Dolphins move on Albert should depend on details

Sometimes the devil is in the details and that's where the Dolphins are with Branden Albert.

As multiple media sources reported Wednesday, and as I reported on this blog on March 22, the Dolphins are considering making a trade for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise player.

[Update: John Clayton of ESPN is reporting the Dolphins have been given permission to speak with Albert and he'll visit the Dolphins and take a physical soon. Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald is reporting the sides are talking contract.]

On its face, the idea makes sense.

The Dolphins lost left tackle Jake Long to St. Louis in free agency. The club has a need and coach Joe Philbin didn't exactly endorse the idea of Jonathan Martin as his starting left tackle when he discussed the issue last month. The Dolphins also had a price point for Long and they have not used the cap space that was intended for Long on anyone else.

So the team can afford to sign Branden Albert and believes Albert to be a left tackle upgrade over Martin.

But ...

The devil is in the details.

The only way this trade makes sense is if the Dolphins do it in conjunction with another trade and only after Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel comes off the board on draft day. That's right, this trade only makes sense if Joeckel isn't available because if he is on draft day, the Dolphins look like fools.

If Joeckel goes No. 1 overall to Kansas City, then the Dolphins can be certain the best LT in the draft is gone and they move on. But if KC picks Eric Fisher and Joekel drops to No. 3 or No. 4, the Dolphins must, must, must try to trade up to get him. That move would be expensive in that it would require a second-round pick and other considerations. But it makes more sense than the Albert trade because that also will require a second-round pick plus a more expensive contract than Joeckel.

And Joeckel, unproven in the NFL as he is, is probably going to be a better player than Albert.

So the Dolphins would be going for a better player (Joeckel) using basically the same draft pick compensation (well, maybe more expensive but only slightly) and pay a lower contract in the transaction.

So if the Dolphins don't wait for draft day to make this Albert trade, they're not really thinking through all the contingencies. And if Joeckel then falls, the Dolphins will look downright foolish.

Then there is this:

Even if Joeckel goes No. 1 overall as expected, the Dolphins can simply trade a No. 2 for Albert, but they would still look kind of silly. You see, why pay a high draft pick and a big contract to Branden Albert when you could have had Jake Long for the big contract and kept the pick?

You mean to say the Dolphins played hardball with Long only to cave on Albert?

I understand Long is seemingly diminished and often injured. Trust me, I made the point here many times. But Albert comes with no guarantees, either. He basically had a very good season in 2012. But it was only good enough for the Chiefs to want to trade him. He's been injured during his career. He's struggled with weight issues. He was a turnstile in 2009, giving up nine sacks.

And, again, the Chiefs are willing to let him go so they can draft a rookie to play the same position.

So it's not like Branden Albert is a slam dunk worth-it move.

This is where the devil has to be in the details.

If the Dolphins pay Albert as much as Long got in St. Louis, they look dumb. If the Dolphins get Albert for much cheaper, they still have a find a way to recover that second-round pick they still gave up for him.

And how do they do that?

Well, here is my perfect scenario that would prevent me from thinking the Dolphins got ripped off on getting Branden Albert. If the Dolphins trade away their lower of two second-round picks for Albert and then trade down from No. 12 overall to a lower pick in the first round while then pickinng up a second-rounder for the move, I'll be straight. I'll be good.

The haul would then be a lower first, Albert (albeit at a big contract) and two second rounders for all those moves.

The trade down would mitigate the sting of giving up a second for Albert because it recovers a second-rounder for the trade down.

By the way, if the Dolphins somehow end up giving Albert more money than Long got from St. Louis, something is significantly amiss because even with his multiple injury issues, Long was still a better player than Albert when healthy.

All this has to play out.

The devil will be in the details.

needs to be part of another draft-day trade down

I do believe Ireland went hard after Long but it wasn't meant to be.

If the Fins get Albert, trade down 4 spots with Dallas and pick up an extra 2, they will look like geniuses.

no doubt, albert is better than long, period. doesnt make us look dumb

well yeah if jerry jones is dumb enough to deal a 2nd to move up 4 little spots

You right we're only giving up the 2nd round pick and swamping 1s.

But it's still a two to one deal to get a lt?

If they get Patterson and Olgatree or anybody at that matter that ten from Standford.

If they get Two pro bowlers we get one.

That's not a win to me.

If they get a Phillip Rivers. Shawn Marrimen and we get Eli cool

But for a lt?

No thanks.

I get your point Mark. I understand. So explain this to me:

Why do you think the Chiefs would prefer to pick Joeckel than trade down a few slots and fill another need, get more picks back, and keep Albert at LT?

The thing that continues to bug me is the Chiefs probably have options other than getting rid of Albert. But they'd prefer to do that.

Hayden is a scary pick after that injury but 4.3 is very intriguing especially after that near death accident

If this trade goes thru, it reaffirms the notion that things are going bad for JMart at LT.

armando thats easy, nobody is willing to deal up. kc begging teams to trade with them for pick. reid comes on radio here and even actually says this.

My Point Exactly.

If Everyone Knows B. Albert Is Better Than Jake?

Why Won't B. Albert Get More Money?

I Could See Trading Down After The Trade To Pick Up A #2. Or A Future #1. Since The Player We Need Can Be Taken A Little Latter. E. Lacy.

So the Phins want Albert who is a slight upgrade over Martin. The guy is rated 25th at his position in the league.Yep....definitely Jake Long material....(at the end of Jake s career in Miami anyway).Geezzzz.Miami s really reaching for this guy.He s an average....at best player.Miami can do much better than this at that spot.Ireland needs to get a talented player there...not an average one.

Armando, you on board the Eifert train?

and just to be able to keep albert they had to franchise him and that made them have to way over pay bowe instead of using tag on him. if they just didnt like albert they would of let him walk. he was easily kc's best oline last year.

One last thought before I stop hogging space here:

The Dolphins traded Brandon Marshall last year. On the face, it looked like a bad trade for Miami. They had a lot of money invested in him, they got lower picks for a player that cost higher picks, and he balled out in Chicago.

But the Dolphins are happy about it because Marshall had half a dozen unreported incidents at his house where police were called. They were happey because Marshall was difficult with coaches. They were happy because he got into an argument with Igor Olshansky on the team plane. Those things, I'm sure the Bears didn't know about.

I am not saying Branden Albert has similar problems. But there is a reason KC is content getting rid of him. What are they? What don't we know?

None of this makes any sense to me either, Armando. Could it be the SS??

slight upgrade over martin, hilarious, u cant really be that dumb

I like Eifert, B33... Not at No. 12, but he's going to be at least a starter.

yes armando ill tell u again, he wont move from lt, he wont report till long term deal. kc stuck with first pick and no options. has nothing to do with talent

Armando - you clearly seem against the Albert trade...good...fine.

Please provide your reality based view on the Fin's OT solution? What is realistic and best for the team?

Martin and Winston
Albert and Martin
Trade 2 picks for Johnson and Martin
Martin and Fluker
McKinnie and Martin
Matin and 2nd round RT pick

Would you agree the trade up for Joekel or Fisher is unlikely to be pulled off and/or too costly (costing us 1st, 2nd and 3rd this year or 1st, 2nd and 2nd in 2014)?

Because if there is one thing we need to push the Fins to elite status, it is the 26th rated tackle in the league,

WOW !!! Having Armando live blogging here this close to LUNCH..unbelievable !!!!

There is a huge problem with trading picks for Albert. The Dolphins are currently 8,792,511 under the cap. Brandon Alberts cap hit is 9,828,000. This will put the Dolphins over the cap rule of 51.
The team really needs to trade contracts to make this deal.
It should be Starks for Albert straight up.

This New Jersey Dolfan on his way to see Sunlife Stadium.

Mando, simply because I look at the board. The best players with the ebst track records are the LTs, TE, OGs, and the DTs.

You aren't going to draft a very good but not all world TE in the top 5, same with the OGs.

DTs, maybe if they ran a 4-3 Def. But in a 3-4, the DEs are just pluggers for the msot part so they go along with TEs and OGs in terms of core positions ...

I mean, there's a reason why jax can take Floyd @ 2. he's worthy in a 4-3.

If there's a 3-4 OLB out there or a WR or a QB even as good as Tannehill - they're not picking a LT.

That's how I see it anyway. All epeculation and heresay but I know my best friend is a Chiefs fan and as in tune with that team as I am with the Dolphins and he rather have Albert than a 2nd pick. But knows that Albert won't play unless he plays LT.

I think Texas dfan mentioned trading down with Dallas at 18 for Eifert. Dallas supposedly wanting Vaccaro badly... no clue if that works but that seems like the best option imo

@ 11:48 - I'm not going to take any criticism seriously from someone who stays in 3 star hotels!!!

Man, we can't afford that RT would be limited or hurt this Season and our OL is in shambles now. What to do? What to do? My God.

If we could get a 2nd or 3rd+4th for that trade down scenario I wouldn't mind dropping a 2nd rder for Albert but there are going to be great players available in rd 2 making it a steep price to pay

Thanks for being the unofficial KC correspondent Dusty! I appreciate the view from behind enemy lines, so to speak.

This trade seems ready to happen. I just wish the Dolphins would hit pause and get the maximum for this. That's all. Make KC sweat and maybe lower the price a bit.

Oscar..when in doubt, punt.....

jeremy trade not going down without new contract

Mando, point noted about Albert possibly being a retard like Marshall. Obviously I don't have the intel to be able to comment on that. I would simplay understand the moves for both teams from a football perspective tho, all I can say.

Armando...don't you usually have the napkin on your lap and the menu in your hand by now ? !

They get 8 million after June 1st or something like that

Mando @ 11:57, agree 100% ...

oh i agree armando, ive said since march this trade if it happens will happen on eve of draft

If Albert Is A Locker Room Problem?

We All Know That Isn't A Philbin Type Player.

But Anybody Would've Turned Into A Problem In KC. They Had A Bunch Of Soft Coaches Up There Recently. They let The Players Run The Team.

With That Said, Few Compare To Marsha. The Guy Was A Head Case. He Made C. Johnson Look Normal.

And The Chiefs Cut Winston But Kept B. Albert. If They Really Wanted A LT. Why Not Keep Winston?

Rosenhaus on Rose's show this morning made it seem like we should wait for day 2 to make that trade allowing Miami to exhaust all their options and driving the price down further when the chiefs inevitably take Fisher or Joeckel.

Hypothetically if Johnson falls to 12 would Albert still be worth that trade?

now talking on radio here how miami is now in neg with albert after getting kc approval on new contract. so deal is done just now up to albert to agree on deal

dashi u realize winston is awful right. was a swinging gate in pass protection last year

b33 deal is done. now he has to agree to new contract and will take psy most likely fri

Deal just about done !!! REALLY?

the crucial assumption made by Mando is that Joeckel will be or is better then Albert, which is difficult to assess so early, this is still a rookie and the NFL game so much faster. Do not believe Tanny should be at risk with Garner + rookie at OT. Get Albert who is a good OT and still at peak of his talents, Long has been deteriorating. Maybe a DE with first pick, and corners for next 2 picks.

Armando...easy for you to delay lunch.....but it'll be tough on the farmers !!!!!

nfl network has mia trying hard to get milner

I Believe The B. Albert Situation Is Blowing Up In A. Reid's Face.

How he Wishes This Draft Was Different. Or That S. Louteli Didn't Have A Heart Problem. Or That KC Will Hang Andy If He Picks Another DT With The First Pick.

Mando from your mouth to Ireland's ears.....That would be an AWESOME first two rounds ...

What do you think KC would want for their number one pick in the draft? The other question what would Miami be willing to give up multiple picks for an elite LT?

Can we just back up for a second....

Forget what you think of Albert as a player. Would we all agree that the Chiefs are trying to trade him? Why?......

Because his VALUE doesn't match what he wants to/is going to be paid. Based on his age, his injury history, his weight, his attitude....whatever. The whole package. He's not worth what some of you guys want to pay him. AGREE or DISAGREE?

So if Albert is THE GUY, how come the Chiefs haven't signed him to a long term deal? Tell me. Because they're just like everybody else....they have questions on this guy. This isn't Joe Thomas or even Ryan Clady. It's Branden Albert. He's not 'elite'. He's not a franchise LT. And see some of the same guys who were against paying franchise money for Jake Long now arguing that ALbert should get it. Huh??....

I don't get the logic guys. I really don't.

Well, this lokos serious, KC giving Albert permission to talk to another Team.

And also argue that there is no CLEAR CUT number one pick in this draft. It's not Joeckel. It's not Fisher. These are good players and I'd like to have them on my team but this isn't Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning. There are a few guys you could argue could go number one. So the Chiefs aren't in a position where they HAVE to take Joeckel or Fisher. It's simply SMART for them to pcik one of those guys and trade Albert. Logical even.

yup means compensation is done, now all about contract

I'm just happy we filled a hole... Not what I would've done but either way it's a step in the right direction improving this team

I doesn't mean ANYTHING like that. It means the Dolphins are doing their due dilligence on him.

Oscar...you may be right....if this trade is really emminent, the Martin @ LT project may be dead in the water...

You left out one key issue with Long. His declining health, I would have kept Long, but his injury history was too much. I know Albert missed games last year, but you get a pass if it hasn't been a problem before. I am not trying to start an argument, I respect your posts. I am just sayin'

craig its clear as day, if u cant see that kc is stuck with first pick and nobody to take other than a lt than we cant help u. they lost 2 second rounders when sf ripped them off for smith. so now they need to get one back

Per my post to get Albert, I was assuming that philbin had passed on Clabo, Winston, etc
