Star Lotulelei in the first round makes sense (which is bad)

I know Jeff Ireland loves defensive tackles. A lot.

In two of the past three years the Dolphins have used their franchise tag on, you guessed it, defensive tackles -- Paul Soliai in 2011 and Randy Starks this year.

Only days after tagging Starks with the franchise tag, Ireland made no secret to his personnel people that he still wanted to add another defensive tackle because those guys are good to have and he already knew Tony McDaniel was headed out the door. Ireland also sees the defensive line as a Miami staple and he wants to keep it strong.

Ireland has said in at least two drafts that he's always looking for big bodied nose tackle/defensive tackle types because men built to play the position are hard to find.

One of the Dolphins signings this offseason? Defensive tackle Vaughn Martin, who was inked to a two-year deal.

So we've established Ireland likes to have defensive tackles in the fold.

And that leads me to my concern:

That on April 25, sitting at No. 12 in the first round, Ireland will look at his horizontal draft board and see Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei sitting there and he'll pull the trigger.

Lotulelei is by any measure a solid NFL draft choice at No. 12. Indeed, he might be the highest player on the Dolphins board at that time if the selections go as most of the experts have it mocked so far. For example, Mel Kiper of ESPN and the NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, Charles Davis, Gil Brandt and Charley Casserly all have Lotulelei on the board when Miami picks.

Furthermore, most of those experts have the big man going one pick later to Tampa Bay.

So what we have is the Starman being available and not being a reach around the No. 12 spot where Miami is scheduled to pick.

Then you have the fact the Dolphins like Lotulelei, you have the fact they've met with him privately, you have the fact both Starks and Soliai are in the final years of their deals, and it spells the Dolphins giving serious consideration to Lotulelei. I mean, very, very serious consideration.

And why do you sense tripidation about this on my part?

Three things:

Star Lotulelei doesn't play cornerback. And the Dolphins need to add a starting-caliber cornerback fairly high in this draft because I'm a lot more certain that Tom Brady will be his old self in 2013 while I'm not nearly as certain that Brent Grimes will be.

Star Lotulelei doesn't play offensive tackle. And if the Dolphins want to keep quarterback Ryan Tannehill's head on his shoulders next year, they need to add a starting-caliber offensive tackle in this draft.

Third, Star Lotulelei has a reputation for being very good on plays he didn't take off. In other words, his motor wasn't in gear every play he's on the field. Yes, he's on the field a lot. But I still don't like players that take plays off.

Fourth, and this one is thrown in as an aside because the problem has apparently been resolved, Star Lotulelei had that heart issue during the Indianapolis Combine. And having players with a past history of heart issues (even small and temporary ones) is scary in South Florida where the July and August temperatures are trying even for players with strong hearts.

I guess I'm worried the Dolphins will draft Lotulelei in the first round because he's a value pick and it makes sense addressing a future ... but he doesn't resolve either major need today.

The Dolphins have had no issues addressing future needs this offseason. They replaced Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett. But in the face of needing a starting OT and a starting CB (my opinion) are they going to address DT in the first round?

It's possible. Very possible.

Do you have jutias where you are, odin? It's a big rodent, the size of a small dog, very tasty. Otherwise, I suggest rabbit.

====================================================

I've had lots of Rabbit. Especially when I was younger with my Grand Father. He lived right on the Mississippi and I spent my summers like Huck Finn. He'd cook up anything and everything. Rabbit, squirrels, Coons too, I think. I don't remember if we ate them or what, but we'd go "Shinning" with the Dogs and Miners helmets in the middle of the night. And the Goat! Oh yeah, BBQ'ed over and Earthen Pit! Authentic Viking Style for Real!

A couple of my Favorites though, were the Mississippi Catfish and the **TURTLES**. OMG - The Old Guy could cook up some Turtle(mostly a Stew). The best thing he made though, was straight up Deep Fried Rattle Snake! You haven't LIVED until you've had some of Grand Pa's Deep Fried Rattle Snake!

Oh man, I guess I went off on a tangent. Anywhoo Oscar, I don't believe we have "jutias" up here.

We do, However have Weasels Oscar. Matter of fact, while waiting for the Bus with the kids this morning, we saw a good sized Weasel sitting on one of the Snowmobiles with a Mouse in his Mouth!

I ain't going to let him drive the snowmobiles, but I will let him hang around and keep the mice and rodent(kitty kat)populations down.

BTW......are Weasels Good Eatin..........?

Hmmmmmmmmmm..............

Valhalla!!!!

Yes, I have a "Shift" where I have to be "On Call" with the County. I get paid whether I tow or snow plow or not(salaried). If I exceed a certain amount of mileage and/or tows/snow removal, I'm paid extra and am reimbursed for Gas/Oil and wear and tear(percentages).

LMFAO!!!!

Yeah, that is the profile of a man every HOTTIE seeks!

You know in the old days, hot women sought well to do gentlemen, the very rich, or the young buffed boy toy. Not anymore...they seek out aging, on call, tow truck drivers that get paid extra for wear and tear!!!!

Hahhahahahaahaha... No..check that..

Bwaaaaaahaaaaaaa Hahaaaaaaaaahaaaaa!

Omar Kelly now has the fins taking Tyler Eiert with their first pick. That would be another weapon for Tannehill and I like him but wow a TE at 12? That is much higher than anyone has him projected. I would think that they can trade down pick up another pick and still take him later in the first.

Odin,

Really, time to fess up. Don't be the last person on Earth to realize you don't have any hotties. Scaggy's maybe.

I remember just a month ago you said your hottie just arrived, JUST ARRIVED, and you were still blogging for another 3 hours LMFAO....

Orlando why in the world would you give an ounce of value to what dumb fuh omar says? The guy is an ignorant drip loser with an IQ of 3. You might as well quote your granny.

Omar Kelley? LOL

This is the year Irescum's age passes his IQ.

LOL, poor Omar. I just look at every mock out there. You would think with all the years covering the fins that Omar would have some insight but yea Omar does not get a lot right. In fact, he reported some bad information in FA. We'll see if Omar is right on this one.

Ody, not even DaAnalSupahHommoIncognito believes in your fictitious HOTTIES!

Odin you are one crazy dude. I mean that in a good way.

Thanks Rebollo, I try. Monkey Boy makes it DAMN easy-LOL.

He always goes back and Dumpster Dives in Armando's Archives like something someone posted a year and a half ago matters to anyone NOW(and YES, we've ALL seen him repost stuff that's sometimes 1 and 2 years old).

Anywhoo......I wonder why he never reposts stuff like the post above @ 10:58.

It's times like this that crawls back into Mommy's Basement and hopes Armando put up a new blog before anyone sees it.

ROTFLMAO..................

I'm sure he does odin. I'm sure he does lol.

It is truly a marvel how time and again the troll with so few words can provoke odin into an endless rambling defensive fury of bs.

Fvcking Pathetic. Armando tolerates this idiot and has done so for the last 5 years. It very well could have been longer for all I know.

Lets see, he does rack up a lot of Blog Hits, but this place always does, with or without Troll Boy.

One can only IMAGINE why Armando tolerates this "Knob Polisher".

Anywhoo, this is pathetically hilarious. Kris got his answer, sandwhiched right inbetween his posts. Plain......."Old Fashioned Retard" INDEED-LMAO!

No kidding. This is what the "Perfect Blog" would look like to "No-Life Boy".

The guy has no insight, no football knowledge or understanding. His posts makes it clear that he's quite ignorant and definitely NOT a Fan of the Miami Dolphins.

Why on Earth does he choose to ruin a Football Blog? Why does he pretend to be a Football Fan at all?

Oh yeah......I almost forgot.......he's posted it Many, MANY times in the past.

It's the tight white pants and the Tight Ends particularly.

Oh Broder......

Notice how all of odin's responses are immature rants that always make some reference to queerdom. Always.

I think it would be a great pick for Miami. You can't argue with the value that he would provide at 12. If he is the pick I think it would give Ireland the depth at DT to seek a trade for Soliai. Soliai is a 3-4 NT & Coyle is going to continue to transition to a 4-3 base D. Soliai doesn't have near the value in a 4-3 base. Given that Soliai is on a reasonable contract for 1 year I think Miami could get a 2nd round pick out of him. San Francisco comes to mind as they lost a few DL & Glenn Dorsey isn't a NT. but I would think that teams like Pitt, SD, Indy (although they don't have a 2nd rounder), Dallas, Arizona, or Denver would all be interested if he were made available.

Your future at DT would be Odrick & Star. That is a solid foundation for the DL. Lets not kid ourselves about Odrick either. He is a DT, period. There should be more concern about finding a true DE to play opposite Wake because Miami doesn't have that guy right now.

Willy, Soliai isn't going anywhere, he is a beast and can play on any dline. You will never build a team trading away your best players in their prime.

Touched a nerve now, have we?

ALoco,

You asking someone too post only about football?

Ha, how retarded is that? Be truthful now ALoco, you know you NEVER post about Football.

How you gonna ask somebody to do that, when YOU never do? Can you think of a word that starts with Hippo and rhymes with Shyt?

When you figure it out, take a look in the mirror and SMILE!

Now Shaddap with the Dumb stuff Doofus ;)

I'm hoping to get a few players that I believe that would help the Dolphins in key situations.

I'm OK with
Patterson or Austin
This pick would move Hartline or leave him as our number 2 upgrading our wr core all together.

Second round getting Long to upgrade our line.

Then Truant to add to our cbs

odin,

PLEASE TALK ONLY FOOTBALL........FOR THE SAKE OF MY BRAIN

=============================================

Like my posts can reverse all the damage that those Dongs to the Head have caused.

Man, you are some kind of Dick Brain-LOL!

I might get Truant first.

The reason I would take a wide out first is because Patterson and Allen is better than any wr in free agency as a number 2.

And Austin has that big play ability to be a match up problem for any lb safety or third string cb.

Albert is better than all ots coming out.

Or that guy that just got released from Atlanta. If he wasn't picked up yet.

Keller is better than every te. Plus he has something to prove. I think he gets resigned.

Dt is a possibility.

Star looks great and he could learn alot behind two pro bowlers.

But just thinking about the future and present I think the best option is write with the 1st pick.

Tammy needs weapons so why not a pick thats better than any free agent in that group?

Trufant would be a reach in my opinion. Doesn't mean we don't pull the trigger. Just make sure their isn't better talent that's missed because of it.

The tow DT Richardson or Louteleilei would be good. Only if their going into the rotation right away. Otherwise use the first pick on a player that contributes right away.

Don't know who keeping score but odin is beating you like a step child. Just quit while you have a chance. Go away loser. lol.

Meant to say wr with the first pick.

Oh and Tanny.

This cell blogging is sometimes difficult. And sometimes good.

Ireland to stupid to draft Patterson or Allen with the 1st pick.

With either two, our offense would be one of the best in the league.

Im looking at film....Safeties all the way back, Mike Wallace still blowing by them.

The receivers we have now all bring something different to the table, which is good.

HOUSTON TEXANS ONLY DRAFTED 1 O LINE MAN WITH A HIGH PICK THE LAST 10 YEARS.

DOLPHINS #2 IN LEAGUE WHEN DRAFTING O LINEMAN EARLY AND STILL NEVER MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

I'd be okay with either of the top two guards. One of them will probably be there. If Star is there, you have to consider it as that is an important position that we will need next year and not likely to get the opportunity to draft anyone nearly as good as he is. Can they work out a trade for Starks if they do draft Star and get a number 2 for him for next year? The other option would be to trade back and maybe still get one of the top two guards, one of the top 2 WR, or Eifert. I just hope they don't reach for a OT or CB cause of need and overdraft.

Post of the Millennium.

The Hotties just LOVE Cyber Stalkers. Especially the ones that have "Dicky Doo's". THATS WHEN YOUR BELLY STICK OUT FARTHER THAN YOUR DICKY DOO-ROTFLMAO!

PRICELESS LOL.

Thanks Boycott.

But why do I get the feeling you were making fun of your retarded twin brother?

Just Kidding.

Seriously now, I was just reading and re-reading Dolphins related articles and I came across this recent one:

Armando Salguero: Draft-day jockeying — up or down — hasn’t helped Miami Dolphins much
=================================

In the article Armando put a negative emphasis on most of these kinds of trades. And being honest I can't blame him. Some of it was/is atrocious. Specifically, one of my favs(ahem)was the way Jimmy Johnson blundered away the 19th pick of the draft in 1998.

He traded down, got an O-line and Linebacker that were BOTH cut in Training Camp! Huh? What?

To make matters worse, when asked, Johnson claimed to have passed on Randy Moss on purpose! To make matters even "Worser than Worse(ahem)", Johnson drafted WR Larry Shannon in the 3rd round and proclaimed that Shannon would be as good as Moss. You guys remember Larry Shannon......RIGHT?

Yeah.......Thanks Jimmy!

Anywhoo.......My point is that Armando made the entire article sound like total doom and gloom. That's OK, it was his opinion. Apparently he believes that Draft Day trades up or down are useless. OK, Fine!

But then Armando goes a little Too Far **IN MY OPINION**. He finishes off this negative anti-draft day trade article with:

The results don’t come close to suggesting draft-day trades have been a huge benefit for Miami. So why is there so much buzz about them, again?
=====================================

To me this sounds like defeatists attitudes. I mean just because guys like Johnson, Wannstaedt(Spielman(?)and Parcells screwed us for years to come, that doesn't mean we should just give up. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't get excited and pull some Brain Muscles trying to workout our Armchair GM fantasies'. It doesn't mean we shouldn't root for OUR GM to pull off that Big Time Blockbuster Trade that finally gets us over the proverbial Hump and back into the PLAYOFFS! That's the BUZZ I'm talking about Armando.

Mainly, we have a New Staff with an apparently improving GM and I'm starting to have some real confidence in what they've been doing as of late. And believe me, it's been a Long-LONG time since I've had any confidence in anything the Miami Dolphins have been trying to do. I don't care what anybody DID in the past. I'm all in with the "FO" we have and I'm all for the old: If at FIRST you don't succeed, Try, TRY AGAIN! That's the BUZZ I'm talking about Armando!

Mostly, I don't care if Ireland wants to trade up, down, sideways or simply just stays put. I'm excited about the ammo we have, the latitudes we have and mostly, I'm just excited about The Draft!

That's the BUZZ I'm talking about Armando!

One time, means nothing. Twice in one month, indicates some kind of interest. The fact that Vaccaro has been to Dolphins HQs twice makes me think he is being considered as a potential draftee of the Miami Dolphins. A Safety at #12? Sure. If not, a bit farther down.

Again. We have the ammunition to come up with 2(TWO) First Rd picks this Year.

Now, don't bring in the argument that in this Draft the best Players are in the 2nd Rd. That's absolute Bullcrap and goes against any logic, in ANY draft.

HOW ABOUT THE IDEA OF MIA FINS TIGHT END/H-BACK/FULLBACK, #42 CHARLES CLAY, GO BACK TO HIS FULLBACK POSITION FULL TIME? & HOW ABOUT THE MIA FINS FULLBACK, #41 JORVORSKIE LANE, LOSE WEIGHT TO CONVERT TO PLAY AN H-BACK/RUNNING BACK ROLE ON SHORT YARDAGE AND GOAL LINE SITUATIONS?

#41 JORVORSKIE LANE HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO PLAY THE H-BACK/RUNNING BACK ROLE. NICKNAMED THE "J-TRAIN" AT TEXAS A&M UNIV, HE PLAYED RUNNING BACK IN HIS FIRST THREE SEASONS BEFORE CONVERTING TO FULLBACK HIS SENIOR SEASON IN COLLEGE UNDER THE MIA FINS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE SHERMAN. HE CAN PLAY THE ROLE THAT FMR FINS FULLBACK LOUSAKA POLITE USED TO PLAY.

He needs to hold onto the ball. Otherwise he won't be here, at all.

IF MIA DOLPHIN TE #84 MICHAEL EGNEW HAVE A BETTER YEAR THAN LAST YEAR BY BEING EFFECTIVE IN THE PASSING GAME, DRAFTING NOTRE DAME TIGHT END TYLER EIFERT, ALONG WITH FREE AGENT TE DUSTIN KELLER WOULD BE A TREMENDOUS COMBINATION AS FAR AS CREATING MISMATCHES. I DO REMEMBER HEARING OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE SHERMAN MENTIONING THAT HE WOULD PUT THREE TIGHT ENDS ON THE FIELD AT THE SAME TIME IN DIFFERENT ROLES. MIKE EGNEW IS A FMR COLLEGIATE WR AT THE UNIV OF MISSOURI. HE CONVERTED TO THE TIGHT END POSITION FOR HIS SENIOR SEASON IN COLLEGE.

It's not that easy. Lousaka was gifted in reading the right hole, up and down, deciding in a split second and squirming thru it. Just not a good pass-catcher.

And also fthert was rt vernal Rogers from the drafts in 20111 he was good see d before

LOUSAKA POLITE WAS A FMR RUNNING BACK AS WELL IN COLLEGE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH. HE CONVERTED TO FULLBACK IN THE NFL. I'M PRETTY SURE THAT JORVORSKIE LANE CAN HANDLE THAT ROLE. THAT'S ALL HE WANTS TO DO IS BANG STRAIGHT AHEAD.

So much info to process.....

I dont want to trade up and burn high picks even though I know the tackle position needs help. I hope the Dolphins trade down and accrue more picks. This draft is stacked in the second and third round. If they stay put, Im thinking its got to be Eifert, Vaccaro, Richardson, Lotulelei, Cooper, Trufant. I dont think Johnson will be there at 12. I really dont think Austin is being considered at 12 and think that Patterson might have more upside than Austin but he too is not being considered. Omar reported its going to be Eifert or Austin, and I think that has been placed with the media to drum up interest for a team to trade up with the Dolphins for Austin which is fine with me. Of the 6 guys I mentioned above, Trufant is a big reach. OG and NT would not be popular picks with the fan base even though they are 3 excellent players I listed. I think it comes down to Eifert or Vaccaro. I think the fan base would be more excited with Eifert.

Personally, any of the 6 mentioned above I would be very happy with.

Wow, odin has been feeding the trolls non stop for 5 years now. He is obsessed with them, and they have his number.

Just like at the park, when keep feeding the pigeons, they keep coming.

So, I have been really struggling with who the Fins should take number one and how to manage the draft overall. I see that there are so many different options (especially with 11 overall picks this year), which makes Ireland's job tough.

I see the logic behind taking Star or Cooper or Warmack and beefing up the OLINE. I'd be fine with it but I really still would not be thrilled.

I was listening to NFL radio last night. Pollian was recorded saying that you should always use your First Round Pick to draft someone who scores touchdowns, sacks the QB or creates interceptions. Several of the commentators were high on that strategy. I tend to agree.

The Fins have picked enough first round lineman the past few years (Long, Odrick, Pouncey). I think they should go CB, TE or DE with their first round pick to get a playmaker that really stands out and puts points on the board or creates turnovers. With 2 picks in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd they should be able to land quality Guards and DT's if they really want to add depth and competition at those positions.

Star might be a good value at #12, but not for this team. Ireland would have to be an idiot to draft him there with the team needs. No corner but Milliner gets consideration either. No scheme fit......no pick. Unless the top two tackles fall, don't expect the lineman pattern to continue either. Don Shula would tell you he made his biggest mistake trying to draft a defense to help Marino instead of giving him a full compliment of new weapons. When your offense is great, an average defense will do (ask the Pats). While I personally think Vaccaro would be a great pick at #12, the best 1st round talent for this team (regardless of you naysayers) is Eifert. There are no guarantees with Keller; if he stays beyond one year or avoids injury. This offense needs Eifert and Ireland knows it. Smile and wave boys. Eifert will be the pick, and the Dolphins offense will be The Greatest Show on Surf!

TRADE WITH THE TWELFTH PICK TO ANY TEAM ABOVE THE NEW YORK GIANTS. THE GIANTS HAVE NOT HAD AN ATHLETIC TIGHT END SINCE JEREMY SHOCKEY. DRAFTING NOTRE DAME TIGHT END TYLER EIFERT IS THE MOST INTRIGUING PICK THAT THE DOLPHINS CAN MAKE.
1ST ROUND: ND TE TYLER EIFERT
2ND ROUND: TX A&M DE DAMONTRE MOORE
2ND ROUND: FIU S JONATHAN CYPRIEN
3RD ROUND: TX A&M WR RYAN SWOPE
3RD ROUND: NCST CB DAVID AMERSON
3RD ROUND (COMPENSATION PICK): OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Vacarro at #12?

If No Tackle is available.

I understand These Guards are Good. But still a #12 for a OG.

I could See Ireland Using All His Top Picks.

As Long As He Can Bring Guys In To Compete Right Away.

1-FS
2-OT
2-CB
3-OG
3-OLB
4-RB
5-OG
5-CB
7-TE
7-K
7-LB

The Compensation Picks Have Been Handed Out.

This Year FA's Are Next Years Compensation. And The Fins Spent On FA's the Compensation Will Be Low.1 or 2 Extra Picks. Probably 1-4th rounder.

I really like the draft of MIADOLFAN207..got to figure out a way to make that a reality.

The photos of the guys working out in the first day of conditioning drills are awesome. The expectations and goals of the team need to go up substantially. This season it's all about making a run and being competitive with the Pats. The Phins are tied for the 8th toughest schedule next year.
