Reason Eric Winston is available: Money, certainty

So what do you think Eric Winston is worth?

It's a pertinent question because, if you remember days ago I reported the Dolphins interest in the free agent offensive tackle had waned. And the only way that interest would be renewed is if Winston dropped his asking price.

Well, since then Winston has visited with the Dallas Cowboys and continued to consider a standing offer from the San Diego Chargers. And he's still unsigned.

Why?

Because he wants more money than his market is willing to offer and, I'm told by a source with knowledge of his thinking, he'd like a multi-year deal that would guarantee he's not going to merely be a one-season rental.

So what does Winston think is a fair price for his services?

“In the $3-4 million range is something that I think is more than fair for a starter who has played pretty well throughout his career,” Winston said on Sirius NFL radio.

Actually, when you consider that demand, it doesn't seem exceedingly steep until you recognize what else is involved. Because Winston is working on being with his third different team in three years, he has concerns he's simply becoming a mercenary.

So he would like some sort of certainty (as much as the NFL offers, anyway) that will keep him with his next team for a few years. That usually means a big enough signing bonus that makes cutting him after one year more difficult.

Obviously no NFL team is there right now.

Most are now focused on the draft and picking a right tackle that will be younger and more promising than Winston -- albeit with less certainty of what they'll do in the NFL -- and do that at a much cheaper price, typically.

Winston, meanwhile, wants to get a deal, "sooner rather than later."

So Winston wants his price. He wants some longer-term certainty. And he'd like that get it done before the draft.

He might get one of those, maybe two. I doubt he gets all three.

If Cordarrell Patterson was on the roster, no one would care how high he was picked.

We would just be happy to have him. :-)

Look at how much Atlanta paid for Julio Jones. Taking Patterson at 12 in comparison is a bargain.

"this team def in win now mode"

No shyt sherlock. Lots of NFL teams sitting around, meh let's just try to win some other time. Not really feeling it at the moment.

10 yard penalty for using the term "def".
Just punt the ball already, try to win some other time.

PG13,

I admire your enthusiasm. That statement was in response to someone who said we were NOT in win now mode.

That is true, YG, Ireland having no major needs, except for OT.

Also, when examining Ireland's offseason work, I believe its far more probable that Ireland would move up in this year's draft, rather than down. Its's doubtful he moves higher than #5, because after all, we're not talking trying to move up to take a franchise qb.

If Ireland moves up to #5, Ezekial Ansah looks like the pick It will take getting up to #3 to get Eric Fisher, because it doesn't look like he slides past Philly, who urgently need LT help.

If none of these things occur, I expect to stand pat and I hate to say this, but we could still go in 3-4-5 different directions regarding our 12th pick.

My point is that there is no "win mode"! Everyone wants to and is trying to WIN NOW. When else is there?

N.F.L.

5 yard penalty. Replay down.

There are many, many players who don't want to go to the playoffs. They already make plenty. They don't want the extra work and extra risk to injury. Sad, but true.

Yeah thats why we have the CAP space that we do now.. dee dah dee
Posted by: mattybfromnc | April 09, 2013 at 01:48 PM

Cap space is NOT the objective of the game. W's are and Ireland sucks at W's. 4 consecutive losing seasons and counting. Any idiot can get cap space by dumping good players.

Hard to trust Ireland with Playmakers. If he drafted Miller last year was because that one fell to the 4th Rd. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean Ireland does not know how to do it. We'll see real soon.

Get Sense needs Sense.

We dumped a bunch of players who brought the team their longest losing season streak in history.

God are you awfully dumb.

Thing I like most about Ezekiel Ansah is that he doesn't neccessarily have to get to qb to be effective. He had 9 passes broken up and 1 pick last season.

Some of those batted passes turns to picks for our defense. He has the wingspan of a condor. So he doesn't have to necessarily get sacks and pressures to be effective in pass rush.

Judging by the new Ireland...I think Philbin and Sherman KNOCKED some sense into him. Like there is a time for the bargain basement and a time to GO SHOPPING!

Ezekiel Ansah's 9 passes broken up and 1 pick are as many as Sean Smith had playing corner most seasons he was in Miami. This guy plays DE. LOL....

Get Sense is either a TRoll, or an extremely dumb and SENSELESS individual LOL.

At 6'5 274, Ansah's also faster than the supposed top TE seam threats in this draft. Ansah recorded a 4.63 40. Eiffert, 4.68, this makes Ansah faster than every TE in this draft.

Get Sense wonders why a team with 4 consecutive losing seasons would discharge some of their players LOL.

Dumber than dumb.

Get Sense...are you SURE your brain is not made of fertilizer???

By dropping 3 players...Patterson, Carpenter and Denney fins can add about $8.1M in addl cap space and sign at least 1if not 2 addl FA and draft A kicker with 1 of the 7th Rd picks.
This draft could get real interesting.GM has set up the best draft in along time and a lot of people know this. Trade up, trade back, load up. Say so long to Pats along with a real coaching staff, look out.

We won't see Get Sense for a little while now that he has been proven to be a total idiot. But for sure he will be around in his other name.

God he thinks people are stupid.

jake long is not a good fit for zone blocking scheme thats why miami let him walk. but miami will get a high compolsury pick in 2014 for him.

PG13 should be G, that is how freaking naive that kid is.

Tampa Fin,

At this point, exactly what fa do you suggest are worth clearing 8 million in cap space for? Exactly, nobody at all!

There's nobody else out there but acorns. Please don't tempt Ireland back into old ways. LOL...

DS,
Sorry but not with the signing of Wallace, Keller, Ellerbe and Wheeler.
Will not happen, even with the loss of Long, Fasano, Smith, Bush, others to FA.

Got Sense, you exposed the Get Sense Troll.

I can't see us trading up for Lane Johnson. We already have an LJ on the team; we call him Will Yeatman.

We dumped a bunch of players who brought the team their longest losing season streak in history. All Irescum busts!

YG,
KC has a LT worth some of that with a pick or if they release him.
Otherwise, two LTs still available worth something and some fill, maybe a safety.
All short term but can play now.

Applauding cap space shows how very desperate Dolphin fans are. Hilarious applauding cap space.

Its arguable Wallace will nullify this, but Long is likely pro bowler on fan recognition again. Been this way the last 2-3yrs.

Its arguable Brent Grimes will have a better season than Sean smith. My money's on a healthy Brent Grimes.

Keller's more o a pass receiving threat than Fasano. See where Im going with this?

Yup, we may end up with zero compensatory, which would actually be a welcomed thing.

Get Sense,
Tell me what you think Fins should do.

Albert isn't a fa, he's under the franchise tag. Even in a trade we we only need clear roughly 2 million, not 8 million to sign him.

Get Sense, take a pill and have a nice sleep for a few years. You are clutching at straw. Try infiltrating a new blog where people are not as dumb as you are.

YG,
Understand, but we need the cap to sign and my comment was actually that we have the cap, may not be shown, and we definitely have a an addl 2-3 to make it happen.
Would prefer this to a trade up.

Of course I meant where people are dumber than you, if that is even remotely possible. If I were you I'd stick to your friends that live in goldfish bowls and aquariums.

Broder! Reading about him and watching him, Ansah looks like a Phenom to me. Imagine a guy that size running the 100 METERS in 10.9. Besides he's highly intelligent, educated as his Parents are and appeared not at all out of place in his first full year of Organized American Football. Great run stopper. You get him for Us, YG, we'll teach him to Passrush. I'm absolutely sure he'll learn it in a flash

Posted by: Tampa Fin Fan | April 09, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Albert's cap and franchise number is 9.9 million. In June, Dansby/Burnett numbers comes of the books adding 10 million in cap space. Presently we sit at 8 million.

Total by June, 18 million. Then subtract 10 million(rookies, etc..etc..) and we're back to 8 million to actually freely spend.

So if Albert costs 9.9(10)million, we only need 2 million in cleared space to fit him in in 2013. Now 2014 is a an entirely different beast. Im sure Ireland has plans set for that season too.

But lets now get to far ahead of ourselves in anticipating what it will take to sign Albert longterm. That's something for an entirely different day.

oscar have you been laid in the last two years? damn you need it bad, might as well pay for a fix or two.

Someone forgot to Louisville women that when the men won lastnight that championship didn't cover them too. Looks like UConn came out to play, but the Louisville women were up to late partying with the men.

YG,
Understand the addl cap space coming in June.
Would like to carry about $10M based on the current contracts.
Would be nice.

UConn 93 Louisville 60. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been good reading and communicating.
Time to crash.
0530 comes early.
Thanks.

YOU ARE SOOOOO DUMB! LMFAO!!

I guarantee if a cb is drafted 1st-2nd rd Marshall or Patterson are as good as cut.

I have no sexual desire anymore, tata. I am Celibate.

We can get Armstead or Kyle Long for the pick we would have to give up to get to a secure position to draft Johnson, and we could have had Cooper or a top DB,DE or WR to go with him. Trading up to get a project LT and missing out on that kind of talent is ludacris. Ireland is blowing smoke.
A trade down is the only prophesy I can foresee unless a real gem falls in the first round that is unexpected.

If Patterson getting smoked everyday come July, he gots to go.
He's not worth all the millions.

Fins of Fury,

Seems the fins have cooled somewhat on Lane Johnson. If trading up its all the way to #3 for Fisher, or #5 for Ansah. Other than that, its a cheap trade up to #10 should Milliner fall this far.

After this, I see no real value of trading back, having more picks doesn't guarantee getting better players. Before trading back, I would consider taking Warmack at #12.

We took a center at #13(Pouncey) so why not take a guy clearly the best at his position at #12? Warmack is that player at OG.

For the first time in what seems nearly forever, we look solid at nearly every team position. This is due to Ireland's solid fa work.

He created a draft environment for himself to where he's nearly free to go and do whatever he wants. Especially with the 1st pick involved.

Whatever his 1st pick is, it will put that unit of our team over the top.

I was not implying that we should not stay at #12 and take the BPA,that was actually part of my post. And Milliner was one of the gems to which I was referring.
Day two and even into day three; I feel there are good starters to be found. To give up one or two of these for a project LT makes no sense. I think if the situation prevails, Ireland will more likely trade down.

What are some of the fabulous, cherished foods of Jacksonville, Florida? Are they famous for their boiled egg dishes or luncheon meats?

I would like to visit Jacksonville, Florida someday and observe food.

Take the sure thing in a veteran. Otherwise Tanny's going down.

Miami would be better kicking Jonathan martin to the left side and going after the Alabama RT or FSU tacklethat is huge and a people mover and would be available to them in the draft.
