One on one with Jeff Ireland

Following the last round of the draft on Sunday, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland agreed to speak with me privately after his open media availability.

This is how it went:

Mando: Your shining moment in this draft?

"Well, obviously I went after the player [Dion Jordan] I really wanted. That was the highlight, to go up and get the player we really wanted and really coveted and be able to get him at the price we got him was even a bonus."

Mando: Why him?

Jeff Ireland: "He jumps out at me. I don't like to compare players but we do a lot of that in our business. I've seen players like him that have great success. He reminds me of several players that have played that position. They're hard to find. The special ones are hard to find.

"And I think the guy can be special. I think that's why.

"And to follow up with your question, the draft is not only just trying to fill needs. I really don't go into the draft trying to fill this need, then this need and this need. I go into the draft building the board as equal as I can. I put the players up there that are the best football players and then marry needs into the best football players. I understand everybody thinks we have a tackle need. And I would say that's something we need to address whether it's a must or a need. But that player jumped out at me and I felt like I had to go get that player."

Mando: What are you going to do at tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see. The tackle position is an important position. It's an important position. But I feel like we have some flexibility. There are some options out there. I have some things up my sleeve that might work out. We're going to have to fill the need probably with a veteran guy on the street at some point."

Mando: At left tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see."

Mando: Why not do the trade with Kansas City for Branden Albert instead of drafting cornerback Jamar Taylor in the second round?

Jeff Ireland: "Because I didn't think it was the right thing for us."

Mando: Why?

Jeff Ireland: "Well, I'm not going into that because I'm not so sure it doesn't work it."

Mando: You mean down the road?

Jeff Ireland: "Yeah. Again, I never say never. I don't want to get into the details of that trade right now when it could or couldn't happen done down the road."

Mando: The moment during this draft you said, 'Dang it, I wish I hadn't done that?' Was it when you traded out of the 82nd pick and then had to trade back in?

Jeff Ireland: "You know, that was not a moment that I said, 'Ahh, crap.' I traded out and got the extra fours. And then there was a run. You have a certain number of players on the board and when you trade out you figure someone is going to be there. You have three or four and you think someone's going to be there. And then all of a sudden, five or six picks, boom, boom, boom, boom, guys went off. And it wasn't only in that round but there were rounds where players on our board were getting picked off like crazy. I felt like I needed to go back in there and get a player we really wanted versus settling on a player."

On Mike Wallace:

It wasn't a terrible statement, but still better to say nothing at all. Although 95% of nfl players most likely totally agree with him. I do. LOL...

"Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don't understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended"

"Not bashing anyone, I don't have anything against anyone, just don't understand it"

Mike Wallace

What, WHAT, WHAT???!!! oh my god!!! Burn him at the stake!!! LMAO

What Ireland DIDN'T say:

'The trade with KC for Albert was done TEN days ago, just as dusty reported. And yes, everyone who didn't believe him then was a 'clown' and 'just plain dumb'.

"It wasn't a terrible statement, but still better to say nothing at all."

Very true, I can agree with that. You can't say anything today unless it is approved on by the media and majority of citizens. It sucks but that's our country now, he should know better.

Although I think back to when I was 27 and how many stupid things I said. Thank God there was no twitter in the 90's.

We both gave our views, opinions, guesses, and feelings. Fans can have different views.

You didn't change my mind on my guesses and I presume I didn't change your mind either.

Peace....... :-)

Trade Martin and a pick for Eugene Monroe...sign Eric Winston.

Martin moves to RT in Jax...Joeckel goes to LT where he's comfortable.

Me likey....

Just read 15 posts from Dave Hydes BS write up where he calls Wallace intolerant and that he "disparaged" gays. Seriously, here we go, anything to sell a paper I guess. Ironically out of the 16 posts I read at the end of Hydes diarrhea filled toilet bowl of a story only one agreed with him yet he didn't even understand the tweet. The other 15t people were calling it ridiculous. That will be the norm imo. People upset by this will be in the minority. The media will play it up as some gay bashing night on the town and ignorant gays will flip out causing the media to further turn this into something it is not.

Then I read this comment and I almost fell off my chair laughing!

"I would have laughed more if he still played in Pittsburgh where there is no such thing as a beautiful woman."

I would be willing to bet that the majority of heterosexual men DONT understand how a man would want to be with another man and that the majority of homosexual men cant understand how a man would want to be with a woman. I don't understand how a man wants to wear socks with his sandals. I also don't understand how a guy gets paid $20 million a year to play a game and practice 6 months out of the year when the people who are working on a cure for cancer year round don't make a fraction of that. If I post my misunderstandings on twitter should my employer put me and my misunderstandings under review? RIDICULOUS!!!

Wow, has been an hour since Wallace's post, and Hyde's already a thumper?

Yes, Wallace's post was premature and not well thought out. So, for Hyde to so quickly come out with a column against it, I say the same.

Talking about a day of reacting before wisely thinking things thru.

Is Dave Hyde also gay? He sure had a knee-jerk reaction to Wallace's comments.

What a crazy mixed up society we all presently live in. One in which nearly everyone wants to play "GOD".

WOW, am I dead yet? Seems I would be better off. LOL...

I am wondering who will step up and win the NFC West. Just for some perspective about those Dolphins fans who simply cannot bring themselves to trust Miami again. Why do you suppose that the San Fransisco, Seattle, Arizona & St Luis suddenly got so good? Just 2 years ago, the whole division was jokingly called an "Expansion Division"...
You know how you hear some people giving the Dolphins a hard time for going big in Free Agency this year? Well, don't think for one damned minute those teams out West (or anywhere else for that matter)have all traveled the path of righteousness and only stuck to the pure and righteous draft concept of building a team.
But let Miami do that.... OOOOO... Miami is trying to be an instant team. Let Miami jump up and grab a guy like Mike Wallace. OOOO, He's a one trick pony. Real quick like, had say... Cincy jumped up or Washington, they would have been hailed as genious. How about Dion Jordan ... ooooo Miami may have gave up too much or he may be a bust. Had the New England Patriots traded up and took Dion Jordan (they couldn't, they had no ammo), but had they done it.... There would be a "super nova explosion of media love talking about how much Bill Belechick was a draft genius for only giving up a 2nd round player to move from 12 to #3.
BE REAL, MAN.... Had NE or say The Steelers drafted Dion Jordan... The media blitz about it would have made life miserable...

Get some perspective... and get real... and get ready to win... For THAT and THAT alone of what the haters fear the most.

Wallace did nothing wrong. I'm so sick of everyone trying to be so politically correct. Wallace prefers women & so do I. What did he say that was so wrong??? He didn't say he hates gay people, he said he doesn't get it. I'm sorry but anyone who is straight obviously doesn't 'get it.' If you're gay then you 'get it.'

Whether it's right or wrong, it's a fact that in professional sports guys who are come out & admit they're gay are going to be looked at differently. Some players won't care but some players are not going to like sharing a locker room with someone who is gay. This is a different type of work place.

"Ireland could trade a Pb&J for fitzgerald and it still wouldn't be a good move to the haters."

Best one liner of the day.

Given the history of the Parcells/Ireland rebuild, it's NOT being a hater to temper expectations regarding 2013.

It comes down to Tannehill and an improved offense. The defense should be better.

Exactly. That's my point. We're all limited by our own experiences. I have no idea why someone would want to jump out of an airplane or race cars for a living. Why??? B/c I sure as hell wouldn't.

Twitter has become a new "social arrest" tool.

Anything you say or do will be held against in a court of "social law".

Twitter's gotten so bad, you had better have your lawyer standing next to you before you press "SEND".

The future of twitter doesn't look very bright. Its clients will so learn its ramifications, then I forsee a mass exodus to cancel twitter accounts.

Twitter needs to add a "review your post" before pressing send. Once you press send you cant get it back.

Maybe even better, add a "your post is under review". Therefore a mediator reviews your post to determine it offensive or not.

Still, that takes away from making a "live real time post". Basically signaling the end of twitter.

No problems though, twitter has been a terrible idea anyway. Great if used responsibly, but terrible for the brainless and naïve.

It is true, on the occasions that I travel to the Northeast, it always strikes me how ugly the People there are as compared to here.

You can make a million great twitter posts, however, it only takes 1 brain fart to spell your doom.

I don't care what he thing, I only care how he play and how many TD he score.

You People here don't have to worry about anything you write on Twitter. You're Nobodies.

Society has been forced to change its views on gay and homosexuality. Gay and homosexuals have become some of the most prominent, influential, and powerful members of our society.

Its all has just been a matter of time. They so control our livelihood, homosexually, heterosexually, or not. They may be the 2nd most powerful force in our society behind the Jewish bankers.

If youre a gay Jewish banker, wow!

He is not the president of USA

i don't like to knock ireland or my beloeved fins, when ireland does something good, i gaive him all the praise, like this past freeagency and moves to set up the offseason(picks), and i know this is only MY opinion but...we could've and should've took the players philly drafted..lane johnson, will NOT get beat by speed and why pay premium money to another teams discard, 2) ertz(TE) 3) LSU brawling defensive tackle to ease the $$ burden in 2014, and how about this- BARKLEY...it's always nice to have a highly touted back-up QB on the roster that has not been tested because a year removed from the draft these guys usually fetch a 2nd rounder to another team experiencing QB issues... and the biggest botch in this draft(besides left tackle) is that we didn't address 3rd and 1, this was a huge reason as to why our offense didn't put points on the board, is ireland blind, we couldn't get a stinkin 2 yard gain on the ground last year to sustain a drive, yet there was lacy, and pick after pick we passed him up, now maybe jeff knows that jonus gray is ready to go, maybe jeff knows that martin is going to be a great left tackle...but the draft is over, there is no longer a need for secrecy, so how about giving us dolfans some intel..by the way, i do like the picks in the fouth round and sims(good legs or not) is going to be a load to bring down, hope he makes the roster!

In the biblical Sodom and Gamora story, seems things had degregated so much that some of the homosexual society actually tried to have sex with the two Angels God sent to destroy that overall sinful society.

I don't believe God destroyed it for abominable sex acts alone. The entire scope of things was off the ying-yang!

Oscar you don't know me or probably anyone else on this blog to be calling us NOBODIES. My family and friends along with Jesus love and respect me which makes me a SOMEBODY. You don't have to be famous to be a SOMEBODY. I find your post to be childish, disrespectful and very TROLL-LIKE. If you want to discuss "nobodies and somebodies" find a blog that does (I am sure there is one on the internet somewhere). This blog is supposed to be about Miami Dolphins football it is not a forum for your idiotic thoughts.

The U.S. seems well on pace to become the next Sodom and Gomorra. Many countries follow our lead and influence.

For the haters out there, I hope you know the difference between "seems" and "is". LOL...

Good job Mando. Did Ireland say anything about a tight end?

Seems = firm may or may not be

Is = a definite, that could also be wrong

Problems that I see may exist with Matt Barkley:

1. Even if you can protect him, his decision making is still a little suspect.

2. Does he have the velocity to consistently get his receivers the football under the nfl version of "open".

3. With medium arm strength, Will the ball hang in the air to long vs nfl caliber safeties?

With all of these questions looming, I don't think he'll ever be a great nfl qb, but he can become a great nfl "game manager".

Plus, when plays just aren't there, Barkley needs to learn to either just throw the ball away or take the sack. He does not have the athleticism to create on the fly.

He just needs to learn exactly what he is on the nfl level and play within those bounds.

Ireland did a great job of tightening the "throwing windows" on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Also, slightly decreasing the time opposing qb's will have to throw into those tightened throwing windows.

Great job, Mr. Ireland!

Seems like ButchVa is new around here(btw I do like to lay a Lesbian once in a while but not Butchy..)

Montana had a weak are, so did Pennington, they did alright.

You have just proven my point Oscar. What does this have to do with the Miami Dolphins or even football in general. This is not the the place for it that's all Im saying.

I have never seen a gay homosexual

You forget to add two very important things:

1. Pennington never really won squat has far as playoffs go.

2. Montana also had #1 ranked very disrupting defenses during his championship periods.

Rarely was Montana in any real qb shootouts. His great defenses consistently saw to that.

What's your name, honey? Perhaps we can get to know us better...

To further prove the Montana point, the Ravens great defense won a sb with Trent Dilfer.

They do seem to be kind of contrite...

The Niners had a defense that could stop the run, get great pass pressure, and was great in coverage.

So any iniquities that Joe Montana had where completely erased!

- Se sufre mucho(You suffer a lot), a gay Patient in therapy.

If Ireland did one thing right, it was not trading for Fat Albert and getting a solid corner in the 2nd. Why is Mando calling him out on that one?

The bigger question is why we traded Bess away for virtually nothing, and did nothing to strengthen the receiving corp through the draft. I have no idea why some people here suddenly think he Fins are full of offensive weapons. We subtracted our most reliable possession receiver, and are depending on a highly paid one trick pony (Wallace goes long, nothing else), a guy who disappears during games (Hartline) and a red zone target that has consistently not done much else in the NFL (Gibson). Keller at least improved the TE position, but I see a team that still lacks offensive playmakers, especially if our young RB's (that haven't proven a thing) don's pan out.

I would offer Amhad Bradshaw a contract to provide us with a little veteran talent

Yeah, well, I give a C to Ireland's Draft.

People say that we should protect our right of freedom of speech but when someone exercises that right they get ripped apart for it, why doesn't the media and people just go ahead and say that we do not have a right of our own opinion.......It sure seems that if you aren't for gay marriage or Islam or abortion or any other controversial issue then you are intolerant and a bad person. Mike Wallace said what he felt so now they say he is a bad and ignorant person, if you don't see it the way the Media wants you to see it then your the bad guy..........EFF em all.....

On a football note, someone in an earlier post said we should trade Martin I still disagree with that the kid is entering his second year with the phins and I'm sure he has gotten bigger and stronger its still to early to get rid of him IMO..

Good points about the offense.

I think Wallace will be good if he stays off Twitter. :)

Keller can be good unless his injuries show up again.

I agree they should have drafted a WR.

Wallace is clearly an imbecile....but he doesn't seem like a bigot.

That said, just catch the ball when it's thrown to you and hate or love whoever the hell you want.

I don't understand how a man wants to wear socks with his sandals. I also don't understand how a guy gets......

ButchVa! Oh man,,, I can't stop laughing over your post. That was a good one, kudos!

If the draft is indeed a 'C' then it's going to be a long year unless Tannehill becomes a MUCH better QB.

@Al in Ft. Myers - he can say whatever he wants, so you can you. He can feel however he wants and so can you.

But to pretend that there can NEVER be repercussions for said opinions is utterly ridiculous and a total and complete cop out. Go tell your boss what you really think about them...and then play the 1st Ammendment card at the unemployment office.

Look at that kid from Two and a Half Men...he ripped the show apart last year...which was his right to say whatever he wanted to...well, I read today they just announced he is basically off the show except for bit parts.
