« Dolphins add another DB with final pick | Main | Bryant McKinnie visit could signal legit interest, or not »

One on one with Jeff Ireland

Following the last round of the draft on Sunday, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland agreed to speak with me privately after his open media availability.

This is how it went:

Mando: Your shining moment in this draft?

"Well, obviously I went after the player [Dion Jordan] I really wanted. That was the highlight, to go up and get the player we really wanted and really coveted and be able to get him at the price we got him was even a bonus."

Mando: Why him?

Jeff Ireland: "He jumps out at me. I don't like to compare players but we do a lot of that in our business. I've seen players like him that have great success. He reminds me of several players that have played that position. They're hard to find. The special ones are hard to find.

"And I think the guy can be special. I think that's why.

"And to follow up with your question, the draft is not only just trying to fill needs. I really don't go into the draft trying to fill this need, then this need and this need. I go into the draft building the board as equal as I can. I put the players up there that are the best football players and then marry needs into the best football players. I understand everybody thinks we have a tackle need. And I would say that's something we need to address whether it's a must or a need. But that player jumped out at me and I felt like I had to go get that player."

Mando: What are you going to do at tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see. The tackle position is an important position. It's an important position. But I feel like we have some flexibility. There are some options out there. I have some things up my sleeve that might work out. We're going to have to fill the need probably with a veteran guy on the street at some point."

Mando: At left tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see."

Mando: Why not do the trade with Kansas City for Branden Albert instead of drafting cornerback Jamar Taylor in the second round?

Jeff Ireland: "Because I didn't think it was the right thing for us."

Mando: Why?

Jeff Ireland: "Well, I'm not going into that because I'm not so sure it doesn't work it."

Mando: You mean down the road?

Jeff Ireland: "Yeah. Again, I never say never. I don't want to get into the details of that trade right now when it could or couldn't happen done down the road."

Mando: The moment during this draft you said, 'Dang it, I wish I hadn't done that?' Was it when you traded out of the 82nd pick and then had to trade back in?

Jeff Ireland: "You know, that was not a moment that I said, 'Ahh, crap.' I traded out and got the extra fours. And then there was a run. You have a certain number of players on the board and when you trade out you figure someone is going to be there. You have three or four and you think someone's going to be there. And then all of a sudden, five or six picks, boom, boom, boom, boom, guys went off. And it wasn't only in that round but there were rounds where players on our board were getting picked off like crazy. I felt like I needed to go back in there and get a player we really wanted versus settling on a player."

Sure, the women at the gym and beach are hot because they scare off the uglies. But those hot women are not even 1% of the women here. Most women here are average to ugly, most have had a hard party lifestyle or still do, and like most Floridians, most think they are smarter than the average bear but they aren't even smarter than the average rodent.

Wow, I see youre having a very difficult time getting laid in FLA. Sorry about your luck. LOL...

The most beautiful women anywhere are the ones that will lay you at the time. LOL...

Florida is basically a strange mix of 3rd world immigrants and rednecks. No urban sophistication in anything here. Even the rich are clueless here, they just happen to have money.

They are not ugly. It's true, but it's true they have been hard used, by Us.

The last I checked, the State of Fl wasn't running America. So, whats your point?

Wow, I see youre having a very difficult time getting laid in FLA. Sorry about your luck. LOL...

I've been married almost 2 years. FL is a very easy place to get laid, it's the hot climate, they wear almost nothing, tank tops and no bras, so they are already stimulated. Definitely easier here than in Californina where they are all stuck up gold diggers.

Philbin already said after the draft that they will probably play Dallas Thomas on the left side...Now Thomas did plat LT for 2 years but excelled at LG last year at Tennessee...so reading the writing on the wall says that LG is his postion in the NFL. J.Martin will be our (LT), M.Pouncey at (C), D.Thomas at (LG), R.Incognito(might get cut) at (RG)/J.Jerry/L.Louis(can play OT or OG)/J.Samuda/C.Burden are our other options at RG, at RT there is a hole maybe they go with L.Louis/N.Garner/W.Yeatman/P.Brown/J.Adams/A.McDonald those our the Tackles currently on the roster...Shefty is reporting B.McKinnie is coming to town to fill the need, & E.Winston is still in the mix.

no chance they start martin at lt, they will sign someone

A FA O lineman that went to my highschool just got picked up by Carolina.

I seriously doubt Incognito gets cut. Dallas Thomas will probably be depth and back up this year. To replace Cogs with a rookie would weaken the O Line

Agreed Bd12. Incognito won't be going anywhere this year. He may not be kept long term in this system going forward but he has a job this year on the Fins OL.

Cheers,

Wow, how much brainstorming would one have to do to find out Cogs will not be cut this season in favor of a 3RD RD rookie.

You guys are absolutely amazingly slow! LOL...

Jeff Ireland heard my preaching!!!!!! I pleaded and pleaded on this website for us to get a "Game Changer". An offensive lineman is NOT a "Game Changer". Before the draft, I was hoping that we stay put and get the best player available. I didn't want Ireland to trade up and get Lane Johnson. He REALLY amazed me in not only trading up, but getting a "Game Changer". Now it's time to see some drastic improvement from Tannyhill.

thats a good thing rob

Many of knew the second Dallas Thomas was drafted "3RD RD" it wasn't to replace Cogs this year. But thanks for the slow input anyway. LOL...

Time will tell with this draft.

I hope Jason Taylor can drop in and give Dion Jordan a few killer training/coaching sessions. Their body type's are so similar he could coach him up on leverage, run / pass clues, hand fighting, shedding, positioning, snap timing, health and fitness tips etc.

I still wish Parcell's didn't run Zack Thomas off like he did. He would be able to lay out study plans and show young LB's the road map on exactly how to be a successful LB in the NFL.

Both still bleed aqua and orange...maybe fences can be mended?

Cheers,

zach thomas brain is fried

No doubt dusty.

Cheers,

I wonder how smart one has to be to know that a 10th year player doesn't have a longterm career left to play in the nfl?

You guys are absolutely head of the class! LOL...

No chance Thomas take Cogs spot this year. Likely Cogs moves to RG and Thomas to LG but if not Thomas back up Cogs and Martin. Either way it's a good thing.

Hmmm...

Im sure that Jason Taylor's doing jumping jacks in excitement in the williness to come in and give Dion Jordan "FREE" pash rush lessons.

Boy, are you naïve! LOL...

any away games this year for u rob?

YG,

Come on now...we can't all be a smart feller like you bud. :)

Not just because of the Thomas draft pick-up. The line play is moving away from Cogs style of play. Ireland is not done chasing FA's imho.

I believe that Ireland lands OT Mount McKinnie not Albert (just a hunch).

Cheers,

Yesterday has that bitter bug up his arse again, looking to ridicule whoever he can. What an insecure fellow, or just very unhappy.

lets hope not, mckinnie is all but done

Hmmm....

Jerry was drafted 3rd rd and there unfounded aspirations of him immediately becoming a very good 1st year starter too.

Can Dolfans just wait a couple months before making unfounded projections?

Is there something in the water that only dolfans drink?

yeah yesterday does have some issues no doubt. dude is pissed at the world, get out a little go hang by the ocean dude

Uhhh.................

Has nothing to do with smarts, only common sense. It doesn't take a phd to know there's light outside when the sun's up.

I heard McKinney took his physical today look to be a done deal maybe or just a smoke screen to get Albert cheap 4 th rounder

Are some of you new to the planet? Just saying...

Either way we need a tackle badly

dusty,

I would go to the Bolts game if it was here.

Gonna have to settle and be glued to the brand new 60" Samsung F8000 with DirecTv and see the laces rotating on 60 yard bombs from Tanneyhill to Wallace!

How bout yourself?

Cheers,

Yesterday

1. are you still tryiing to compensate for how many people have ridiculed you throughout the years?

2. Is it frustration the wife isn't doable and you are
drooling in frustration over the fine things walking around?

3. Does pecker not poke anymore?

Which is it?

I'm from venus

im gonna go to the cleve and tampa game. after that ill be like u here in kc with direct tv

Pecker problems suck

Even if we sign Albert, we'll still need a starting LT, if we make the playoffs.

He's well known for not finishing seasons.

Dusty my wife cancelled our direct tv so back to the sports bars maybe that doesn't suck 4 hours of freedom

I would rather have McKinney

No Rob buddy,

Not disgruntled, just wished I had your address so that I could have my boys come rob your house. I want a 60in flat screened tv too.

Will you continue to pay for the Direct tv for me too? LOL...

true marc, nice excuse to get out

Friends Yesterdays MO has been and always will be to win you over and then turn around and pummel you, laugh at you, make you feel stupid.

Just a few short months back, Yesterday was giddy for weeks about Teo. Teo this, teo that. Then one day he suddenly ridicules anyone suggesting we take a defensive player, saying we need offense more importantly. Then...he raves over the Dion pick.

That is his game. He needs something for whatever reason.

YG is a flopping flipper full of pooper piper.

I think McKinnie would be better than Winston.

McKinnie helped another team get pretty far if I recall. Limp across another years finish line?

Ireland is playing it very coy...not sure if they have someone in camp looking good already from what he has seen, a FA yet to sign or a trade of some sort?

The roster will flex before the season starts.

I was surprised he didn't go for OT Terron Armstead? Project but killer triangle numbers.

Cheers,

Rob OC,

PS..... when I send my boys over for the tv, will it also include surround sound speakers? That is very important to the entertainment atmosphere, you know. LOL...

I want 4 hours of freedom every Sunday the hell with directiv beer chicks and bar food oh yea and boobs

I think we go 11-5 this year and bury the pats

That is AWESOME dusty... wish I could join ya at those games bro. Not in the cards this year.

I hope the Fins continue to improve and maybe 2014 I will target a couple of games.

Have fun and may the fastest swimming mammal win the games you go to!

Cheers,

Rob OC,

Your address please? I need that 60 in F8000 ASAP! I promise, I'll leave the instructions manual, ok? LOL...

Boy, and all of my friends thought that I was really dumb. Wonder what they would think if they ever visited here. LOL...

YG...

LOL...yeah. That is mighty sporting of ya to leave the manual.

Just knock over an electronics store...they have tons. Seriously...troll Craiglist or like Best Buy for open box deals...killer deals are out there to be had. Lot's of time before kickoff.

Cheers,

!!!!!! POST OF THE DAY ALERT !!!!!!

Rob OC,

Please...please.........

Getting robbed isn't that bad, just think of it as a great contribution to the poor. LOL....

YG... sans the surround speakers right now. That is more on the movie side anyhow.
