It's a UF day for the Dolphins, Carpenter on notice

The Dolphins have drafted three University of Florida players today, the latest running back Mike Gillislee and kicker Caleb Sturgis were drafted in the fifth round.

Two things:

Dan Carpenter, who struggled through the middle of the 2012 season, is officially on notice that Miami isn't afraid to replace him.

"Coming into the league you know you have to compete against the best," Sturgis said. "I've seen him kick and he's got a great leg. It'll definitely be fun competing against him."

Despite the slump and finishing the year on injured reserve, Carpenter did connect on 16 of his final 17 kicks before getting hurt.

Gillislee, meanwhile, was a rotational running back at Florida. He rushed for 1,152 yards while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

The happiest guy on the Dolphins?

Center Mike Pouncey, a Florida guy who predicted the Dolphins would pick three Gators player"s.

Wow that's crazy I can't believe I just predicted that" Pouncey tweeted. "I will be handing out gator shirts to all my teammates this coming up week."

The addition of Gillislee puts Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller on notice. Considered the favorites to win the starting job and then split carries, both now have another player that is a legitimate player who can possibly catch the ball as well as they can.

"I'm just ready to compete," Gillislee said.

Another great point YG. I think Ireland knew that this draft only had a few standout playmakers on offense (Austin, Eifert,...). Therefore he went ahead and addressed the offense in FA and used the first 2 picks on defensive playmakers. Even traded up to draft Jordan who they feel can become a dynamic pass rusher.

Still scratching my head on the Willie Davis pick. Not so much the pick but the fact Ireland again traded away picks to get a guy that would have been there in the 4th.

Rick, this move was a little squirrely, but it wasn't as bad as it appears.

Ireland and Philbin had Will Davis pegged as a "Steal/Sleeper" type of pick.

With enough higher ranked CB's still on the Board, Ireland thought he could trade down, gain some 4th round pick(which he did). And get Davis on Sunday.

But then a Mini-Run started on CB's and he got cold feet. He decided he HAD to have Davis, so he dove back in and did what he had to do.

This, I think can give us a little insight as to just how important Davis is/was too Ireland. If he was this hell bent on getting, it makes me think the Coaches must have felt the same. If this is accurate, it means Davis will get every opportunity, almost like the treatment High Picks get, to lock down the nickel spot.

Ultimately, thanks to this draft, we will no longer have to watch Tom Brady just eating guys like Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson ALIVE-LOL!

Davis is YOUNG, Freaky Talented, gets interceptions and even set the NCAA record for Passes batted down(17 in ONE SEASON-WTF!).

Good Bye Carroll, Wilson, Patterson and probably even RJ Standford. Good Luck and THANK GOD you're "Outta Here!!!!"

Long had an ER built in his new house in St. Louis and Bush's yards were the product of being in the right place at the right time. Nothing special and 1000 yards isn't even close to 100 a game.

They upgraded two WRs and are developing their own talent. Not only that but they're plenty of options still out there at T and RB with more options to come once players are released.

Tannehill is in a great situation. Get a grip.

Yeah ir, dont listen to the fans about their own team. You keep listening to the national media who pick the Eagles to win it all every year. The same national media who picks the Bills and Chiefs as their surprise playoff teams. The same national media who called the Dolphins crazy for not taking Lane Johnson, THE SAME PLAYER WHO DOESN'T FIT INTO A ZONE BLOCKING SCHEME.

You want the real lowdown on the Dolphins read the Dolphins beat writers opinions or the opinion of REAL fans in any Dolphins blog. It's laughable that anyone would listen to the national media about their hometown team, no bias there! LMAO!

cadillac misi sucks and grimes will start and is much better than smith or davis

Da'Rick Rogers would be a steal

Exactly YG. Some people just don't get it.

Q. How do you help your rookie QB move up to the next level in year 2?

A. Take away his pro bowl LT and his 1000+ yard RB and replace them with special teams players.

Nice pick

4.4 speed for s Jones - small school

another corner huh

Phins78,
The Bills are usually one of the best teams in the nfl, first half of the season. Then absolutely worst in the 2nd half of the season. LOL...

safety

I guess many people haven't noticed Buffalo picks close to same spot nearly every single year for the past couple decades. LOL...

Just for the sake of conversation, has anyone discussed a trade of Incognito for Albert?
Possibly throw in a kicker and a RB to make the deal work.
Incognito is expensive, doesn't fit system and will be a FA in 2014 and gone.

Odin,
You and I are the only 2 people in here.
We play Indy, Atl and NO before October 1st.
One of us will be in here crying and one of us will be in here laughing in your face.
Have fun now buddy.
Rock on.

Lets not compare apples to oranges dusty. The first half does include the first 4 games of each season. Was just trying to give undercover Bills fans in here a little faith. LOL...

Every team in the division had a better draft than the Fins except the Jets.

Banking on a group of Hartline..Gibson and Matthews to compliment Wallace will have most D.Coordinators laughing while game planning. No wrs with wiggle and speed...no wr with size that can get down field. This wr core is awful considered this is suppose to be a West Coast offense we are running which puts a premium on wrs who can do some thing after the catch.

lol ok yesterday

disagree on jets, imagine if we would of gotten richardson and millner. we all wanted those guys. they could of had millner and eefiert though

When we draft in the top five next year Ireland better hope he still has a job and Phibin who is suppose to be an offensive mind better start drafting some real offensive talent to develop. Right now there is no young talent to develop on the offensive side on this roster.

Dusty,

I see Jordan as being one of those players a qb better account for as soon as they break huddle. This is the same question qb's will be asking themselves.

"Is he rushing or is he in coverage?"

Alvin,

In your opinion we miseed out on your players. Sorry, but i am siding with the coaches and GM on their choices. They are building a team in their vision, not yours.

Hoping Greg Reid is an UDFA for us, that kid will add a spark to our return game.

Guesing wrong could be fatal to that qb. LOL...

Phins78,

Great Point.

Who Here Values James Walker Opinion Over Mando's? Even Over O. Kelly?

First Off, I Don't Value No One's Opinion With 2 Last Names. Take Oscar Canosa.

HUH............... WHAT HAPPENED?

DID ALVIN BREAK HIS MADDEN AGAIN?

Ones

doubt that. guy cant just run around a tackle in nfl. hope the best for him

dusty bottoms,

I liked Bess too, he was a reliable receiver. One of the few on our team who could actually catch the ball.
BUT, Philbin wants all the receivers to not be one-dimensional in his offense. He wants them to be able to move them from one position to another. Bess is a good player, just not in Philbin's offense.

This is it then. We still can make some interesting moves through UDFA and normal FA, but it already looks like an A-/B+ draft to me. Let's hope I keep thinking the same in 4-5 years (I believe I will).

Good job Dolphins!!!

Nah, It's not you 2 guys here only, I'm keeping you company for now and increasing the hits here. Un fortunately for you, TMH is looking into this automated autonomous Posters technology which will be more efficient and cost effective than hiring you People. In any case, Paul and I will continue to be here.

Their kind of building it in my vision.

I had Jamar Taylor and Dion Sims in ALL of my Mocks!

This is the best I've done since I had Reshad Jones in ALL of my Mocks!

NEW BLOG

Good draft by Ireland overall. Interesting to see no WR taken by the Fins even if we had a shot at Allen or Swope.

I was high on Allen but I guess our staff is comfortable with R Mathews. Would've liked for Ireland to get Stepfan Taylor. On Swope, not even Sherman liked the kid. It was surprising he dropped to the 6th when we had him going on the fourth.

Finally, someone mentioned that drafts are becoming more of a science. I agree to a point on picks from Rd 1 to 3 (still a lot of misses though), but rest of the draft still seems like a complete crapshoot. Don't havenumbers to back this but I bet there are lot more undrafted FA starting in the league that guys drafted in rounds 5,6 or 7. Cameron Wake, Davone, Kurt Warner come to mind...

Let's hope Ireland gets some good players signed on Monday. I saw LB Chase Thomas undrafted and would like to go get guys like him

I hope Ireland has some other plan for addressing the offensive tackle position, as this was not addressed at all during the draft(Thomas is a guard)and it's our weakest position. He did a good job solidfying CB but what about free safety (7th rounder does not count)? I do like the move to draft a kicker.
Overall I find this draft puzzling. Our defence was our strongest unit last year and this draft was too defence oriented. And yes, I know we addressed offence alot during FA. Our offensive line is actually worse now (no Long, no replacement for him) than last year. Too many holes still remain.
Grade: D plus

You have to give it to IRELAND.. he did well!

Gillislee could of been a second rounder on any other team. he is the future of the phins and Lamar miller better beware.

Every position of weakness was addressed in this draft- except for LT/RT. I will come back to that in a moment. As far as not taking a WR- especially Swope. Swope is going to have some good games in the NFL and when he gets another concussion and so on, he becomes the next austin Collie. Sherman coached the kid and the Dolphins didnt want him. Enough said. Rishard Matthews is our number 4- I trust our coaches.

Now back to LT/RT problem. This is simple. They sign Mckinnie, Gaither, Clabo or Winston for about half the price of Albert and without giving up a draft pick. They can all be signed for 1-3 years and that will allow the Dolphins to draft a LT next draft or sign a younger free agent in one of the next two free agency periods. I would take any of the 4 guys above compared to what could have been drafted after Round 2 on Friday night.

Our draft grade C. Ross, Ireland and Co. a cancer for the dolphins. I do not see a real upgrade. Next year, we'll be drafting a OL, a DE to replace the former 1st pick Odrick, etc etc. A step forward and two steps backwards.
Bess was a solid player. It was stupid to let him go. Maybe he was not flash and colors, but who is in Miami.
Sad, sad, sad. Moreover, we have one of the most difficult schedules in the league.
I don't see a bright short term future.

We definitely strengthened our defense - it will be harder for people to pass on us. Hopefully our run defense will not worsen.

The offense seems to have gotten some talented athletes who are inexperienced and need coaching up. If we get lucky eventually we will get a secondary change of pace RB (assuming Miller is what he is cracked up to be), a second TE (who if we got really lucky and he avoids injuries, loses weight and speeds up could become a Gronkowski - probably a 10% probability), a versatile lineman who will probably best be used as a backup to multiple positions, likely a better kicker.

All in all this draft makes us a better team than we were before the draft and could pay off in the 2-3 year timeframe but it is not nearly what I had hoped for.

Good post LOL - agree with who will most likely be going.

We all liked Long, Bush, Bess, Fasano. Dansby, Burnett had good years. But if we kept them all, we'd be the same old 7-9 Dolphins.

We should have more explosiveness, athleticism and depth. Good upside.

But we need Tannehill to improve, and the coaching staff to scheme, teach these players, and make good game decisions to make the playoffs.

Cautiously optimistic.

I said before, OT is as not as pertinent of a need as OG. Martin and Jerry will be the OTs. I, also, look for Yeatman to push for a tackle pot. OG is more pertinent because Incognito is on his way out.

My question is, in 4th and 1 where is the RB in this roster that can go and get it.

D.Thomas????

Personally wish would of taken swope.Hes got chemistry wth tannehill and speed I kind of wanted to c another burner to add with Wallace hartline and gibson more the possesion type plus obviously fins liked sturgis but u take him in 5th and the consensus highest rated kicker hopkins was taken a round later.Dont mind they took kicker that just throws me off abit.

Here come the "Fire Jeff Ireland" banners flying over Sun Life Stadium. He overdrafts a Kicker in the 5th round who was projected as a 7th rd or undrafted. He wasted a pick on Jelani Jenkins who can't get off of blocks and stop the run. Only Ireland uses the draft to build our Special Teams instead of our whole team!

I like this draft. I was pounding the table for Swope in the 5th round, but if Ryan and Mike were not then there must be a reason.
