Dolphins wanted Josh Boyce over Jelani Jenkins

Post-draft stories of players expecting to be on one team and winding up with others are interesting to me.

I have two such stories for you involving the Miami Dolphins.

Both involve Florida Gators and, ironically, in the end the Dolphins ended up not picking a Florida player they liked while landing a Florida player they liked less than someone else. This is the story of former Florida tight end Jordan Reed and former Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins.

The Dolphins, it seems, wanted Reed. According to a source close to Reed, Miami got on the phone with him during the third round and told him they were going to select him with their second of two third-round picks (No. 82 overall).

So Reed was on stand-by waiting for the 82nd pick and hearing his name called to the Dolphins when he saw Miami had traded the pick to New Orleans. He ended up going with the 85th pick to the Washington Redskins.

The Dolphins obviously thought a deal sending the 82nd pick in exchange for two fourth-round picks (106 and 109) was better value than picking Reed. And that was that.

The Dolphins had a high fourth-round grade on TCU receiver Josh Boyce. They got on the phone with Boyce at the top of the fourth round and told him they were going to select him with the seventh pick of the round, No. 104 overall.

But as soon as Boyce got off the phone with Miami, the New England Patriots called and told him they were going to pick him with the fifth overall pick in the round. The Patriots had acquired that pick earlier in a trade with Minnesota.

The Dolphins resorted to Plan B and picked Jenkins with the 104th selection.

"As soon as I got off the phone the Patriots called me,” Boyce told The Fort Worth-Star Telegram. "You never know. I’m just glad God gave me the opportunity to get drafted. I can go forward from there."

Boyce is a rare blend of size (206 pounds) and speed (4.49) who also happened to produce in college. He caught 66 passes for 891 yards with seven touchdowns in 2012. He had 61 catches for 998 yards and nine touchdowns in 2011. He caught a 94-yard pass against West Virginia last season.

The Patriots, obviously trying to add weapons for Tom Brady, must have seen an opportunity. The fact they snatched Boyce from the Dolphins?

File it under post-draft stories that always come out after the fact.

yeah dusty, miller was already on the team. get with the program would you.lol

hilarious rick, some people..... he drafted miller knowing he could replace bush, solid pick

THE DRAFT WAS SOLID AND REMAINS TO BE SEEN HOW IT PANS OUT BUT I CAN SAY I THINK THIS TEAM WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR BARRING MAJOR INJURIES FOR THIS REASON!! THE FINS DRAFTED TO BECOME A BETTER DEFENSE AGAINST THE PASS AND TO UPGRADE THERE PASS RUSH. MOST TEAMS IN THIS DRAFT WERE DRAFTING FOR OFFENSIVE WEAPONS INSTEAD OF UPGRADING TO STOP THE PASS. IF THIS STRATEGY WORKS THE FINS WIN 12 GAMES THIS YEAR!! THAT'S RIGHT 12! WHY? HOW? THIS IS A PASSING LEAGUE SO IN ORDER TO WIN YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOTH PASS AND STOP THE PASS. LAST YEAR DESPITE HAVING A TERRIBLE SECONDARY THE FINS STILL FIELDED THE BEST RED-ZONE DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE,SO IF THE PASS RUSH DOES IMPROVE WITH JORDAN/WAKE COMBO THIS WILL MAKE FOR A FAR BETTER SECONDARY THAT IS MUCH IMPROVED ON PAPER. NOW YOUR TEAMS LIKE COLTS,FALCONS,SAINTS,PATRIOTS,STEELERS,AND BENGALS ARE ALL PRIMED FOR UPSETS IF THIS STOP THE PASS STRATEGY WORKS. IF IT DON'T THAT'S AT LEAST 6 LOSSES! I SEE AT LEAST 3 VICTORIES FROM THIS GROUP. 10-6/OR MAYBE 12-4!

Jenkins has a lower floor than Boyce, but also a higher ceiling. I can see why we wanted to lock up a slot candidate...I sure did at the time.

But...we signed multiple guys after the draft, and Bumphis, Collins and Sinkfield along with Matthews and Binns...I'm feeling pretty good we got a slot guy in there.

I'd rather have Jenkins and one of those guys than Boyce.

Granted, I'd rather we'd lost him to a team we weren't facing twice a year, but on the flip side...if New England drafted him at any position other than WR he'd be a sure bet. But WR? If New England wants them they are toxic.

Belicheat drafting wide receivers is about the same as Shula drafting running backs in the 80s/90s.

When you say the Dolphins "wanted", you really mean Jeff wanted. Why do you keep covering for Jeff?

They no chew you asss yet, Armando?

Replacing Reggie Bush with Miller is like replacing Dan Marino with Feidler....lol

Replacing Jake Long with J Martin is like replacing Don Shula with Cam Cameron.

"get sense" is legally retarded in state of florida

Steelers picked 2 Players that I think will make immediate impact. Jarvis Jones and Le'veon Bell.

dusty, give us an update on Albert?

jarvis a stud. albert can be had for a second rounder still. 4 teams talking to them

EJ Manuel sukks. Good for Us.

dusty's favorite song ...from the Wizard of Oz... "If I Only Had a Brain" LMAO!

Mark Sanchez is a better QB than Geno Smith is. Good for Us.

manuel cant be any worse than what they have had

This is whyi dislike Jeff Ireland. Impact te and really good wr at good value n end up with jerkins and others that won't make the team. Reached for Jordan, Thomas, Davis and Jenkins. He got lucky with Taylor and like jones pick n 7th. Ireland's track record with 2-4+ picks has been atrocious. Hoping Jordan's production isn't like it was in college.

Replacing Da Beast with Michael Egnew is like replacing Armando with Dooshi

agree john, loved the free agency but didnt like the draft other than taylor

Well, Sanchez did lead the Jets to 2 AFC playoff games.

Actually 2 AFC Championship games.

Dorks total freakin dorks I compare all of you with my butt

Go dolphins

True, dusty. lol

E

Wr is the hardest postion to transtion to the NFL i mean Bess wasn't even Drafted, and i thought he was a for sure 3-4th rounder. But then i also thought Ryan Grice-Mullen who played with Bess at Hawaii was going to be a 4-5th rounder as well, we brought him in and he just couldn't play in the NFL. We also drafted Pat Turner(USC)at #87 & Brian Hartline(OSU)at #108....Turner looked like the better prospect but was a huge bust, and Hartline was a bit of reach & he turned out to be a nice pick. Remember NE taking Chad Jackson from Florida in the 2nd round! that guy ruined my fantasy team that year(FYI never never draft a Patriot WR not named Welker or Moss)...Boyce may be great but when has NE drafted a viable WR? Troy Brown in the 8th round back in 1993? haha NE sucks at drafting WRs nuff' said, they found Gronk and A-Hern kudos to them they were high rated players that fell in the draft, Gronk was pissed he wasn't taken in the 1st round & NE stold him in the 2nd. If you look at the WRs over the Brady era it's like musical chairs new FAs every year & rookie WRs that never see the field...Ya'll can have Boyce fate saved us on this one i believe...Jenkins is our new Zach Thomas just watch & D.J. will be our new J.T. it's funny how history repeats itself... Dion Sims vs Jordan Reed? well either we take 2 guys named Dion or 2 guys with Jordan in there name....Guess it was Dion. Everything i'm hearing about this guy sounds like we stold him. This guy is the most complete TE in the draft and he fell to the 4th round what? We needed a run blocking TE that can catch to replace Fasano...Kyle Miller wasn't gooing to make the team anyways so fate may have stopped Jeffy from making a bad pick on Reed and Boyce...i feel way better about Jenkins and Sims, funny thing is those are the 2 picks that most pundits praise us for....dang Jeffster just can't win these days...we got your back bud Fins Up...Pat Down....Jest Jets Jest....Buffa-who?

Geno Smith sounded pretty good on Grudens QB show. Time will tell.

Dallas Thomas is going to be a Pro Bowl guard someday if he stays healthy. Book it. Go to youtube and watch some game film on him (not a highlight reel but the play after play game film). Perfect technique on every play and great at pulliing. It would actually be a shame to have to play him at tackle as he would be fine at it but he'll be a pro bowl player at guard.

I think we drafted quite well I loved this draft

Mike gillisee is one hell of a tail back, dion sims is a moose we got a real kicker 3 very fast Corners that can make plays

Marc, it was a typical Irescum draft. Pure garbage. 2 fer and 3 fer busts again.

And a qb hunter WOWWWWWW

If Geno Smith got pissed because he wasn't drafted where he wanted then he doesn't know what awaits him in the Big A if he plays and doesn't perform adequately.

Jeff for president hip hip hurray

Triple Rainbows & Sparkly Ponies for the FanBoyz!

Ireland Rocks!!

Geno will crack like humpy dumpty

Can he pass-protect, PF72? Dallas.

Boyce is not a slot wr. He is 6-1 and ran low 4.4 at this pro day...faster than R. Matthews and much stronger. He also is better with the ball in hand...very natural in the open field running the football. Hard to catch or bring down in the open field. I have seen no such skill from Matthews who isn't sudden or slippery.

Boyce will provide an explosive element to the PAts passing game that they haven't had in a while. I am happy Jeff decided to draft cbs because we will need them.

Gibson is not fast...dude didn't catch one 9 route last year. He is an underneath target who isn't quick or slippery. U will see when he an Hartline are boring u to death being tackled by lb's on plays they should be breaking for chunk yardage.

The jets won't win 3 games this year

Dallas Thomas can pass block he is very solid and versatile he plays every position

Then, I believe the time has come for Cogs to either move to the R side or be gone. Many of the T-Hill sacks and hurries last year were on him also and not exclusively on Long or Martin. Besides, we don't need Players that become easily frustrated.

I don't know many of the Players that NE drafted. However, I'm wary of Belichick's talent for drafting. I hope they all sukk.

Miami dolphins, we simply are the best, north-south-east-and west, superbowl is our quest. beat the jets, the bills too, the patriots-they are through! division title or wild card, no one beats us in our yard. Miami dolphins, scored another touchdown, defense will stop them now, all you can say is wow! beat the jets, the bills too, the patriots, they are through! division title or wild card, no one beats us in our yard! Miami dolphins!

dusty, Bellichick runs circles around Ireland.

Ha!, I caught you all White Supremacists off balance. Ryan Swope? Pluueesae

Nat Moore, Bush was not a WC one cut back. He was constantly dancing at the hole. Yes Bush replaced by Miller.

Yeah i hear ya oscar i think Richie is outty...he's one of the oldest players on a very young team. He can go to STL and man-crush on Jakey's Long while wearing cheesy Batman and Superman costumes....No wonder why our O-Line has been declining we had our 2 best guys dressing up like 5 year-olds for Halloween...jeez these guys are millionaires!!! at least buy/rent some quality costumes...C'MON MAN!

John, Ireland's draft is getting great reviews from the talking heads, why not you. Oh right a blog expert. I know that Ireland never talks to Phibin about picks, and that he works in a without input.

I really don't care what costumes they used on Halloween, man. It's the Field I care about and their performance on it.

Bush was our only playmker. And Tanny's safety valve. He will be sorely missed.

Neither do I care if a Guy is White, Samoan, Black, gay or whatever. If they perform well, they will be greatly appreciated.

Oscar, pick up your game man. The blog is going down the toilet and you aren't helping out.

What, it's my fault now? I bend for Nothing or Nobody if I think I'm right.

How happy is Boyce he's on the Pats instead of the Fins?

BREAKING NEWS:

"Dolphins Paperwork In League For Jonathan Martin, Brandon Albert Trade".

Only one Time was I forced to bend down and, sometime after I got out of there, the head of the Program was fired for malfeasance and my least favorite Teacher went to Jail. Don't fukkk around with me.

YesterDicky,

That is old news.

Some of you forget we live in the Information Age, or don't quite comprehend it yet.
