« Dolphins add another DB with final pick | Main | Bryant McKinnie visit could signal legit interest, or not »

One on one with Jeff Ireland

Following the last round of the draft on Sunday, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland agreed to speak with me privately after his open media availability.

This is how it went:

Mando: Your shining moment in this draft?

"Well, obviously I went after the player [Dion Jordan] I really wanted. That was the highlight, to go up and get the player we really wanted and really coveted and be able to get him at the price we got him was even a bonus."

Mando: Why him?

Jeff Ireland: "He jumps out at me. I don't like to compare players but we do a lot of that in our business. I've seen players like him that have great success. He reminds me of several players that have played that position. They're hard to find. The special ones are hard to find.

"And I think the guy can be special. I think that's why.

"And to follow up with your question, the draft is not only just trying to fill needs. I really don't go into the draft trying to fill this need, then this need and this need. I go into the draft building the board as equal as I can. I put the players up there that are the best football players and then marry needs into the best football players. I understand everybody thinks we have a tackle need. And I would say that's something we need to address whether it's a must or a need. But that player jumped out at me and I felt like I had to go get that player."

Mando: What are you going to do at tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see. The tackle position is an important position. It's an important position. But I feel like we have some flexibility. There are some options out there. I have some things up my sleeve that might work out. We're going to have to fill the need probably with a veteran guy on the street at some point."

Mando: At left tackle?

Jeff Ireland: "We'll see."

Mando: Why not do the trade with Kansas City for Branden Albert instead of drafting cornerback Jamar Taylor in the second round?

Jeff Ireland: "Because I didn't think it was the right thing for us."

Mando: Why?

Jeff Ireland: "Well, I'm not going into that because I'm not so sure it doesn't work it."

Mando: You mean down the road?

Jeff Ireland: "Yeah. Again, I never say never. I don't want to get into the details of that trade right now when it could or couldn't happen done down the road."

Mando: The moment during this draft you said, 'Dang it, I wish I hadn't done that?' Was it when you traded out of the 82nd pick and then had to trade back in?

Jeff Ireland: "You know, that was not a moment that I said, 'Ahh, crap.' I traded out and got the extra fours. And then there was a run. You have a certain number of players on the board and when you trade out you figure someone is going to be there. You have three or four and you think someone's going to be there. And then all of a sudden, five or six picks, boom, boom, boom, boom, guys went off. And it wasn't only in that round but there were rounds where players on our board were getting picked off like crazy. I felt like I needed to go back in there and get a player we really wanted versus settling on a player."

====================================================

This is REALLY Jason Collins using an alias. He's mad at the Dolphins because of Mike Wallace.

Wallace wasn't hating on anyone, he just said he don't understand people like you.......Big Deal!
***********************************************
***********************************************

DISCLAIMER: Like Wallace, I don't have anything against Homosexuals. To each their own.

But I have a big problem with **THIS** FeeAggTard coming on MY DOLPHINS BLOG and posting his Anti-Miami, limp wristed Drivel!
*********************
*********************

To the point, Ireland traded down and picked up MUCHO 4th round picks. Trading back up for Will Davis was unplanned for, FINE. But the move STILL netted us extra picks and got us the Guy WE WANTED.

And you're going to try and play the "Rated" card?

That shows your ignorance. Rated by whom? How good are THEY? How good have they been for the past 5 years?

Yeah, that's what I though. These guys can't even accurately "Rate" high first round picks, let alone 3rd, 4th or 5th rounders.

Probably the same guys that rated Brady as an UDFA-LOL.

Ireland put a value/ranking on Davis, stuck too it and went up and got the Kid when he had to. Kudo's Mr. Ireland.

Will Davis is a Playmaker. His status in the draft slimped **ONLY BECAUSE OF** his relative inexperience at the CB position. You watch and see when Davis becomes one the most pleasant surprises of the entire draft.

**My Rating**......Davis is a Playmaking STEAL!!!!

Yeah your right Glenn is dropping turds left and right haha he must be under that MKultra monarch mind control...or too much Monsanto and flouride in his diet. "This team is just like the 2011 with team less talent" BAHAHAHAHA funniest thing i ever heard this week. Tanny is 10 times better than Henne so that makes our team twice as good right off the bat, and his wife is smoking hot so that improves the aesthetics of the stadium alone. But lets break it down for you bud....New QB, New HC, New OC, New DC, New Coaching Staff in general, New offensive scheme, New Defensive scheme, All of our Draft picks from that year and prior years are better now that they have more Experience in the League, New Lbs(Misi was a rookie in 2011), New CBs, Our Safetys(Clemons,Jones)had there best years ever in 2012, D-Line about the same with D.Jordan/O.Vernon/V.Martin added, New O-Line only starters from that year are Pouncey(as a rookie) and Incognito, New TEs, New Wrs (olny Hartline remains and is coming off his best season ever! a season in which he missed the 1st few games due to injury imagine what he can do with a full training camp with Tanny), New RBs (Lamar Miller actually had a better Avg per rush than Bush last year, D.Thomas was hurt almost all of 2011 & we added Gillislee), New FBs, New Kicker, New KR/PR (Marcus Thigpen was a beast last year awesome find by Ireland)....NO SPARANO PIZZA MAKER HEAD COACH......WE ACTUALLY WANT THROW THE BALL NOW IF YA DIDN'T NOTICE...Maybe talent wise you can make some comparisons of this team to the 2011 team but there is no way this is anything like that team internally, or from a scheme or coaching point of view, and the personal on the field is way different out of 22 starters only 9-10 guys(Clemons,Jones,Wake,Starks,Misi,Solial,Incognito,Pouncey,Hartline & maybe Odrick) from the 2011 will start for us and 6-7 of those guys are on Defense which was the strength of our team in 2011. That team was dead in the water before the season started also...Fans were calling for blood that year, Parcells had just left & our QB looked like a Bust(Henne)so we were looking at M.Moore and K.Orton before the season started. Philbin>Tannehill>Ireland>Sherman are the main reasons why this team is going to make a splash(pun definately intended)in 2013! Now Glenn you'll probably never read this HAHA but you're either a troll or a fool or maybe extremely ignorant choice is yours bud, and if you do read this then your definatley a troll...i just post stuff and move on with my life i never check to see if someone has replyed to me like you apparently do...this ain't YT ya know!

YG, u be loyal fan and all... But dang it man!!

Either u have no life or you are obsessed with posting.

Even oscar knows when to shut up.

And poor Loco, he been posting the same excact comment for years now.

We all know Odin is the biggest troll but don't change names, but he legally handi capped. So we let him slide.

Dashi think he Birdman or something. Referring to yourself in 3rd person is psychotic.

Will Davis, CB, Utah State (Gets involved at tons of pass break-ups and still comes up and tackles well)
Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State (Blocking ability plus decent hands)
Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida (Get rid of sluggo Thomas)
Caleb Sturgis, K, Florida (Save money, get younger)

In a perfect world right...

Cheers,

=================================================

Rob,

The only knock on Davis is his inexperience at CB. That doesn't bother me at all. He came in raw and broke IMPORTANT NCAA records.

He just turned 23 and hasn't been screwed up by bad coaching. Now he'll get to work with Coyle and his crew and we all know that they're EARNING a good reputation for developing Defensive Backs.

Working behind Keller, Dion Sims will be able to contribute right away. He's the classic prototypical TE with some uncanny Seam Stretching abilities. Everybody talks about how much his blocking improved, but the real story is how he's able to get open and the Great Hands.

I don't know about Gillislee, but everything I've read suggests he's good all around and will be NFL ready pretty quickly.

Sturgis was a curve ball for me. I know Carpenter struggled at the most inopportune times, but I really wasn't expecting us to take him in the 5th.

Pretty good write up at the Bleacher Report:

"I predict that a few significant cuts will be made due to this draft. The first is Dan Carpenter, who will save the Dolphins roughly $2.5 million. Caleb Sturgis is an upgrade over him already and you don't draft a kicker in the fifth round just for the heck of it."

Wow! Look out Dan Carpenter!

I read mike Wallace's tweet today. Really shows what kind of person he is. He's an insensitive spoiled rich kid. I was very excited we signed him, but now I can't root for the guy. Learn to accept all people and their differences. It won't be good for us as a team, but I hope he breaks his legs. 13$mil a year. He's gotta look hard for his homies though, so I can't blame him too much. Haha. He's a joke. Lets see how manly he looks when he's afraid to go over the middle. Someone please light "da kid " up

Pick up Tebow he's better then TanneBust.

Some idiot called all the radio shows this morning stating Caleb was a dumb pick because we could have gotten him in FA.

But that statement doesn't make sense if he is better than Carpenter. Now I have heard he don't have history of kicking long field goals.

I also heard Collins will lead gay pride parade and he's single.

Uh oh Odin. U have a shot. U better holla!!

The Bleacher Report:

Update 1:35 PM: Bryant McKinnie is visiting Miami.
==================================================

I believe it was Armando who Tweeted earlier today that Miami has no interest in talking to McKinnie.

Something about, If it was 2003 and South Beach didn't exist.

I guess Mando should have asked about McKinnie while he was in the Bathroom at the Airport!

Provided that he was in shape, I would prefer McKinnie over any of the other names being thrown around.

A couple of caveats. A 1 or 2 year deal at most. Put some conditioning tests/weight clauses in his contract.

Then let Jim Turner give him some extra love and attention!

SIGN MCKINNIE AND CALL IT A DAY!

Jonathon Martin has told his former Coach at Stanford(as well as others)that he's been working hard and has his mind set on being the LT. Sign McKinnie already and let the battle begin!

Well Wicky, sux for you. You must be a jets fan. Mike Wallace not scared to go across the middle. You obviously don't watch tape.

Mike Wallace will average a TD a game.

Silly people actually think EVERYONE on the planet support homosexuality.
Grow up!!

TRANSLATION: I'm Gay and Extremely Offended because Wallace doesn't understand how much a Fat Saggy, Hairy Man's ass turns me on.
----------------------

All Wallace said is that he doesn't "Understand It".

But here you are wishing the Man physical harm.

You are what you accuse HIM of being and WORSE!

I hope you don't represent the average Gay Man in todays society, because it is YOU that's being insensitive and unwilling to accept people and their differences.

Wallace said what a lot of Straight Men were thinking and he said it in an un-offensive way. He then even CLARIFIED that he meant no Hate and explained Himself.

Yet here you are, wishing him harm, PHYSICAL harm no less, to the point of threatening the Man's Livelihood.

You Sir, are an embarrassment to Your Kind and a hypocrite to boot.

Yesterday in total jerk mode tonight. And his kiddie poorn fan club looks up to this guy? Dang this world is full of lost souls.

We just had a draft! I think we just turned a corner(LOOK OUT MONKEY BOY! He "Hangs" on that Corner all the time).

Lets at least trash the jets for drafting a terrible QB and the releasing the best one they had on their roster.

I'd take Chad Henne over Gino Smith.....FOR REAL!

Uncle Remus,

Hon' is it you hon"? Hon' is it you?

Ok, so I busted you and proved to the whole Blog that you're Mando's Little Boy Toy on the side. You like it stuck in your Head and he likes to accomadate you.

Since you're broke with a meth addiction, you'll do just about ANYTHING for some "Bump" Money.(inc. running up the Blog Hit Totals on your Boyfriends Blog)" Big Deal, it's 2013! Just ask Jason Collins. Get over it and get over yourself already. Unless you're ashamed......In which case......you should seriously consider some lifestyle changes.

Anywhoo......we all got "Your Number" and were trying to figure out how to do an INTERVENTION for you here on the Blog.

Sucking Pipe for Money and benefits is one thing, but sucking the Devils Dik(Meth Pipe)is altogether another. Your 24/7 presence proves you have no life and the content of your posts proves you're in a downward spiral.

I exposed you, but it's just because we all care. Remember, acceptance is the First Step in your recovery.

Get Help!

Until then.......You want to talk Dolphin Football? The Draft? The New Players(as long as we're NOT talking which ones are HOT and which are NOT)....?

Having seen the highlight reel on Davis, I felt he was afraid to tackle. What do you think? RAP

odinseye @ 11:16.

Nicely laid out post ya scraggly bearded skallywag!

I especially think you are dead on with Davis. This guy will grow into a nice player. Very instictive. He needs to get stronger but most collegians do. Going out on a limb I wouldn't doubt if he gets more PBUs then Taylor with even 1/2 the playtime.

Heck I hope it's the Surtain and Madison show part duex only with higher ceilings please!

Cheers... R.A.G.N.O.R.O.K.!!!!

That's a pretty high ceiling with Surtain. I would GLADLY take that same level of play--he was excellent.

octagon,

I figure as long as we are shooting for the moon...

I would gladly take the Surtain talent tier and run just like you state.

Cheers,

Fun facts from the it's a "small world" dept:

CB Jamar Taylor is the son of a close friend of one my co-workers.

Jamar Taylor's father is a raging Steelers fan. Before the draft, my co-worker friend asked Jamar's Dad "If Jamar was drafted by the San Diego Chargers would he change allegiance?" He answered "Hell NO!" LOL, Tuff crowd.

I sent word to Jamar's Dad "IF" ANY Fins swag comes his way I will rep it no worries. I know he doesn't want to rock Fins gear to Steeler events.

Cheers,

(Chances Rob gets any Fins gear...slim and none)

Cheers all!

Do not take any 5th Rder or less seriously. 80% of the time they don't work out and are quality fodder for Training Camp competition. Remember all those receivers Ireland drafted in the late Rds last year.

Not Everybody can do Anything. My friend sad because her Son didn't pass the MCats. Not everybody can be a Doctor. Exactly the same with NFL or other Professional Sports Players. These People have a skillset that over 95% of the population just don't have. That's just the way it is.

Reading at the Bleacher report and they said Dallas Thomas is already PENCILED in as the starting LEFT TACKLE!

Huh......?

Then I came across this, under Rookies that will start Day 1(paraphrasing):

This situation is also tied to a potential Branden Albert trade. If the Miami Dolphins acquire Albert from the Chiefs, he'll start at left tackle, leaving third-round pick Dallas Thomas to battle Jonathan Martin for the right tackle spot.

Considering how much starting experience Thomas has in the SEC and how much Martin struggled in 2012, the Tennessee product has to be considered the overwhelming favorite in that competition. Since he also has the ability to play guard, expect him to start somewhere as soon as the 2013 campaign gets under way.
================================

I expected Dallas Thomas to provide some immediate depth, but apparently, some people are pretty high on the guy.

Wow! Could Ireland have possibly landed us AT LEAST 5 starters in this years draft?

You know Jordan and Taylor will start Day 1. Will Davis and Dion Sims won't be "Starters" per se, but you might as well believe it. Davis will be the 3rd/nickel Corner and Sims will be there in the two TE sets and even in front of Keller on some run downs.

Technically, it wouldn't be 4, but for all intents and purposes? Add Thomas, if he breaks into the starting Line up also, they'll put a Jeff Ireland statue right out front with Dan Marino!

Yeah.......I said it!!!!

Only Fools think that $ is an equalizer for Individual Imagination.

Look at all these rich Kids from the Silicone Valley. Now they think they can equalize Imagination through Technology. And while they work individually in their projects they fail to realize these will all be different, as they are. This has all been programmed since the Start. We might help them in the Future.

Odin,

I have looked a lot of film on Dallas Thomas since the draft and I'm impressed. He played LT two years ago and did well against big time SEC DE, including Clowney who is projected as the 1st pick next year.

However, I was more impressed with him as a LG. The guy plays very disciplined in his zone, excellent in pass protection and gets to the second level to make blocks.
The biggest thing that stood out was how he maintains his balance while engaging defenders. I rarely saw the guy off his feet! How many times have we heard Philbin preach a need for guys to stay on their feet while blocking?

I would say he is an immediate upgrade at LG and could fill in at LT if need be. I would plug him in at LG and move Cogs to RG.

UDFA Terell Sinkfield WR. Northern Iowa.

Sinkfield caught 76 passes for 1,097 yards and 10 touchdowns in his four-year career at Northern Iowa, but the stats are hardly what impressed scouts about Sinkfield.

If it's long speed you want, Sinkfield has it. He ran a 4.19-second 40-yard dash at Minnesota's Pro Day on March 5.
========

He ran a what.....?

Also, it's worth noting that a shoulder injury kept him from participating in the combine. It's very possible that we got a huge value with him because nobody got a chance to see how he stacked up to his peers in the draft. Personally, I think he is better than Pugh and Long at this point and both of those guys were taken much earlier.

Further proof that Wake needs a bookend Pass Rusher.

He more than doubled EVERYONE........YES........More than DOUBLED everyone in the league with 86 QB pressures.

He does OK in regards to sacks. But DAMN! How many MORE could he get......and how many more could he CAUSE, if he had another Great Pass Rusher playing opposite?

86 QB pressures....? That's got to be a record!

Woodshed,

I haven't watched much of Thomas at all.......yet.

That's going to change pretty quickly-LOL.

The only problem with moving anyone to Right Guard is Lance Louis. I'm from Chicago and I've watched Louis. You guys are going to be pleasantly surprised with how good he Really Is.

I think Louis is better than Cogs(it was hard typing that). But, either way, the **QUALITY** of the Competition is heating up....and that's a GOOD Thang!

PS: McKinnie visited today and took a physical....FWIW.

I like the Jordan pick but I really hope we don't limit him to a traditional 4-3 DE role. If we want to get the most out of him we should have him lining up at OLB some and dropping back in coverage from the DE position as well. The real value with him is his versatility and we need to force QBs to be wary of where he might be on any play.

I'm a fan of Cogs but he is a prototypical LG for a man scheme. He drives people straight off the ball and has to leave his feet to finish too often.
I've also heard good things about Louis so I think it is entirely possible that our Oline will be better than it was when Long was here.

BTW Odin, you check out Volbeat yet?

Woodshed,

I think you made an excellent point.

When you have TONS of interior lineman all vying for jobs, those combine appearances(numbers)are what grabs peoples attention.

I'm hoping you're right and we found a Gem!

BRB.....Debo's growling and I think I hear some coyotes out front. The nuisance laws say they're fair game. I'm going to try and make some fertilizer out of one or two.

I don't know, I was a Rich kid. We tend to be more outspoken than the Others....and settle for nothing but the Best.

My family was dirt poor Oscar.

I ran away from home it was so bad.

The next year, My Dad took a 2000 dollar loan and turned it into a Million Dollar Construction Company.

I wouldn't know what it's like to be a Rich Kid, I left a year too early.

Dooh!

Our Receiving core is Special u douchebag,Wallace can blow tha top off defenses being fastest player in the NFL,Yea I said it,Hartline is coming off Pro Bowl caliber season,Gibson is gr8 route running solid possession receiver,Keller is goin to b a beast in this Offense, our Receivers are strength of our Offense,And teams will go crazy trying to game plan & scheme how to defend us,and we signed several undrafted Receivers watch out for(Chad Bumphis,Terrell Sinkfield,Jasper Collins,Chris,Denton,&Talyor Stockemer)all really good under radar receivers and I kno most of u so called Dolphins fans will say so what all these WR weren't drafted so what's tha big deal, well actually undrafted players are amoung sum sum of the best players in tha league so back off I thought these Dolphins sites & blogs were supposed to b about positive reinforcement & giving Ireland&Dolphins at least sum props for last 2seasons,we are on tha Rise, only getting better & better especially after draft, are u kidding me Dion Jordan was st8 up draft robbery, only giving up 1 of our 2nd round picks was amazed Jax didn't get him,This is best draft Dolphins have had in a while besides last year,Rookies will push Vets and only make our team better & more competitive,so get excited Phination its only going to get more exciting and when we start winning those Uniz will look a lot better,so stay positive and proud real Dolphins fans its on!

Bleacher Report doing some loving on the Dolphin Draft
http://ow.ly/2wwUUM

DRAFT WAS GOOD I HATE WE DID NOT GET ANY GOOD WIDE RECEIVERS OR TE BUT OTHER THAN THAT GREAT JOB. I CAN SEE THE TEAM'S PHILOSOPHY AND THAT IS TO BE STRONG AGAINST THE PASS AND TO CONTROL THE GAME WITH A GOOD DEFENSE. THAT IS A GOOD PLAN IF YOU CAN PUT TEAMS AWAY WITH A GOOD OFFENSE. THAT IS WHERE I QUESTION IRELAND. HE IS STILL TERRIBLE IN EVALUATING WR/TE. NOW THE TEAM HAS TO DEPEND ON DEPTH FROM PRACTICE PLAYERS AND GUYS WHO WASN'T AN IMPACT LAST YEAR. NOW WE MUST HOPE THAT LAMAR MILLER RUSHES FOR 1200 plus YARDS AND T-HILL PASSES FOR 30 TDS. YES IT ALL IS POSSIBLE BUT WE MUST FIND THAT OTHER THREAT. NOW WITH ALL THAT SAID I DO FEEL THAT BARRING INJURIES I SEE 10-6 AND IF WAKE AND JORDAN BECOMES A FEARSOME SACK PACK I SEE 12-4. WINS...JETS,BILLS(4) PATS(1) BUCS(1) CHARGERS(1) BROWNS(1) STEELERS(1) PANTHERS(1). BENGALS, RAVENS VERY POSSIBLE SINCE THEY ARE AT HOME BUT STEELERS AND BUCS ARE NOT GIVEN. SAINTS,FALCONS DON'T KNOW DON'T THINK SO. EITHER WAY DOLPHINS CAN AND WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR!

Nice weblog here! Additionally your site loads up very fast!
What host are you using? Can I get your affiliate link on your

Looking for "guys of the street" and picking guys on no one's radar is going to finally get rid of Ireland.
