Latest: A couple of new possibilities emerge

You guys know I love D.J. Hayden. I have today in The Miami Herald and in private conversations with sources implored the Dolphins to take the Houston cornerback with the No. 12 overall selection.

For those of you that have said Hayden at No. 12 is too high, I present to you today's report from ProFootballtalk.com which states that the Raiders, eager to trade out of the No. 3 spot, are eyeing Hayden as their pick after a trade-down.

And PFT.com is reporting that one source said that many teams view both Hayden's game film and his medical file as better than Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner.

So there is that.

Now this:

The Dolphins are not completely averse to the idea of trading up if, if, if it is for the right guy.

The right guys?

1. Luke Joeckel.

2. Dion Jordan.

I am told that if Joeckel does not go No. 1 to the Kansas City Chiefs -- a very, very strong possibility because they are leaning 60-40 in favor of Eric Fisher -- then the Dolphins will make calls to see about landing Joeckel if he falls to say, No. 3 and Oakland.

Understand that it would take a mint for Miami to go from No. 12 to No. 3. It would probably include next year's No. 1 pick and I don't know if Miami is willing to do that. But if the Branden Albert trade falls through and suddenly Joeckel is dangling out there, Miami may consider it.

By the way, on Albert, the clubs continue to talk (reportedly) and the holdup continues to be draft pick compensation.

Albert remains the preferred choice for the Dolphins. But if that falls through and Joeckel drops, that door opens.

Another player the Dolphins really like who may drop is defensive end Dion Jordan.

Many mock drafts have Jordan, the Oregon Duck, going to Jacksonville at No. 2. But what if he doesn't?

What if Jacksonville picks an offensive tackle? What if Jacksonville prefers Ezekiel Ansah?

Then Jordan will be dangling at No. 3 and Oakland. And as I just stated, the No. 3 overall pick is for sale. The Raiders want to trade down to add picks and remake their team.

Well, the Dolphins have a lot of picks and a desire to add a dynamic pass rusher if possible. Jordan, the club believes, can be a dynamic pass-rusher.

Does that mean the Dolphins will mortgage the draft and possibly part of next year's draft to make the move? Probably not. But can anyone say it definitely, absolutely will not happen?

No.

If Ireland Plays It Right. He Can Add Youth To The Defense and Offense.

If we move up to get a LT, or give up a 2 for Albert and long term deal, we can consider this offseason a bust. To let Long go, then use up a draft pick to sign Albert long term is moving backwards - you basically just threw away a draft pick. And if we move up to grag a LT that means Martin was a bad draft pick last year, and we don't have the other picks to fill the other, numerous holes we have.
Now I'm afraid, very afraid.

ireland is a complete idiot if he gives up that to move up

CraigM,

I don't give a damn what the Raiders want. I wouldn't give no more than what the value chart says at least has to be given. If they wanted more I would tell them to go fvck themselves.

This isn't an at all cost trade up. No matter how much the Raiders get from any team that trades up. History proves they'll find a way to fvck it up anyhow.

CraigM,

Basically, the less the Raiders demand, the less they'll have to fvck up, as they usually do anyway.

false mass, albert much better than long

YG,

I don't think you read what I wrote. GO back and re-read it. I didn't say give more than the chart says. I'm saying we might be able to do a deal for less, in that the Raiders are anxious to add players.

Ugh.

I'd sooner watch a Paulie Shore movie marathon than do that!

MassDolphin,

Neither Long nor Albert seem like longterm plans. Both have often injured histories, then, when Long wasn't injured he's steadily shown decline.

Long didn't seem like a longterm solution even if he stayed. You guys need to stop crying and focus more on the true facts in the matter.

neither Long nor Albert seem to be very plausible longterm futures. Shorterm, yes. Longterm, highly unlikely.

Posted by: Craig M | April 25, 2013 at 03:57 PM

CraigM,

Then even better is what I say. Just that its highly unlikely any teams accepts lower than what the value chart states they should receive.

Remember, these guys are professional gm's. They know the value charts better than you and I do. Its their freaking bible.

Pick at #12 Eifert

Trade First 3rd Round Pick for Albert

Trade top 2nd Round Pick and other 3rd Round Pick and get back in 1st Round and select Trufant

Use 2nd Round Pick on BPA (DL or WR (Swoope)

Still have 4th, 2 5th, maybe a 6th for Bess and 3 7th's to add depth

Would you take

Eifert
Trufant
Albert
BPA in 2nd Round late

Has Ireland been fired yet?

Just Reported:

ABSOLUTELY NO TRUTH TO RUMORS IRELAND HAS A MONEY AGREEMENT TO A CONTRACT WITH ALBERT.

those were all false reports.

Thank you Jeffy!

I see that Dez Bryant say the Honey Badger is the 'best player in the draft'.

I think what he means is the 'best player to hang out with and get into trouble with'.

This guy Bryant is a nut job. It's all going to come crashing down for him in the not too distant future.

WOW Dashi, That's sooooo deep.
LMAO.

Clearly Ireland mistakenly thought Long would sign and didnt have a plan B.

WOW!!!

Now reported all 3 tackles could go 1-2-3. Its reported teams are making call to move into the top 5 to take Lane Johnson too.

Hold on boys, its going to be a helluvah crazy draft!

If Dashi Plays It Right. He Can Actually Post Something That Isn't Quite So Dumb.

"NFL Draft insider Tony Pauline reports there's "still a good chance" the Lions trade into the Raiders' spot at No. 3, and the Cardinals have "evidently entered the mix" as both clubs pursue Oklahoma LT Lane Johnson.

Pauline confirms Johnson is "the player everyone wants at that pick," and Detroit and Arizona are some of the NFL's most left tackle-needy teams. The price to leap from No. 5 to 3 would obviously be less than going from No. 7 to 3, making the Lions the favorites if this is something GM Martin Mayhew has serious designs on doing. It's no secret the Cardinals covet Johnson, but they're not one player away from NFC West contention and need to keep their seven picks."

OMG....It's pandemonium!!! Now EVERYONE wants Lane Johnson!!! This draft is going to be the craziest draft of EVER!!!! Dogs & cats living together. Mass hysteria.

We could use a Dez Bryant about now. Thanks Irescum.

My vote if between cornerback and pass rushing specialist
I gotta go with the pass rusher. The reasons the Dolphins already have an all pro on one side that gets double teamed imagine if they get someone that comes from the opposite side INSTANT HELP for the WHOLE DEFENSE including defensive backs.Another thing is I believe it is easier to get a Pass rusher that will have an immediate impact this year not in the future because of Wake on one side and cornerback is a very difficult position for a college player to move up to the pro level and be very good HIS FIRST YEAR.The Dolphins have a situation that makes a pass rusher a no-brainer if the choice is between pass rusher and cornerback which is really not the case because they have many needs and they draft using a horizontal structure.

Well, if Lane Johnson goes top 5, it means at least one previous top 5 player falls. Most likely its Ziggy Ansah.

dashi is a child

DAMN, CHIEFS LEFT TACKLE BRANDEN ALBERT. LET'S GO AFTER FREE AGENT LEFT TACKLE BRYANT MCKINNIE AND ARKANSAS PINE BLUFF LEFT TACKLE TERRON ARMSTEAD AND/OR OREGON LEFT TACKLE KYLE LONG. SIGN BRYANT MCKINNIE TO AN ONE YEAR DEAL OR A TWO YEAR DEAL TO HELP DEVELOP A LEFT TACKLE. FREE AGENCY CAN ADDRESS A LEFT TACKLE NEXT SEASON OR LOOK TO DRAFT NEXT SEASON FOR A LEFT TACKLE. LET'S DRAFT NOTRE DAME TIGHT END TYLER EIFERT IN THE FIRST ROUND. TEXAS A&M DE DAMONTRE MOORE IN THE SECOND ROUND. TEXAS A&M WR RYAN SWOPE IN THE THIRD ROUND.

Dashi, When's your "BOY" oin waking up?

John Jerry has to be replaced also.

Looks like there will be a lot of reaches in this draft. It may go down as one of the craziest drafts in history. I think 3 qb's will go in the 1st rd.

Get your popcorn guys, its going to be one helluvah curve-balling evening. LOL...

Yesterday, your logic makes no sense. You say that it is no big deal to give up a 2nd and 3rd this year because we have two of each already!? That is like me giving you a million dollars when I have two million dollars. IT IS STILL A MILLION DOLLARS I'D BE GIVING YOU.

Plus, those value charts are only guidelines, and useless ones at that. Last year, it would have taken a king's ransom to move from #3 to #2, because RGIII was there. This year, not much separates the top dozen picks. There will be Pro Bowl players taken in the 2nd round, and the more picks/darts we can keep/throw, the better our chances. I suppose I'd give up a second round pick to move up and take Fisher at #2. But if we could trade that same pick for Albert, then we could have Eifert and Albert or Warmack and Albert, etc. as opposed to just one player (Fisher). I suppose I'd opt for Fisher, but it isn't that obvious to me.

What if (big if) Star Lotulelei is available and the Dolphins believe his medical issue is a non issue... then, would the fins pick Lotulelei and trade either Starks or Soliai to KC for Albert?

You know its a weak draft when everyone is talking linemen. lol

The light loves itself, so the darkness makes no sense.

The darkness loves itself, so the light maes no sense.

So all I can say to you, is it depends on whether youre the darkness or light. Each loves itself, and to each the other makes no sense.

I guess that all of this makes no sense either. If not, still good for you my man.

You right YG I wasn't thinking about the 12 pick the other team would get from us this year.

Still IMHO, 2 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd is too much for an offensive lineman. Even if one of the 1st is next year.

But lets get on to the draft and actually see what they do. I'm phyched!

YG-
Sorry if I missed something but I don't have time to go back 20 posts. But based on your last several, it appears that you are in favor of trading away multiple picks based on the value chart to grab one of the top two OT's.

And the so called experts know the value charts inside and out. Here's what I think of the value charts- total B.S. At the end of the day, you are trading away multiple high round picks that could net a future starter/building block for the future for the luxury of moving up to hopefully grab your future LT.

Value charts are based on pre-draft research and that player's projected worth. You know how many guys end up being bums or players that don't live up to the hype? Several. Give me numbers, especially in the higher rounds. That's is one of the reasons teams like the Patriots have been a model to follow for years. They miss on players too, but they have picked about twice as many players as anyone in the league under the current manangement regime.

So explain to me why we need to trade away at least two high draft picks for a single LT when we have needs at a bunch of other positions again?

One thing Joeckel, Fisher, and Johnson all have in common is they suck at run blocking. Can't believe teams are scrambling so much for these guys. I hope we don't panic and instead pick someone in Rd 2. Menelik Watson of FSU would be a good choice there.

Heck, even the Sun Life Company is leaving the loser Dullfins.

I see that Dez Bryant say the Honey Badger is the 'best player in the draft'.

I think what he means is the 'best player to hang out with and get into trouble with'.

This guy Bryant is a nut job. It's all going to come crashing down for him in the not too distant future.

Craig,

Why??? B/c Dez's mother called the police on him last year for hitting her???? I think you're overreacting man. The Cowboys have him on 24 lock down & look at how well it turned for Pacman Jones when he was in Dallas...All Pacman did wrong was get into a fist fight with one of his security guards. No biggie. LOL!!!

You guys keep saying that Ireland is somehow going to screw up tonight.
Remember...Ireland respects Philbin more that Sparano could ever hope for.

Philbin has HUGE input into who gets picked in this draft and would suspect if we don't acquire Fat Albert, then the logical choice to replace Long at LT is Joeckel.

Move up to #3 and get your franchise QB's blindside protection for the next 5-7 years.

BTW, this LT just so happens to have already done this while at A&M with Tannehill so it's kinda a no-brainer at this point.

JUST SAY NO TO FAT ALBERT!

Now the reports are that Fisher is going to be the 1st pick.

I wouldnt mind drafting E.J Manuel from FSU.

What he said. Good post. Same point I was trying to make.

NHFinsfan,

Sounds good to me but how do you know the Jags aren't going to take Joeckel????

I'm confident that Irescum will bring us another Michael Egnew and D Thomas and Pat White or Philip Merling. LMAO!!

Dolfan Rick,

Depends on the circumstance. If you have 2 2nds and 2 3rds, then a 2nd and 3rd are not too much to give up because you still have a relatively normal draft.

You were going to use your 1st pick on someone anyway, so swapping where you use it is just a wash.

So, in this case the only thing youre truly out of is that 2014 1st rd pick. However, if you don't use truly solve your LT situation with Albert, youre going to be back in using a future 1st rd pick to readdress the position in the shorterm future anyway. Possibly more picks to move up and get the right guy.

This is why I call it a:

"You can pay me now, or you can pay me more later." Situation.

Albert's frequent injury history screams to me it very likely he's only a shorterm and not a longterm fix. In 3yrs, we could be looking to readdress the LT situation and it become slightly more costly.

I see albert as 2-3yr rental insurance. We'll be revisiting this LT situation in 2-3yrs. Albert's often injured history just screams it!

1st of all, I would only trade up for Joeckel, not Fisher.

2nd of all, the answer to your question is in my 4:39 pm post. Capiche?

New post is already up fellas.

The move up talk is posturing for the Chiefs so we get Albert for a 3rd rounder. Never gonna happen. We will be trading back if trading at all. expect some dudes to slide. No way you pick a guy #2 that wont be healthy by camp.

Got it YG. We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. There is no sure thing in the draft, even with Joeckel.

Me, I like to hedge my bets that I will get some pretty good players if I draft wisely in the first few rounds. Of course, Ireland has screwed up there as well, and there is no sure thing with any player. The LT position can be addressed in the short run, even with a player like McKinnie. If Joeckel blows out his knee, how does giving up a 1st round draft pick look next year, or even a 2nd and a 3rd this year? As I have repeated several times, the Fins need a lot more players than many think. We're not a LT away from the Super Bowl

Mando,
What do you make of the fact that we are looking to use our supposed treasure of picks to fill holes created by, you guessed it, our failed picks.

Need a DE? Didn't we just pick 2 last year (Vernon and Kaddu in 3rd and 5th rnds)?

CB? Davis, Smith, Carrol, Wilson (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th rounds).

TE? .... Egnew.... 3rd round - 'nuff said.

Suffice to say that we may be better trading up, as our scouting team has not proven the ability to win in those middle rounds.

I am still trying to comprehend why the dolphins let a franchise LT go and now are looking to pay the same money for a Chief reject. Long at one point was considered the best LT in the game and Albert is an above average tackle at best. On top of that they will have to give up top picks for him.

I want to have faith in Ireland but it is decisions like this that make you want to scratch your head. I mean at this point why not just draft Flucker, Cooper, Warmack, or Watson to upgrade your OL and keeping your sceond round pick (and maybe more) while at the same time saving 8 million dollars. It just makes no sense.

Dont fool around, take care of tannenhills blindside and get a left tackle now...go make deal with kc chiefs for albert, then pass rusher and tackle spots would be filled, then you go revamp our secondary and draft two corners...or texas a&m slot wr swope after we trade bess...also some teams who drafted a corner will be cutti g a corner from team....options are there...we are getting there...our overall roster is becoming impressive...

Let Johnathan Martin play LT, sign Eric Winston to play RT and draft a corner, like say Robert Alford with #54. Is Martin a top 10 LT? No. Is he a bottom 10 LT? No. He is a serviceable LT. Do we have possibly the shakiest corner situation in the league (at least until Grimes proves he can come back from FULL ACHILLES RECONSTRUCTION)? Yep.

With inexpensive RTs out there in FA and a huge need/talent alignment in the second round at corner, I say go in that direction.
