Dolphins wanted Josh Boyce over Jelani Jenkins

Post-draft stories of players expecting to be on one team and winding up with others are interesting to me.

I have two such stories for you involving the Miami Dolphins.

Both involve Florida Gators and, ironically, in the end the Dolphins ended up not picking a Florida player they liked while landing a Florida player they liked less than someone else. This is the story of former Florida tight end Jordan Reed and former Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins.

The Dolphins, it seems, wanted Reed. According to a source close to Reed, Miami got on the phone with him during the third round and told him they were going to select him with their second of two third-round picks (No. 82 overall).

So Reed was on stand-by waiting for the 82nd pick and hearing his name called to the Dolphins when he saw Miami had traded the pick to New Orleans. He ended up going with the 85th pick to the Washington Redskins.

The Dolphins obviously thought a deal sending the 82nd pick in exchange for two fourth-round picks (106 and 109) was better value than picking Reed. And that was that.

The Dolphins had a high fourth-round grade on TCU receiver Josh Boyce. They got on the phone with Boyce at the top of the fourth round and told him they were going to select him with the seventh pick of the round, No. 104 overall.

But as soon as Boyce got off the phone with Miami, the New England Patriots called and told him they were going to pick him with the fifth overall pick in the round. The Patriots had acquired that pick earlier in a trade with Minnesota.

The Dolphins resorted to Plan B and picked Jenkins with the 104th selection.

"As soon as I got off the phone the Patriots called me,” Boyce told The Fort Worth-Star Telegram. "You never know. I’m just glad God gave me the opportunity to get drafted. I can go forward from there."

Boyce is a rare blend of size (206 pounds) and speed (4.49) who also happened to produce in college. He caught 66 passes for 891 yards with seven touchdowns in 2012. He had 61 catches for 998 yards and nine touchdowns in 2011. He caught a 94-yard pass against West Virginia last season.

The Patriots, obviously trying to add weapons for Tom Brady, must have seen an opportunity. The fact they snatched Boyce from the Dolphins?

File it under post-draft stories that always come out after the fact.

Wilson makes the receivers better as well as everyone around him. Thats the sign of a great player.

YG,

It's possible the Jets are even more sad sack than Cleveland. Possible. They are redy to give up on Sanchez for a guy who will be worse. I've already go Smith figured out. Forget how he is as a football player for a second....did you see his pathetic behaviour Thursday night at the draft anfd at his press conference? Head down, pouting, generally looking quite depressed. He'll never make it in New York and I fully expect him to be out of the league in 3-4 years.

Sounds like Belicheat is spying on teams again.

I think we should've drafted Geno Smith he's far better then Tanny IMO.

Posted by: Craig M | April 30, 2013 at 05:10 PM

Exactly! If Gino Smith cant handle being drafted 2nd rd of the draft. He doesn't have a prayer against the NY media. Seems his psyhe may be more frail than Sanchez's even.

tvegas897,

I thought you were gone? I don't you didn't like posting to us 'fans who support regardless'.

So because you SAY my comment's wrong, that makes it so? Yeah OK, pal. Dream on!! The VAST majority of people would say our receiving core was far worse than Seattle's last year. I guess because you feel differently everybody else must be wrong. Yeah that makes sense.

I love it when someone with common sense comes on this board. You can argue the same about Marino and Brady, who has had no single great receiver since Moss. That was my point entirely. But others think Wilson was blessed with great receivers. LOL

We have a 4th round pick and an undrafted FA STARTING for us last year and somehow Seattle doesn't have a better receiving core than us. This is getting comical!

felix, maybe you haven't heard of them because you don't know football, typical Felix.

Gino Smith cooled off consiberably from his sizzling hot early college season start. He may see it as why he should have been an upper 1st r pick, but gms may see it as wildly inconsistent.

NYC and those pack of ravenous wolves media will eat this kid alive. He's thrown them their first fresh piece of red raw meat, with this agent firing episode.

AtlFin, are you kidding or stupid, most of the experts say Tanny would have been the number 1 this year. Tell where you get your information. Now I've heard everything.

"He did? Why because Armando has a source who said that was the case? Is this the same source who said the Dolphins weren't interested in McKinnie? " Craig

Dude, you're delusional. So now Mando just throws stuff on the blog to get attention, with no responsibilty whatsoever to responsible journalism. I'm sure he appreciates that comment. And no, I have never seen Wallace excel in the slot. In fact, he couldn' t even catch the long ball very well last year.

Dude, I just don't get you.. sorry. I am going to get dsome dinner and forget we ever had this conversation. LLOL

Shula, I agree and letting Matt Flynn go speaks volumes about how great Wilson is.

Based on Gino Smith's senior season, he's the type qb that may win the first 8gms, then turn around and lose the last 8gms as a nfl qb.

Also, at Gruden camp, he seemed to be fairly knowledgeable about his college offense. But didn't strike me as a very bright person overall. And Im not speaking race people.

Jmike,

After watching Tannehill in both college and pros I have no idea how he was drafted in the 1st rd.

What in the hell does their draft position (or not) have to do with how good they are on the field? Where wwas Wes Welker drafted? Craig, YOU'RE comical!! I am really going now. BYE!

TV,

Agree on Bess. Guy was one of the most consistent players on our team and always gave his 100%. I can understand the business side of it, but's cannot understand how some people think he was that expendable.

On a roster of 53 you can only hope to have so many superstars (sending 5 to a Pro Bowl would already be something else), so the rest of the team should comprise of hard-nosed, consistent players. This is why the Patriots, GB, Baltimore or the Giants are so good year in and out. They pick up the Bess' of the league and have a team of all around solid players.

I for one will miss Davone and wish him the best in Cleveland

guess this tells us why our late picks sucked balls

THIS IS THE KIND OF CRAP YOU PEOPLE SPEW, THEN WONDER WHY WE'VE ONLY HAD 2 ONE AND DONE PLAYOFF APPEARANCES IN 20YRS. WOW1

bess was a pointless trade, had cap room for this year and he was gone next. so keep him, he would of def been needed at some pt this year. we will find that out

IF YOU TRY 100% TO GET IT UP AND IT ONLY GETS HALFWAY THERE. IT TIME TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOLKS.

LIKE VIAGGRA. LOL...

Yesterdays Gone 4ever, you sound like a pooooooosy to me chump. Get off this blog and back to your sissy job.

Yesterday you think you are real funny. I and the rest of us here have had enough of your shyt

YG,
If we didn't make the players it's not on Bess' shoulders. Not sure if that's what you're implying. He was never a #1 receiver and no one would suggest that we thought of him that way.
What are the players you want on your team? 53 Mike Wallaces? Kinda hard to manage the cap like that. Maybe 53 Egnews? All the potential, cheap but don't produce. What?

Look at GB and their WR core. Seem to work for them to have 4 capable WRs. Or the Giants with Nicks, Cruz, Manningham or Randle? Why is it hard to think that we were a better team with Wallace, Hartline, Gibson AND Bess than without him?

Does anybody remember the last time we were able to beat the Cleveland Browns? Me neither.

yesterdau says he is not speaking of race, then why say it jackofff

arturo dont bother with Yesterday, he is a fool

YG has made a ton of racist comments.

meant didnt make the playoffs...not players

Ok, I can't resist this classic by YG

IF YOU TRY 100% TO GET IT UP AND IT ONLY GETS HALFWAY THERE. IT TIME TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOLKS

Translation- Since nothing else has worked worth a crap for the last 20 years, let's pretend this is the first time we're trying something new!

And I think i speak for some of the intelligent fans like Dusty, LOL and Shula72, STOP SHOUTING YG. WE HEAR YOU!

My dinner is finally ready :)

STOP SHOUTING YG! WE HEAR YOU!

yg has some mental issues fellas, i wouldnt push it to far. just steer clear. yeah hopefully bess wont eat us up week one, wouldnt that suck

LOL,
I'm an optimist an have faith in humanity. I'm still hoping to have a decent football conversation

Posted by: dusty bottoms | April 30, 2013 at 05:43 PM

Best case scenario is that we win the game but Bess puts up 100 yds receiving with a couple of td's.

Kinda like Welker. He killed us repeatedly but can't feel but happy for him. Great player who was a Fin at some point in his career

agree bess will be missed

maybe we just rid ourselves from this piece garbage that is Yesterday'sgone4ever. my job here is done. see you later

REMEMBER THIS DUSTY, I KNOW YOUR ADDRESS. SO, DONT MAKE STOP BY WITH MY CHAIN SAW. I'VE JUST GASSED IT UP.

like i said fellas....

YG = JACKASS

Gotta give credit to Ireland for doing his homework but that's what happens when you trade down. He should've learned his lesson when he traded down from the 12th to select Odrick over Pierre-paul. I just hope these two players he missed don't come back to haunt us.

I doubt Collins is even gay lol. He is at the end of his career can not find a job, and now gets all this media, SI cover, Nike contract and without a doubt some team will bring him in just for the publicity. It's worth another $4 to 10 mil when all said and done smart move Collins if only there was a pink team to play for lol.

Go read Armando's Tweets.

Ireland's "master plan" is already unraveling, as he has begun inviting every available LT to camp for tryout. Desperation hangs in the air over Davie.

No replacement for Long, just like he had no Plan B for Brandon Marshall.

Keep telling yourself we had a good offseason, FanBoyz...........like the band that kept playing while the Titanic sunk.

Mediocrity is Jeffrey's middle-name.

Well I am 100% sure we will bring in. OT FA. There is no doubt now McKinney, Winston someone. They r not about to go into this season with the key to our season ( THill ) blindside open to get crushed

Mediocrity is Jeffrey's middle-name.

Posted by: I. R. Lendzuchs | April 30, 2013 at 06:02 PM

.

We WISH Ireland was mediocre!! If Ireland was EVER mediocre they'd throw a parade!

If T-Hill gets injured it would be a blessing in disquise just like when Henne got hurt and Matt Moore proved far better.

moore that was a disaster if henne doiesnt get hurt we have andrew luck right now

True dusty but my point was Moore is the better QB. He was ranked 12th and T-Hill is 29th.

well thill is the future and moore is a backup. to set thill back a year would be a disaster. thills potential wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than mediocre moore

I agree Ireland had no backup plan for losing B Marshall or Jake Long or Reggie Bush. This team can ill afford to lose any good players because Ireland can not replace them.

not true moore. he replaced marshall with wallace. replaced bush with miller. jake long was garbage and we havent a clue yet who he will replace him with but im sure its someone just as good, not hard to do with how bad long played

Wallace isnt near as good as Marshall and it took a year to even get Wallace.

Replaced Bush with Miller? You are funny.

took a year where we knew we wouldnt be good and got 2 third rd picks also. wallace has big potential. marshalls a head case who drops ball after ball and has never even played on a team that made playoffs

And watch how bad T-Hill looks without Jake Long and Bush.

yes easily, bush did nothing here

I. R. Lendzuchs- you sound silly. Let the hate go dude, it reflects more on you than on Ireland. The plan B for Marshall was this off season. ALL THE MOVES WE MADE PRIOR TO THIS OFF SEASON WERE DONE, SO WE COULD HAVE AS MUCH MONEY AND DRAFT PICKS AS WE HAD THIS OFF SEASON. No one can deny the money and picks we had this off season was a job done well by Ireland. NO ONE!!!! If you do, you are just hating on Ireland and nothing you say on the topic is relevant or believable. Our team(been a DolFan since '82 and still showing support) is on the rise and we are LOOKING much better now than in the past and you want to concentrate on the man that has put us into this position with his moves and do so stupidly. Our team is exciting again and Ireland had a lot to do with it. Get over yourself.

dusty, Miller was on the team last year.

I'm not sure how much of this stuff I'm believing. We heard Austin was a target. We've heard Eifert would have been our pick if we had stayed at 12. Now were hearing Reed and Boyce were targets.

Whatever. We probably targeted Joeckle, Fisher, Milliner and Elam too.

We got who got and most of the so called experts are at least rating our draft class a B.

It may not mean a whole lot but in years past we've had some C and D grades and they turned out to be true if not worse.

As far as our LT position, the sky is not falling. There are options out there and there will be even more options, we have plenty of money and trade ammo to get it done if they really want to.

let's just hope that Jeff gets in right tonite with Clabo
