Dolphins pick UF linebacker, Michigan State TE in 4th

The Dolphins picked up a linebacker and tight end with their two fourth round picks today.

The Dolphins spent a lot of money revamping their linebacker corps in free agency but with their first pick of the fourth round (104 overall) the team picked linebacker Jelani Jenkins.

With the (160th pick the team picked TE Dion Sims of Michigan State.

Jenkins is a WLB. He's very similar to Josh Kaddu who the team drafted last season and is hoping to use more as a pass rusher.

Jenkins missed four games due to multiple injuries in 2012. Durability is a big issue with this player.

Jenkins was a fine cover linebacker in college. He had one interception last season.

"I hope to be able to help out as fast as I can," Jenkins said. "However I can do that, I'll do whatever the coaches ask me to."

Sims, 6-4 and 265 pounds, is a classic tight end type. He's burly. He's lumbering.

He does, however, seem to have good hands.

"I'm an all-around tight end and I can do everything," Sims said. "I came a long way. I've been putting a lot of work in. Blocking and catching is my specialty. I'm a versatile tight end."

In 2010, Sims was suspended from the team for his participation in a theft ring. So there's that.

"It's pretty much in the past and it's behind me," Sims said. "I learned a lot from that situation and not be so naive."

Sims said all the teams he spoke to asked him about the incident and he "told them the truth and the whole story."

It's not whining when one points out the fact that the Dolphins have had four straight losing seasons.

It's not whining when one notices that the team has a number of players with medical issues, especially when those players are are key positions.

It's not whining when one sees the 27th ranked offense not being much improved except for a single FA signing.

It's not whining when one thinks the team is mis-built. Question: Has the team been built well in the past 15 years?

It's not whining when one sees other teams doing better when they were in worse shape than even the Dolphins. Note: See Seahawks, Colts, 49ers, and so on.

It's not whining when one notices that the Dolphins have had horrible drafts for well over a decade.

It's not whining to be skeptical.

It's not whining to debate.

It is whining to resort to name calling and other cheap personal attacks.

By the way, one suspects that some of the posts to this board are coming from employees of the Dolphin organization. :)

Im so glad you get this joke. Nobody else does. Just scary that you even get it. ROTFLAO at you! LOL...

If Ross wasnt such a cheapskate and signed Flynn like Philbin wanted we couldve used last years #8 pick on a great WR instead of the 29th rated QB TanneBust.

Packers just took Jonathan Franklin to go with Lacey so they WILL have a running game this year or at least that's the plan. GB is going to be good.

Kris, Oscar, Aloco, bobbyd12, YG, all of the Odins,

We are worse now as a team than we were when the season ended.
Dion Jordan was a great pick. The rest are scrubs.
Have a nice day.

Stepfan Taylor is still on the board...Hard to believe.

I'll leave u fellas with this little nugget again before enjoying a nice sunshine filled 305 day with the kids (don't hate Northeasterners).......

It's 75 degrees and cloudless in the Northeast today.

Not sure what anyone should be 'hating' but you might want to check the calendar.

It's the defenders, who deify every move made since Ireland arrived, who are destroying this team, not the bashers. I am proud to bash a team that has been mediocre & dull for ten years, sans the Pennington year.

Ireland's constant ineptitude must be called out & criticized, not fawned over by the sycophants on this blog.

Sims looks like he'll be a legit redzone and endzone threat. Will help the run game with his blocking too.

Can never underestimate great TE blocking in the run game. Gronk was a huge part of that for the Pats. When he went down, so did their run game.

WHPs,

Yeah I love what the Packers did at RB. I was hoping Ireland would draft Franklin. I'm a litte disappointed he hasn't addressed the position yet and has gone other places.

For example, I would have rather we went and got Frnaklin than Jenkins. I get the need for backups and special teamers. I don't love that pick.

It was stupid to pick another LB instead of a RB, a safety or even a WR. Who knows what's going on on Ireland's weak mind.

For TE we wanted Jared Cook, Eifert or Ertz. We got Mickey Shuler from the Jets.

Anyone seeing a pattern here?

=========================================

Mickey Shuler??

I do see a pattern here. You don't know what the eff you're talking about.

Thanks Greg G. I am so sick of these whinnie ass fair weather dbags that troll around Dolphins sites just trying to stir up trouble. Just a bunch of armchair GM's and coaches. They think that they know more than proffesionals that get paid to make these calls. I remember the years when the pats and alot of other teams sucked year in and year out. Bottom line is every team has its day and the Fins are climbing back up. Look at the cowboys back in the late 80's. 1989 they won 1 game and that was Aikmens first year. We real fans have to stick together.

I don't need to remind you all...we were 27th in the league in scoring for the reason of not having enough talent. That has not been helped at all in this draft. The offense needed some real help and depth too and 4 out 6 picks are on defense. A sophomore QB and RB are going to carry this team? There goes Patton... is it too early to have a beer?

Sigh@1:30.

That Whole Post Was You Whining.

Miami signed the biggest offensive playmaker in Free Agency. But I guess that was more than 15 minutes ago so some of you can't remember that anymore.

Jesus, what a bunch of whiny pantywaists.

Craig,

Jenkins has a LOT of upside so I think that might have been a case of 'I can't believe this kid is still on the board.' Hopefully Ireland will take a RB in the 5th with one of the picks.

I truly believe that Stepfan Taylor is the perfect compliment to Miller. Extremely tough runner & he's a COMPLETE back. Speed is not there but he'll still be a good player.

Oh ya sigh, its whinning. You are disgusting. You shouldnt even be allowed to wear one iota of Fins gear or even be allowed to watch the games on tv. Why do I say this becouse you have no clue. Yes this team has sucked pretty bad for more than a decade but you refuse to even be the least bit upbeat. Your attitude is like a cancer that needs to be cut out.

Dadsmith,

I'm not counting Philbin & this team out.

what the crackerville you are trying to say

Have fun talkin to yourself today YG, remember to lube!

CraigM,

We're looking for a short yardage and goal line rb. LB Jelani Jenkins has starter caliber talent. I see him as great insurance should Wheeler go down:

"Jenkins' injury-plagued season should have caused him to return to school, but he entered the 2013 NFL Draft. The advisory board told Jenkins he would be a third-day pick.

He added a lot of weight before the Combine and did well in the bench press (27 reps). Jenkins is a physical specimen who could be a sleeper prospect who develops into a starter."

So, getting him 4th rd is somewhat of a steal. Especially since this guy has the talent to develop into a starter.

I would love Lattimore to still be there with our next pick. If not, we can probably get a short yardage or goal line rb as an undrafted walk-on. Miller's the starter so it isn't urgent to draft a short yardage/goal line rb to extremely late. But would be nice if a talented rb fell into our laps.

I think everybody forgets that the draft is not to always yield " starting " players, alot of these guys are being drafted because they can pay special teams while they develop. You know "special teams " that can cange the face and score of a game in a heartbeat.

Maybe the Dolphins go 12-4 this year. And maybe they go 6-10.

Wallace was a good signing. So were a few of the others.

The point is that the emphasis was on defense in the draft. A more balanced approach might serve the team best, but what's done is done.

The under-investment in the offense may result in yet another year (decade?) of subpar offensive output.

Lattimore to the Niners. That says it all. Just look at what the Niners, the Packers, the Ravens, the Giants, the Steelers, & the Bengals (yes the Bengals) have done. They have a foundation in place & just keep adding to it

My biggest concern with our free agent pickups and draftees is all the hurt guys.

I like the revamped line backing core alot. That was a huge need that Ireland and staff seem to have nailed down. You need big plays from your linebackers and we got zero from them for years. Now, mercifully Trusnick can be cut. Youth should be the backups not never were's. I expect pressure from all sides now on any given play including up the gut. When we bring seven I want to see that pocket collapse fast.

Egnew never was meant to be an inline TE. He will be split out if he can learn the offense.

IR,

Your Incompetence Of American Football Should Be Admired.

And You Trolls Have Wasted Good Football Talk With Your Whining That Can Wait Til After The Draft.

We Already Know You Clowns Are Goin To Whine And Cry Til The Preseason.

Can You Please Wait Until After The Draft So You Can Repeat The Same Crybaby Statement A Million Times And We Can Go Back Discussing Something That Is Going on Live. The Draft.

You Have All Year To Complain About Ireland. Can We Stick To The Draft For 3 Days. Or To The End Of Today.

Start crying dolfans, Lattimore a Niner. We can all begin crying in:

3....2.....1.................... LOL....

Lattimore is a HECK of a kid. Just awesome. I hope his knee holds up but even if it doesn't he'll be okay.

YG,

I don't know Jenkins well enough. I don't follow the College game as closely as some of you guys. I just think I would have preferred a guy like Franklin. It could well be that Ireland's plan is to add a vet to the two kids we have and maybe that's the right way to go about things. I just thought highly of Franmklin and would have liked to have seen him added in the 4th, as good a guy of good value.

DONT TELL THESE GUYS THIS. THEY THINK THAT YOURE SUPPOSED TO BUILD A 50 MILLION DOLLAR MANSIONOVER TOP QUICKSAND.

YOU'LL RUIN THEIR DAY!

"My biggest concern with our free agent pickups and draftees is all the hurt guys."

Darkoak,

I here you but that's ALWAYS a concern. You never know with injuries. Last season we'd stayed extremely healthy as a team.

John,

I can understand you wish to read a more positive posting of the Dolphins attempt to rebuild the team.

Here's one: I'm positive that Ireland will return as GM in 2014, even if the Dolphins go 8-8 or worse.

Here's another: Perhaps the Dolphins will be greatly improved in 2013. Perhaps.

WHPs,

Lattimore is a big questions mark. I like the guy a lot too but I struggle when everyone makes him out to be such a steal. None of us know. Most people thought his career was over after the second knee injury. He's a great story and I like the kid. I just don't know if he's worth the risk or not. None of us are close enough to the situation to know. Niners can take the chance. Can we? Not sure.

Too bad Dashi. The Niners just took Lattimore. Oh well you can't win them all.

And maybe it wont be subpar. We wont know that it will or it wont. But you cant sit there and say that we did'nt get better on offense like so many of these so called fans are trying to say. I mean MY GOD what does Ireland have to do! He signs a guy who has blazing spee and can catch the ball, unlike Ginn. He goes out and gets a former Dolphins killer TE. We have a jem in Lamar Miller. His only down side is that hes not the greatest blocker. Give mw a break dude.

Any chance EPN and NFL Network can start telling the TRUTH at this point?

And by the 'truth' I mean simply saying we've hit the point in this (or any other) draft where most of these players will make little or no impact in pro football whatsoever. Many won't even make it out of camp--the vast majority of those that do will have forgettable, brief careers regardless of being seen as a 'steal' or a 'hidden gem' in April.

That's right. They're not ALLOWED to say it!

Depends on when they get rid of Ireland..

In what decade do we get a franchise QB?

Posted by: Fire Ireland Now | April 27, 2013 at 01:03 PM

Ellerbe Started Out On Special Teams.

R. Jones And C. Clemons Started Out On Special Teams.

Z. Thomas Started Out On Special Teams.

T. Brady Started On Special Teams. He Was A Holder Until Bledsoe Got Hurt.

What a shitty draft!!!!! Simms may have been the best pick.

Lattimore to the Niners, to bad. I would have loved this kid in Miami but of course people here would have complained about his injury and how he will have a short career blah blah blah.. Just like Brees, just like Gronkowski, just like the complaining about Dion Jordan. It never ends on this blog. Hope this kid the best.

Craig I think we might be good with what we have at RB this season. I see Thigpin's role increasing and we have Gray coming off injury. I expect Ireland to bring in some undrafted guys to check out. It would have to be a big value to take RB now IMO.

Why not pick up Swope with this upcoming pick? Another toy for Tanny and a guy he knows. These 5th+ round picks don't usually pan out anyway. Come on Jeff take a chance.

Craig,

I didn't say I would draft him!!! I just like the kid & I hope he makes it. Too risky for me with that injury. He almost lost his leg!!!

IMO--He went to the best team in the NFL & a team that doesn't need him to contribute this year. Gore is still going strong & they have Kendall Hunter & LaMichael James.

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE FAT OR DOWNRIGHT OBESE?

STOP SITTING INDOORS DAY AFTER DAY LETTING YOUR MINDS AND BODIES TURN TO MUSH!

IT IS REPULSIVE AND NO WOMAN WANTS ANYTHING TO DO WITH A GUY LIKE THAT!

GET OUTSIDE AND IMPROVE YOUR BODIES AND MINDS IMMEDIATELY!

DO YOU THINK REAL MOVERS AND SHAKERS ARE SITTING ON THEIR PASTY, FAT BUTTS OBSESSING ABOUT 22 YEAR OLD KIDS ALL DAY??

They're not here as fans of this team. How do I know? I've NEVER seen one positive post from this guy. But thanks for coming out. Did your won team disown you?

You obsess to talk about things no one gives a sh&t about. Who cares, really?

Discuss something more useful. You're worse than them & ruin it for everyone else.

They feed off dummies like you giving them attention. You play right into their hand. You're either too dumb to realize it or you just can't help yourself from spamming the blog with useless posts like that one.

Just shut up. No one comes here to read your useless insight into trolls.

Isn't it heartwarming to see Jeffie believes in hiring the handicapped?(Extreme sarcasm intended)Has he drafted anyone who is healthy and injury free?

Chris,

Might be gone before we pick.

Marine Joe has a point...

I just realized what the 'plan' is.

It's the kicker.

Ireland is planning to draft a kicker and is even now loading game tapes so Philbin can learn from the master how to fist pump for field goals.

Whle Flacco is hurling 70 yard bombs for TDs; the Dolphins will counter with 50 yard field goals.

Orlando,

Lattimore Would've Been Nice.

But I Am Happy For Both My Favorite RBs They Went To Great Opportunities.

E. Lacy and J. Franklin With A. Rodgers Throwing The Ball To 4 WRs. And 1 TE.

That Will Be Fun To Watch. Packers Are My 2nd Favorite Team Right Now. And Superbowl Favorites To Dashi.

The 49ers Are Stacked At RB And Keep Getting Better. They Can Run The Wishbone Option If They Want

I LOVE this pick by the Jags. Look out for him...

I have this sinking bad feeling Ireland blew it. This draft had so much promise and feel bummed this is what that reality has turned into. He could have moved up to grab an LT (our biggest need)and did not. He could have stayed put at 12 and got Eifert and saved us the 2nd rounder and did not. Mike Sherman has to be wondering WTH is going on with 4 out of 6 guys for the defense. I was completely fine with Jordan in the first but after seeing how the rest of this has gone...now I am unsure.

This team is beginning to resemble a team that's run by a guy that came from a winning organization(Philbin).

First a very strong foundation. 2nd a very strong structure. Lastly the paint and cosmetics.

This year seems to be firming up the structure while adding some cosmetics. We'll be a much stronger team in 2013, though not quite sb material.

2014, looks to definitely be "Open House". 2013, I expect to be "most surprising" team in the league. This year we make hose bashing talking heads take notice.

No longer will they be able to use us as the butts of their sick jokes.

OK Swope would be a steal in the 5th round.

Howeve, it is all about bpa right now.

Dadsmith,

We have no idea how these guys will pan out. No one does. What I do is that we added speed all over the field.

Darkoak,

You might be right. I don't know enough about Gray and what he could do for us. I think I'd like to see another vet just to feel a bit better about things.
