« Trades involving 2nd-round picks have been terrible | Main | Dolphins trade up to pick Dion Jordan »

For me, Hayden if the pick is defense, Eifert or Austin if the pick is offense

I want the Dolphins to pick D.J. Hayden. There's no denying that. I've made the case in the newspaper and I think the need is obvious.

Let's face it, the NFL is a passing league and the Dolphins secondary has been frustratingly inconsistent.

They made Kevin Kolb seem like Joe Montana.

They let Andrew Luck break the NFL record for most third down conversion passes.

And more problems loom because Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Tom Brady (twice), Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger and Joe Flacco are all on the schedule in 2013. You have to be able to overcome that kind of firepower quarterback play with dynamic pass defense.

But ...

What if the Dolphins go offense? What if the Dolphins continue their offseason upgrade of the offense that included Dustin Keller and Mike Wallace?

Well, a right tackle at No. 12 would be terrible. A guard? Terrible. A running back? Not happening.

Thinks two players: Tavon Austin and Tyler Eifert.

If you are any kind of frequent visitor to this blog you know I believe the Dolphins have underestimated the importance of tight ends for years. They let Anthony Fasano's mediocrity lull them into a false sense of satisfaction. This while the Patriots went crazy turning tight ends into some sort of newfangled weapon.

Eifert would turn that tide back for Miami. He's got prototypical size at 6-5 and 250. He's not fast but he's not slow. He presents a matchup problem for linebackers and some safeties, although he doesn't separate with the consistency I'd expect. His hands are good. He's a good and willing blocker.

Austin, meanwhile, is more a dream pick. It's likely not going to happen. He's probably going to go higher than No. 12. Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland doesn't like little guys and Austin is 5-8. He's only just a slot guy. His arms will prove too short to be a factor along sidelines.

But the guy is a playmaker. His tape makes your heart skip a beat. He's dynamic. He is a boom or bust pick, but if he succeeds, he's going to be great. I'd make a leap at being great over a chance to be good.

Was Jordan the highest rated DE?

We're idiots!!!

Lol think about this.. KC was wanting our 1st 2nd round pick.. now thats off the board.. looks like theyll push for our 2nd or a third.. pretty genius by Ireland.. cant give what you dont have

Like the pick...

Love that we only gave up a second with swapping picks.

Still need a LT, RB, and QB.

ESPN may be critisizing the fins, but NFL network is praising Dion Jordan

horrible.......how dumb!!!

there are too many needs to trade up......

....he is so dumb!

Now if only Zack Ertz lasts until 54 I'd be ecstatic

Still WOW...that just made every corner on the team that much better. The defensive line is going to be awesome. Now get us some offensive playmakers tomorrow or else!

I hope that rushing the passer doesn't take that much intelligence.

Irelands age is higher then his IQ.

WHP......

YES.....I didn't want a LT in the 1st...or @ least @ # 12 or higher......

I like the pick.....I like guys that put the QB on his @ss......I like that Ireland went and GOT the guy he liked.....I LOVE this team....and Ireland is winning me over....

Find a way to land Austin tonite.....and I might die in my sleep.....

Not happy about losing that 2nd rounder, would have been better if they took our 2nd,,,,2nd. This kid better be good. They've been comparing him to Jason Taylor for a while now.

I hope Keller does well and gets resigned because I'm worried about that position beyond this year. Is Ireland being truthful, is he REALLY counting on Egnew? Yikes.

Wow what a major retard Ireland is... I hope he didnt trade next years first pick.

Eagles drafted a country goof

Wow, You guys that said what a freat pick must be drinking "Jeff Irelands summer time Kool-Aid"

FINS will now have a "pincer movement" for attacking the QB.

I can see opponent scoring dropping by at least four points allowing Fins to win the close games.

will someone add some constructive criticism rather than just saying the pick sucks. When you say that it seems you would critique it no matter the pick..

You dolts wait and see. This league is about ATHLETES. That's what this guy is. Think about it, Cameron Wake and Dion Jordan. Double team both and you have Dannell Ellerbe up the middle.

It's about STRATEGY fellas, you're thinking Checkers, Philbin's thinking CHESS!

If Dion Jordan is half the player JT was, then we should be happy! I like the pick put pressure on QB's improves your secondary immensely.

This kid wad used to cover wideouts and some think tightends are gonna keep killing us ? He can rush and cover and thats something this D has been missing for years.

We could always trade up to the 1st Rd.

Dont count on it Chase

Welcome Mr. Albert... You will now be our LT AND take our remaining 2nd round pick. Holy Crap!!!

Markb,
We still have another 9 picks and just got the best DE in the draft. What is wrong with that?

Lol think about this.. KC was wanting our 1st 2nd round pick.. now thats off the board.. looks like theyll push for our 2nd or a third.. pretty genius by Ireland.. cant give what you dont have

Matty,

Genius??? Jordan had 5 sacks last year!!!

The fins will probably take OL with the 2nd pick or trade it for Albert. I sitll think that they will take swope maybe with the first pick in the 3rd round. So, when do we take a CB and TE.

Ansah was one of my picks. I knew we needed a guy opposite Wake but I didn't think we would go out there and move up for the best guy out there!!! Good job Ireland!!

Armando, Armando, where are you?

Wow what a major retard Ireland is... I hope he didnt trade next years first pick.

Kris is this you or is someone impersonating you?

The cost is only the 42nd, while swapping from 2 to 3.;
that's OK...but can he play in the NFL????????? Time will tell......

@ Oscar..why ? is he not smart?

YES.....I didn't want a LT in the 1st...or @ least @ # 12 or higher......

I like the pick.....I like guys that put the QB on his @ss......I like that Ireland went and GOT the guy he liked.....I LOVE this team....and Ireland is winning me over....

Kris,

I don't get it. Jordan's a great athlete but he had 5 sacks last year!!!

Ireland pick this kid with a red flag on one of his shoulder? is Ross money not my.

BTW, the people down here at Sun Life ERUPTED in applause with this pick!!

You didnt read my post.. he got the guy he wanted, only giving up a 2nd.. KC wanted our first 2nd which they cant have so if the trade happens it goes for the 2nd 2nd rd pick or the third..
I know you dont like the pick but the kid is an athlete..

Wow what a major retard Ireland is... I hope he didnt trade next years first pick.

Phins 78....

being IMPERSONATED by one of my fans...i'm in BLUE.....

pay him/them no attention.....

Gotchya

Jordan has been either 2nd or 3rd in every mock I've seen. If the Jags would have took him at #2 noone would have said a word.

It's the trade up thats surprising.

I still say that we keep our 2nd and let KC sweat..Give them a 3rd

OK so the fins are giving up on Vernon. Another wasted pick. Will the fins trade someone on the line? Are they going to trade Odrick (yet another wasted pick). So if the starters are Wake and Jordan, where do Odrick and Vernon play.

He better turn into the next Von Miller.

I just saw him talk, Buster. I mean that's my Specialty.

So far it looks like we didn't have to give a 2014 first rounder to get up to #3 after all.... if this holds true, value charts really mean NOTHING AT ALL this year.

Anyway, I would have traded all the way up to #1 or #2 for Joeckel, but I put my faith in Dolphins FO and I hope Dion Jordan improves both our pass-rushing and LB departments in a good way.

The cost is only the 42nd, while swapping from 2 to 3.;
that's OK...but can he play in the NFL????????? Time will tell......

Buster,

Giving up the 42nd pick in the draft is not the issue. I couldn't care less about a 2nd round pick that Ireland probably would have missed on but I just don't see Jordan being physical & strong enough to play in the NFL.

Lions just blew it too.

Those are the real fans Bobby, good to hear. This blog doesn't represent the fans well because there is a Jets fan or two who roam the place every day just to insult the team. Their posts are laughable, they try to make it look like they're fans but it's obvious they're not.

This was an awesome pick and trade. We only gave a 42 for Jordan. Our D is going to be incredible next year.

Way to Go Jeff ireland.

Now, Ansah, his mother is a Nurse, his Father an Oil worker. I certainly can see the diff.

Orlando,
Why giving up on Vernon. Remember the Giants with Strahan,Osi and Tuck. You can never have enough pass rushers

Again, Ireland befuddles all the fans and so called draft experts. I hope this turns out to be the breakout player we've needed from the 1st rd.

Orlando I don't think they're giving up on him. They seem to see him as more of a situational guy and special teams standout. Our special teams were pretty good last year and he was a big part of that. Often overlooked but very important squad on any good football team imo.

Dolphan Rick you are right. It is the trade that is shocking everyone. He was projected by many as the 2nd round pick.

Also had the pick been Lane Johnson no one would be surprised.

Anyway, I would have traded all the way up to #1 or #2 for Joeckel, but I put my faith in Dolphins FO and I hope Dion Jordan improves both our pass-rushing and LB departments in a good way.

Exactly. I don't understand why they didn't trade with the Jags to get Joeckel.

And Mingo did NOTHING this year. I absolutely HATE Ansah & Mingo as NFL propsects.

WHP....

this guy Mingo only had 4.5.....

i think we'll be OK.......

This Dion have to get some steroid shots to get strong because looks to me very delicate for the NFL.

Again, Ireland befuddles all the fans and so called draft experts. I hope this turns out to be the breakout player we've needed from the 1st rd.

Woodshed....

I think DC said it bet...."this league is about athletes"....and Ireland got us one....

WHP,
It sucks that Mingo and Ansah before the Jets pick. They'd probably take one of them not learning from the V Gholston fiasco. They may actually draft decent Guyana

"I just don't see Jordan being physical & strong enough to play in the NFL."

The good thing about this statement is that the same things were said about Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, and A LOT of great players in the past. We will see. Every mock had this kid going in the top 5. But now espn is questioning the pick? Could they hate on the Phins anymore than they already do?

And Kiper is freaking because we didn't take a tackle in Johnson who doesn't even fit into the zone blocking scheme to begin with. These guys are complete morons.

Hate autospell...meant decent player

To put a positive spin on it. Our DL will be sick this year if Jordan is worthy of the third round pick. Tom Brady better be looking over his shoulder next year cause the Dolphins DL is coming. Wake, Jordan, Vernon, Odrick, Starks, and Solia. We are deep on DL.

Also, you can argue that a big time pass rusher is the second most important position next to QB. In this new era of football you have to come after the QB.

I wonder who the Raiders will pick with our #12 or if they'll trade down again for more picks.

WHP....

this guy Mingo only had 4.5.....

i think we'll be OK.......

They're the same guy. Great athletes who don't make enough plays. Every time I watched LSU--Mingo was invisible.
