCARE WRS DOWN THE FIELD PLEASE GET HIM AND A NEW KICKER FROM FSU SORRY DAN IF YOU MADE YOUR 3 SHORT PRESSURE KICKS WE WOULD OF BEEN IN PLAYOFFS AGE WITH HIM IS A FACTOR ALSO 2 GREAT KICKERS FROM FLORIDA AND FSU
'COULDN'T do my job.
..Hireland..Ireland is difficult to judge. He has only been on his own since September 2010. So any of the picks before that he cannot be credited for. If you are going to put the blame of the shape of the roster on Parcells. He either must be judged from his whole time here, or from September of 2010. It cannot be both ways where Ireland gets credit for the good players before that time, and all the garbage dumped on Parcells.
So you are right..Since September of 2010. Ireland has done a good job of turning around the roster. The acis test is this year. All Of these moves need to pay off. We have to win..That is how GM's are judged. Who cares how much cap space, or picks we have if the team continues to stink.
Ha Ha Ha stupid Phins.
Jarvis jones went at 16.
Bjoern Warner went at 24.
Why Phins pay 12 + 42 for Jordan?
Because they stupid that's why.
Ha Ha Ha stupid.
YG (from earlier),
So are you back to being a dikk again? Geez that didn't take long.
I was simply talk out loud about Monroe. Seems to me you do that on her ALL THE TIME. I didn't say it was a well-thought out plan and I'll be honest I don't know enough about Monroe to know if it's a good move or not. Not sure why you have to describe it as 'nonsense'. Is it because you didn't think about it first?
Ross wants to move team to LA w/ Goodell's acquiescence.
Lousy draft pick = even less fannies in seats = bye bye Miami hello LA.
Jordan's failure will = Ross's success.
John Jerry, Koa Misi, D Thomas, M Egnew = more Irescum busts
While I don't agree with this move, we have no choice other to give Ireland the benefit of the doubt to see how this year pans out. He made some gutsy moves. Some I applaud, some I question. NEver been a fan of his draft strategy but let's see if the Dolphins make a big step forward this year. Anything short of the playoffs and Ireland needs to head for the exit sign.
Hopefully we can ALL agree on that
Some of you people just can't be satisfy enough.Ireland is too dull Ireland is not taking chances,what about now. In the words of Bill Parcell" You nothing but a bunch of cummunist"
Very disappointed hope he pans out but we could have had two starters for one third down specialist that's injured
I hardly believe Jeff Ireland needs you pointing these things out to him. It's us, the armchair qb's reading this at our "normal jobs" that needs to read these things. And thank you for the info.
I wish Ross would move his garbage team and stop embarrassing S Fla.
CraigM,
IMO, I merely disagree with trading Martin. I wasnt rude or anything. Disagreeing with you constitutes as "being a dikk" as usual.
Dude you need to get a grip on yourself.
Ireland has three seventh round picks, also has wr bess on trade block..package bess with a set of seventh rounders to climb back up for a 2nd to 4th round pick....qaulity is better than qaunity...
I agree. When Gruden said that about "getting a Ray Rice" to chip him, I was like, well, there is only one Ray Rice. And if you chip Jordan, how do you block Wake? You can really only chip one of them. If forcing teams to chip Jordan gives Wake 6 more sacks, that's a win.
CraigM,
Just like your off the top of your head ideas to trade Martin, you just seem to verbalize the first thing that comes into your mind without first thinking it thru. I now see that's what gets you into so many fights and nsty disagreements here.
Craig no one's out to get you. But it seems that's the mentality you have. If one disagrees with you, they're out to get you. You should learn to relax and just enjoy life a little.
Jordon is J. taylor....6'6" 245 4.61....Jordon 6'6" 248 4.54
Both came from a 3-4 defense, but also played as a DE at times.....both had small injuries.
Folks, relax on most of the Troll negative comments. You know it's the same loser jet fans still trying to get over the record holding "Butt Fumble" play, ESPN most embarassing all time play!. Go vote for it again today. I love to rub the wets fanbase face in it.
So you are right..Since September of 2010. Ireland has done a good job of turning around the roster. The acis test is this year. All Of these moves need to pay off. We have to win..That is how GM's are judged. Who cares how much cap space, or picks we have if the team continues to stink.
Daryl,
Not sure how a fan can look at the situation any other way. If we don't win this year then Ireland has been a failure.
BTW--Ireland is not exempt from the 2010 draft. I never heard Ireland more giddy about a draft pick than he was about Odrick.
Posted by: DarrylDunphy | April 26, 2013 at 01:28 PM
Regardless of results I can say that Ireland has done what he's done absent mortgaging the future. Give him credit for that at least. In the case that he is replaced at least the new GM is left with youth and all the picks he's supposed to have.
When you see Ireland rolling picks into 2014 it's a sign that he feels a bit of job security.
Just realized that I haven't seen anyone trading picks in 2014 yet.
Craig,
You spend 45 minutes of every hour on the fins blog. A 12 year old could be trained to do your job. There is probably 10 software packages out their that do your job well better than you do.
Your entire family couldn't do my job, it smarts, time and concentration.
Salguero is the poster boy for bad Miami Herald reporters. Eugene Monroe, right, a total bust and Peters is 31 and beat up and come off another injury filled season. Clearly this is an article about the need for a warm body, help, please help. Ireland better take Albert, a 28 year old quality LT than will protect the QB and keep him from getting nailed. People don't realize that Albert is a quality, young player and a huge upgrade over Long. The Chiefs aren't desperate as some in this thread may think, they can keep Albert. and get a 2nd round compensatory pick after the 2014 season, which is better than what the Dolphins have apparently offered. Do any of you people know how the NFL works? Go fins.
I don't post much on this site but have come to notice that if anyone disagrees with Craig M he goes off on a childish tirade filled with expletives and name calling. Craig M, please grow up. A true Dolphins fan does not act like this.
...So lets say we don't make a trade. We have 3 picks tonight. What do we do? If anything do not expect what the consensus is. When has Ireland ever failed to surprise?
IMO..We aren't taking an offensive lineman. I don't even think we will take corner. If we didn't take one round 1 last night. I don't think we see one round 2. Plenty of Corners that IMO can fit into a zone scheme. So although corner is a position of need. So was left tackle..So much for that horizontal approach? That was the best smokescreen of the entire draft. I bought it hook line and sinker.
So what do we do tonight?
"Martin isn't that bad at LT; he protected Luck's blind side in College"
Against college players. Not NFL beasts.
----------------------------------------
So you're saying we should have never have drafted the dude? He was good enough to have Luck drafted No. 1 overall last year protecting that blind side.
Look he was a rookie last year and looks like he has bulked up in the off-season. He played LT all through College until he got to Miami (we had Jake Long at LT). Why over-pay for a LT when you already have one on the roster? Makes sense to either get a veteran RT or draft a RT. Martin is a smart guy, he graduated from Stanford for goodness sakes. Put Martin back at his natural position and draft/pick-up a RT. A RT in Free agency will be cheaper than what Albert wants, plus we don't have to give up a draft pick.
WIN, LOSE, OR TIE... DOLPHINS TILL I DIE!!!
Ireland's bold move has 'hero or zero' written all over it. Also puts enormous pressure on him to not miss on 2nd & 3rd round picks.
I would have liked to have stayed at 12 as still were players there (Hayden, Floyd, Star) and would have had high 2nd rounder, but Jordan was top DE in draft so hopefully pans out in a year or two.
If he can come in contribute this year and allow Odrick to move inside could be good move
All you doubters need do to understand Dion Jordan as 1st pick is go look back at 2013's schedule. Particulary the qb's we'll be playing against.
If we cant get consistent qb pressure, we can easily be 4-12. That's counting sweeping only the Bills and Jets. Beat Cleveland and we're 5-11.
Martin isnt much of a RT and is a turnstyle at LT. Tanny got shut out when Martin tried to play LT.
"Jordon is J. taylor....6'6" 245 4.61....Jordon 6'6" 248 4.54
Fishypete,
Okay. I'm sold. No need to see Jordan take a snap in the NFL let alone play 15 seasons.
BTW--Ireland is a genius & is the best GM in the NFL. Ross needs to keep Ireland in Miami & pay him whatever he wants b/c he's so great in every way. Forget wins & losses. No one cares!!!
YG,
Here were your comments to me. As far as I'm concerned that's about as rude as it gets.
I'm not here to sensor my comments for you or anyone else. It's a blog, where express opinions, some of them not very well thought out. I don't apologize for that.
If you're this Wundrin idiot, you can go fukk yourself too!!
I trust we're done talking for the day.
CraigM,
My question to you is, if you haven't a clue if Monroe's any good, why the Martin trade talk?
IMO, this Martin trade talk rubbish you've now rambled is total none sense.
Maybe he'll take a FG kicker with our 2nd pick.
YG,
The problem against the Pats wasnt defense it was SCORING! We got shut out!
Look at the progress. Sure Ireland made mistakes but he never compounded them by riding the mistakes out or repeated the same mistake.
My point is the progress and improvement can easily be seen based on our flexibility. Don't pay someone to learn on the job and then fire him so that someone else can benefit from his on the job training. Loosen up a little bit and see that Ireland actually learns from mistakes.
"If he can come in contribute this year and allow Odrick to move inside could be good move"
JetHater,
Odrick just lost over 20 pounds so he's not moving inside okay??? You have NO IDEA what you're talking about.
Jeff Ireland, the worst GM ever?
Wundrin,
No clue who you are, nor will I ever care to know. Your just some guy who hides behind a name on a blog, who probably uses different names. Right off the bat that makes you a WUSS!
Nobody has ever seen you post here before and all of a sudden you seem to know all about me. Let me say again, you'll never know a thing about me. So keep guessing, keep trying to pretend you're better than me, that you're the man that has all the answers and all the smarts.
You've discredited yourself right from the start, so any other stuff you come up with means NOTHING.
Now go jump off a bridge...
Just FYI- Quotes on Twitter from Darlington.
"Jeff Darlington ‏@JeffDarlington 1m
On Mar 12, after Dolphins landed Mike Wallace, I tweeted about team's "intriguing" draft plans. Many have asked for weeks about that tweet.
I feel comfortable now sharing: That plan, at that time, involved the pursuit of Tavon Austin. It was a hope all the way until yesterday."
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with the pick yesterday but just thought I'd post that.
I just had a strong feeling they were after Austin even though Ireland has the pro size requirements.
Hireland,
You sound like Jerry Jones with Jason Garrett as his HC. Guess what??? Ireland belongs in Dallas with the rest of the losers.
2013, we have 11 games against qb's whom if you can consistently get pressure against, will carve our pass defense like Thanks Giving Day turkey. Go look at the schedule for yourselves.
Hell, I wouldnt even be against Ireland adding Damntre Moore 2nd rd, if he's still available with our pick. More than ever, we need to get "CONSISTENT PRESSURE" on qb's this year.
On the 2013 schedule, take away the 2 Jet/Bills game, and take away the Browns game. Then take notice of the qb's we will be facing. All will carve you up without "CONSISTENT" qb pressure.
..hireland. I agree. Ireland has gained my respect. Not that he needed my validation. I agree on paper that if he left after this year the cupboard is more stocked then it was in 2010. I think that the moves he has made this offseason have been bold. And I am excited about the team for the first time in a few years. I think we have a chance to be pretty good...
I have been harsh on Ireland in the past. I have no problem saying that my opinions of him may have been wrong. But..We still have to prove it on the field. Until then there will be doubters. There will be those who have every right to be cynical.
Martin is not a bad LT so he got put on his butt one time by Aldon Smith and that had to do with Martin protecting the edge from smith before he bull rushed him, but he set our rookie up real good on that play. If I recall John Abraham did Jake Long like that here in Atlanta in the Dome in a preseason game, not to mention Freeney whipped long inside out and ran over him after getting at Tanney the entire day. I am fine with Martin, who I actually thought combo blocked well to the next level and he and that Winston sure can cut off the backside backer when the ball is going away from them. Gaither should be mentioned but I really like Martin on the Leftside regardless of who we bring in, because he looks waaaaaayyyyyyy more comfortable on the weakside. If anybody we should get that damn igcognitus out of there (As Family guys Peter would say:)))
Oh I don't think Ireland belongs in Dallas. The Cowboys fans are going nuts about their pick today. Be very glad Jerry Jones doesn't own the Dolphins.
Texas,
Does that make any sense to you? So if Austin was the plan, why trade up to get Jordan?
The story I read was Stephen Ross asked his people 'if you could have any player who would it be'? and the answer kept comoing back as Dion Jordan.
So Darlington's saying that Austin was the target all along and that they changed it at the last minute? I'm having a really hard time believing that. And I'll say again, from what I know of Jeff Ireland and the school of Bill Parcells that he's from, he doesn't like ANYTHING slip to anyone. I admire him for that. I'm not buying that this was their intentions all along.....sorry.
If you're this Wundrin idiot, you can go fukk yourself too!!
I trust we're done talking for the day.
See what I mean. Armando personally told you that I don't use troll names. Still you cant resist an opportunity to take your childish immature rant shots.
God Bless you, CraigM, just like the devil you'll never change.
Sorry yes it makes sense. They had Jordan rated higher. They were probably not going to make a trade up for Austin and would have just taken him at 12 if available. I could copy the rest of what Darlington said if you like. It is 4 or 5 quotes on twitter.
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with the pick yesterday but just thought I'd post that.
I just had a strong feeling they were after Austin even though Ireland has the pro size requirements.
Texas,
I owe you an apology on that. Based on taking Jordan apparently Ireland's size requirements have gone out the window.
DC (from earlier),
A lot of what you said makes sense. I'm not 100 per cent convinced that they've given up in the idea of Martin at LT. It coould still happen I believe. So you're right, it's not an awful option as many have suggested. I just don't believe it's the BEST option and I think they have to address it.
My bet is, Ireland knowing that LTs would get chosen last night has already had conversations with the Jags and Eagles regarding their existing LTs. Peters is intriguing but I think he's been injured too much and makes too much money.
When there were talks about the phins possibly going after Dumervil in FA I was excited at the possibility of having two monster pass rushers going after the QB.
Now that the phins picked Jordan I don't have to tell you how excited I am about that. You could argue the Giants won 2 SB's by having a tremendous pass rush, and both times vs our nemesis Brady, I mean the patriots (I did mean Brady =).
So it makes huge sense to have this pass rush to stop Brady and the Pats from winning the division by default.
Jeff Darlington ‏@JeffDarlington 11m
I feel comfortable now sharing: That plan, at that time, involved the pursuit of Tavon Austin. It was a hope all the way until yesterday.
When Dolphins realized they couldn't get Austin, rather than hitting brakes, Ireland put his foot on the gas pedal… and got Jordan instead.
Some aren't understanding. MIA rated Jordan higher than Austin. RT @tnps47: Austin was available at 3. Phins couldve had him if they wanted.
YG,
I don't believe there's a SINGLE person on this blog who believes you only post under one name. Not a ONE. Would you like to put it to a vote? You saying you've NEVER used a different sign in name? I don't believe it for a second. So keep living the lie man. You're Armando's number one blogger on here. He's not going to call you oout or his numbers will go WAY down.
So how long before 'Canadien Bacon' and all the other guys show up, YG?
There are some great defenses in the nfc west. Im sure San Fran and Seattle defenders have already marked Tavon Austin on their calenders. May God be with him. He'll need him.
Craig,
I was one of the people asking him to share those plans but didn't get an answer. From that I was guessing that Austin was who he was talking about. "intriguing" to me meant was not normal for Ireland at all.
