Dolphins seriously exploring trade-down market

The Miami Dolphins have spent the past couple of days phoning various other NFL teams trying to gauge interest in the No. 12 overall selection as they try to prepare themselves for an attempt to trade down from their first round selection, multiple NFL sources are telling me.

Although the Dolphins have perhaps a handful of players they would be satisfied taking in the first round of the draft, which begins Thursday at 8 p.m., they clearly believe some of those players will be available and thus be a better value later in the first round.

It's impossible to know what players exactly the Dolphins have eyes on, so to speak, particularly for later in the round. But these are some of the possibilities:

Cornerback D.J. Hayden of Houston.

Safety Kenny Vaccaro of Texas.

Tight end Tyler Eifert of Notre Dame.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson of Missouri.

Defensive tackle Sylvester Williams of North Carolina.

Guard Jonathan Cooper of North Carolina.

And yes, Manti Te'o of Notre Dame.

The fact the Dolphins are clearly doing much more work on trade down scenarios and not trade up scenarios suggests two things:

One: The club is likely exploring ways of retrieving a possible second-round pick in the exchange because it may give up one of its current second round picks to Kansas City for LT Branden Albert between now and Friday. Trading down, getting a late first-rounder and getting back a second-rounder in the mix could mitigate the sting of giving up a second-rounder for Albert. It would leave the Dolphins with multiple second-round selections, which is what the team has today anyway.

Two: The Dolphins don't love their options at No. 12 and believe there is more value in players lower in the draft.

A caveat, however, is that the Dolphins aren't the only team wanting to trade down. Because this draft's strength and greatest value are expected in picks 15-17 to around 35ish, there may be several teams looking to trade down.

The more teams looking to trade down ... the harder it will be to trade down.

Mante Teo = Tebow in a skirt. PASS

GREAT! Now I'm confused.

I "get it" that Teo's Boyfriend pretended to be a Girl.

But if Tebow wears the Skirt, does that mean he's fooling his Boyfriend into thinking he's a Woman?

You young kids today with all your Metro-Sexual things and what not. It's so confusing.

Anywhoo.....does this mean Teo and Tebow are engaged? I hope not. Can you imagine the fight over who gets to wear white?

Cmon miami you have alot of picks plus 2 compensation picks take nd tight end and open up that field for miller and tannehill run an offense like new england with 2 great tight ends, please be wise and take the lsu cb tattieu hes gonna be a stud

This Is A Good Toss Up Ireland Has.

Trade A 2nd For B. Albert.

Or

Fix It Thru The Draft.

Either Way. This Is The Fins #1 Priority.

The new Logo is a little difficult to get used too.

But I think it all depends on.........ORIENTATION(ahem).

NOT LIKE THAT Adama, calm down. I mean the Dolphins orientation on the Helmet.

The Nose needs to be slightly down and the Tail up in the air.

(GREAT: Now Adama's thinking, Face Down, Butt Up, Dats Duh Way We Like To.........)

It's an innocent Dolphin for Christ's Sakes!!!!

Mark in toronto, no matter what Ireland does, good, bad, otherwise you will never be happy. Keep your sewage mouth shut and let the man work. Oh, and get a life too. Im sure all of the BS that you type and all the negative hatred you spew means you are just a hater with no life. If you face just one fact you will be a better person. The fact is: you no nothing about what it takes to being a GM of a football team, Ireland knows more about this than any of us put together and yet you can criticize every single thing he does thats reported or not. Give me a break you idiot.

Just because they are looking at trade down does not necessarily mean it will happen. If we did trade down however, I am still sticking to my previous posts of trading down with Minn. I would give up our 12th and either Starks, Soliai or Bess for there 23 & 25 respectively. I doubt we keep those players on the team past this year specially with the Gibson purchase (if he pans out), and the fact the Odrick can play inside with whichever DT we keep.

Min. Could use both WR & DT help and we could use both picks to fill needs in Tank C. (DE) or Vacarro & a CB (Trufant if he falls) JMO

smoke screening in so beach. I thought you said the Dolphins were turned off on Fat Albert?

Interesting comments from the guy that can and will fill page upon page of non-football related posts bickering back and forth with his incestuous bastids...

how about that #12 slot in the upcoming draft eh? Havent talked about that yet...
Jackass.

Dashi elam a probable firsr rd pick

Tavon Austin will probably be another Taiwan Jones.

No thanks on austin

Mando is right (scenario 1), Looks like the trade for Albert is all but a done deal hence the reason why Ireland wants to find a trade down partner to recoup that 2nd rounder back.

If that happens, lets hope we dont trade down too far and miss out on alot of good prospects.

Xavier Rhodes,Justin Hunter,Tavon Austin,DeAndre Hopkins,Desmond Trufant and Johnathan Cyprien would all be available with a not too extreme trade down.

Seems like thats the way to go imo.

Hahahaa

"The fact is: you no nothing about what it takes to being a GM of a football team"

You mean know?? I love when people try to tear you apart using their best failed 2nd grade grammar. Buy a book, you rag.

And if you knew who I was, you'd know I'm more than fair towards Ireland. I praise what he does right but I rip right into him when he does wrong. And he has done wrong.

And as far as lives go, you'd kill to have my life.

The Fins Don't Need A TE.

Definitely Not 1 From This Draft.

You Do Realize This Is One Of The Weakest TE Class In The Last Decade.

None Of These TE's Screams Star.

They Barely Scream Solid TE.

None Of These Guys Are Better Than C. Fleener(A 2nd Round Pick) . And What Did He Do His First Season? With The Same College QB. 26 Catches 281 Yds 2 TD's.

These TE's Might Be More Similar To K. Rudolph. And Were Was He Picked? Mid 2nd Round.

So You Want To Spend A #12 Pick On A TE. When Better Players Are Out There. At Bigger Position Of Need.

1. Vaccaro S.

2a. Jamar Taylor CB.

2b. Damontre Moore DE.

3a. Brennan Williams OT.

3a. Dion Simms TE.

Taking Vaccaro could involve a small trade down. If so, and depending on compensation, I'd take a shot here at David Amerson CB/Giovanni Bernard RB/Darius Slay CB.

Of course the year the Dolphins have all these top picks!

GM: Worst NFL Draft in past 10 to 12 years

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/mike-freeman/22122564/gm-worst-draft-in-past-10-to-12-years

Mark,

He is just picking on you, because he is jealous of your profile picture,Likes us all!! LOL

There! There's my pick at 12. A small trade down for Vaccarro.

Still no Football related posts from you though. Only name calling and Rainbow Room announcements.

You know......this isn't a Truck Stop Rest Room! I'm SURE you'll have better luck there.

Thanks for stopping by, Good Luck and watch out for those State Police Stings!

Man... we are at 48 hours until the Draft kicks off. Right now you couldn't beat 5 words of truth out of these guys with a 5 gallon bucket of sodium pentathol and a case of 12 year Old Scotch backing the beating you're administering.
There may be deals already in the barn, Miami may be playing it by ear. I doubt that however. Last Year Ireland knew three weeks in advance who his pick was. It was similar with Long, Pouncey and likely Davis. The one flyer was Odrick, but he is panning out better then some thought.
I gotta be honest, Odrick is the lowest rated player taken in the 1st round by Ireland. Yes, It was under the heavy handed Fat Tuna's guidance... but still, the only time a "Trade Back" in the first was considered and acted on gave us a player that took some time to hit his comfy zone.
I'm not certain Miami can't answer this so called LT emergency without selling or buying the whole damned farm. Winston is there to stuff into the right side. If Ireland thinks Albert's feet stink then cut bait... can't make a mistake if you don't make the mistake. There have been more then one team be VERY successful with a O-line that was lite in one spot, and who knows how hard Martin has hit iron, Guy may come out and knock heads. Albert took a few years, why should Martin be any different?
If ya GOTTA... take Fluker with the #42 pick. He played in Alabama in a system that looked as pro as they come....
But don't sell that #12 short... Get a player that can make a long term difference, grab Eifert, grab Cooper, Grab a DE to help out Wake... GRAB ANYONE that Miami can start day one... who gives a sticky damn if we have 400 new draft picks if only 395 of um ever start a game. #12's start games... #25's end up in the Draft grade "C-" pile....

I'd pay very little attention to what's being said out there right now. SO many smokescreens and so much bogus info. If lots of people are reporting we're trading down it probably means we're trading up.

That's the fun part of this draft for us. SO many different ways we could go, unlike last year when we needed to get that QB.

Adam Scheftner also reporting the two teams more willing to trade up in the draft are Atlanta and Miami..

Mark in Toronto, Your an idiot with no life. Your on here endlessly spewing your opinions as if all of the miami dolphins front office are here to appease just you and only you. Some ego you have, "I would kill to have your life? Really? Your an idiot as i previously stated and it is now confirmed.

The one guy I like a lot that's only started to get a lot of attention is this kid Hayden. I have a lot of questions about Milliner (always did) and I find it funny that people wanted to trade up for him ('for sure') but not for one of the OTs.

I'm not as high on Rhodes as I was, so I'd love to see us still a guy like Hayden somewhere after the 12th pick.

Of course the year the Dolphins have all these top picks!

GM: Worst NFL Draft in past 10 to 12 years

=============================================

If that's not the elephant in the room. I've thought of this quite a bit myself. So, as usual, you have to do the best you can with what you have.

I've come to a couple of conclusions nonetheless.

1. It's an inexact science an no one can really say how any of these guys will do at the next level.

2. We have a lot of ammunition and despite what anyone claims, there are quite few upgrades and potential stars that WILL come out of this draft.

If it's a weak draft for us, it's a weak draft for everyone else. We just have to target the right guys and make all our picks count.

It is going to be very hard for a draft pick to make this football team. Between last years draft and this years free agency, who do you cut?

I think we will be picking for depth at OL, RB, CB and LB, not necessarily in that order. I know some of you still think we need a tight end, but I think we are set.

A smart, FAST, middle linebacker would make the team. So would a brutal, straight ahead running back.

Trade down? Yeah, who needs quality?

And For The 1001 Time.

The Fins Don't Want To Emulate Or Even Look Like The NE Offense. Have Any Of These Coaches Come From That System?

Who Is The #2 TE In Green Bay?

Who Was T-Hill's TE In College?

Our Offense Would Emulate The Saints Offense Before It Looks Anything Like What The Pats Run.

Our Offense Is Designed More Like The St. Louis Rams Offense Under Vermeil And Martz. 4 Good Wr's And 1 Fast One Cut RB That Can Catch. With The No Huddle Thrown In.

You Do Realize The Pats Offense Isn't That Dynamic Because When They Play Playoff Defenses They Get Stopped.

When Brady Won The 3 Superbowls He Was Throwing To 4 Midgets. Not 2 TE's.

And Again, The Pats Offense Is Made For Brady And His Arm. Brady Lacks Elite Arm Strength. His Arm Is Barely Above Average. Brady Is Accurate. But He Lacks That Big Arm To Go Vertical At Will.

Drew Brees Has A Better Arm So He Uses 4 Wr's. J. Graham Lines Up Wide. Rarely Do You See J. Graham On The Line.

A. Rodgers Can Go 4 Wide.

T-Hill Can Go 4 Wide.

Looks like I'm hanging with a buddy Thursday night, who's having some women problems. A little down on his luck. Jesus I hope he's an NFL fan and gets his head straight in a hurry so I can watch the damn draft.

Is it wrong to be tuning him out and watching intensely when the picks are being made?

Why do idiots always post first. I wish all you FIRST idiots would just go away.

This is possibly the worst draft class in 25-30 years. At least thats what they were talking about on radio.

@ 3:17 ... enjoy reading my posts... many more to come..

you mad bro???

I THINK THAT A THIRD ROUND DRAFT PICK AND A SIXTH ROUND DRAFT PICK ARE MORE VALUABLE ASSETS TO TRADE DOWN FOR IN EXCHANGE FOR A MID TO LOWER FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK. THERE'S NO WAY THAT I GIVE UP A SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK FOR LEFT TACKLE BRANDEN ALBERT. MY FIRST THIRD ROUND SELECTION IS POSSIBLE.

Brady "Ace" is staying calm and making those 2nd, 3rd and even 4th reads when the play starts to break down.

At that point they almost resort down to a sandlot type of football, finds the open guy and keeps the chains moving.

Brady doesn't do it with Arm Strength. Good blocking up front and SMART, VERY SMART receivers.

These two TE's are changing things up a little, but that hasn't been their bread and butter of the past!

Heck, ya have to be an idiot to still be a Dullfin fan! LOL!!

Craig,

Wuld e settle for you sending a hooker to his house? That way you can stay home and watch this joyous occasion, without having to worry about feeling bad for him?

would he

Agree with odin. That Revis trade yesterday has probably made all GMs go back to their Boards and revise them. Especially Us, who are sandwiched now between the #9 and #13s by the Jets. Trade down one and acquire Vaccaro? Certainly a possibility if the Jets agree not to take him at 12.

Broward County was very smart not to give welfare to the 4.4 BILLION DOLLAR man who hasnt had even ONE winning season.

Not mad at all, i just cant stand all the negativity that you spew. Like most, i come on here to maybe see a different side and maybe open my eyes to see other peoples opinions on players or whatever football. You, take verbal shots at somebody (ireland) for making some mistakes. No he is not perfect, and i got news for you BRO neither are you.Im sure you NEVER make any mistakes with your job. So let the man work you ego ridden spew idiot

hahahhahahahahha

Mark from Toronto is a crying little girl. He sounds soooooo tooooough on here. He is just a pizzzz ant

SINCE THE COMPETITION IS STIFF AS FAR AS TRADE DOWNS.. IT'S LIKE THE SAYING GOES.. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GETS GOING. IT'S GOOD VALUE WITH ANOTHER THIRD ROUND DRAFT PICK. WE'RE LACKING A SIXTH ROUND DRAFT PICK ANYWAYS. WE CAN DRAFT MAYBE FMR UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI RUNNING BACK, FULL BACK, MIKE JAMES. BY THE WAY WHOSE ALSO THE FMR BACKUP RUNNING BACK TO THE MIAMI DOLPHINS CURRENT RUNNING BACK, LAMAR MILLER. MIKE JAMES SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN THE SIXTH ROUND OR SEVENTH ROUND. HE'S A NORTH AND SOUTH RUNNER WHO WANTS TO POUND THE BALL FOR YARDAGE. I THINK HE RAN A 4.5 OR 4.4 FORTY YARD DASH AT HIS PRO DAY WORKOUT.

Canadiens talking Miami football? Hilarious!!

Whats wrong with a little stop off at the rest area? Quick, fairly convenient and you always seem to swallow with a smile!

;)

No, spewing miami football like they have a clue of what the hell is really going on. Ok Mr GM Mark from Toronto.

Tyler Eifert at 12 He'll wind up a jet at 13 otherwise

Yeahh, Jets need TE. We got theirs

Is it wrong to be tuning him out and watching intensely when the picks are being made?

Right or Wrong, it's going to happen. Why fight it?

IT's THE NFL DRAFT MAN!!!!

The more People write, the more confusing it becomes.heeheehee

We were born of Intrigue and raised by Conspiracy. So there.

Hey, odin, how's Debo? Do you know he has the Key to this Draft? He does.

It's Pentothal and that doesn't work anymore.

I'm pretty sure many of you won't be so anxious before next Year's Draft.

Hey toad boy,

Why don't you be a real man and use your proper name on here. If you want to call somebody out because you don't like them then don't hide like a coward behind some made up name because you don't have the b8lls to go toe to toe with someone. You just make yourself look like a juvenille wimp.

Rdubs,

Great plan, man. Thanks for the advice. I might just do that. any chance I can use your credit card?....LOL.

THE NEW YORK JETS MIGHT TRY TO TYLER EIFERT WITH THE NINTH PICK INSTEAD OF THE THIRTEEN PICK.

MIADOLFAN207,

Maybe....although they have an awful lot of holes on that team. It was funny to hear Peter King say yesterday that if they were to get a QB next year in the draft they might be able to compete for a Championship in 2015. HUH? I'd like to have some of what old Peter is puffing because that team is in complete rebuild mode right now. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's between the Jets and Raiders for who picks first next April.

Craig M, Um, calling somebody out is one thing. Most on here will back me with what this idiot has said day in day out. As far as being a "real man" my definition and yours would be 2 different meanings. Mind your own business. I am calling out what needs to be said about his negativity because its like cancer. Go Phins. "with negativity gone positive creeps in" Don Shula......

TBTT, statisically, your odds are significantly higher of picking an impact player in the first round. Your odds then increase the higher in the round you select. That's why teh values attached to those picks are higher. You do not trade out of those picks... especially when you have a full compliment. And those odds are even then magnified when you havae a gm who does not have a track record of finding players after the first round. Ireland would eb trading himself right out of his comfort zone.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | April 23, 2013 at 02:11 PM

Mark - I agree. Trading out of the 12th pick this year to gain a second pick is not needed. I'd ONLY do it if we can remain in the TOP 20. I think we still land a starter in a need position if we stay in the top 20. Falling below there I feel much less confident that we get such a player.

In the end I think they will stay put at 12 and select best player at a need position (TE, OT, DE or CB). My hope is that it's Eifert - just see the overall fit and value being right for the team.

Come on: Another year and, actually a full one for the FO and coaches to understand the talent we already have and where they may see how to plug holes before the draft. If they don't have it figured out by now, then the end of this week won't make a difference. Testing the waters is what they are supposed to do, but the real decisions will be based on need. I think (HOPE TO HELL) they have their board in order already, without potential trade process.

Ireland: "Draft the expensive positions: OT, CB, DE, QB, WR, etc, etc. And, use horizontal grading system--etc. etc..." Smoke screen or truth...we'll know by Friday evening (gotta get through the first two rounds....

ALbert isn't worth it and too much $$$ for one of the "Expensive positions." None of us are GM's but most of us can see he isn't worth the salary and 2nd round. Noone else has thought so either, yet. We can draft LT later even if we don't get one of the supposed top 3, or see where our own guys fit and play with a guard. In the scheme we are developing, you don't necessarioly need the best LT in the game (would be nice to have, but not NECESSARY). If they REALLY have a player targeted higher and want to trade up I will support that try but I hope they otherwise don't sacrifice picks, we can still do well, but no need to panic.

I'd rather see them use 12 wisely or trade down for more picks and let them fill their horizontal list.

I really like the idea of Eifert and giving Tanney another weapon, especially a good TE would be nice but, again, not necessarily our most important need at 12 and not fitting with the supposed guidelines. I have always wanted a 2 TE set but, again, the scheme doesn't necessarily require it so i don't expect to see it happen. Lots of teams seem to want Austin so We can work out deal to trade and play. A player like Vacarro might suit us better but still not in the framework for a 1st round pick value bassed on above. Or, take the best DE available-- a good pass rush helps DB's and LB's, shuts down opposing offenses and keeps our scoring opportunities better.

Waste of time about possible trade issues (either picks or our own current players). Hoard as much as you can in the 1st and 2nd and trust our fortunes will be changing upward. Even the NFL is giving kudos to Ireland and the boys--three prime time games (only one at home, though) but will take it!
