Where Dolphins needs, wants and must haves stand

First a quick refresher course on material covered over the years on this blog: The Dolphins personnel department, at least this group that has been mostly together since 2008, rates their offseason priorities in three general categories ...

Needs.

Wants.

Must haves.

Must haves are players that play positions that are an absolute necessity to field a team in the fall. Must haves have the ultimate priority. If the Dolphins don't fill their must have list, they are doomed. And that obviously means the world is doomed. So not wanting to doom life on the planet, the Dolphins always address their must haves.

By the way, when the team fails to properly address must-haves, it goes to training camp and ends up signing stopgap veterans such as Marc Colombo in 2011. Who wants that?

Needs are players that play positions that are necessary to upgrade the team but don't meet the urgency of a must have. A need, for example, comes at a position where a player already at that position is lacking and the team wants to replace. But if you don't upgrade the spot, at least the team has a body to play the position at some tolerable level, even if it requires holding your breath and pinching your nose.

Wants are the least urgent of the categories. These are players that play positions that the personnel department would love to address, but often cannot. The last three years or so, the Dolphins wanted to upgrade the tight end position. But because starter Anthony Fasano was a C-plus to B-minus player at the spot, the team put it off and put it off. The team had a want at tight end. But, well, the franchise didn't fall apart because tight end wasn't properly upgraded.

Got it? Good, refresher over. Now let's skip to today.

The Dolphins are about one week past their breakneck run through free agency and just over two weeks from the draft. And so it is time to assess where the Dolphins stand going to that draft. It is time to assess what the team's wants, needs and must haves are today.

This, of course, is my opinion. It does not reflect what the team is thinking because I have not asked team personnel. (Frankly, this is a bad time to talk to those guys because they are locked in rooms for long hours everyday in draft meetings. Nobody has time for wittle 'ol me :-(

Here we go:

Must haves: Offensive tackle qualifies because the Dolphins lost Jake Long to the St. Louis Rams and didn't really replace him. The club either needs a left tackle so that Jonathan Martin can go back to right tackle, or it needs to add a right tackle to start while leaving Martin stays at the left tackle spot where he finished last season. Either way tackle is a must have ... Cornerback is a must have in my humble. The Dolphins might not agree based on how much love GM Jeff Ireland showed Dimitri Patterson weeks ago while at the NFL annual meeting. Me? I'm not sold on Patterson as a solid starter and I cannot be completely sold that Brent Grimes will be back to his old Pro Bowl self by the start of the season. Richard Marshall is also back from back surgery, but again, the next season he plays without being injured for the Dolphins will be the first. Yes, the Dolphins have bodies at the position but all of them, ALL OF THEM, come with question marks.

The must-haves this year are particularly important to address because they both involve the passing game. The tackle must protect quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The cornerback must defend the pass. And the NFL, by the way, is a passing league.

Needs: Defensive end has to fal here because Cameron Wake cannot do it all by himself. Yes, the Dolphins have high hopes for Josh Kaddu as a rush specialist (which I reported last month). Yes, Olivier Vernon has promise. Yes, the club has a starter opposite Wake in Jared Odrick. But none of the players I just mentioned is proven as a very good 4-3 NFL defensive end ... Tight end makes this list because while the Dolphins added Dustin Keller, that was a one-year rental. Charles Clay isn't the answer and neither is Michael Egnew. Meanwhile, Fasano is gone. So you need to draft somebody for the future.

Wants: The club wants to add a defensive tackle. Yes, another one. Remember that Paul Soliai and Randy Starks will be in the final year of their deals in 2013. Also, Vaughn Martin is only signed for two years ... The club wants to add a safety. Yes, Reshad Jones is a keeper. But Chris Clemons is on a one-year deal that shows the team likes him, but doesn't love him. While Clemons can be the starter this year, Miami wants to upgrade the spot for long-term ... Kicker qualifies here. Dan Carpenter had a poor 2012 and finisihed the season on injured reserve so the club cannot go into 2013 without bringing in someone -- perhaps a priority free agent -- to at least compete ... A running back would be nice, too. Yes, Lamar Miller will be the guy and Daniel Thomas is expected to back him up. But Thomas is often injured and you probably need three guys. Are  Marcus Thigpen or Jonas Gray that guy? I don't know. I'd rather bring another body in there just in case.

Whatever, cuz

First rd is going to be Oline, or best avail (TE, CB, DE) really think its Eifert then CB. Cyprien is better than Vaccaro. WR is not a concern and will be addressed in the lower draft picks although Swope would be a good WR to pick up. Phins might trade up with Oakland or Cleveland to get LT or CB (Jockel, Fischer, Johnson or Millner)

Tackle is not a must have...I believe the powers that believe Martin can fill in for Jake just fine...that is not to say they don't need another offensive lineman. But not with the first pick. Corner is most pressing position in a pass happy league. Trade up to Milliner or Get Rhoades at #12. Tight end would be my second round pick andDE my next 2nd rounded. TE 3rd, OT next 3rd. After that pick up a good RB in 4th.

lots of people here keep saying Patterson. I'm from Tenn. and am a big fan of him, he will be a beast with someone but I hope not with Miami. We signed many WR's and can draft one later or pick up a TE later. Effiert is a big reach at 12 so get off it guys. As bad as I hate it, LT or RT is our biggest need and Ireland said he will be drafting Horizontally which is for drafting needs. 12 will and should be used for a off. tackle. replace elite with elite. Long is gone so we have to get one in the first, Martin was drafted in the sec. and is still struggling, so much for the theories I keep reading about drafting one later.

YGs Now on his 8th hour of non-stop posting, Get some energy drinks YG, You got another 25 hours to go to best Odindouches 33 hours.
Good luck to you sir on your record.(You can do it.)

Dashi, agreed that Vernon's measurables are nice but saying that he would be a first round pick on that alone is a stretch. First round picks should have measurables and past performance. I mean Margus Hunt did more in college than Vernon and blows his measurables out fo the water and nobody wants to give him a first round grade.

pancake,
you need to look at the daft boards and see that Quality OT's are in the first rd were as there are many, if not most, of the Quality CB's in the sec. rd. the ONLY first rd CB is Millner and he will be gone long be fore we pick. C' on man.

In response to Adam H. Beasley post where he quoted Winston saying that the Dolphins are waiting until after the Draft to make a decision on OT.. Now, really?

in regards to Hunt I read he was invited to the 1st day of the draft... I wouldn't be surprised if Hunt goes late to someone like the packers or niners... He could end up being tried out as a 3-4 DE.

CONTINUE TO BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT!!! And-we may already have some answers to our needs. Phins are the second youngest team in the league. A lot of turn over and transition the past 2 years. Scheme changes to 4-3 and zone. A bunch of young players added over that time with some talent who were playing on a dysfunctional team. That dysfunction is shrinking. I have some expectation the coaching staff has a better grip on how they see our current group in the schemes they are trying to develop. That leaves a lot of unanswered questions but opens the door for our lot of draft picks to help set up the future foundation of this team.

I have always believed the key is to start with a strong OL. It is hard, however, to see the top 3 (or 4) OT drop to us @ 12, but I have a harder time thinking about trading up and losing additional picks. We do need to keep Tanney on his feet. This is a draft of unspectacular but MANY solid players, so we have a chance to reap a lot of success across all of our needs.

Would love one of the OT's but this is not necessarily the only way to go. With a vertical assessment, and the number of picks we have, we can fill our TE, DE, OT CB needs, and still play with RB, DL, S and LB. We can also dibble with WR but can still pay with Bess and see how our young WR's perform. Another year and more stable coaching--we may be closer than is thought...

We need a excellent tackle to protect Tannehill. not some one competent. yeesh!

Mock drafts are like earthquake predictions, wildly inaccurate. Here are the variables someone is accounting for when they do a 7-rd mock draft: 31 other teams choosing between a few hundred players, GM's making same day trades/moves among the usual surprises no one anticipates.

In a word, mock drafts are SO UNNECESSARY (and even a bit unwanted). I guess people have some internal need to be dismissed at large.

On The Politics Talk

Only In This Country Is Politics So Black And White. You Are Either Republican Or Democrat. Conservative Or Liberal. Rich Or Middle Class.

In Almost Every Other Country, You Have At Least 3-4 Major Political Parties. Is That A Good Thing? Don't Know. But It Does Seem Like We Live In A Capitalist Communism. A Free Economy Controlled By The 1%.

Is There Something Better? Probably. But The System Won't Allow For Change. Until They Find Another Country Succeeding With A Different Form Of Gov't.

Look At Communism. It Got A Bad Rap All These Years Because Of Dictators And Warlords, Not A Group. But China Is Making It Work. They Are Actually Following The True Definition. A Gov't Where Everyone Is Given An Equal Opportunity To Succeed. A Gov't Where Everyone Gets All Basic Needs For Free. A Communist Capitalism.

Take Imperial Rule For Instance. Some Kingdoms have Been Bad. Some Kingdoms Have Been Good.

It Has Been A Real Long While Since A New Form Of Gov't Has Been Created. I Believe The Next Country To Develop A New Improved Form Of Gov't Will Be The Next Superpower for The Next 100-300 Years.

The Constitution Was Meant To Grow With The Times. And Not Allow The Rich To Control The Interest Of The Country. We The People Are No Longer In Charge. The Check And Balance System, No Longer Exist. All 3 Branches Work In Cahoots To Control The Masses.

Buster, you are right, we just have to wait and see now. I personally do not believe we need to pick an OL with our first pick. I will be just as happy with Brennan, Pugh or Long in the second round. I will support the Fins no matter what but I will be disappointed in an OL pick at 12

as I have been saying, the draft gets a whole lot easier if either Clabo, winston, or Albert is signed; then go with a DE Ansah?), Poyer at CB, Eric Reid at S , and would love Giovanni Bernard at RB. Maybe in later rounds a speed WR ( Marquis Goodwin- Texas)

If I was drafting late in the first and looking to beef up my defense, I'd definitely take on Hunt. however using him as a 3-4 DE would be a huge waste in my opinion. He's got the tools to be a very good 4-3 DE

biggest needs by far are corner and oline

Dashi....hate to burst the bubble..but most of the guys who wrote the Costitution were ALREADY rich...

...now show me a rich guy who puts the common good above his money..and I'll show you an ex - rich guy....

as for a better system....well first make the peeps perfect and loving....then you don't need a system....

and good luck with that small moralistic task..

...yet.. I digress....I think LT is the priority....no way Ireland leaves this draft without one of high quality...

..and his history in the league speaks to that end..

he had Flozell Adams in Dallas, and when Flo left...so did a large portion of the Cowboys effectiveness on Offense.. then here in Miami....while Jake was strong and effective, the left side of the O-line was the strength...

...the complete O-line package has been elusive..for various factors which have been explored endlessly on this blog space...

...I think he sees it coming together this year...but without the LT to barricade Tanny's blind spot...we are would be flirting with disaster....

Bobbyd12....I'm hearin ya dude.....

YHF@12:00, I complained several time during the season about the same thing. Responses were the D-line was the strength of the D....yadda, yadda.
The first thing coaches teach the D-line is, beat your man and get into the backfield. Can't get to the QB, get your hands up. Those instructions start at the peewee level. It's basic football. Time after time we didn't get penetration. Why?

Mark,

Margus Played In Weak Conference.

How Many Guys Get Drafted In The First Over A Good Combine Alone. Look At T.Austin Or Ansah. Nobody Had Those Guys As First Rounder Til The Combine.

OV, Could've Probably Had 10+ Sacks Last Year In College. He Did Get 3.5 In A Part Time Role In The NFL.

Who In This Draft Is As Similar To C.Wake?

When You Look At OV, He Is Basically A Cam Wake Clone.

cocoajoe, our Dline is good but not at rushing the passer ... we have pluggers that are the remnant of a 3-4 defense where stopping the run was what the line was supposed to do. Another reason why I think Sheldon Richardson would be a good pick. Penetration up the middle and strong against the run.

dashi will marlins lose 110 games

I know bloggers like saying Vernon is a Cam Wake clone but he is not. The only similarity is their first step explosion. However, Wake has tremendous balance and agility where he can teeter over the OLineman at what seems like a 45 degree angle. Vernon can't do this. He doesn't have the same moves and too often relies on the bull rush.

If there is going to be someone that is similar to Cam Wake, I would look at some of the OLB/DE tweeners - Trevardo Williams of UCOnn, his teammate Sio Moore, Jamie Collins of Southern Miss. These guys are a lot more like Wake than Vernon is.

that mock c is the worst draft ive ever seen

Buster,

I Wouldn't Say Most Those Guys WERE Rich. Did They Get Rich After The Revolution? Yes. But Before Then? Doubt It. The English had All The Money. The Rich Didn't Want A Revolution. They Still Had Ties To The King.

Agreed. It Is A Little Asinine To Talk About Politics. Most People Are To Enslaved In Their Ways To Be Enlightened. The Others Just Don't Care. The Reason Politicians And The Koch Bros. Can Do Whatever They Want.

OK, back To Football For Dashi!!

People Like When Dashi Only Talks About The Simple Things. Politics And Religion Are To Complex For The Simple Mind. We Live In A Society Where Thinking and Expressing Personal Opinions Of Things That Matter In Life Life Are Taboo.

Notice It Has Been Decades, Centuries, Even Millennia, Since Prophets and Luminaries Walked The Earth. People Are No Longer Allowed To Develop The True Potential Of Their Mind. Only A Select Few Are Allowed To Think Freely.

LOve this but would just switch The 2nd Jonathan Franklin RB UCLA pick for a CB. I don't see RB a Hugh need. More of a want

Dusty,

I Don't Even Want To Think About It. I Doubt It.

The 1 Good Thing I See With The Marlins. Pitching. I Think Everyone Expected The Hitting To Be Better Than The Pitching. Not The Case. If The Marlins Actually Hit Better They Might Win A Couple Games. They Haven't Gotten Blown Out 15-1. They've Been Shutout Though. Which Is Worst In My Book.

I Can Deal With A Team Only Giving Up 3-4 Runs A Game. It Just Sucks When They Go Thru The Lineup 1-2 Times And Nobody Gets A Hit. These Guys Aren't Power Hitters. But They Also Aren't Contact Hitters. That Is The Biggest Disappointment To Dashi. We Can't Hit A Beach Ball!! Never mind A Baseball.

110 Losses Is A Lot.

90+ Seems Like A Real Possibility Though.

Hopefully The Bats Wake Up.

good point I just don't think they should pass on Franklin I see him as the best RB in the class with Bernard just a bit ahead of Lacey.

Mark,

OV
6'3" 260

Wake
6'3" 260

They Both Have A Non Stop Motor.

They Both Have Mohawks.

And Who Is OV's Mentor?

OV is Only 22. Most Pass Rushers Aren't Even In The NFL At That Age.

What Has Wake Said About His Protege? The Kid Is Learning and I am Teaching Him.

Out Of Anything, OV Might Be Better Than Wake When It Is All Said And Done. How Many Sacks Did Wake Have At 21 In The NFL?

ill go with 105 losses, feel bad for stanton

MARK:

I UNDERSTAND YOUR ARGUMENT ON PAGE 3.

HOWEVER THE DRAFT IS A CRAP SHOOT FOR THE MOST PART.

JUST BECAUSE A PLAYER PERFORMED WELL IN NCAA DOESN't HAS TO TRANSLATE INTO THE NFL.

I AGREE WITH YOU THAT YOU WANT SOMEONE WHO HAS MORE PRODUCTION WITH A TOP 15 PICK BUT THAT's NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.

RYAN T-HILL PLAYED WHAT 4 MORE GAMES THAN PATTERSON.

PATTERSON WENT UP AGAINST THE NCAA ELITE AND EMERGE AS A TOP THREE WR.

AND THAT's ONLY PLAYING ONE YEAR OF FOOTBALL.

AND YES I LOOK AT THE WHOLE BODY OF WORK.

PATTERSON WOULD UPGRADE.

OUR WR CORE.

PUNT RETURN AND KICK OFF RETURN.

HE COULD EFFECTIVLY CHANGE FIELD POSITION WITH ONE TOUCH OF THE BALL.

THAT's SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP BOTH OUR OFFENSE AND DEFENSE.

YES I WILL TAKE HIM OVER ANY PLAYER YOU NAME IN THIS DRAFT.

Mark,

The Age.

This Is The One Thing Dashi Keeps Repeating. That Seems To Be Overlooked.

You Are Talking Like A 22 Year Old DE is A Complete Product.

A Diamond Isn't A Diamond Until It Is Cut And Polished.

Now Next Year If OV Is Not Producing Double Digit Sacks. Then We Have A Problem.

And He Will Still Be Younger Than Mingo, D.Jordan, And Ansah Right Now. All Over 23 Years Old. Are They Going To Come In As Rookies And Guarantee 10+ Sacks Of Bat.

By The Time OV Is 23 He Will Have 2 NFL Seasons Under His Belt.

Off Bat

THEY MAY BE ABLE TO PULL SOMETHING OUT OF WRS RISHARD MATTHEWS AND BRANDON GIBSON IN THE RED ZONES. BIG BODY WIDE RECEIVERS. EIFERT ONE ON ONE LINED UP ON THE OUTSIDE LIKE A WIDE RECEIVER. HIS ATHLETICISM WILL SHOW UP OUT THERE. FASANO DID IT LAST SEASON AND EIFERT IS MORE ATHLETIC THAN FASANO WAS.

DASHI:

I AGREE WITH 4:18 POST.

Dashi I agree they shouldn't draft a DE 1st rd. but u'd still want to draft another DE for the future... Wake is going to be 32 soon. He's in great shape yes but how many more years are we going to keep him? 3-4 maybe? There's always injuries to consider as well.

DASHI:

IS RIGHT ABOUT OV.

WHY GET DE THAT's OLDER AND HAVEN't HAD A TASTE OF THE NFL.

DASHI IS ON FIRE TODAY.

daShebo wants Manti even with his imaginary girl/guy friend.

ON ANOTHER NOTE..

I'm ON MY WAY DOWN TO MIAMI.

WHAT's THE WEATHER LIKE FOR THE NEXT WEEK?

I 'm DRIVING DOWN FROM NEW JERSEY.

SO MOVE BI+CH GET OUT DA WAY.

I WAS HOPING TO GET A NEW JERSEY(NO PUN) WHILE I WAS DOWN THERE.

JUST SHOW YOUR FELLOW DOLPHIN BROTHER SOME LOVE.

P.S.

CAN YOU GUYS GIVE ME SOME SPOTS I CAN CHILL WITH THE MRS.

WE're HAVING OUR FIRST CHILD SO NO POLE DANCER SPOTS.

POTUS,

Agreed. We Still Need To Draft A DE. Even Though All My Favorite College DE's Are Still In College. Clowney and Chickillo.

I Would Do The Same Thing As Last year. Draft A 21 yr Old DE in The Mid Round With All The Physical Tools That Needs Developing. Same Thing With The TE.

Dashi's Mock

1-BPA (OT, S, OG)
2- O-line Or S, Whichever one We Didn't Pick In The First
2-See Above
3-DE
3-TE
4-LB
5-RB(Lattimore Or M.James From The U, Perfect Compliment For L.Miller)
5-O-line
6-K
7-WR
7-CB
7-S

Finish Fixing The O-Line and Get A Better Safety To Team Up With R.Jones. That Has To Be The Most Important Priority Going Into The Draft. We Already Have More CB's Than Last Year. And Better CB's Than Last Year.

Mark@4:43, lotta truth in what you say but there' s still no excuse for not getting their hands up. Just makes me crazy on Sunday afternoons.

Justin Definitely get to the Lincoln Road Mall if you are near South Beach...lots of terrif restaurants....outdoor cafes....lots going on...only few blocks from the ocean....very relaxing...and the peeps are always out in force around lunch time or dinner....

JC,

It Already Feels Like Summer Down Here.

,,,,if you are in downtown Miami...try City Hall..a classy eatery...around 23rd St and Biscayne...

Dashi,

No CB until the 7th rd. Seriously??

Kiper on ESPN saying Dolphins should take Fluker at 12. Kind of high for a RT I would think.

.......if you are on the South side of the Miami river , try Rosinellas on sw 10th and Miami ave....(there is also a Rosinellas @ Lincoln Road Mall)....really tasty italian food at reasonable neighborhood prices...

Fluker would be a horrible pick imo

....Justin...if you like seafood with marina atmosphere....south beach...Alton Road on the south end....right side of the strret ..Monty's by the Bay.....raw bar....marina and a pool..the locals are in the bikinis and the briefs....others in casual dress....good for lunch but jumps at nite...

Seems like Gone is the only one who sees our wr core for what it really is. No one on this wr core scares any one but Wallace. In today's NFL most teams need 2 legit wrs who can get vertical and do some thing with the ball in hand. Only one wr on this team runs under 4.5. Not good.

Hartline ..Gibson and Bess are possession wrs who lack not only explosion but the physicality to consistently separate from coverage. Those expecting Mike Wallace to uncover the entire wr core are football stupid.

You need another target that can be an explosive player in the passing gm. Mike Wallace can't be a lone wolf and needs legitimate help from another target with speed. Also...what happens if he is injured? Hartline is barely a good 2 better yet a legit 1. Draft Patterson or Eifert at 12.

...also the SW Miami ave location is a hot spot from twilight until Midnite and more....Tobacco Road at the north end is supposedly a landmark..(It's a dive compared to the rest of the street).....

Trade Starks And Bess For Brandon Albert To Kansas City , Left Tackle Problem Solved , The Chiefs Draft The Offensive Tackle They Want With The First Pick And Fill The Hole They Have In The Middle With The Departure Of Glenn Dorsey To The 49ers, Both Teams Walk Out Happy , Is This Doable Or Not?
