Star Lotulelei in the first round makes sense (which is bad)

I know Jeff Ireland loves defensive tackles. A lot.

In two of the past three years the Dolphins have used their franchise tag on, you guessed it, defensive tackles -- Paul Soliai in 2011 and Randy Starks this year.

Only days after tagging Starks with the franchise tag, Ireland made no secret to his personnel people that he still wanted to add another defensive tackle because those guys are good to have and he already knew Tony McDaniel was headed out the door. Ireland also sees the defensive line as a Miami staple and he wants to keep it strong.

Ireland has said in at least two drafts that he's always looking for big bodied nose tackle/defensive tackle types because men built to play the position are hard to find.

One of the Dolphins signings this offseason? Defensive tackle Vaughn Martin, who was inked to a two-year deal.

So we've established Ireland likes to have defensive tackles in the fold.

And that leads me to my concern:

That on April 25, sitting at No. 12 in the first round, Ireland will look at his horizontal draft board and see Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei sitting there and he'll pull the trigger.

Lotulelei is by any measure a solid NFL draft choice at No. 12. Indeed, he might be the highest player on the Dolphins board at that time if the selections go as most of the experts have it mocked so far. For example, Mel Kiper of ESPN and the NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, Charles Davis, Gil Brandt and Charley Casserly all have Lotulelei on the board when Miami picks.

Furthermore, most of those experts have the big man going one pick later to Tampa Bay.

So what we have is the Starman being available and not being a reach around the No. 12 spot where Miami is scheduled to pick.

Then you have the fact the Dolphins like Lotulelei, you have the fact they've met with him privately, you have the fact both Starks and Soliai are in the final years of their deals, and it spells the Dolphins giving serious consideration to Lotulelei. I mean, very, very serious consideration.

And why do you sense tripidation about this on my part?

Three things:

Star Lotulelei doesn't play cornerback. And the Dolphins need to add a starting-caliber cornerback fairly high in this draft because I'm a lot more certain that Tom Brady will be his old self in 2013 while I'm not nearly as certain that Brent Grimes will be.

Star Lotulelei doesn't play offensive tackle. And if the Dolphins want to keep quarterback Ryan Tannehill's head on his shoulders next year, they need to add a starting-caliber offensive tackle in this draft.

Third, Star Lotulelei has a reputation for being very good on plays he didn't take off. In other words, his motor wasn't in gear every play he's on the field. Yes, he's on the field a lot. But I still don't like players that take plays off.

Fourth, and this one is thrown in as an aside because the problem has apparently been resolved, Star Lotulelei had that heart issue during the Indianapolis Combine. And having players with a past history of heart issues (even small and temporary ones) is scary in South Florida where the July and August temperatures are trying even for players with strong hearts.

I guess I'm worried the Dolphins will draft Lotulelei in the first round because he's a value pick and it makes sense addressing a future ... but he doesn't resolve either major need today.

The Dolphins have had no issues addressing future needs this offseason. They replaced Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett. But in the face of needing a starting OT and a starting CB (my opinion) are they going to address DT in the first round?

It's possible. Very possible.

"The funny thing is some of you think Hartline is a starting caliber wr"

JUSTIN CREDIBLE this was your original statement and the one I was debating.

I believe he is a starting caliber receiver on some teams. Depends on the scheme and what other pieces the team has. Every team is not the same, there are many different formulas to win a super bowl. Not every Super Bowl team has 2 pro bowl receivers.

Damn you JUSTIN!!!! You're making me defend Hartline and I don't like the kid! lol (attitude wise)

Phins78 & Mark,
True i exaggerated on the 1000 yard thing.
The $17mil against the cap is next season is according to Mando, look in the archives.
Oh and this is not an exaggeration about Wallace:
2012
Targets: 119 most in his career
Recept: 64 Only 53% was the worst of Wallace's Career
Average: 13.1 yards was also the worst of his career

Yeah YG, I agree. Regardless of how things work out with Solia, Starks or Vaugh Martin. They're all aging fast.

If we want to stay strong on the D-Line we have to plan ahead. And that means reloading right now.

Whether or not we use a 1st rounder this year is debatable. But I wouldn't be "TOTALLY" against it.

Odinseye:

Are you calling me a dummy?

I don't want to jump to conclusions

HAHAHA Come on JUSTIN, he made plenty of big plays. Didn't catch a lot of TDS but can you really blame that solely on him? Tanny missed him a few times and he was the only motherf^%&er on the team catching the ball besides Bess.

But yes, Hartline was the guy making great twisting diving catches to get us in the red zone. The guy catches everything thrown to him, there is a place for him on the team. Maybe they see him growing more than you do. And hopefully he will grow out of being a whiney prick for my sake!

Hahaha, tell me one time he made a play, .... except for an 80yd td .... hahahahahaaa

Isn't is wonderful that so many people simultaneously:
- Are Dolphins fans
- Have nothing else to do
- Are familiar with this site
- And come here

Okay Justin, I can get on board with that a bit. Maybe he is more of a #3 now and the team is hoping he will grow into that true #2 guy with more talent around him and the qb. We'll see.

We need an hispanic contributor for racial balance.

Wallace is a cap hit of #3.2M next year, then 17.2 the year after.... then goes back down to $12...

$17mil is for 2014 season. That impacts the ability to replace the starters that leave after this season.

Hose and Helmet, it's cool man, don't mean to kill you on this here. You are entitled to your opinion but we don't know how it will work out yet. I just take the wait and see approach and get annoyed when people get mad at what MIGHT happen. Lets see how it works out.

You like Philbin right? I do, and I am going to trust his judgement. I have to believe he was totally on board with getting the fastest receiver in the league to stretch the field for the rest of our offense. It's something we haven't had in a VERY LONG TIME. No worries man, but I do hope you are dead wrong.

Are there any hispanics in the house? Any Cubanos? Latinos? Chicanos?
Please share with us so we can all bask in the diversity.

FALSE, I DO have something better to do but sitting at a desk is comfortable right now and I can't get my work done because it's raining! ;)

But yes it's wonderful to be able to discuss our team on a rainy day, not many fans up here for me to talk to.

OK he had over a thousand yards with one Td somebody has to catch the ball.

Please tell me one time he made a play.

Don't include the 80 yard td.

That was a defense break down.

====================================================

I'm not going to debate or defend Hartline at the moment. I basically agree with 78 on Hartline. I think he'll prove to be a very good no. 2/complimentary WR.

Having said that, I do remember at 4 times off the top of my head where Hartline was wide open for the TD and Tannehill missed him and/or just didn't see him.

To be fair to Tannehill, on most of those times that I remember, the protection had started breaking down pretty quickly. It is what it is.

AT LEAST 4 times off the top of my head.

Phins78,
Point taken.
If we make the postseason then having Wallace is priceless regardless of the price.
If we don't then we don't.
No skin off my back.

The Miami Dolphisn have ~ $25M in cap space for 2014 as we speak. That's without making further moves to free up more money or without the cap going up (which it will) and having their QB under contract - which is usually the most expensive player. I think they'll be able to manage fine.

Sir, NO Sir.......Sir!

I was referring to the Hoser and Helmet Guy taking crap and erroneous facts about Wallace.

I saw where it might have looked like I was referring to you, but I wasn't. So I'm glad you asked.......Sir!

For the record, Dusitn Keller requested a one year deal.He and his agent knew he was undervalued in this market due to his injury, and wanted the option to be a free agent after envisioning putting up big numbers with T-hill and the Miami offense.

"$17mil is for 2014 season. That impacts the ability to replace the starters that leave after this season."

If the team keeps him.

SCENARIO #1. Wallace makes the Dolphins offense deadly and the Dolphins have to pay him 17 mil. He's not the highest paid receiver in the league now (not sure where that's coming from) and by then there will be 3 to 5 others making more. So worse case scenario is we keep a pro bowl wr and pay him like he's one of the top 10 in the league. Seems fair to me.

SCENARIO #2 You are right and Wallace isn't worth the money. The Dolphins then trade him in season for more picks or simply release him in the offseason with a little cap hit. They would never have to pay the 17 million or the rest of his contract. Another win for the Dolphins.

This is the way I see it.

Oh and this is not an exaggeration about Wallace:

It might not be an exaggeration, but it's definitely an aberration as his starting QB went down due to injury.

You have to consider all the facts before you run him in the ground, no?

Holy shnikies Odinseye is agreeing with YG! Is something new ? Damn I've been gone for a while.

Phins, looking at the dead money, they are committed to Wallace for 3 seasons in effect. So yeah, they will most likely have to swallow that 17m cap hit unless someone is crazy enough to trade for it after a bad year.

nj finfan4ever, I'm pretty sure that was a rumor but if you have a link please post it.

Here's a story from NFL.COM, there are many more that say the same thing to be found.

"It was thought Keller might pass on the Dolphins' one-year offer. General manager Jeff Ireland has thrown bundles of money at players who haven't proved they can help the Dolphins win, but the Keller deal is cunning on the surface. He was sidetracked for most of last season by hamstring injuries and the short contract now allows Miami to decide if it wants Keller around long term.

He made just five starts last season for the Jets, but Keller was outstanding in 2011, accounting for 65 receptions, 815 yards and five touchdowns. He's a solid fit for the Dolphins' West Coast-style passing attack.

If Keller can be counted on for 16 games, Miami has spun magic here. Keller's blocking could use help, but this is another bold move by a Dolphins team looking to win now."

(Unless this counts......Doh!)

Notice how odin comes to defend bloggers that talk about vile things? You know who I mean. Odin's 'she boy's can spout spit and swallow every day but ne never attacks them. Those are his pet monkey boys.

Double standard, no? How is it he routinely defends the likes of the following:

Don't Worry. Your Mom Is A Swallower!! We Have Nothing To Worry About!

And You Know My Repertoire Is More Than Me Putting It In Your Mouth!! And 1 Of You Spitting, While The Other One Swallows!!

Posted by: Dashi | January 26, 2013 at 01:01 PM

Yes but what is a bad year ya know Mark? I mean Marshall had a bunch of catches but dropped a lot of passes and especially tds, Chicago knew he would fit there perfectly and they traded for him. Maybe the same scenario happens, and this time we didn't give up any picks to begin with. But I am not worried about this and think Wallace and Tannehill may be a perfect match. Tannehill throws an excellent ball on the run just like Big Ben. And even if Tannehills accuracy didn't get better he would now have Wallace to run under the ball, he has that extra gear and we've all seen it. He's going to be fine, and the kid is a good teammate and hard worker according to his coaches and other players who know him.

Can odin explain why it is ok for his chosen pet buddies to talk vile yet everyone else that disagrees with him is a troll?

Odin, Did you "FIRE" up them amps this morning like I told you to?

78,

Ireland was almost ran out of town on a rail. Now he's reached near Hero status.

I always hated Keller. Now I LOVE the Guy.

YG and I agreeing on something.........?

Stranger things have happened.

17 mil is a lot. Pitt offered him slightly less than our overall offer so that says a lot.

Meaning, Pittsburgh, a team who always seems to be in contention was happy to pay him a boatload of money. They know him and wanted him to stay but couldn't afford more. We could, we paid it. Every team structures salaries differently. If you want the best players on the market you have to pay for them. Or you can sit back like Parcells and sign the Wilfords of the world and watch your offense suck. Have to take a chance at some point.

This phins78 slug is just as vile, odin doesn't attack him either because he is one of the few desparate enough to talk to the juvenile old geezer....

I'm out, not sticking around to talk to someone from a mental institution. Good talk with everyone else today, It's too bad this human waste had to ruin the blog but I'm not going to entertain him. Peace

"$17mil is for 2014 season. That impacts the ability to replace the starters that leave after this season."

This is so far from true. Misi and Odrick don't have to be resigned. Lets not even get into Carroll. Starks isn't a must resign in 2014.

Only 2 fa's in 2014 can be considered mustresigns as of today: Reshad Jones, Randy Starks, possibly Dustin Keller. Also, as it now stands, we have all 7 of our 2014 draft picks.

So, Resign Solia, Jones, possibly Keller. Then get at least 2 new starters from the draft. No problems. Also, there's still fat that can be trimmed from even 2013's roster. Unused cap always carries over.

Even if the fat isn't trimmed this season, it can still be trimmed next season(2014). You would be foolish to assume Ireland didn't look ahead before placing 17 million of Wallace's money on the 2014 books.

Odin, when will you realize there are several regular bloggers that make fun of you and expose your constantly annoying juvenile behavior? You'd like to think it's only one, it's many. One day you will realize you are attacking the very people you think are your 'pals'.

Ireland did the same with Dansby and Marshall a couple years ago.
IMHO, Until he drafts better players then he has for the last 4 years the fins will remain 8 and 8.

Check Out How far back "No-Life" goes.......DAMN!

"No-Life" dumpster dives in Armando's Archives(I rhymed it-LOL). He even saves crap to a file on his computer-ROTFLMAO!

Anywhoo Phins78, it's one of two things.

1. No-Life is playing stoopid and posting things out of context.

or

2. No-Life was too ignorant and comprehension-ally challenged to figure out that you were making fun of YOUR OWN negative comments that day.

Don't know about anyone else, but my Money is on: "Ignorant and Comprehension-ally Challenged"!

HoHo!!!!

I SEE THE LOVEBOY "GANG" IS HERE LED BY THE LEADER PHIN78 AN BOBBY 12 AND ODEN CHACING LIKE DOGS AFTER A BONE.

So What?

Who cares?

Unlike you, "No-Life", I have one outside of this Blog.

I come here for Dolphin News and Dolphin Talk.

You on the other hand think this place is some kind of Grand Stage set for you to have your "No-Life" Popularity Contest-ROTFLMFAO!

I could give Two Squats about you and the way you ruin this Blog. I tried in the past, but apparently you polish to good of a Knob(I know you know what I'm talking about too, wink, wink), Armando Loves you.

What can any of us do?

I'm just burning some time, hoping I'll get to see my Brunette before my shift starts tonight. I have a Life, I suggest you **GET ONE**.

OK Odinseye.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

78

I hope you are right.

I agree that he catches everything his way and agree he might have had about 1300 yards if those passes from Tanny were on point.

But I just would love to see him make the dbs miss a tackle and run for another 20 or so yards.

Shift??, What "Shift", Odin I thought you were a "Self-Employed" Person What shift are you waiting for?

Bark,

The last Coaching staff played Dansby out of position and wasted his talents in my honest opinion.

Marshall was a cancer and a Big Risk. If you take a shot here or there, you never get the Big Payoffs. We tried with Marshall and it didn't work. It was a tough break, but at lweast we cut bait and moved on.

Second verse, same as the first.....Try and Try Again. You know all the same Mantra's.

All I can say, it looks real good on Paper. It looks better TO ME, than it did before. So, Like The Useless Homer I am, until proven otherwise, I'm a believer-LOL!

AwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwRiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight MIAMI!!!!

Ok, I'll buy that, But not the KoolAid your drinking.
Anywhoo, I'll do battle with you tommarrow Odin, Till then

You know what........I'm not explaining my Life to you over and over again. Why do you always keep asking the same questions?

I am self employed. I own an Automotive Repair Shop with Towing and Snow Plowing.

I also have contracts with the State and County for Snow removal and Towing.

On top of that, I own the rights to a few songs(one of which gets used constantly on Radio and television commercials) and I receive periodical payments for rebroadcasting. It's not exactly royalties, but it's the same thing-MONEY!

Yes, I have a "Shift" where I have to be "On Call" with the County. I get paid whether I tow or snow plow or not(salaried). If I exceed a certain amount of mileage and/or tows/snow removal, I'm paid extra and am reimbursed for Gas/Oil and wear and tear(percentages).

In addition to all that, My Attorney, My Friend/Partner and Myself have been trying to figure out the financing, zoning and licensing laws for possibly opening up a Gentlemen's Club in this area(there aren't any for Miles and Miles).

This last endeavor is admittedly a Pipe Dream. But it's something we have been (Kind Of)working on. We're still at the planning stage(we have been for two years). But if we can get the financing, we think we can make it work Big Time.

Now, as you've proven over and over again, you have no life. Chew on that for awhile and see what you can't use to stalk me with here at "No-Life's Dolphin's In Depth".

BTW.......THANKS, I don't like to Brag, but I am Very Proud of what I've been able to accomplish. You gave the perfect opportunity to Blow My Own Horn. If you knew where I was at, at one point in my life, and you see where I'm at now, you'd be amazed!

Well.......Debo has that Look In His Eye!

My Kids are wanting some Dinner.

ALoco, they said no to Pizza or Taco/Burrito night from the Local Dive Bar(I think they want me to cook-Unnnnnngh).

Any suggestions........?

Odin where's Dashi?

Do you have jutias where you are, odin? It's a big rodent, the size of a small dog, very tasty. Otherwise, I suggest rabbit.

Personally, I believe by having this significant wideout improvement will mean guys are open, Tanny's not holding the ball, which makes it LESS imperative to have 330#'s of fat left tackle there.
Alabama's great center/O-Lineman is projected in the 2nd round. He can play all positions, and would probably be a 1st rounder if not for the other 'Tide guys.

I sincerely hope we get a pass rushing DE, or if Eifort's the real deal, move up and get him. We can then release Clay and Egnew.

If we're not getting Milliner, and the FSU corner guy is not the type our D needs, as has been said, get the corner in the 2nd round with our other 2nd round pick.

TOOO FUNNY IS YG4L/DB/YG/LOL.
